After twenty years as a dedicated curator, Grace feels numb when the museum she dedicated her life to closes its doors. Severance check in hand, she decides to run away from her empty life… and then just keeps running. Yet instead of escaping her past, she stumbles headfirst into her destiny. When her dream job practically falls in her lap (soon followed by her dream man) Grace’s dreary world is turned into a fantasy life worthy of fairytale status. Jetting all over the world as a travel writer, a handsome young man always there to pick her up in Atlanta when she returns home, Grace and Rowan are happily living a blessed, beautiful life. The sudden trip to Tokyo, although unexpected, is just another day at the office… seemingly. Two days after touching down in that highly-populated island country, the outwardly happy woman with the broad smile disappears without a trace. This book is her story. A compilation of journal entries, secret diaries, and hidden kanji scrolls are woven together to tell her tale. A tale laced with pain, sprinkled with fear, marinated in acceptance and change, and then filled to bursting with life and love. Yes, this is the story of Grace… may she never be forgotten.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I absolutely loved this book. I’m standing up and shouting it from the rooftops. Loved, loved, loved it!!! I was captivated from the very beginning, but I was also very scared because of the synopsis and knowing that she disappears.
I fell in love with all the characters of the book. I found Grace to be such a strong woman. I greatly admired her free spirit and willingness to experience different cultures all on her own. Rowan captured my heart with his stalker tendencies. He was relentless in his pursuit of Grace. I was so happy with the way their lives were turning out. I just knew my heart was going to break. At about 25%, I started to dread reading more.
Then the unthinkable happened. Grace was kidnapped in Tokyo, kept and abused by a far reaching organization, trained to be the perfect Japanese wife. Luckily, Grace is a very strong woman and was able to flee injured to a temple in the mountains. There she was able to heal both physically and mentally. I loved all the monks. I loved that Grace, Soon-shy, would chatter to them all day long even though they spoke different languages. I especially loved Shiki, the “Temple Guardian”. I was so torn between wanting Grace to reconnect with Rowan and wanting Soon-shy to have a relationship with Shiki. I cried ugly tears while reading about Soon-shy’s time at the temple, ugly, ugly tears.
I loved when we switched from Grace’s writings to Shiki’s writings. I really loved their story in both points of view. The epilogue left me with a smile on my face. I loved reading how Shiki and Soon-shy's love story ended.
