Paul Barrell

Writer

and former footballer

Paul started writing in 2007. The trigger was a visit, to a remote farmhouse while on a family holiday in the S.W. France . One of the rooms had been converted into a library that contained a diverse selection of both French and English literature and over the next two weeks inspiration took hold and he began to write. His early literary efforts were sent to a copy writer at Channel 4 who rashly said his work although rough and ready, showed promise. His comments spurred Paul on. Since then he has written three contemporary stand alone novels, a Ghost story titled 18, and, he has just started work on a much darker novel, 'The Bleed ' set in the drug world of South London. He writes about people, places, and relationships. that have shaped his life . The underlying themes are a sense of mystery and the idea that our past and present are all inexplicably linked by invisible threads.

Paul was born in Lambeth in 1961 and spent his formative years growing up in South London. In 1971 his parents moved to Surrey where he attended Ewell Castle School for Boys. Here he excelled at sport, especially tennis, cross country and football. At 15 he was given trials at Chelsea , joined the youth team and played against Fulham . He left school after A levels, having taken all his exams a year early.

He was a party child of the 1980's and spent the next three years living in various flats in Chelsea and Pimlico. A chance meeting with a windsurfing instructor in Italy pointed him in the direction of food and drink , and a degree in Hotel Management increasing his knowledge in fine wines and gastronomy.Embracing the New Romantic lifestyle he partied the early eighties away at the Blitz and with Ricky Gervais in Camden.

When his parents divorced in 1984 he saw this as the perfect opportunity to fulfil his desire to travel overseas. He wanted more. He ended up in Australia running the Bay Garden Restaurant on Magnetic Island, a stones throw from the Great Barrier Reef. After a run in with immigration, he returned to the UK in the late eighties and decided that the boss/ employee relationship were not for him. He wanted to be an entrepreneur.

He gained qualifications in wine and led the way , by being one of first companies to import and distribute Organic Wines in the UK .Epicurean his upmarket wine company dealt with many high profile clients in London and he ran this successfully until 2005 while also owning a restaurant in Surrey.

His true passion for storytelling evolved alongside his business career. He always felt that telling a story enhanced the whole sales process. His favourite saying is :
'I used to open wine but now I open doors.'
He currently runs a wine blog and a premium fresh food company "lake2plate "in the Surrey Hills.

He is married with two children and lives in Surrey with his wife and rescue dog Lottie. He has always pursued his dreams and over the last forty years has skied most of the more challenging mountains in Europe. He still enjoys sport in his fifties and plays five a side football and tennis. He has been an ardent Chelsea fan and follows his team home and away when time permits.

The Girl In The White Dress is his third novel, and portray's adeptly his skills as an Indie writer. He has never been on a creative writing course and is self taught, although 10,000 hours practice should make you somewhat of an expert.

I went into The Bleed expecting a solid British crime thriller. What I didn’t expect was to be pulled into something so atmospheric, so psychologically charged, and so emotionally unsettling that I found myself thinking about it long after I closed the final page.
Paul Barrell doesn’t just write crime fiction, he writes immersion. From the opening chapters, South London feels less like a setting and more like a living, breathing organism. It pulses with tension. It watches. It waits. The underworld he constructs isn’t glamorized or exaggerated for spectacle; it’s raw, cold, and disturbingly believable. There’s grit here not the cinematic kind, but the kind that stains.
Marc Madison is easily one of the most compelling protagonists I’ve encountered in recent crime fiction. He isn’t polished. He isn’t heroic in the traditional sense. He’s flawed, impulsive, wounded and that’s precisely what makes him magnetic. His addictive tendencies, his internal conflicts, and the emotional weight he carries from his past make him feel startlingly real. You don’t simply follow Marc through the story you inhabit his chaos. You feel his paranoia. You question his choices. And at times, you fear for his soul as much as his life.
What elevates The Bleed beyond a conventional undercover crime story is its supernatural undertone. It’s subtle but deeply effective. The near-death experience is not used as a gimmick, it’s a turning point that shifts the psychological landscape of the narrative. The line “Marc Madison is a ghost and you can’t kill a ghost” lingers like a quiet threat throughout the novel. There’s an eerie undercurrent that hums beneath the violence and drug empires, adding depth without overwhelming the realism.
The pacing is masterful. Barrell knows exactly when to tighten the screws and when to let the tension simmer. The infiltration of the OCG and the maneuvering around the Duke of York build with controlled intensity. The stakes rise naturally, not artificially. Every decision Marc makes feels consequential. Every alliance feels fragile.
And then there’s Eva.
Her introduction adds both vulnerability and danger to the narrative. She isn’t just a romantic subplot she’s a catalyst. Their dynamic feels volatile in the best possible way, like two damaged forces colliding in a world that doesn’t forgive weakness. Through her, we see another side of Marc — one that desperately wants connection but knows the cost of it.
Emotionally, the story hits harder than I anticipated. Beneath the crime and violence lies a deeply personal thread about grief, brotherhood, and unresolved trauma. The mystery surrounding his twin brother’s death adds a layer of poignancy that anchors the entire plot. It gives the brutality context. It gives the vengeance weight.
What impressed me most, however, was the tone. The writing is confident without being indulgent. The dialogue feels authentic. The tension never feels forced. Barrell understands the rhythm of the genre but isn’t confined by it. He pushes it slightly enough to feel fresh.
In a market saturated with crime thrillers, The Bleed stands apart because it has emotional teeth. It doesn’t just entertain; it unsettles. It lingers. It challenges the reader to sit with the moral ambiguity of a man walking a razor’s edge between justice and self-destruction.
If you appreciate gritty British crime with psychological depth and a haunting twist, this is a novel that demands your attention. It’s sharp, relentless, and unexpectedly moving.
Paul Barrell has crafted more than a thriller here, he’s created a character-driven descent into darkness that refuses to let go.
And honestly? I’m still not sure whether Marc Madison survived the story… or simply became the ghost he was always meant to be.

Wow. The Bleed is gritty, gripping, and completely unrelenting from start to finish. Paul Barrell pulls no punches in this explosive British crime thriller, and I couldn’t put it down. Set in the raw, electric streets of South London, the story follows Marc Madison one of the most fascinating and conflicted characters I’ve read in a long time. He’s a brilliant mix of chaos and charm: a man battling his own demons while trying to take down a drug empire from the inside.

What hooked me wasn’t just the action (though there's plenty of it), but how real and human Marc feels. He’s not your typical hero, he’s flawed, battling addiction, and still reeling from a painful past, but that’s exactly what makes his journey so powerful. When the supernatural twist comes in, it’s subtle but adds this eerie layer that made everything feel even more intense and personal.

The pacing is relentless, and Barrell’s writing doesn’t waste a word. Every chapter ramps up the tension, especially when Eva Chan enters the scene. Their chemistry is electric, and the Bonnie-and-Clyde dynamic between them adds both danger and heart to the story. You never really know who to trust, and the stakes keep getting higher as Marc digs deeper into both the criminal underworld and the mystery of his brother’s murder.

This isn’t just another crime novel. it’s raw, stylish, and full of soul. If you're into gritty, character-driven thrillers with a touch of the supernatural and loads of London flavor, this one’s a must-read.

5/5 – Intense, emotional, and seriously addictive. Paul Barrell has created a standout crime series that deserves all the hype.

Paul Barrell’s The Bleed is a ferocious, adrenaline-charged dive into the dark arteries of South London’s criminal underworld and I absolutely devoured it.

From the very first page, Marc Madison leaps off the paper. He’s complex and messy in all the right ways: a weed-smoking, hangover-prone rogue with a dry wit, but also a deeply committed undercover cop. I found myself rooting for him even when I wasn’t sure if I should. His moral compass isn’t exactly broken, but it’s definitely spinning especially once the supernatural thread kicks in.

The blend of gritty realism and something eerily unexplainable is what sets The Bleed apart. The moment Marc is brought back from the edge of death, you feel the tone shift and it works. The flashbacks to his childhood, the mystery around his twin brother’s death, and his strange connection to Eva Chan create a brooding atmosphere that kept me turning pages late into the night.

Eva, by the way, is no damsel. Her role in the story entangled with the very gang Marc is trying to take down adds tension and emotional depth. Their dynamic has that “Bonnie and Clyde” energy, but with real emotional weight behind it.

Barrell writes action with brutal precision, and the London he paints is unglamorous, raw, and real. If you liked Top Boy or Gangs of London, this will hit the same gritty nerve but there’s more heart here than you might expect.

Without spoiling anything: the ending rattled me. Twists I didn’t see coming, choices that hurt, and a final reveal that ties the supernatural elements in with a devastating punch.

Highly recommended if you’re into British crime with an edge, a pulse, and a soul.

Based on a true story as told to the author, set in London in 2018. The book opens with a short prologue where Met cop Marc Madison has a heart attack. Madison works undercover, and is currently tasked with bringing the drug king of South London down. Marc gets a job with a cleaning and maintenance company in the area. The company employs an eclectic mix of characters, one of whom, Christian is involved with the gang, and who unknowingly helps Marc gain an in to the crime gang.

Briefly, a chance meeting with Eva Chan, a masseuse, leads him to meet the gang leaders and his plan is evolving. As more and more terrible and merciless murders take place it becomes an attritional battle to see who is still alive at the end of the day!

Madison is a great, but flawed character, and it’s that that makes him such a good undercover operative. In addition to his job there is his ongoing search to find who killed his twin brother to take his revenge, which adds a further dimension to the story. A fast paced, gritty and exciting gangland thriller with good twists and turns and an unexpected small paranormal element. Good read.

Gritty, drags you in, dark, fast paced, pulls no punches, twisty

So many great words for this page turning thrilling read.
Full of suspense and drama this book grips you from page one right to the last page.

A new author to me but I will certainly be looking out for more.
I suppose if I said the book is about a man trying to solve the mystery around his brothers murder, you might think it’s a gently murder mystery but you’d be wrong it’s much more, delving deeper into the criminal underworld.

Thank you @randomthingstours and @paulbarrell11 for having me on the tour and for a copy of the ebook

"The Bleed" grabbed me from the first page and didn’t let go. Marc Madison is one of those rare characters—you know he’s flawed, maybe even dangerous, but you can’t help rooting for him. The writing is tight and smart, the pace is full throttle, and just when you think it’s a straight-up crime thriller, the supernatural element creeps in and gives it this eerie, unforgettable edge. It’s like Line of Duty met The Sixth Sense in a dark alley—and I loved every second of it. Absolutely unputdownable.

Paul Barrell really outdid himself with The Bleed. From the first chapter, you're thrown headfirst into the gritty chaos of South London’s underworld, and it’s impossible to look away. Marc and Eva’s chemistry is electric—dangerous, messy, and completely addictive. The atmosphere is so vivid, it honestly gave me Top Boy vibes, but with even more emotional depth. And when Marc’s past starts to unravel in the second half… wow. It hit hard. This book is sharp, intense, and seriously gripping. I couldn’t get enough.

This book is like an adrenaline shot straight to the chest. The pace is full throttle from start to finish, but what really makes it stand out is how grounded and gritty it feels—like you're right there in the middle of it all. Paul Barrell is a master at building tension and throwing in just enough twists to keep you on edge. It’s got that Top Boy vibe, but the supernatural element gives it a fresh, unexpected spin. What I loved about The Bleed is that it doesn’t play it safe. Most crime thrillers stick to the usual formula, but this one takes bold risks—and they really pay off. The supernatural twist isn’t just thrown in for shock value; it’s deeply tied to Marc’s emotional journey and adds a whole new layer of intrigue. Imagine Luther with a dark, ghostly edge. It’s intense, emotional, and absolutely gripping.

This is definitely one of those books that had me questioning my reading choices!

I never, well pretty rarely read books of this genre!

I have no clue why exactly as I absolutely love to watch TV dramas that are exactly this!

So, I often like to stretch my reading and grab a genre that I don't read much and this was the pick of the month and I absolutely loved it!

This gripped me right from the first page and had me completely hooked in to the last.

I loved the whole premise of this storyline and was totally on edge the further we follow Marc into the depths of the gang world.

Straddling that line between what's needed to get the job done as an undercover cop and his personal mission to find out who is to blame for his brother's murder - we see Marc heading to a place he may not return from.

Marc was a great character to explore and it was fascinating to watch him navigate this journey into more and more precarious and tense situations.

The writing style sucks you in from the start and the fast pace just doesn't slow up - I honestly couldn't put this down!

I was definitely questioning why I don't read more of this genre by the end.

A great first read for me by this author - can't wait to read more in the future.
