OK fine, this is the kind of monster romance that made me less of a Scrooge.
This is a quick, festive, sapphic monster-adjacent romance that’s equal parts cozy, spicy, and also has some emotional depth and imperfect characters. Missy Claus, stepping into a role shaped by her grief and her father's legacy, immediately felt more layered than I expected for a novella. Nicole, meanwhile, is very much in her burnt-out, emotionally exhausted era, and I appreciated how prickly and closed-off she was allowed to be.
Even with the limited page count, both women felt like real people carrying real baggage. The first half is a little heavier on setup and holiday vibes than I personally preferred, but once the story shifts and the emotional conversations deepen, everything clicked. I especially loved the latter half.
I did go in expecting something a bit more overtly monstrous and a bit less sweet-and-sparkly, so that adjustment took a minute. The warmth managed to win me over. The chemistry is there, the attraction feels earned, and the spice absolutely does not disappoint. For a story that largely unfolds over a very short span of time, the connection still felt believable, which is no small feat.
Beka Westrup continues to be fantastic at writing characters with depth even when they’re saving Christmas.
