In a world where the intricate dance of magic and technology once dismantled the previous era, the remnants of the old world linger in the form of Mechoids—cybernetic beasts that relentlessly hunt humans. Civilization, after years of rebuilding, stands on the precipice of a fragile existence. At the heart of this delicate balance is Avery, a twenty-year-old woman bound by the oppressive guardianship of Lord Theodore Sinclair. Fueled by a desire for freedom, Avery daringly escapes Sinclair's estate, only to unravel a destiny intertwined with magic. As she navigates a perilous journey, Avery discovers her latent powers as a mage, setting in motion a quest to liberate herself permanently from the shadows of her past.
Join the sassy and resourceful Avery as she embarks on a journey filled with magic, danger, and self-discovery. This book is the perfect adventure as we explore, along with our skilled heroine, a world where fantasy and science-fiction effortlessly combine. Danger lurks within ancient ruins and gilded halls, and a young woman’s quest for answers will lead her to unexpected alliances, terrifying and untamable monsters, and knowledge beyond her wildest dreams.
If you enjoy witty banter, endearing characters with depth and growth, found family, villains you’ll LOVE to hate, brooding (and handsome!) heroes, thrilling sword fights and feisty mages, this story has it all and more! Get ready to tear through the chapters and by the time you reach the end, you’ll be excited to read it all again for a second time!
The Arcadian Archives: The Light of Souls is a deeply engaging read, with characters so well-crafted that you can’t help but connect with their struggles. Alyh4x weaves a compelling narrative that pulls you into the world and keeps you eagerly turning the pages. The book strikes a balance between the tension and survival dynamics of stories like The Walking Dead and the epic, far-reaching conflicts of Star Wars. Each chapter leaves you craving more, as the intricate plot unravels in surprising ways. Alyh4x’s storytelling and character depth truly stand out, making this a must-read for fans of sci-fi with heart. Just be prepared for a story that lingers with you long after you've finished.
If you love the Horizon games and Stephen King's Dark Tower series (and a dash of will they-won't they romance) you will LOVE this book! This story gripped me by page 6. AlyH4x got right into the worldbuilding and was able to build the world while weaving the story in just a few paragraphs. The conflict and the characters were also built up right away so I was fully invested in the quest. I really enjoyed the magic system and its ties to souls. The romance is (so far) a slow-burn, forced proximity love. I was so enchanted with this book and the ending set up the rest of the series so that I cannot wait for more!

Well that turned fascinating very quickly. I was barely 2% in and thought I wouldn't like it but by 7% or so I was so hooked I read the whole thing in around 2 hours. Incredible storytelling, fascinating premise that I got just enough of to be excited, and overall left me wanting the next book ASAP.
The Light of Souls is a YA fantasy novel following Avery, a twenty year old girl running away from a tyrant guardian that abused her. She finds herself in the town of Farewell where many wonderful people protect her, teach her how to protect herself, help her learn about the world she truly lives in, and bring out her hidden magic. This book is filled with robotic beasts, guilds, castles, technological ruins, and mages. It is a unique world that you will be drawn into and not want to leave.
Avery is a great FMC. She has so much trauma to unload, but reacts appropriately. She has many demons in her closet and still finds bravery through her fear. She is determined to learn and grow, but isn’t the cliche of being suddenly the best at magic and swordsmanship after only a month of practice. She still is bested and bested often even with being a quick learner. Definitely realistic. I loved the description of each of the robotic beasts and would pay to have Milo’s illustrated book of each of the mechoids.
I really enjoyed the side characters that came into the picture. I did feel that they were lacking some depth besides Milo. And I think the only reason for this is because there was so much world to build (which got tons of great information). But I still think they are great friends and I want to know more about each character. I am excited to watch them grow and become this force to contend with.
The only other small complaint is the lack of more information about the gods that gave power. There are mentions of them and a small backstory, then a tease of the importance of eye color, and then no more information. I know this is a series though, and I am impatiently waiting for more books to delve further into the lore and mythology surrounding this world. I know that it will be brilliantly delivered when the time comes to learn.
Anyone that loves Herizon Zero Dawn, dungeons and dragons, a fantasy world filled with a unique magic system, and a strong but realistic FMC, this is the book for you!
Thank you Booksirens and AlyH4x for allowing me to read this novel as an ARC!
This book took me by surprise with how this was such a refreshing take on sci-fi and fantasy. Reminded me of when I read the Lunar Chronicles.
I loved how the author merged the use of magic and technology while still managing to keep that touch of old-school fantasy. And also the fact that Avery didn't become the best swordsman in just a few months.
It is a gripping story. I was pretty invested in the world building and the plot from the start. The mechoids are rather fascinating creatures and how they've managed to survive despite the technology being outdated for decades is something I would want to learn more about in the next book, along with more use of the magic aside from that of a few characters.
I wish we had some of Rhyker's backstory though. A little bit more to understand his hot and cold mood swings. But still he was quite a likable character.
Tropes: • Found family • Betrayal • Hidden magic
Really looking forward to the next book and how Avery is going to take control of her life and her destiny. 🫶🏽
- - - - —— - - - - ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ - - - - —— - - - - * The Light of Souls was SO good! Part of me is a little sad that I read it, because now I have to wait for the second installment of The Arcadian Archives! * This book has a few reader favorites such as: a slow burn enemies to possible lovers (later) subplot, found family, a grumpy yet heroic male interest, and an amazing FMC who actually works to earn her strength and freedom! * For Fantasy and Sci-Fi fans specifically, this books features a technology driven “apocalypse”, a second chance society, all of the magic, all of the (forbidden) technology, a society recovering from the messes of previous generations, and a still raging battle betwixt them! * To say I’m obsessed might be an understatement! I loved the characters, I personally can’t wait to get to know Harvey, Harris, and Malcom more. I can just imagine the trouble they got into when they were younger! * I can’t wait to get more information about this intriguing world, Avery’s past, and these fun characters!
What a fun read! I really enjoyed the mix of dystopian future with magic and fantastical elements. Our FMC is running away from a bad situation with the goal of gaining her freedom from the man that's controlled her for so long. She has to go on a journey of discovery to find out who she is and how to free herself. The world isn't safe to travel with mechoids roaming around, a left over remnant of the old world who relentlessly hunt humans. This story and the cast of characters REALLY grew on me as I read and the second half of the book had me hooked. I can't wait to see where this story goes and how all the things from this book are connected! A strong start to a series!
The Light Of Souls, book one of The Arcadian Archives, is a coming of age YA sci-fi/ fantasy book. It follows the witty FMC Avery, who discovers she is a mage. In a world where magic and technology is intertwined. On this journey of self discovery, Avery is trying to run from the past. Craving her freedom and trying to fight for it.
AlyH4x did an awesome job world and character building. It’s an easy book to follow that will keep you captivated. Where the post- apocalyptic sci-fi is just the perfect amount that meets the magical fantasy. It flows perfect and isn’t fast paced. There is a subplot romance that has a very slow paced enemies to lovers. It does end on a cliffhanger, as well.
I really enjoyed this read and grateful I was able to be an ARC reader. I can’t wait for the next book and it’s definitely worth checking out!
Loved the book! Right from the start I loved the engaging writing style. The world building was amazing: with mechoids (evil robots), sword fights and the magic system. I also found the whole idea of magic connected with soul very interesting. I found each character including the side ones that mattered in the story very well written. They are not just there as a filler. Most of them have a past and a history you would want to know. I loved all of them! Finally really loved Avery's character. I liked her grit, her perspective how she is trying her best to remain strong and fight off Sinclair despite her odds. One thing I loved about the story is that the main plot is the mystery and the adventure of Avery's journey on becoming powerful in her won right to fight off Sinclair.
The book ends in a cliffhanger! But just at the right time. I can't wait to find out the whole mystery with Avery's soul, her equation with Sinclair and Avery's journey to the mage's council. Looking forward to Book 2. A must read!
Thank you so much author for the e-ARC. It was a wonderful experience reading your story filled with adventures! All opinions are my own.
I really like how this book is written & formatted so that reading it is very effortless, everything just flows nicely. the chapters are also perfect length for me, not too long to bore, not too short to make me feel like im running in place. im totally immersed in this story and rly rly HAVE to read the next books.
plot & worldbuilding wise, its interesting. the author drops bits and pieces of info throughout the story that just keeps me flipping pages after pages trying to find answers cuz with all the mysteries, i deffo have A LOT of questions
This book was such a breath of fresh air and a joy to read. It’s a perfect post-apocalyptic sci-fantasy that engages the reader with an intelligent, yet flawed heroine (Avery) as she navigates a world that’s both ancient and futuristic. I really enjoyed Avery as a main character because she feels like a real person. The romantic subplot was the icing on the cake, though. And at first, I wasn’t sure if I’d like Rhyker, but he grew on me. The only thing that I wasn’t really a fan of was the cliffhanger ending, but overall, this was a five star read for me. The premise is great, the writing is fantastic, and I enjoyed reading the book.
Also, thank you to AlyH4x and Book Sirens for the free copy in exchange for the review!
When I first began writing this book, I was driven by creating a story that I wanted to read. Avery's journey through a world balanced on the edge of technology and magic became a deeply personal adventure for me, and I hope it feels just as immersive to you. Whether you're unraveling the mysteries alongside Avery, holding your breath during tense moments, or finding pieces of yourself in the story, I'm grateful you're here.
I'd love to hear your thoughts: What surprised you? What made you rage? Did anything cause you to pause?
Thank you for being part of this world. Happy reading!
The moment I finished the book, my first thought was where is the second part?
Quite honestly, I was surprised by the direction of the book after the initial few chapters. The storyline did not disappoint. It's the perfect mixture of romance, intrigue, magic and conflict. I can't wait to see those who deserve punishment, getting it in the next book or even the one after that. Overall, the characters are extremely likeable and relatable, which is what I tend to look for when evaluating whether I would reread a book or read the next book in a series.
I did like the overall flow of the book. I prefer the chapter names over the POV changes in the book. The chapter names lend the book a more curious feel because the reader would definitely want to find out what the chapter name refers to every time they read a new chapter.
Apart from that, I found a few grammatical and language errors, which I am sure are being worked on so that is not a deal breaker for me.
Avery is such a resilient character in the book. No matter where you are in life, it's hard not to identify with at least some of her struggles. One can't help but love Milo, Leah and the other supporting characters. While Rhyker elicits groans of frustration from the reader, it is hard to not admire him.
I think the book left. mewith. a lot of questions, in. a good way of course, because that means I can't wait to devour the next book in the series!
I adore books with a strong female MC who's willing to stand on her own, and this story has exactly that. While I do not mind Rhyker's presence in the book, I do hope the next book continues to offer Avery the same amount of space in the book.
Avery was bound to the blood tyrant by magic, he became her "guardian" after her mother passed. He was set on making her his heir to the elaborate illegal business he did behind the shadows. She wanted nothing to do with him and had planned her escape for some time. While he was away, she escaped and made it to a different empire, the one her mother used to reside in before she was involved with the tyrant. Avery quickly learns there is more to her than meets the eye and her "guardian" has taken away what made her whole.
The Lights of Souls was difficult to read at first. There were several times when I struggled to get through a paragraph. It wasn't until she started going on patrols with the guild that I got into the story around 50%, I think. I feel there was a flaw in the story regarding the longevity of staying in a particular village while on the run from a tyrant who has a magic hold on you. She knew what he was capable of and the reach he held within their world, yet she went on to make friends and train putting everyone around her in danger to learn more about herself and her mother's past.
I wanted to love this book; I couldn't get past the way the main character stayed for a long period in a village on the run from a man with immense reach. Maybe Avery's decisions will make sense in book two.

The Light of Souls by AlyH4x offers an engaging and enjoyable reading experience. The characters are a highlight, filled with personality and depth, making them both fun and exciting to follow throughout the story. Their interactions are lively, and their growth throughout the plot is satisfying.
The writing is accessible, with a clear and easy-to-follow style that allows readers to stay immersed in the world without feeling bogged down by complicated language or confusing structure. The pacing is steady, and the narrative keeps you interested from start to finish, offering a mix of intrigue, adventure, and emotional moments.
That said, while the story is captivating, it occasionally feels a bit predictable or familiar in certain aspects. Some readers may find themselves wishing for a little more depth in the world-building or a more unexpected twist. Overall, The Light of Souls is a fun read with strong characters and a straightforward, engaging plot, though it may not break new ground for fans of the genre.
A solid 3.5 stars – worth reading for its charm and entertainment value!
The Light of Souls as the name suggest ,will entirely lighten your soul with its captivating plot.. The genre is Romantasy x Sci Fi , where the female protagonist have the existential crises, not knowing her maternal or paternal backgrounds and working under a wicked lord Sinclair, who casted a spell on her to keep her tamed and that makes her move on a quest to find her identity landing in the town of "farewell", where she found some real gem of a people to be with her against all the odds..
The MMC and FMC both are strongheaded, firm and have pragmatic personalities however they are enemies from the get go.
On one hand its about mages and demonic magic and on other hand it reins in whole technology aspect aka bots named "Mechoid" as well.
This book is ahead of its time and plot is well laid.. Author did a fantabulous job at penning down the details and this book stands tall at a five star bar..
The Light of Souls is a well-written debut that introduces ‘The Arcadian Archives’ series. The seamless intertwining of fantasy and science fiction captured my little YA loving soul from chapter one and held my attention until the last page. This story is set in a unique and intriguing post-apocalyptic world, where magic and technology co-exist to create an action-packed adventure that offers exciting quests, training sequences, and gripping fight scenes. The characters are memorable, well-developed, and the connections between them are compelling. I was so excited to receive this ARC and will keep my greedy, epic-fantasy-loving eyes peeled for the next book in the series!
Blending science fiction and fantasy, The Light of Souls took me through the quaint life of Farewell before pulling the rug from under my feet by forcing Avery to make a very difficult decision. I liked the mechoids, and the magic system, but for me, the mentor character stole the show. Harvey is Snape, if Snape went to therapy and improved himself. The banter between Avery and the (I'm guessing) love interest grew endearing with every encounter. Even the minor characters were full of personality. And I have no words for Avery. She is everything you want in a protagonist. She is smart, quick-witted, and powerful, but also flawed, stubborn, and hasty. Dimensions! We love those. I can't wait to read the rest of the series.
This book was SO good! The world building was great! I am intrigued to know more about the mechs! It took time for me to get to this book but once I started, I DEVOURED IT! Truly could not put it down! I am so curious to learn more about the characters as the next books progress. Avery is a fascinating character. I feel like we only got a glimpse of what's to come for her and her gaggle of compadres!
No romance. Lots of actions. Lots of information. For the amount of detail we are given about the world as a whole, it didn't feel like it was dragging on. Well done. Im excited for the next book and need it... IMMEDIATELY! Lol. Thank you for trusting me with your work of art! I loved it!
"The Light of Souls" by Alyh4x was a roller coaster of a read! In a world made of magic and science Alyh4x brings us an adventure filled with epic battles, both with enemies and ones self. The FMC goes on an adventure to find herself and answer questions about her past and along the way encounters new friends and more than a few metal monsters. Alyh4x has done a marvelous job bringing this witty and feisty FMC to life in this page gripping debut novel.
The Light of Souls by AlyH4x is a gripping mix of magic and steampunk, set in a richly imagined post-apocalyptic world. Avery’s journey of self-discovery and rebellion is both heartfelt and action-packed, supported by well-developed side characters and a hint of slow-burn romance. The intricate world-building, complete with cybernetic Mechoids and soul-connected magic, keeps readers hooked, though the cliffhanger ending may leave some yearning for more closure. A fantastic start to The Arcadian Archives series—engaging, emotional, and brimming with potential.
First, this story drew me in from the very beginning. The writing was very well done and flowed flawlessly. The characters were so lovable and fun to follow. I have no bad things to say about this book… except I have to wait for the next installment because of the cliffhanger it was ended on. If you love fantasy, give this book a read! It’s definitely worth it. 5/5.
What a spot to end on. Avery and Rhyker's banter is everything. It's giving enemies to lovers and I am here for it. As a strictly standalone romance reader, I will 100% be coming back for book two for their back and forth. World building was amazing. I could actually imagine the environment which I usually have trouble doing when reading. Enjoyed the depth of side characters and how we really got to know and love them through their love for Avery.
5⭐️ A sci-fi/fantasy read with Mages, robots, magic… Plus, a sassy fmc with a broody master swordsman mmc… COUNT ME IN😍🥰 The Light of Souls had me hooked start to finish and left me wanting more. I have literally absolutely nothing bad I could even IMAGINE saying about this book.
Amazing story! I really like the mysterious circumstances and the mix of magic and technology. Characters are great, I’m looking forward to the next one!!

"The Light of Souls" is an amazingly crafted breakout novel. It is set in a world that is unlike any I have experienced before, giving the reader that post-apocalyptic vibe, but putting this crazy new spin on it. The author does a fantastic job immersing the reader in the world of Arcadia, while also making ties to today's technology. As a bit of a tech junkie myself, this spoke to me on many levels. Then there are the characters…. Oh man. The reader is given just the right amount of story so that it really pulls you, but yearning for more.
I highly recommend this to any one that enjoys fantasy, or science fiction, or technology, or…..well anyone. There is something in it for everyone.
I would also like to point out that the book is crafted in a manor that it will easily speak to the YA reader and adults alike.
Amazing story that is authentic, real, and keeps you guessing as to what is coming next. Hard to believe this is the author's first book, but easy to tell it definitely won't be the last. Author does a great job mixing in excellent dialog, essential story details, and very good action. Can't wait for the next book in the series so I can find out what happens next!
