Born in 1982, Runa Fjord is a fjord horse mare and agent of chaos. Her life is a patchwork of fascinating events. She has been in the furry fandom for over 25 years, with a decade of that time leading and shaping a major furry convention. She is a queer trans woman, fursuiter, veteran, SCUBA dive mistress, lifelong board game and tabletop RPG enthusiast, and now author.

Dissolution (2024) is Runa’s first real work of fiction. She draws upon her own journey, and takes inspiration from the tales of others to explore new worlds through the eyes of her characters. Runa always seeks to see below the surface, to understand those around her, and to see beyond the simple facade that surrounds us. Be wary of standing between the mare and her current hyperfixation.

You might like this book if you:
-Are looking for a unique spin on the superhero genre
-Want more trans/queer representation in said superhero genre
-Love that sexy villain aesthetic
-Enjoy fast-paced thrill rides
-Like powdered sugar

Dissolution is a new entry in the ever-developing Korps Universe, which explores a world in which the titular organization of "villains" fights against a world run by "heroes". Of course, the villains in this case are usually the progressive, queer good guys, and the heroes are the corrupt, bigoted baddies. This book follows that same formula, but with enough thrilling action to keep you on your toes the whole way.

Many of the Korps books I've read so far have been slow to medium paced, allowing time for touching explorations of trans identity in an oppressive superpowered world. Dissolution, meanwhile, is undoubtedly fast-paced, but still manages to pack in those explorations. Not to mention the author does a great job of setup and payoff, with so many small mentions of things in the beginning and middle coming back to rock the plot later down the line.

Any fan of the other Korps Universe novels, or readers who are looking for a unique spin on the superhero genre, would do well to pick this book up. Especially if they enjoy fast-paced, action packed thrill rides.

My second read in the Korps universe, and this one was a nice change from the first, as it dealt with established characters within the Korps, and really gave a strong look at how everything functions.

The book continues with the aggressively queer and trans themes, which is a much needed sense of escapism right now. Yes, there is conflict, bigotry, and hatred coming from the "heroes", but knowing that someone is there fighting for trans rights is a huge tonic.

About the characters, Runa crafts some really nice ones here, and I liked how distinct the two primary PoV characters were, and the others who occasionally popped up with a chapter or two of their own. They had unique voices and really fleshed out their character and brought new insights to the world.

Highly recommended!

(Minor spoilers so better safe than sorry)

Another Korps novel read and once again, it didn't fail to entertain and impress.

Once again, the main characters were wonderful to read. Starshade's sass and humor mixed well with her determination and drive. It was so fun to see everyone underestimate her, only for her to prove them wrong by doing something they didn't expect, and it shows the depth of her character. My favorite thing about her, though, is how devoted she is to the Korps. You can tell why she chose to stick by them and it's heartwarming. Slate (or I guess Not-Slate) is also a wonderful character in his own right. They go through the entire story locked in an internal battle about whether they want to be a Hero and whether it's even right to be a Hero. I loved seeing a member of the main hero organization realize that what they were doing wasn't right and join the side they realized in his heart were the true heroes. Also, their transformation and unlocking their true self was just fuckin cool.

I thought the overall plot of this story was well thought out, and the twists and turns were navigated in a way that made sense while also still adding some spice and surprise to what I was reading. I also thoroughly enjoyed the different nods to other people's Korps characters. I think it was really sweet and I love that the Korps community is so close that they can connect their stories together like that.

My one criticism is I wish there had been more build-up when it came to the antagonists of the story. It just seemed like people like Manifest Destiny, Ethicoil, and Fatal Thorns were thrust into the big villain role at certain parts of the story and then defeated. I felt it took away from their defeats a bit because while I was happy to see their asses get kicked, I felt like it would've been even more satisfying if I had been hating on these characters for longer and knew more about who they were as people and their actions.

Overall though, this was a fantastic read through and through, and I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves queer supervillain stories or just likes seeing assholes who think they're the good guys get beaten by people they underestimate.

I usually really struggle to read books that contain a lot of fast paced action sequences but I absolutely did not have this difficulty when I read Dissolution. Runa knows how to handle suspense and action in equal measure and that really shines in Dissolution.

The cast of characters in this are wonderful, too. There's a huge breadth and diversity to them that really is impressive in its own right. Celia, for example, has to be my personal favorite. She's forthright about what she believes and its all matched perfectly with the absolute presence she has in some scenes. You can just feel how, in an alternate story written by a less sympathetic protagonist, she'd be easy to paint as an irredeemable monster, and yet... Dissolution shows you her through two very different sets of eyes and she's richer as a character for it.

And that doesn't stop at Celia, either. Starshade and Slate are equally complex characters whose perspectives I ate up throughout the story.

One last thing I would say about this book is that it doesn't *feel* like a novel as long as it is, but in a good way. You'll want more after finishing it.
