Meet Spike the Stemosaurus: he's curious, great with numbers, and about to save the day!
Not everyone has heard of Spike, the Stemosaurus. Unlike the other dinosaurs, he's small, quiet, and rather weak. But Spike has boundless curiosity. He loves math, making inventions, and discovering new things about the world around him. Which is why the other dinosaurs come to him when they discover something LARGE heading right toward the earth. It's a giant meteor!
What's a STEM-loving dinosaur to do? Save his friends, that's what! Spike is about to come up with the invention of a lifetime…

Thanks so much to NetGalley for the free Kindle book! My review is voluntarily given, and my opinions are my own.
Kids will love this book that combines dinosaurs, math, and a touch of a sci-fi (time-travel). The book shows the dinosaur problem solving using math, but there is nothing in the story asking the kids to help with those problems. So, parents or educators don't need to worry about the children's math skill levels when reading the book.
I honestly think this was super cute and I would read it to my son who is five and loves dinosaurs. Do I know if this is an actual dinosaur? No, I don't. Does it make me want to do research to see if it is? Yes. I will say that the ending was kind of a little abrupt, but it would make a great read for parents with their kids OR for little minds who love to read. :) Also, I love the concept of some dinosaurs making it out of extinction.
Dinosaur books are always a hit in our house and this story was perfect for my 6 year old son. He appreciated a lead character that loves math (just like him) and approaches questions with a lot of curiosity. The illustrations were full of bright colors and little details and they complimented the text well. Neither of us could predict how this would end and while it is a bit fanciful, isn’t that what children’s books are meant to be?
Thank you to Andrew Root, Two Lions publishing and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Stemosaurus may not be as strong or tall as some of the others but he's smart and curious! When tragedy strikes Stemosaurus uses his brains to save his friends.
I really like the illustrations in this book. As a parent of a child who is often the small one in his friend group and more into building or reading than sports, this is a nice book to remind kids that all talents and skills have value!
Stemosaurus is a quirky, colorful, fun picture story about dinosaurs and one brave and clever dino in particular. Written by Andrew Root and illustrated by Mark Chambers, it's due out 22nd July 2025 from Brilliance (Amazon) on their Two Lions imprint. It's 40 pages and will be available in hardcover and ebook formats. For Kindle Unlimited subscribers, this book will be included in the KU subscription library to borrow and read for free.
The illustrations are whimsical, beautiful, and colorfully appealing. There are lots of small details (like the flowers, background figures, scenery details) which invite readers to stop and take a closer look. The text is in simple free verse and easy enough for new readers to master and understand. It's also a great candidate for a read along in the classroom (with "roar-alongs" from students) or a read-together with an older sibling or adult.
The basic message of being yourself, problem solving, love of reading/learning, and diversity are all positively presented in a simple and accessible manner.
Four stars. A delightful read and it would make a great selection for public, school, or classroom acquisition, home use, or gift giving.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
While the story is a cute and fun read, it is important to note that this book would be extremely difficult for children to read with the amount of big words in it. As someone who teaches reading, I know my students would be unable to read this story, and even if having an adult read it to them, they would likely not know what a lot of the words mean, let alone how to read/say them. One word in particular that I don't think needs to be included in a children's book is "voracious". While I get the intent of using big words to fit the storyline of the "educated and smart" dino, the intended audience of the book also needs to be considered, or it can become severely frustrating for children and discourage them from reading if they have a lot of words they cannot read. Thus, I'd suggest making it more age-appropriate in terms of the wording/language used.
Overall, while the concept is great and has an important message, this will have be rated lower due to it not meeting the intended audience's needs. After the official publishing date, this review will be adjusted for any potential changes to the book.
However, the illustrations are very cute and the limited amount of text on each page and its display are perfect for a picture book and making it easy to follow along! The concept is also great, showing kids that everyone has their own strengths and that is A-Okay!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishing company Two Lions for this ARC. All opinions are my own.
This book was great, my daughter (5) at first was sad for Spike not being able to play the same way as his friends. She herself is fairly small so she related. Once the meteor showed up, she was very aware of it. "Oh Look I see it! It's getting closer!" She was very concerned for how they were going to get away. Once Spike made his invention she was thrilled to see that everyone had their part and could help out with their special thing. She was sure the time machine wasn't going to work, she didn't think it was made strong enough. She was so happy to see that they made it, "I didn't think it would work! I thought it would fall apart!" and she was so happy for Spike and his friends. From my side, I appreciated that Spike used each of his friends' talents at the end so that they all worked together in the best way they could. The ever growing meteor was surprisingly effective, I wasn't sure that my daughter was going to catch on to that, but she really did. The illustrations were cute, and I noticed the little gecko dino that showed up on every page. If this becomes a regular read, I'll definitely use it as something new to look for. All around, just a really cute dino book that shows that just because you're not as strong or fast as your friends, doesn't mean you aren't talented in a different way that can work together. We read this e-book through NetGalley.
Most young kids know about the typical dinosaurs. And this story has all the fan favorites: Rex, the Tyrannosaurus Rex, is frightening, strong and the notable King of the Dinosaurs. We also have Bruno, a brontosaurus, who is gigantic, powerful, and our faithful vegetarian. Terry, the fierce and aerodynamic Pterodactyl that takes to the skies. But then we also have Spike. He’s a smart, inventive, and curious Stemosaurus!
They all have great fun as friends, but Stemosaurus seems to come in last when competing in their activities (racing, wrestling, lifting boulders). But what Spike does excel in is all things STEM! He loves to build new inventions, even if they don’t work very well.
Good thing all these friends have different qualities because they are needed once they notice the fiery ball flying through the sky. It takes teamwork in order to survive the meteor heading their way. They need strength, height, speed, and brains to survive!
This book has great qualities. As a teacher, it shows students with different qualities in friends are respected and admired. Plus the need to work together to solve a problem.
Thank you NetGalley and TwoLions for the Advanced Readers Copy to review.
Beautiful illustrations, sweet storyline, the illustrations had fantastic little hidden details! The Traveling Book Fam loved this one! The kiddos grasped the concept of every one having their strengths and how working together highlights everyone's talents for a better outcome immediately!
0.5 off for me only because the math while it looked great was mostly gibberish! 😆 I know,I know! It's for the kids, but I would have loved a little Easter Egg of actual aerospace calculations.
"Dad's" Review: Really good little book for the girls (who love dinosaurs!). Funnily enough everyone's favorite dinosaur was highlighted however, there's no Brontosaurus anymore (RIP childhood favorites!). The depiction is closer to an Apatosaurus but if you want to stay with the *B* within the sauropods, you could always go with Braciosaurus!
Absolutely amazing alliterations throughout the book's breadth! Definitely going to be rereading this with the girls.
Thank you so much, Andrew Root, Mark Chambers, Lion Books, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book!
I absolutely loved this book! Stemosaurus is a dino-sized delight—full of charm, humor, and just the right dose of STEM magic. From the moment the quirky, lovable characters stomp onto the page, kids are hooked! The story cleverly sets up a problem, takes us on a giggle-worthy journey, and lands on a fantastic resolution—all while making STEM feel like an exciting adventure. The playful speech bubbles, expressive illustrations (which are amazingly cute!), and laugh-out-loud moments make this book a joy to read aloud. And that ending? Oh, it sparks curiosity in the best way, leaving little readers eager to ask questions and explore more!
As a teacher, I would absolutely use this in my classroom—even with my eighth graders! It’s such a fantastic way to introduce STEM concepts in a way that’s fun, engaging, and totally unforgettable.
Perfect for budding scientists, dino fans, and anyone who loves a story that’s as brainy as it is fun.
A massive thank you to Andrew Root, Two Lions and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my thoughts. Stemosaurus releases July 22nd—and you do not want to miss it!
Oh my GOODNESS! This book is awesome! My sons are big fans of dinosaurs, so we are always looking for dinosaur books with cute illustrations and fun storylines. Stemosaurus checks all those boxes! Not only are the illustrations bright and adorable, but the storyline is very clever and engaging! Each page has simple yet smart dialogue that is sure to hold your children’s attention until the very end.
I really love the premise and message behind this story! It centers on a little dinosaur who does not necessarily share the same dynamic qualities as his fellow dino friends. While they are big, strong, and fast, Stemosaurus is tiny, quiet, and studious. But we will discover that sometimes the qualities that make us different are the ones that make us special and unique. And in the case of Stemosaurus, those qualities could be useful and ultimately save his friends in the end!
This ending has such a cool twist! It’s always fun to see some magical realism in a children’s book! Highly recommend this book for families of young children! We will definitely be purchasing a physical copy once it releases!
Stemosaurus by Andrew Root is a delightful dino adventure that blends friendship, fun, and STEM!🦕✨
Check out my review on YouTube! @lifewithladyO #Stemosaurus #NetGalley
Our story begins with an introduction to a group of dino friends, each with their own roarsome talent 🦖🎨🎶🏃♂️. Then there's Spike the Stemosaurus — a curious, quiet, and clever little dino 📏📘 who’s a whiz with numbers and a master of invention! 🧠💡
As the dinos play and grow together, Spike spends his time reading 📖, solving math problems ➕➗, and building cool gadgets 🛠️ to try and fit in. But everything changes when a GIGANTIC meteor ☄️ threatens to crash their prehistoric party!
Will Spike use his scientific superpowers to save the day? 🧪🚀 Or will he hide in the shadows? 👀
This story is a dino-mite way to show kids how STEM is cool 🤓 and that everyone has their own unique gifts to share with the world 🌍💞. Me and my kiddo absolutely LOVED it! 🥰👩👦
Perfect for inspiring little scientists and inventors everywhere! 🔍🧬🎉
Stemosaurus was adorable and I will definitely be picking up a copy for my 3 and 1 year old boys.
In addition to teaching about dinosaurs, it has a wonderful message about knowing and valuing your strengths. As a group, the dinosaurs come together as a team to solve a difficult problem. Their solution utilizes each individual’s strengths and they work together to reach a desired outcome. Spike, self conscious of his high intelligence, proves pivotal to the group. Spike shows the reader that brains are just as important as brawn.
The illustrations were super cute and engaging. The speech bubbles were a little excessive and made the main text feel choppy and disrupted the flow. It was difficult to decipher in what order I should read the page.
I will definitely be recommending Stemosaurus to my mom friends with dino loving toddlers!
Thank you to NetGalley, Two Lions, and Andrew Root for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
What a lovely dinosaur book!! My kid is great at math and he saw numbers and wanted to read it. I love that it's about stem and has a good message. I think it's important that kids know they are all special, no matter what! Kids are always comparing themselves to others and so are adults! This was a great example on how everyone's differences are important.
The illustrations were stunning!! I loved how vibrant they were. I did have a little bit of trouble with the way it was formatted through Netgalley. I'm not going to dock the book for that though. I think this is a great book that all kids should read or have in their library! Yay, stem!!
Many thanks to Two Lions and Netgalley for an e-ARC. All thoughts an opinions are my own.
Sorry, I love children's books, but they need to make sense. Creating a fictional dinosaur is fun, especially one that loves math and science (STEM). This would teach the value of diversity and how each of us can bring our own strengths to the table. Everything goes wrong when this new dinosaur identifies an existential threat, creates a time machine, and lands in the present time among people. Bad move since dinosaurs don't exist in our current time, your kids know this, and so the message of the book will be lost to this fallacy. If Stemosaurus created the telescope, saw the existential threat and then built a boring machine to hide all the dinosaurs in the center of the earth, that would be a more satisfying, fun and fictional story that makes more sense.
I enjoyed this book so much! It clearly introduces characters, shows problem and resolution, uses speech bubbles, and is very humorous. I also love the integration of STEM. This is a good introduction to STEM for students/children and shows it in a fun way. The ending was also very engaging and is something students/children can ask questions about. It provides many learning opportunities. I would recommend this for Kindergarten - 3rd grade classrooms and any young fans of dinosaurs. I read this book on NetGalley in exchange for a review, but all my thought are my own :)
It's no secret that kids LOVE dinosaurs, so it's no question that many kids will absolutely ADORE this book. Additionally, this book brings something new to the realm of kids' books about dinosaurs: a nerdy dino! It's awesome that the author decided to create a lovable dinosaur that goes against the norm of big, strong, and scary. I believe that the Stemosaurus character will allow little ones that don't fit into the norm to feel seen and valued, just as Spike did. Lastly, the plot was well-organized, and clearly well-thought-out. The story flowed flawlessly, and every bit of it was just so, so clever. Bravo!
Stemosaurus is a great story to introduce kids to topics of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math)! This story is made up of engaging illustrations that bring STEM to life through dinosaurs! Throughout the story, Stemosaurus learns many important lessons that everyone should know. Stemosaurus and the other dinosaurs learn the importance of teamwork, friendship, helping others, and that everyone is unique in their own way, which makes them perfect the way they were meant to be. Stemosaurus is perfect for all and I can't wait to add this to my future classroom library!
Nah. A smart scientist dinosaur, that happens to spot *that* very meteor coming to Earth, uses some pulleys and the grunt work of his bigger, stronger buddies to come up with something that might just save their bacon. What it is is daft, the whole walking-on-hind-legs-only thing given to the brontosaurus is daft, and the design is fussy and not terribly appealing. I'd rather do without this silliness, I'm afraid – some kids will find it a three-star diversion, but it gets less from me. In no way a valid advert for STEM-based thinking.
I received an electronic ARC from Two Lions through the SLJ Day of Dialogue October 2025. Root creates a new dinosaur no one has heard of. Stemosaurus is quiet and curious and spends his time learning and experimenting. We first meet his friends who are much better known and then the author introduces him. I appreciate the serious undertones about accepting who you are and the strong humor that comes through clearly. In the end, Stemosaurus does save the day and his friends by inventing a time machine and escaping the giant meteor.
Spike is a stemosarus. He may not fly, race or have strength but he has brains. Spike is feeling lost while with the other dinosaurs until one day a meteor heads toward their area. They all band together to help solve the problem each using their own strengths. This book is a good discussion starter on talking about what makes everyone unique. The illustrations are cute and will delight any child.
This book was a HUGE hit with my dinosaur loving son. He is 9 years old so the writing was a bit too easy for him, but he loved reading it to his little brother who isn't as good with reading yet. The sentences were easy to follow and they loved the comic/graphic novel feel to the book. The pictures were super fun as well! Easy 5 star read for our family!
Thank you Two Lions and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Stemosaurus is a clever, fun, read with a hilarious surprise ending!
In Stemosaurus we meet Spike, a small, studious ‘Stemosaurus’. He’s not strong like T-rex and can’t fly like Terry the Pterodactyl. But because of his math skills he knows just what to do when his friends spot a meteor in the sky!
Me and my kids loved this book!
Thank you to Two Lions and Netgalley for an early release copy of this book!
Stemosaurus is releasing July 22nd, 2025-mark your calendar!
I am so grateful to have won this book in a giveaway for my 2 1/2 year old daughter who is OBSESSED with dinosaurs. We read it 4 times last night, she slept with the book in her bed, and then we proceeded to read it over and over all morning. This book is absolutely adorable and it great for kids who enjoy learning or need to learn STEM- or kids like mine who absolutely love dinosaurs. If I could give this book 6 stars, I would.
A fun romp where you meet Tyrannosaurus rex, Brontosaurus, Pterodactyl, and Stemosaurus. Each has traits to talk about. Spike a small dinosaur loves to learn about and invent through stem. With his cretaceous contraptions he isn't so short, weak, or awkward. But he warns others of a meteor coming he teleports the dinosaurs to present day in his machine. Colorful and fun story with dinosaurs coming to the present day.
Stemosaurus was a quick and fun read. Parents will enjoy reading this cute story to their littles. Delightfully illustrated, with pages full of vibrant colors and adorable characters. The book was great at describing each character. However, the storyline felt slightly rushed. The ending is abrupt but still very cute. Spike saves the day, just as the description explains
What a cute and unique Dino book! 🦕 I read this to my 3yo and 9yo separately and they both liked it. My 9yo is a little Stemosaurus himself, so I figured he’d get a kick out of it! I liked it and laughed at the clever storyline. It was way better than expected!
My four year old said, "5⭐️, I wish Spike and I could be friends in real life. Love the pictures, the whole book is 100% amazing, I could read it every day"
They especially loved the TARDIS-like picture. The artwork was cute, the story was perfect for their age (they're a curious, dinosaur, science, book lover.
