Navigating 3A Diagnoses

A Father’s Medical Insights and Practical Approaches for ASD, ADHD, and AE (Autoimmune Encephalitis)

I am the father of a 19-year-old son who, after previous diagnoses of ADHD and ASD and many years since the onset of developmental regression, was diagnosed at the age of 17 with an autoimmune neurological Autoimmune Encephalitis (AE).

Alongside the other two diagnoses, primarily regarded as neurodevelopmental conditions, one standalone medical diagnosis has entered our lives.

Autoimmune encephalitis is a rare and often misunderstood (thus potentially unrecognized) neurological diagnosis, by far less known and discussed than ASD or ADHD.

Immunological therapy not only alleviated my son’s symptoms attributed to AE but also began to improve symptoms long associated with his ASD and ADHD diagnoses.

That has inevitably led me, as a father, to some reflections.

Can a medical diagnosis of AE interfere with ongoing neurodevelopmental processes?
Could it act as an underlying cause of ASD/ADHD symptoms?
Or produce similar symptoms that could be misdiagnosed as ASD/ADHD?

♦ ♦ ♦

Many books and studies, along with guides and self-help books, focus on ASD and ADHD solely or on their co-occurrence.

The inclusion of the medical diagnosis AE in the context of neurodevelopmental conditions of ASD and ADHD sets this book apart.

I hope it offers a small, but still novel contribution to the field.

Navigating 3A Diagnoses can be beneficial for parents of children with ASD and ADHD since it delves into symptoms often observed in these neurodevelopmental conditions, such as regression in children and teens, insomnia, speech delays, hyperactivity, difficulty focusing, behavioral issues, and psychiatric symptoms like anxiety and depression.

The book also explores why common approaches, therapies, medications, diets, vitamins, and supplements, fail to address these symptoms if neurological conditions underlie them.

It may also be beneficial for medical professionals and those working with complex neurodevelopmental and autoimmune disorders, as it delves into how some symptoms and experiences associated with ASD and ADHD could indicate potential underlying brain inflammatory conditions.

It might help recognize the encephalitis.

It might help initiate therapy that targets the underlying cause of the symptoms.
