Why is this so highly rated???? (Edit: I see now after posting this that it’s so highly rated because there’s only 4 reviews at the time of me posting this. That would explain things.)

Here’s a summary: we’re gonna print worksheets and pull them out whenever our kids are struggling emotionally so they can calmly point to and describe their feelings. Maybe they need to draw their feelings instead! Next we’ll write down the situation, including date and time of day and external factors like hunger, tiredness, etc, and what caused the emotional outburst in our trigger tracker for us to reflect on later (maybe during our weekly family meetings where we pointlessly talk about our feelings and expect the entire family to be jazzed about it). Then we’ll do a quick checklist for our day to make sure we took a few minutes to sit quietly together to be mindful of our bodies (again, they’re all going to be so willing and excited to do this, squirmy toddlers AND moody teens alike).
While we’re at it, let’s create a little chart that shows all of the expected behaviors and reward our kid with stickers and also let’s give this to their teachers because they clearly don’t have enough to do so let’s give them a stupid task like make sure my kid says thank you and doesn’t hit anyone and give them a sticker for all the things they did right that day.
Oh yeah AND let’s create a database, digital is best, of all of our resources we like to use that should be updated every few months. This can include a slew of books, a bunch of podcasts about whatever the heck, and also video clips. Make sure you do your research on each of these things so they can be extra beneficial for you. An organized digital database for when I need it answers on how to handle my kid when they feel like I’m being a robot (which is crazy, why would they ever think that when I have a WORKSHEET for managing their emotions).

I’m completely baffled that people liked this book. Are we kidding right now? This is garbage.

“Emotions are high and bedtime is approaching so we grab our toolkit and get out an ‘emotional identification worksheet’ to help them pinpoint how they’re feeling. Then we review the trigger tracker log to identify patterns and discuss strategies for how to handle this in the future. Finally, we run through a conflict resolution checklist, guiding your child through resolving a spat with their sibling.” (Abbreviated paragraph in the final chapter)

SERIOUSLY??? Does this person have kids????? Do they only have one?????

How many hours in a day does this author assume we all have??? Who is doing worksheets when their kid is screaming because they’re overstimulated or just straight up mad about a decision that was made?! Who is taking the time right after an emotional outburst to say “hmm let me find my journal and write about it real quick, I’ve got nothing else to do. Dear diary: I was mad because my kid has decided to pretend to be an actual slug today and I’m just trying to not be late for the appointment and I can’t get them to put on shoes but hey, now that Im already late and they’re still slugging out the door, lemme just quickly write the date, time, and reason for my trigger so the next time my kid is a slug I can react differently. That’s on me.” GOSH THE MORE IM THINKING ABOUT THIS BOOK THE ANGRIER IM GETTING. I was going to give it 2 stars but truly I wish I had dnf’d it.

I loved this book. It was very simple for me to follow along with each of the steps. Lots of examples specific to age groups, which was helpful for me having two kids five years apart in age.
Some of the key things that stood out for me are dealing with my frustration and anger, and how to cope with outbursts from my toddler. There are some really good strategies to help create emotional intelligence in my 12-year-old. I’ve started to see him, embrace more empathy, and using the breathing techniques that I learned in this book.
