I didn’t expect to fall for a Scottish footballer so annoyingly sunny you need shades to be around him.
I didn’t expect to say yes to his heart-felt, if loopy, proposal while he lay injured on the pitch, blathering on about banana pudding and sparkly unicorns.
What I definitely didn’t expect?
For our engagement to explode into a paparazzi circus, our mothers to turn into wedding bulldozers, and for our wedding protector's perfectly reasonable elopement plan to spiral into a road trip escape.
So here we are.
In Love You, Maine, a town that celebrates Valentine’s Day every single day. We’re here to get married. Quietly. No drama. In disguise.
Although good luck hiding a 6’4” ginger Scottish striker wearing a knee brace and a perpetual extrovert smile.
Instead of being subtle and blending in? Our quiet escape is vibrating heart-shaped beds, mirrors on the ceilings, secret identities, interfering mothers, and one suspiciously enthusiastic moose that humps dumpsters.
This was supposed to be a simple wedding. Just me and Hamish. No fuss.
But nothing about us has ever been simple with us.
Still, this is what love is, right? It’s chaos. It’s compromise. It’s crying in a wedding planner’s office, then kissing in a hot spring.
It’s choosing each other again and again, even when everything goes sideways.
No matter what comes next... this is our comeback story, in more ways than one.
And no - that’s not a euphemism. :)
Shopping for a Highlander’s Elopement is a romantic comedy that blends the worlds of four bestselling series by New York Times bestselling romantic comedy author Julia
- Shopping for a Billionaire
- Shopping for a Highlander
- Whatever It Takes
- Love You, Maine
If you love sports romance, surprise proposals, grand gestures, chaotic weddings, Scottish footballers, golden retriever/black cat energy, and characters who love too hard, mess up spectacularly, and always find their way back to each other with plenty of laugh-out-loud moments (and lovingly-used scrunchies) along the way, then this is your book.
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Julia Kent writes romantic comedy with an edge. Since 2013, she has sold more than 2 million books, with 5 New York Times bestsellers and more than 21 appearances on the USA Today bestseller list. Her books have been translated into French, German, and Italian, with more titles releasing in the future.
From billionaires to BBWs to new adult rock stars, Julia finds a sensual, goofy joy in every contemporary romance she writes. Unlike Shannon from Shopping for a Billionaire, she did not meet her husband after dropping her phone in a men's room toilet (and he isn't a billionaire in a rom com).
She also writes romantic suspense as Meli Raine, sexy shifter romances as DJ Jennings, billionaire shifters as half of the author team Diana Seere, and co-authors with Elisa Reed.
She lives in New England with her husband and three children in a household where she is the only person with the gene required to change empty toilet paper rolls.
I wasn’t sure if I was going to get an early copy of this, but I did, and I did a little dance when it showed up in my email inbox! I adore these characters, this whole series really, and the fact that we get other characters from other series that I love by this author made it that much better! And of course my love of all things Scottish/Outlander, and I was texting my sister who lived in Scotland to ask about all the words and meanings as they talked about, such as chuff, because of the dog named Chuffy. And of course the fact that Hamish is from Glasgow, where my sister now lives with her Glaswegian boyfriend made it fun to read and ask her about things they said.
So this isn’t our first foray into Hamish and Amy’s romance/relationship. Which could be obvious from the title having the word elopement in it. We know these two are in love. But the things they are put through in this story from deciding to get married puts a huge strain on them. First is the disaster that is Hamish’s proposal at his exhibition game. Then there is the craziness that surrounds both the mother of the bride and the mother of the groom who each have exactly how and where they want the wedding all planned out, and there’s no way to combine it seeing as how the wheres are in two different countries. As mentioned in the blurb, there are cameos from other series by this authors. Series I’ve read all the books in, and series I still have a few to get through. But I knew the people and it was fun getting back into those worlds. I love when authors cross over in their worlds like this!
I also love how even when things get rough and there are events or things people say that could totally come between Hamish and Amy, nothing changes their minds about wanting to be together. The drama doesn’t cause a riff between them. Most of the drama in this is hilarious in its own right, even when it is so frustrating to see the wedding plans just being hijacked and ruined left and right. But the love these two have for each other is exactly what they both need and neither will give it up, and neither will let the other not know exactly how they feel.
Now, because they are together already for the story, the amount of steam in this story is WAY up there. The only thing keeping it from a full 5 on that aspect for me was there wasn’t anything too crazy in what they did. But there is a lot of sex. And it is pretty much all on the page, no fading away, no closed doors.
And finally I just want to say that Hamish is one of my top book boyfriends. Yes, the fact that he’s Scottish plays into it, but more than that it is his sense of humor, his happiness, those are the things that I want in a significant other. There are a few bits in the story that make me think of some other romances I’ve read recently. One thing, the scrunchie, and a recent Helena Hunting story. I can’t remember the other part right now? But I adored this one. I’m so glad I got the opportunity to read it. All I need now is time to go back and fill in all the stories in the other series that I’ve missed to fill in all I need to know about these characters.
In this, the third of a loose series, Kent brings together three of her series, to slightly hysterical but very funny effect.
As with all of Kent’s romances, this is a balance of warm and funny, romantic and erotic, and light-hearted and serious. That balance is one of the things I’ve enjoyed most about Kent’s books over the years, and it’s impressive that she’s still getting it right.
It's the humor that draws me predominantly to Kent’s books. It’s always there (at least in her romances), and it’s well judged. Which is to say, it’s good natured and while often character based, does not make fun of anyone in an unkind way. It also tends to rely on heightened situations, which are vivid and funny, and just relatable enough to keep them believable.
Characters are believable, and their relationships are too. Yes, once or twice Kent tested the limits of plausibility (notably, for me, when a character managed to peel off a soaking wet sports bra without a struggle!) but it’s mostly so easy to go along with the story.
Basically, this is an enjoyable romance which delivers exactly what you might hope for: a believable relationship, a lot of fun, and a happy ending.
May I make a suggestion before you start reading this absolutely amazing book? Well maybe more than one…First: Make sure you have a zillion tissues handy—you’ll definitely need them. Second: make sure you empty your bladder before starting. You’ll be laughing out loud so long and hard that leakage is guaranteed! And Three: Have something to drink on hand. Laughing and crying requires fluid replacement. Now that you’re ready to dive into this amazing book…let’s get started!
Julia Kent gifts us with another incredible read. Live been s reader since the very beginning and am simply amazed at how prolific she is. She makes us laugh; she makes us cry; she help us face all the hard stuff in life; and she always leaves us with hope and a healthy dose of love—no matter when or where it happens.
This book’s storyline is pure genius…life, poetry, and AI all rolled up into a kick a$$ book! The characters…OHMIGOD! Even though we’ve met most of them before, we’ve never been on a ride like this. The plot twists and turns will have you laughing and crying while being on the craziest plan to elope ever. The whole book takes you on this twisty winding journey to Hamish and Amy’s wedding—what better HEA could you ask for??
I can’t encourage you enough to grab this book for your TBR list today. You definitely don’t want to miss this one! (I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book and absolutely loved it to the moon and back!) ❤️❤️❤️
3.5 stars Full disclosure: I haven't read any of the previous books in this series or the related ones. However, I was able to enjoy this book without feeling like I was missing anything critical. It's a good book for when you want something lighter and humourous; however, it had some serious, emotional moments that felt real too. On a surface level, this was a fun read.
However, at times, the quirky descriptions, similes and metaphors were overused and this overabundance detracted from their humour. Some of the scenarios felt like set pieces that existed mainly for comedic value; while funny, they slowed down the progression of the story. This was more of a characters driven book than a plot driven one.
I was frustrated that Hamish, who apparently was a bit of a player in previous books, seemed oblivious to women who came on to him in front of Amy and did nothing when it happened. I found this disrespectful to Amy, especially since Hamish seemed to make light of the situation when made aware that Amy didn't like it. Maybe someone should've hit on Amy so Hamish could see how he felt?
I also wondered to what extent Hamish supported his family-- on one hand, I understand the sense of obligation to help; on the other, all or most of his siblings are adults. Someone needs to tell him that they are not his responsibility.
I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

*4 stars* It was my first read by the author and definitely enjoyed reading this story. It's a part of a series but you can read it as a standalone. I loved the chemistry between Hamish & Amy a lot; as they were trying to gear up to have a wedding, the side characters (especially the mom's) were a lot to handle. All of the characters had their unique personality; made me tear up from laughter at times. It was a great enjoyable lovable read that when you were at the end of the book, you definitely wanted it to last longer :-)
Hamish & Amy have been dating for a long time now and they are very much in love but as Hamish's a very well known football player, they have to deal with a lot of press and outside noise. When Hamish gets injured, they are trying to figure out what happens next but they definitely have a strong relationship to deal with everything that comes their way. A lot is happening around them now that they are engaged and both their mom's seem to be hands on with the wedding planning; both are finding it hard to deal with as it seems they are pulled every kind of direction. While figuring things out, they elope to an island that's filled with love but will it be enough to have the wedding of their dreams in the end?...
WOW, WOW, WOW. 10* If I could That was exceptional, and that's saying something for Julia Kent, who's writing i adore Shopping for a Highlander’s Elopement is the third book in the Shopping for a Highlander series, spin off from Shopping for a Billionaire series, and also includes major cross overs to two other series and mentions of others. This is a whirlwind of love, passion, and intense joy, plus a couple of motherzillas. Strap yourself in this is going to get bumpy (in more way than one). Hamish and Amy are the perfect couple. They except each other for exactly who they are. Despite everything that tries to get in their way. This story captured my heart. I love these characters and their attachment to each other. Not just Hamish and Amy, but all the other players that pop up. This story includes so much history and supporting detail that no questions are left unanswered, and this story could be read as a standalone. But once you start you will find all the other books that complement it. I'm not going to go into and storylines, I don't want to spoil anything. Just be prepared to laugh, cry and wet your pants (in a good way). Please read this book. I could not recommend it any more highly.
Shopping for a Highlander's Enlopment (Shopping for a Highlander #3) by Julia Kent
Julia Kent has done it again—another brilliant installment in her hilarious and heartwarming world! Shopping for a Highlander's Enlopment is packed with laugh-out-loud moments, touching scenes, and the kind of chaotic wedding prep that only the Jacoby and McCormick families can deliver. Yes, it’s time for another Jacoby-McCormick wedding, and this time, it’s Amy and Hamish’s turn to tie the knot.
Of course, both mothers are hilariously meddling, trying to take over the big day, and that just adds to the delightful mayhem. The chemistry between Amy and Hamish is off the charts, and the supporting characters feel like old friends brought to life through Julia Kent’s vivid, witty writing.
Julia is one of my top five authors for a reason. I first discovered her through another of her series (Gerald’s story—I believe that was book 10), and after that, I just had to go back and read them all. Her Shopping series is consistently brilliant, and this latest book does not disappoint. If you love romantic comedy with heart, heat, and humor, I highly recommend this one!
As an avid fangirl of Julia Kent and an even bigger fangirl of the Shopping series, you can bet that I was beyond excited to get my hands on the newest story set in this series!
This is the continuing story of Hamish and Amy, but know that this story can also be read as a stand-alone. Ms. Kent has the talent to bring new readers in, and this story is going to grab you and not let you go until the end.
Full of heart, heat and hilarity, this story follows Hamish and Amy on their journey to wedded bliss. But as long-time fans know, when it comes to the Jacoby family, nothing ever comes easy and not without a bit of chaos.
I found myself laughing out loud when I was reading this and I was cheering hard for Amy and Hamish to get the wedding that they wanted.
I loved how Ms. Kent brought in a touch of several of her series into this story, it was like a long-awaited family reunion with the secondary characters and places made themselves known.
I hope that with the ending, Ms. Kent is getting ready to dazzle us with more from the McCormick and Jacoby familes in the future.
I started reading this book on the sofa next to my teenager. She wanted to shoo me out of the room halfway down the first page, because my chortles kept her from enjoying her K-Pop videos. It was great fun, I laughed out loud several times, but also needed tissues. This novel has it all: banter, jokes, crazy mom-zillas, romantic moments, reflective moments, and spice.
Hamish has a ring and a plan. Amy says yes. And life has lemons, in the form of Marie and Fiona. Beware of the two mothers who have their own ideas how the big event should go down and boy do those ideas clash. Neither wants to throw in the towel, which forces Amy and Hamish to plan their elopement. Will they escape to Vegas like Shannon and Declan? Or does Wedding Protectors have a different destination up their sleeve? Yes, you read that right, the whole team from Wedding Protectors gets a cameo, so do some other characters of Julia Kent's.
Hamish and Amy are getting married! Hamish has a career changing accident and his engagement show goes down the tube, he proposes to Amy in the sweetest way. However, when the two momzilla from hell try to take over the wedding without any remorse, the whole thing shift and they end up in Luview Maine. You will be entertained by the characters of Luview that we all know and love, Wedding protector is on the case and our favorite pastor are all part of the cast. The question is will Code Fiona or Code Chuckles be the one dictating the wedding? Absolutely hilarous, sweet and sexy. The love Hamish and Amy for each other, is what makes it so interesting, deep and for a lifetime. If I could give this story more stars I would. It is the perfect distraction in a world in total chaos. Thank you Julia Kent
From the very start, I have to say that I would be eloping so fast that the maternal monsters wouldn't see me for dust. Lucky for these thwarted wedding dictators, Hamish and Amy are much kinder, long suffering, and loyal than me!! This book has a very large cast list with whom I am already familiar, so I anticipated shenanigans, insanity, confusion, and happy ever afters! I was not disappointed, though I did feel that our heroes needed to be more truthful about their own wants at times 😁. I loved their choice of wedding destination as this crazy town is another of my favourite of Julia Kent's creations. There is so much fun to be had in this book and it's hard to pick out any one in particular, but I must say the hot springs, inflatables and an amorous moose, is stand out. Another fun filled, gleefully crazy book by the irrepressible Julua Jent. 💖💖💖💖
I can always count on Julia Kent to deliver a story that makes me laugh out loud—and this book did not disappoint! I absolutely loved reading about Hamish and Amy’s elopement. From their two hilarious, over-the-top mothers to their priceless reactions to Love You Maine, this story is a must-read.
As someone who has read all of Julia’s books, I can honestly say this one ranks near the top of my favorites. One of the things I enjoyed most was seeing familiar characters from her other books make appearances—it felt like revisiting old friends.
If you’re new to the series, I highly recommend reading the earlier books first to fully appreciate Amy and Hamish’s journey. But whether you’re a longtime fan or diving in for the first time, you’re in for a funny, heartwarming ride.
I can't remember when I have ever laughed so much reading a book and that's saying something because Julia Kent ALWAYS makes me laugh. If a book can be described as an emotionally uplifting story with a laugh track, this one is it. With an amazing confluence of several of her series, Julia brings a pair of meddling mothers to their knees while still bringing forth an emotional connection of souls. Having just returned from Scotland, this story also brought me back to the people I met with a wicked, dry sense of humor and the beautiful scenery that took my breath away (including a few Gods Gifts lol). Join us as we TRY to celebrate Hamish and Amy amidst all the craziness that Julia Kent is singularity known for, ye ken?
This book was the cross-over to end all cross-overs; drawing in characters and plot points from so many of the authors different series. Mind you, it’s not surprising that it took something just a little over the top to pull off this latest version of a McCormick-Jacoby wedding. This story made me laugh so hard. It also came really close to making me cry a whole bunch of times, too. Amy and Hamish’s struggles with their momzillas and just the general wedding chaos hid some treacherous emotional undercurrents and dangerous universal truths. I had so much fun with this book, and I hate that it’s over already. I need more! And I'm positively bereft to know how close we are to the end of the Shopping universe.
(4.5 rounded to 5⭐️ when necessary) SHOPPING FOR A HIGHLANDER’S ELOPEMENT is the most recent addition to the SHOPPING FOR A BILLIONAIRE universe by Julia Kent. It is the third book in the SHOPPING FOR A HIGHLANDER part of the series. This is an uproariously funny romantic comedy about the youngest Jacoby sister, Amy, and the McCormick brother’s Scottish football playing cousin, Hamish. In this book, Amy and Hamish had been dating for two years and experienced all out craziness on their trip to the alter. Just like Amy’s sister Shannon- who shopped for the original billionaire, as the title suggests Amy and Hamish resorted to elopement to escape the crazy wedding machinations of both of their mothers. The author pulled the Wedding Protectors from the WHATEVER IT TAKES series and the town from the LOVE YOU, MAINE series to help Amy and Hamish say “I do.” I laughed hard enough to cry multiple times while reading this book. I highly recommend this book, especially if you are a reader in need of a pick-me-up. This author has an incredibly talented imagination for the ridiculous and the writing skills to take that imagination and write romcom gold. I never thought anyone would out the Momzilla of the Bride, Marie Jacoby, but Hamish’s mother was excellent competition as Momzilla of the Groom! I cannot say more, other than to urge all readers who enjoy a hilarious, contemporary romantic comedy to pick up a copy of this book as soon as they can. I read all of the books leading up to this one and think that you would, at minimum, want to read those specifically related to the Shopping For A Highlander series to truly appreciate this story, but it might be possible to read it on its’ own and still enjoy it.
I received a free ARC of this novel via the author and I am voluntarily leaving this honest review.
Hamish’s unorthodox proposal to Amy after being injured on the field and the media frenzy that ensued should have been a sign that planning the wedding wasn’t going to be any easier.
Not only are they dealing with the publicity that has taken over their lives, but their mothers are determined that the wedding will be the extravaganza that they want which isn’t necessarily the wedding their children want. Heading to Maine to elope was supposed to allow them to avoid the chaos however the fun is only beginning.
Hamish and Amy take us on quite the ride filled with humor that will have you laughing out loud, a romance that is enchanting and so many surprises. It was wonderful not only to spend time with this couple but all the other characters we have grown to know and love
This is the third book in this amazing series, and this is Hamish and Amy’s story. Hamish is a Scottish footballer, and while lying injured and loopy on the pitch, he proposes to Amy, which turns their engagement in a paparazzi circus. When their mother’s turn their pending wedding into chaos, Hamish, and Amy, take matters into their own hands. This is a well written easy to read, hilarious story, with family, friendships, emotions, meddling mothers, chaos, humor, witty banter, surprises, secret identities, and love, which leads to an entertaining, fun, and hilarious addictive page turner. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.
This is book 3 in this series, and it also overlaps with other Julia Kent series. I have read and enjoyed a number of her books, but not the earlier ones in this series. So, I can confirm that it can be read standalone… but I will be going back to read the earlier books so I can enjoy the full impact of Hamish & Amy and their journey!
OMG… this book is laugh out loud funny, it is witty, cheeky, outrageous and steamy. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, the humour, the messages and the simply joy that reading provides. This book has made me eager for more, and I can’t wait to revisit “Luview, Maine” as well.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
This book was so much fun to read! I loved how it blended so many of Julia's series into one sweet, funny, and entertaining story.
Hamish and Amy are all in. They love each other so much and just want to get married away from all the craziness of their families and the paparazzi. But, of course, their elopement doesn't go as planned. I loved getting this next installment in their story as they move on to the marriage phase of their HEA.
If you are looking for a story that will make you laugh, smile, and swoon this is it. I already can't wait for the next book in the series!
Thank you to the author for providing an ARC for an honest review.
When fate intervenes on his carefully made plans, Hamish must deal with a new outlook. Amy knew something was brewing because of her and his families not-so-subtle way of doing things. But an unforseen tragic move sets them on a new path.
The antics of mothers and the pressure to heal send them to the one place they need to escape the madness.
The story is hilarious and enlightening as well as sweet and heartfelt. Bonus- you get crossovers from two other beloved series's! It is a rip-roaring fun trip that you come to expect from the Jacoby family and learn to love with the McCormicks
OMG! The laughter never ends and the heart wants, what the heart wants. There is so much to love about this story and you can close your eyes and just point to a random page to get more hilarious moments. Only Julia Kent could think up a match for Marie Jacoby. And I must say, I feel for Amy and Hamish, as they are blessed with both Fiona and Marie. Loved, loved, loved this book and all my favorites are included along with my favorite town Love You, Maine. Grab this newest book, which can br read as a standalone, but I guarantee you will go for the whole series, once you start.
Once again Julia Kent has left me laughing out loud - repeatedly- over the crazy antics of these wonderful characters. Whenever I hear there’s a new book coming out, I preorder, and I have yet to be disappointed - other than having to wait for the next book in the series. There’s nothing quite like the Jacoby and McCormick parents (particularly the moms), with the added joy of finding ourselves in Luview, Maine where there’s a Randy sighting. Looking forward to more in the Highlander’s series.
Shopping for a Highlanders Elopement is book 3 of Shopping for a Highlander series written by Julia Kent. Get ready for some LOL fun with Hamish and Amy as they try to plan their wedding without their Moms taking over! They travel to Love You Maine and get busy with the plans. There is not one thing in Love You that isn’t Valentine and love centered from the pink and red police uniforms to the heart shaped mugs. It’s nonstop laughs and a definite DON’T MISS READ!! Can. Not. Wait. For. The. Next. One!!!
This book really had me exercising my "suspension of disbelief" muscles. I haven't read all of the books whose worlds crash together in this novel, and I could have used a little setting of the stage to begin (feel free to blame my less than stellar memory for that request). Once I was more oriented I could appreciate the crazy world that Amy and Hamish find themselves in. They felt so real to me, in a very edgy and yet very likable way. Their extended families and friends brought even more drama and crazy to the story, and the town of Luview was definitely the pink and red icing on the elopement cake. I could picture it all (wouldn't this make one heck of a film?). Hamish and Amy also manage to have a believable and just-right physical relationship in among all this chaos. I enjoyed this novel very much, and was pleased when everything worked out so well (and so fittingly!) in the end. I was given an ARC and volunteered to write a review.
Julia Kent’s Shopping for a Highlander’s Elopement is a hilarious, heartwarming whirlwind that blends quirky charm with genuine emotion. Hamish and Amy’s attempt at a quiet wedding spirals into a laugh-out-loud adventure filled with eccentric townsfolk, meddling mothers, and one very enthusiastic moose.
Kent’s signature wit shines through every page, and the chemistry between the leads is electric. If you love Scottish footballers, surprise proposals, and romantic comedies that embrace the beautiful messiness of love, this book is a must-read!!!!
OMG this has to be the best one yet. I thought Shannon and Declan’s wedding was hilarious but this one is that on steroids. My hubby kept asking me what was so funny. Julia has a way of making you laugh so hard you….well…you know. Not only are we dealing with Marie’s crazy antics but Fiona’s as well. Even better we are shown a glimpse of characters from two other series. It was positively magical. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
Shopping for a Highlander’s Elopement by Julia Kent is the uproariously hilarious story of Hamish and Amy. Wow…I laughed so hard throughout this read! But, it was also tender, sweet, romantic, and filled with steam! I’ll never think of Hot Springs or Randy again, without laughing. These characters are outrageous…and the moms were the levity that brought the story to a new level! I can’t recommend this story enough!!! Light-hearted and loving read!!
I so enjoyed reading more about Amy and Hammish! I've always loved this 'relationship' in the books leading to to their own story. Both Mom's/Mum's are crazy when it comes their children, and especially weddings! This book explains so much of their backstory! It has all the feels and chemistry that burns up the pages! I highly recommend this book and the entire series!
Hamish is a TOTAL swoon. This story is best read in order to get all the history and hijinx. It's packed full of chaos and fun interspersed with those life truth nuggets, which put it all into perspective. And typical of Julia Kent stories, youll be laughing, crying, smiling, sighing, swooning and back to laughing again.
If you love a packed full romp with laughs on the side, this is for you. But if that is you, start from the very beginning. It is so worth it!
Another in the fast paced series by Julia Kent with laughs, loves, and hijinks! This time the hijinks are led by Amy and Hamish’s mothers who cannot agree on where and how their wedding should be held to the point that Amy and Hamish decide to elope. The characters in this series are laugh out loud funny, but there is also so much heart to these books as only Julia Kent can do. Fun, fun read.
