In the aftermath of the Battle of the Classes, Piggy hopes for a little respite, but he’s in for a disappointment. Tsukijima, Piggy’s hotheaded classmate and former player of Dungeon Explorer Chronicle, finds it insufferable when the many bullies of Adventurers’ High once again target the lowly students of Class E.

Piggy goes into panic mode when Tsukijima’s violent retribution leads to a duel between Tsukijima and Ashikaga, a powerful student and member of the nobility. If Tsukijima exploits his game knowledge to easily win this clash, it could have significant consequences. Everything could spiral out of control if this world isn’t steered in the path of the game’s good ending.

Now that he deeply cares for Piggy’s family and Kaoru (his childhood friend), the player inhabiting his body must also use his “cheats” to keep Tsukijima in check before it’s too late.

Continuing from the battle of the classes, the latest volume once again proves Piggy’s hope at peace elusive. With the student elections underway, the power plays between all sides allow for the first player character, Tsukijima, to make a move. As he challenges a potential presidential candidate to a duel, Piggy must make tough decisions to save the game world’s known future.

The plot of the fifth volume acts as a means to an end, as it intends to prepare Piggy and the world of DEC for an upcoming change. These changes begin with the volume’s opening conflict, where an internal struggle for Piggy causes his beliefs to clash constantly. He says he no longer thinks of this world as a game but still thinks in terms of DEC’s characters and their futures without regard for their agency. By this volume, Piggy’s reliance on game knowledge and the need to keep in the shadows are starting to cloud his judgement on better solutions than the status quo. The main plot, a duel between Tsukijima and Ashikaga, aims to address this.

Tsukijima is a player on the total opposite end of the spectrum to Piggy. A man of action, he’s been fed up with the tyrannical status quo imposed on Class E by the nobility for some time now and is ready to stop this regardless of the chaos it may bring. While his actions may seem noble, riling up those in power will have serious consequences for the future scenario, especially for the members of Class E willing to follow him.

What might put Tsukijima on Piggy’s radar quickly turns to a need for action when, as the volume progresses, it’s discovered that his intent is less than altruistic. The idea of swapping one tyrant for another is what ultimately forces Piggy to choose whether to stay in the shadows is the correct decision anymore.

Eventually, choosing to forgo the shadows, the volume’s climax sees the protagonist enter the fray. Revealing his special abilities and proving he’s no mere weakling, he muddies the future and changes his relationship with those around him. With new eyes on him, his actions will require more thought in later volumes. Moreover, his direct approach has caught the eye of Kaoru, whose icy reception has begun to thaw.

Overall, Finding Avalon’s fifth instalment is a continuation of the strong writing and action seen in its previous volumes. There are strong themes of conflict throughout the volume, and with change on the horizon, there’s hope for the future evolution of the series.
