Timid Californian, Cara, has rented a remote cottage in Scotland for a vacation before starting her new job. But her peace is shattered when an attractive stranger arrives unexpectedly. For the quiet Cara, Steph, whose buzzcut is as sharp as her chainsaw, is possibly the last person she wants to share her retreat with.
After her girlfriend cleared out their flat and disappeared, Steph needs a reset, and her gran’s peaceful cottage is just the place. She’ll chill over Christmas and work on her chainsaw sculptures. However, she hadn’t planned on having to share the cottage with a stranger who also wants to be alone.
But when a snowstorm blasts through the country, Steph and Cara have to make the best of it. At least they have food, shelter, and a bed.
One bed.
Is their forced proximity and sizzling chemistry the chance for each of them to hit the reset button in their lives? Or is it the chance of something much more?
A sexy lesbian Christmas romance that’s low in angst but high in all the feelings!
A.L. Brooks was born in the UK but currently resides in Frankfurt, Germany, and over the years she has lived in places as far afield as Aberdeen and Australia. She works 9–5 in corporate financial systems and her dream is to take early retirement. Like, tomorrow, please. She loves her gym membership, and is very grateful for it as she also loves dark chocolate. She enjoys drinking good wine and craft beer, trying out new recipes to cook, and learning German. Travelling around the world and reading lots and lots (and lots) of books are also things that fight for time with her writing. Yep, she really needs that early retirement.
I have a lot of respect for authors who decide to leave their publisher to go indie and take matters into their own hands. And I love that for her first indie book, A.L. Brooks chose to give us a Christmas romance. And one of my favourite tropes, at least when it comes to wintery stories: only one bed.
After her girlfriend reveals herself to only care about her money, Steph dreams of her grandmother’s Christmas, in the small Scottish cottage her sister Emily now owns, overflowing with decorations and the smell of hot chocolate. With Emily’s blessing, Steph fills her van with her chainsaw sculpture gear and gets on the road, only for the van to expire just as it delivers her to her destination. Which turns out to be occupied already. Cara is enjoying a peaceful break before she starts her new job in the UK, having left the US behind her. Between her lack of transportation and the snowstorm that naturally makes driving anywhere impossible anyway, Steph has no other choice but to intrude on Cara’s solitude.
I’m in full holiday mood, and A Christmas Chance was a nice addition to my Christmas reading list. I enjoyed the contrast between quiet Cara and Steph the creative tornado, and the way they embrace their differences. Their connection is believable and in true Brooks fashion, it’s both hot and cute. There’s very low angst, the lack of communication makes sense as the story takes place over a brief period and the resolution is simple yet not rushed. I only wish the relationship between Steph and her sister was a bit more developed, it didn’t completely feel logical to me, the distance between them didn’t really mesh with everything else—I’m trying not to spoil here so if it isn’t clear, go read the book!
One of my favourite scenes is a photoshoot of Steph working on her art, and it progressively shows Cara as more than a timid interloper. It also reminded me of the world’s favourite lesbian woodchopper, Nicole Maple Coenen, which only added to the fun.
This was just what I needed it’s sort, sweet, spicy and beautifully written.
If you’re looking for a romantic, Christmas holiday read in a gorgeous snowy setting packed with heat and all the feels then this one’s for you. I’m happy sighing right now and have a huge smile on my face.
A cottage in the outermost region of Scotland, two strangers meeting by chance and forced to spend several weeks together after being snowed in? Imagine this, it’s almost Christmas, snow everywhere, a fireplace burning, and when you open the door of the cottage you rented, you find inside a beautiful woman?
If A Christmas Chance isn’t every single lesbian’s dream… funny, spicy and so adorably romantic as love at first sight can only be.
After the end of her relationship with a coworker, Cara decides to leave California and move to the UK to take on a new role within her event planning company. But before starting her new job, she decided to rent a remote cottage in the North of Scotland to decompress and refocus on where she wants her life to go. Little did she know that the cottage owner’s sister had the exact same idea. Upon returning from a walk and noticing a stranger inside the cottage, all of Cara’s ideas of a quite downtime go out of the window. The snow has blocked all roads and all hotels in the nearby town are booked: Steph, as she says her name to be, is stuck in the house with Cara, with nowhere else to go and only one bed to share.
A.L. Brooks knows how to pack romance, spice and humor in a novel that is short and easy to read, the perfect choice for this cold and snowy season.
I liked Steph’s character, a soft butch with shaved hair and tattoos, who looks all frosty and menacing at the beginning, but then reveal herself to be nothing but a big teddy bear? I kind of see myself a bit in her. Hard outer shell, soft and mushy all inside, and a bit of a scaredy cat?
And Cara? Non-confrontational character, but when pushed to her limits she gets out her fire and stands her ground?
With the festivities coming up, I am sure many of us will be so busy that even reading time will be less, but the fact that A Christmas Chance is less than 200 pages long makes it a perfect, relaxing and satisfying reading, maybe while sipping hot chocolate and staring at the snow falling outside.
Ps. I bet you will laugh out loud at a particular scene as I have…
Cara and Steph, who have never met, unexpectedly have to share a one bedroom cabin in Scotland over the holidays. Both characters are warm and friendly with good chemistry. An all around enjoyable Christmas read, cosy with plenty of heat as well.
Lovely and delightful Christmas novella. Butch MC with tattoos and a dream to carve with a chainsaw? Um, yes please! It’s low angst, fluffy, spicy, forced proximity, holiday joy. If you need a great little holiday read, pick this up. Steph and Cara will not disappoint.
Steph needs time away after a breakup, and so phones her sister Emily to borrow their gran’s cottage in the far northeast of Scotland over Christmas. After a hilarious mixup, Steph makes her way north, with a breaking down van and a threatening snow storm. Cara rented the cottage in Scotland from Emily for a few weeks after being transferred by her work from her home in California, to being based in London. She needed the time away from work and from her stressful life before beginning her new chapter working all over Europe. After Steph’s van finally gives up just a short distance from the cottage, and the snow storm hits with full force, there is a tense confrontation between the two women. They eventually find a balance, and by the time the roads are open again and the van is fixed, Cara doesn’t want Steph to leave. There are some beautiful parts and some incredibly sad moments - especially when the women part. But there is a happy ending. This is very much an isolated story, with only the two women, and occasional contact with Cara’s best friend Sabrina and Steph’s sister Emily. I felt as though the story is made up of only their time in Scotland. The Epilogue of their life together later seems to be an add-on, just to satisfy the happy-ever-after requirement of this type of story. Apart from that, this is certainly a five star story.
Cara and Steph find themselves booked at the same cabin. Can an artsy butch and organized femme survive the double booking? If you like a cozy cabin, snowy Christmas and tons of spice, take a chance on this holiday read.
Steph has headed to her gran’s cottage in Scotland with plans to get way after her girlfriend left, leaving her with nothing. Upon arrival she finds Cara, taking a vacation before starting her new job happens to be staying at the cottage too. With a snowstorm blasting, they have no choice but to make staying there together work.
I loved the contrast between Steph and Cara, but thought they handled the situation they found themselves in very well given all they had actually both been through. After the initial spikiness and wariness of one another that came from the shock of neither of them getting what they planned, they actually got on quite well and there was a definite spark both of them tried to ignore. There were some brilliantly comedic moments, especially with Cara freaking out when she saw Steph outside with a chainsaw.
There were so many moments throughout this story making me sigh with happiness, and Cara had some really melt my heart moments in her conflict over whether she wanted Steph to leave when an opportunity presented itself after the storm. They suffered as all couples do in great romances with a lack of communication leading to assumptions that definitely could have been a one way street to heartbreak, but luckily there short time confined together had a greater impact on both of their emotions. More so for Cara as she really was the one who needed to drive that what she felt for Steph was more than temporary and that she hadn’t gone back to America as Steph had assumed.
Such a great story that I really really enjoyed. Such a great winter romance with a Christmasy cosy feel.
I adored this beautiful story. A brilliant way to start the seasonal reading.
The characters were fantastic and the feel was real and cosy.
Did I get a sexy female wood cutting flannel videos vibe … hells yes I did and I was all for it. Did I chuckle out loud several times at the humour weaved through … you bet. Were the smexy scenes cold shower worthy … abso-bloody-lutely. It was a brilliant holiday fling turned something else and the way it all flowed and came together was perfection. Highly recommend for a feel good holiday read that’s well written and an intimate snapshot in to these characters lives.
A deliciously light - stuck in a cabin with, uh oh, only one bed - holiday novella. Expect: No angst, a tiny droplet of conflict, very likable characters and a seriously good amount of steam.
I received an advance copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Steph is done with her golddiger ex-girlfriend. What she needs is a few weeks of peace and quiet in her family cabin in Scotland. Some uninterrupted time to work on her wood sculptures and get back to herself before Toxic Tiana sucked the life out of her. Yes, she is a hopeless romantic looking for her one and only, but clearly Tiana from Texas wasn’t it. Steph is putting the search for true love on hold for now. Arriving at the cabin just before the forecasted snowstorms will hit, Steph is not amused to find out her sister rented out the cabin for the next three weeks. To an American woman no less. Can Steph’s life get any worse?
Cara returns from her fresh winter walk near her rental cabin to find a strange woman on her couch. What the actual F? Cara rented this quaint little place to get away from people and recenter herself after a disastrous relationship. A few weeks of blissful solitude before starting her new job in the new year. This strange and grumpy British intruder was not in the plans. Too bad they are stuck together for at least a few days before this Steph woman can leave due to the snow. After the initial uncomfortable days surviving in each other’s space, Cara finds out that behind the grumpiness lies a kindhearted and sweet soul. And did she mention the package that soul comes in is spectacularly sexy? The way Steph wields that sculpting chainsaw…oof hotttt! Maybe being stuck together isn’t the worst development ever.
Steph and Cara are really lovely characters. Each with their own distinct personalities and you can really see them work as a couple despite their differences. The storyline itself is uncomplicated but entertaining. I laughed out loud quite a few times with little gems like this: ‘..with Cara looking as if she was ready to devour Steph. And Steph would happily lay down on a plate and hand Cara a knife and fork.’
A.L. Brooks writing is not only funny, she also never disappoint in the spice department. And this one definitely delivers. If you are in need of some extra spiciness, Steph and Cara will heat things up in no time!
A Christmas Chance is the perfect book to cuddle up with in winter or at any other time of the year actually. It’s light, fluffy, hot and just a very fun read!
A copy of the book was provided to Sapphic Book Club in exchange for an honest review.
A wonderful, jolly Christmas romance. Californian Cara, is on a must needed vacation before starting a new job posting, so naturally she takes a three week vacation in snowy Scotland during the holidays. Steph, coming off a recent breakup, decides that spending time in her family's cabin in a remote part of Scotland is just the answer. Too bad that is the same cabin Cara is staying in and a storm is snowing everyone in. What will strangers, Cara and Steph do while snowed in their cabin with only one bed?
I really enjoyed this holiday, one bed romance. I have always been fan of Hallmark holiday movies and this reads just like one. I liked both of the characters, Cara an event planner does not like confrontation, so getting stuck with a complete stranger definitely pushed her boundaries. While Steph is trying to get her chainsaw caving business up and running but not sure how. I liked that they both help each other while also enjoying each others company. Although, Cara's bestfriend, Sabrina my be my favorite. I love her interactions with Cara and her unwavering belief that Steph is a serial killer.
All in all, I really enjoyed this holiday treat. I would recommend for fans of AL Brooks and hallmark holiday movies.
Cara from California is on holiday before she starts her in job in London. Three week in a cottage in Scotland the perfect place to reconnect with herself. Steph is going to her grandma's cottage to help clear her head after her breakup and do what she loves chainsaw curving. The problem is a big snow storm comes and there now were to go. Christmas magic works but each has a different reason in their head why they would not work out as a couple when the time come to leave the cottage. A wonderful Christmas story of joy
I am absolutely in love with Cara's and Steph's story! The chemistry between them is off the charts, adorable. This is exactly what I was needing and wanting when I was looking for a holiday story to lose myself in. My heart is so happy!
A Christmas Chance has the traditional makings of a cute holiday romance. In this tale, Cara and Steph are two single women, snowbound in a remote house that only has one bed. The story arc is engaging and includes several fun scenes. Steph’s stated love of stomping on cockroaches is one comment this reader will remember for a while. Overall an enjoyable, low angst story with the expected HEA.
Cute quick story about two people who meet by accident in a snowstorm in Scotland.
Cara, a tiny 5'8" (what, she was described as being weak-looking, fragile, not as strong as she actually turned out to be, etc. etc., so, tiny; she is shorter than the other woman, at least) woman rents a cabin in Scotland for a few weeks, I believe three, to transition from being based in America, to being based in London. She does event thingies. Bah. I meant, she took a "brief" (whimpers) vacation of three weeks between moving. The whimper is for, who the heck gets 3 weeks of vacation? mmphs.
Got distracted. So, Cara has a job that demands that she interacts with a bunch of people setting up events, getting security, getting people's websites to have more viewers, etc. etc. Despite this people focused job, Cara is super timid and wants to avoid confrontation.
She meets the other main character in this book, Steph, when Cara wanders back from a hike to find some odd things. Fire going. Lights on. Tall woman stretched out on the sofa. You know, odd things she hadn't left when she went on her hike.
Cara's there because she rented the place from Steph's sister. Steph's there because she needed some time by herself after a bad break up. She'd called her sister, but got the wrong information on whether or not the cabin was available.
Good story. Fun.
ETA: oh, right. So, it's Christmas time and a snow-storm has blanketed the area, Steph's van broke down, and Cara doesn't have a vehicle, so they are trapped together in the cabin. With one bed. And a super short sofa. So ...
As a side note, I believe I've forgotten how to do reviews.
Quite a few Christmas Sapphic Stories came out in November and December. I did not get to them all. I do enjoy reading holiday stories in January, February and March, still winter in the States. I am so glad I read this now. I didn’t rush it as I would have with other pending holiday books. I love the cabin story and I love the premise but mostly, this book made me laugh a lot. It was sweet and tender and supportive and loving. Something I expect from a AL Brooks book. I loved the characters, Steph and Cara. Both were dumped in not nice ways. Both were looking for a break to recharge before making changes in their life. Both enjoyed each others use of words of their dialect. Both found each other interesting. All these things made this story such a pleasure to read even if it’s not Christmas.
This was the perfect way to end my reading year. While the story follows a very common trope and the plot is pretty predictable, the characters are well developed and the writing is really good. The author takes the time to build the main characters' rapport before diving into what we all know is the enevitable connection. Although on the shorter side, the story does not feel rushed, taking its time to build up and makes you really fall in love with these two as they're trapped in a cozy cabin discovering their feelings for one another. I really enjoyed this sweet and spicy sapphic holiday romance.
This is a pretty traditional Christmas set romance with no huge surprises, some steam and a positive ending. The two MC’s are both recovering from bruising previous relationships and have no intention of getting involved when they find themselves in forced proximity during a Scottish blizzard and snow-in. But when there’re 2 single lesbians and only 1 bed, you can easily see what’s going to happen! There’s a bit of angst as both realise that what starts as a short term fling leads to some feelings…but the angst isn’t too long or drawn out. This was a nice, decently written, quick tale that was a perfect December read.
I love this book! Cara has rented a remote cabin in Scotland for three weeks. She needs to get ready for her new position in her company from California to the London office. Her peace is shattered when Steph shows up and makes herself at home. The cabin used to be owned by her grandmother and now by her sister. She'd no idea it was rented out. But Steph can't leave, her van broke down and they're snowed in. There is only one bed... This is a beautiful HOT, love story! 5 stars!
This is such a great story by Brooks, I mean, you can’t go wrong with any book by this author but I especially enjoyed this one. The main characters just seem to click, after the initial meeting that is. After the slow start they just fit together perfectly. I’ll definitely be rereading this.
This is one of the sweetest right place wrong time romances I've read in a while. Cara and Steph meet on holiday and agree to share a rental cottage after mix up. What ensues is a sweet romance about two people finding exactly what they need but are afraid to accept. This is a a steamy, low angst romance that will have you cheering for a HEA.
This book opens with two women, strangers to one another, snowed in together at a cozy cottage over the holidays. It had a cute “lumberjack butch meets soft femme” dynamic that delivered everything I was looking for: charming cottage vibes, a festive Christmas romance, the classic forced proximity trope, and a sapphic love story, of course. A cute and quick read that’s perfect for the season!
Steph and Cara’s story starts out as stranded together during the holiday. Slowly, they develop feelings for each other and decide to have a holiday fling. The fling takes on a life of its own as feelings grow. However, they both don’t realize the other wants to see where the relationship could go. I enjoyed this quiet Christmas romance.
Is it a rebound or are we second guessing each time you come together and then have to leave for one reason or other or something like your job? Both have thought they were love before and then grew ugly. How to make sure this is the One? Enjoy!
