NESTLED DEEP WITHIN THE WELSH COUNTRYSIDE IS A COTTAGE

The Spirits Three B&B, it's called.

A bed and breakfast for weary travellers of all sorts.
A sanctuary for spirits, shapeshifters, and mortals alike.
A gathering place for story, song, and sword fighting.

Pull up a seat and listen—as long as it's not the crimson armchair in the corner, because you will soon find the frail old woman who has claimed it is, in fact, an ancient dragon capable of charring you to ashes.

She probably won't.
But best not risk it.

Book Review: The Spirits Three: A Cozy Urban Fantasy Novella by K.V. Wilson

K.V. Wilson’s The Spirits Three is a delightful novella that seamlessly blends the whimsical charm of cozy fantasy with the intrigue of urban magic. Set in the heart of the Welsh countryside, this story introduces readers to a bed and breakfast like no other—a haven where spirits, shapeshifters, mortals, and mythological beings coexist in harmony (mostly).

The Spirits Three B&B is more than just a place to rest; it’s a gathering spot for storytelling, sword fighting, and mysterious encounters. The setting itself is enchanting, brimming with atmosphere and quirky details that make it feel alive. Whether it’s the warm glow of the hearth or the curious crimson armchair claimed by an ancient dragon in disguise, Wilson’s vivid descriptions transport readers directly into this magical world.

The novella’s strength lies in its character-driven narrative. Each guest, be they mortal or mythical, brings their own stories, secrets, and personalities to the B&B, creating a tapestry of interactions that range from heartwarming to humorous. The elderly dragon disguised as a frail old woman is a particularly standout character, embodying the blend of danger and wit that makes the book so captivating.

Wilson’s writing is both cozy and sharp, weaving lighthearted humor with subtle tension. The novella’s tone is perfect for fans of cozy fantasy, yet it hints at deeper lore and conflicts that will likely unfold in the Spirits' War Trilogy.

The Spirits Three is a quick, engaging read that will leave you eager to learn more about the world and its inhabitants. It’s perfect for anyone who enjoys a mix of magic, mystery, and cozy settings with a touch of danger. Whether you’re a fan of urban fantasy or looking for a unique and enchanting escape, this novella is a fantastic choice.

Cosy indeed! I especially loved the "story within a story", the tale of the Flame Child.

This is the first cozy urban fantasy I’ve read, but I feel like that genre fits it perfectly! I’ve read Wilson’s Spiritbourne trilogy and, for me, reading this felt like catching up with old friends. I could picture myself sitting around Mac Tíre and Quinn’s inn, listening as the spirits and shapeshifters recounted stories of past lives, family, and journeys they’ve made.

While I enjoyed all the stories, three are my favorite. “Flint and Flockhart” recounts the tale of how, in a past incarnation, Mac Tíre and Nwyfre help a band of persecuted dragons find a safe place to call their own. I feel like it has all the things that make me love a story: action, danger, and humor. The next, “Flame-Child” is told by Xunnu, chieftain of the five tribe of shapeshifters who live in Western Canada. I love how it weaves danger and action in a coming of age story about Xunnu’s grandfather. My final favorite was “Flight of Fancy.” It shows some of the dynamics of the dragon hierarchy and the curmudgeonly Elspeth gives us a surprise.

This book is a witty, imaginative adventure that blends humor with enchantment. The story transports readers to a quirky haven where the ordinary collides with the extraordinary, resulting in moments both heartwarming and hilarious. Characters brim with charm, and the setting itself feels like a character, cozy, unpredictable, and steeped in magic. A delightful, whimsical tale that feels equal parts comfort and chaos, you’ll want to linger long after the last page.
