This is the first book in the Detective Caleb Reed Series.
I liked reading this story from Caleb's perspective and how he found Cassidy and how their life together became a reality for him after being hurt in n past relationships.
The absolute BEST thing you can do for authors is to shout about their books! Another book that I have to wait for the next one. 😢 I loved this book. Looking forward to reading more of your books.
Some stories don’t whisper their secrets - they pull you into the dark and make you listen to every heartbeat, every breath, every silence between moments. A Stranger Within by Jessica Lynn Sorensen is one of those stories. It’s a shadow-wrapped tale of loss, trust, and rediscovery that grabs hold from the first page and refuses to let go. The title isn’t just a mystery - it’s a question that lingers: how well do we really know ourselves when our past is a blur and danger hides behind every corner?
Detective Caleb Reed is driven by ghosts. His younger brother, Dustin, was abducted years ago, and the ache of that loss carved a path straight into his career in missing persons. Each case is a way to fill the void, to redeem himself one rescue at a time. But one late-night drive changes everything. He spots a woman standing alone on a deserted road - battered, disoriented, and with no memory of who she is. Against his better judgment, he stops, and in that one decision, two stories become one. Together, they set out to piece together the fragments of her past, uncovering dead ends, whispered threats, and a web of fear that stretches deeper than either of them expects. What starts as a mission of compassion quickly spirals into a fight for survival - and a test of whether two broken people can still trust enough to heal.
Sorensen knows how to craft characters that feel alive. Caleb isn’t just a detective - he’s a man defined by grief, guilt, and guarded hope. His pain hums through every page, his sense of duty acting as both anchor and weight. Then there’s the unnamed woman (we’ll call her Kate) - her confusion, her instinctive fear, her quiet resilience. She’s the mystery at the heart of it all, but she’s also the mirror reflecting Caleb’s own brokenness. Their connection builds with raw emotion and a fragility that feels painfully real. The supporting characters - each introduced with weight and purpose - add depth without diluting the main thread. Sorensen doesn’t waste a single name or line; everything feels intentional.
The pacing walks a perfect line between suspense and stillness. It moves with precision - never rushed, never dragging. The transitions between viewpoints and timelines flow with natural ease, mapping out a story that unfolds as much in emotion as in action. Sorensen’s descriptions are cinematic: the chill of the dark woods, the pulse of uncertainty under flickering lights, the heaviness of memory. You don’t just read this story; you feel it - the tension in your chest, the fear in your gut, the breath you can’t seem to catch when the truth edges closer. Every twist lands hard but earned, and the rhythm of the story keeps you turning pages long after midnight.
A Stranger Within is more than a mystery; it’s an exploration of what happens when trauma meets hope and two lost souls learn that trust is both the riskiest and most healing choice of all. If you want a dark, emotional, and gripping story that blends heartache with redemption, this re-release of Sorensen’s gripping thriller hits shelves and Kindle Unlimited on March 18, 2026 - and it’s one that will linger long after you turn the final page.
I would like to thank Jessica Lynn Sorensen for the opportunity to Alpha/Beta/ARC for A Stranger Within. As always, all reviews and opinions are of my own volition. I have not been offered any compensation, current or future, by the author or publisher for a fair and honest review.
‘A Stranger Within’, by Jessica Lynn Sorensen, offers a gripping story full of suspense and mystery.
‘A Stranger Within’ is now one of my favorite books; I just finished reading it. I was instantly drawn into the book because of its engaging characters and twisting plot. The author’s skillful storytelling keeps you guessing with unexpected plot twists.
The book’s most compelling situation is Cassidy’s difficult journey of self-discovery. I was deeply moved by her struggles. The story’s exciting and thought-provoking plot keeps you hooked until the end. Right as you believe you understand everything, a shocking plot twist will leave you stunned. The ending was a shocker, and I really want to talk about it, but I’ll avoid spoilers for those who haven’t read it.
I’m excited to hear from Cassidy; I believe her perspective will add a fascinating new layer to the story. I am especially eager to witness how her journey will blend with the primary narrative and expose further elements of the larger mystery.
Also, don’t forget that ‘Whispering Rain,’ the second book in the Detective Caleb Reed series, comes out in March 2025. Knowing that there’s more to come from this captivating story has me counting down the days. I’m thrilled to revisit this world and explore where the story goes next; the possibilities are endless. My list of favorite authors now includes Jessica Lynn Sorensen. You absolutely must read her books if you haven’t already!
Happened to come across this author by chance, She has a similar name to another I follow, so it was a little mix up. But I'm always looking to support indie authors so to me, it was a sign to give some interest and started here with this one. It’s a quick read, with a mystery woman, a hero detective whom of course has his own issues, and cases to be solved. Interesting and enjoyable start and I already have book two Whispering Rain downloaded and ready to read next.
This thriller was a nice quick read. At only 140 pages, somethings felt rushed. I think I'd enjoy a more fleshed out version better, but overall, I enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this series. I understand that there is a version of this story from Cassidy's perspective, but I would prefer to read the two books as an integrated novel.
Review: A Stranger Within by Jessica Lynn Sorensen "What on earth did I just read?" That is exactly how I have to start this review. I am writing this from the deepest part of my soul because this story completely blew me away. First, a massive thank you to Jessica Lynn Sorensen for providing me with an advanced copy. This book didn't just entertain me—it took over my life for a few hours. The Setup: Chills and Amnesia The story hits the ground running: a girl who doesn’t remember who she is and a mysterious man who steps in to help her. With every chapter, I felt myself sinking deeper into a mystery that quite literally gave me chills. The characters are so well-designed and developed that they felt 100% real. This story is going to live "rent-free" in my head for a long, long time. The Plot Twist: I Was So Wrong! Jessica is a master at keeping a reader hooked from the prologue all the way to the final page. I’ll admit it: I’m usually the guy who pays attention to every detail, and I thought I had the plot twist figured out in the early chapters. I was wrong. The author didn't make it easy for me, and when the real twist finally hit, I was speechless. A genuine "WTF" moment that left me staring at the wall. The Epilogue: A Total Jaw-Dropper I thought the final chapter was the end of the ride. I thought I was satisfied. Wrong again. The epilogue was a complete game-changer—a jaw-dropping conclusion that left me reeling and desperate for more. If you love psychological thrillers that mess with your mind and keep you guessing until the very last sentence, Jessica Lynn is the way to go. Quick Breakdown The Vibe: Dark, intense, and psychologically shattering. The Hook: A masterclass in pacing and "unreliable" reality. The Twist Factor: 10/10 (Don't even try to guess; you'll be wrong!). Final Feeling: Pure, shocked satisfaction. Final Rating: 5/5 Stars ★★★★★ A Note to the Author: Jessica, please keep writing stories like this. In a world that often feels like chaos, your books are like medicine for my soul. They allow me to disconnect and get lost in another world. Huge blessings to you and much success on this launch!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I noticed that chapter 29 was missing because it jumped straight from chapter 28 to chapter 30. At first I thought it was just a mistake and kept reading. Later I received an email explaining that a chapter had been left out, so I deleted the book and redownloaded it. After that everything was fixed and worked perfectly. Great storytelling by the way.
This book grabbed hold of me right from the jump and never once let go. First thing you see is a detective finding a woman with no memory sitting out on a lonely highway, and I was already locked in. The story aint just about solving some case. It digs into guilt, bad choices, and a man trying real hard to do what he thinks is right even when he clearly stepping into a mess.
Caleb feels like a real fella, not some perfect detective who always got the answers. He carrying regret around like extra weight and it pushes him into decisions that feel honest, even when you know they might blow up on him later. That is what makes the story work so well. The woman he takes in keeps things interesting too because every time you think you figured her out, the story throws something new at you and makes you question everything again.
The short chapters make this one mighty easy to keep reading. You tell yourself one more chapter and next thing you know a whole chunk of time gone. The slow burn romance grows natural and fits right into the story without taking over the mystery. It adds tension instead of slowing things down, and the suspense keeps building the whole way through.
What really sold me was how the ending pulled everything together. Nothing felt wasted and the payoff felt earned. By the time I finished, I was already wanting the next book because these characters stick with you longer than most.
This here is a strong start to a detective series with a gripping mystery and characters that feel real enough to know. It kept me interested from beginning to end and never once felt like a chore to read.
“I swear the weirdest shit happens in Washington.” — and Detective Caleb Reed is not wrong. 😮💨
This book hooked me from the very first scene. A desolate highway. A young woman with no memory. An abandoned shed. And a detective who absolutely cannot walk away. The setup alone had me locked in.
Caleb Reed is such a compelling main character. He’s driven by guilt over his missing brother, fueled by a full-blown hero complex, and determined to do the right thing—even if that means bending a few rules. Watching him take this mysterious woman into his home instead of handling it strictly by the book? Stressful in the best way. You know it’s going to complicate everything… and it does.
The amnesia angle was done so well. Is she a victim? A fugitive? Something far more dangerous? The layers unravel slowly, and I loved that constant sense of unease. Just when you think you have a handle on what’s happening, another twist creeps in.
The first-person POV pulls you right into Caleb’s head, making every doubt, every protective instinct, and every questionable decision feel personal. The slow-burn romance adds emotional depth without overpowering the suspense, and the short chapters make it ridiculously easy to say “just one more.”
Strong leads, sharp tension, a little grit, a little heat, and a mystery that keeps you guessing—this is a fantastic start to the Detective Caleb Reed series. I’m officially invested and absolutely ready for book two. 👏🔥
Well, this book had me on an emotional roller-coaster, that's for sure! My first book by this Author and it won't be my last. Jessica's writing is deep and intense, I found myself resonating with Caleb on so many levels. He really was 'damaged goods' because of the past and he found it hard to allow himself to just 'feel' with Cassidy and this caused friction in his relationship with her. The lack of trust from both of them was palpable, yet completely understandable.
I felt such empathy for Cassidy and what happened to her, it was gripping, following her journey into discovering who she was and then, questioning even THAT!
There were so many unanswered questions I had after that jaw-dropping ending that I had to immediately start on A Stranger Within - Cassidy's perspective to help me understand her story more deeply.
Thanks Jessica for a deeply compelling story that I just devoured :)
What if you woke up and had no memories of your life before?
This is what happens to Cassidy. She starts walking along the road after waking up dirty and bruised inside an abandoned shed. Caleb finds her, brings her home and helps her start to piece her life back together. But someone doesn't want her to remember.
What if the truth is scarier than not knowing?
As Caleb and Cassie start to piece her life back together they start imagining a life together.
I loved this book and can't wait to continue the series. Bonus points for nice short chapters that kept me reading late into the night.
Detective Caleb Reed has a haunting past. His little brother, Dustin was abducted from a fair when they were young, so when he finds a woman who doesn’t know her identity or anything about herself, he takes her in and tries to help her himself.
We get both POVs from caleb and cassidy (which is the name she gave herself). She doesn’t know if she can trust Caleb and he doesn’t know if she is telling the truth. I loved being able to read both perspectives, it doesn’t always work for everyone, but I loved how it flowed in this book! Can’t wait to read the next one!
WOW!!! There was so much to unpack in this psychological mystery thriller. Jessica did an absolutely amazing job pulling the reader in and making you feel like you were right there along for the ride with these characters. The intensity, mystery, fear of the unknown, the twists, the everything!! What an intense ride and I cant wait to read the rest of this series. This does deal with some heavy topics so check your trigger warnings.
Caleb Reed is a detective that works many types of cases. He has no idea the memories that will be stirred up when he stops to pick up a woman on the side of the road who is bleeding and has no idea what her name is. Working together, he and the woman eventually figure out not only her name, but also other secrets that are revealed along the way.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Caleb's past rips your heart out as you cheer him on to take a chance at a life he deserves. A mixture of crime, romance, and Caleb's past you can't read and turn pages fast enough to see what happens. The characters, storyline, and twists perfectly put together. Jessica Lynn Sorensen has a way with writing that grips you with every word.
This is my second book by Jessica. My first was Whispering Rain. I love both books. Well written, quick read. The characters are great. I'm going to read Cassidy's perspective now. I'm sure I will love it too. Highly recommend this series. And I definitely plan to read her other books as well!
I received an advance copy of this book and am leaving this review voluntarily. Caleb Reed is a detective with a past that haunts him. When he spots a woman on the highway he takes her in carelessly without knowing her full story. As such, has he opened himself up to harm? Is there a potential romance budding between them? Does she have a mental condition? Short book with a good twist. 4 stars
Yet another 5 star read by Jessica Lynn Sorensen. This book was fast paced, kept me hooked and needing to know what will happen next. I cannot wait for the sequel, to see what Caleb Reed gets up to next!
Had to go back and read this after realizing Whispering Rain was a sequel. Another great book, fast paced, great story line. Loved the characters. Enjoyed the twists and now can't wait to go back and read it from Cassidy's perspective
This is a good story that could have been better. The story gets a little off subject a bit, but overall an enjoyable read. Character development is decent and the protagonist is well defined.
Hell yes!! I absolutely loved this book!! Can't wait to read Whispering Rain next 😍 Let's go!! Keep them coming Jessica!! I'm a HUGE fan!! 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
This book was amazing!! I am a fan of Caleb’s character! The author’s writing is awesome! This was a fast paced and addicting!! I highly recommend this book!!
I was looking for a pallet cleanser after reading some lengthy books and found this one. I was completely hooked and read it in one sitting. I find this authors writing style to be great and easy to read. I am looking forward to reading more!
This was an interesting book full of lots of twists and turns. The author does a great job of taking you through a tangled web of details with lots of interesting and compelling ideas. Everything from kidnapping to gunshots and engagements can be found in the pages of this book. I would definitely recommend it!
No name. No past. No one looking for her. When Detective Caleb Reed finds her wandering along a dark highway, he assumes it’s just another case—until every lead comes up empty. No missing person reports. No digital footprint. It’s as if she never existed. As fragments of memory begin to surface—flashes of fear, the image of a car trunk, the echo of a stranger’s voice—Caleb becomes increasingly determined to uncover the truth. Haunted by his own family tragedy, he refuses to let another person disappear without answers. But the deeper they dig, the more dangerous the mystery becomes. Because sometimes forgetting isn’t an accident. And sometimes the truth is far more terrifying than the unknown.
Review:
"A Stranger Within" is a gripping psychological thriller that hooks you from the first page. When a young woman wakes up with no memory of who she is, Detective Caleb Reed—haunted by his own brother’s decades-old disappearance—takes it upon himself to help her uncover the truth. The mystery surrounding her identity is suspenseful and emotionally charged, especially as small flashes of memory hint at something far darker. Caleb’s backstory adds depth and heart to the investigation, making this more than just a missing-person case—it’s about guilt, closure, and second chances. The romance develops quickly, but the emotional tension keeps the pages turning. A compelling, character-driven thriller with twists and strong psychological undertones. Perfect for fans of amnesia mysteries and emotional suspense.
