It was supposed to be a sexy calendar shoot to raise money for K-9 service dogs. Photographer Georgie Flynn never expected to break all her personal rules and jump into bed with one of the hunky men posing. And after their steamy night together, she certainly never expected to see him again…despite their powerful connection.
When she's targeted by a stalker and possible bomber, Georgie finds that her gorgeous one-night stand is the only one who can help.
Brad Lawson, an FBI operative, and his K-9 bomb sniffing partner are assigned to protect the pretty photographer--and this time, he’s determined to keep things professional. He just didn't count on their explosive connection rekindling. But with a deadly threat on the horizon, will he be able to keep his body’s demands in check and complete his mission?
D. D. Ayres is the author of the K-9 Rescue series which includes Primal Force and Force of Attraction. She loves men in uniforms and dogs, making the K-9 Rescue series with St. Martin's Press a dream come true. She currently lives in Texas where she's at work on her next novel.
Georgie Flynn is a photojournalist who gets caught up in an FBI investigation, looking for a bomber they think is connected to her. They're not sure if she's a willing accomplice or being unwittingly manipulated. Brad Lawson is the K-9 bomb technician assigned to watch her, who happened to be her one-night stand weeks before.
This story had a great start and managed to develop a solid story in just a few pages. The romance smoked from the onset but suffered a bit at the end because of its brevity. But, the ending held promise and the novella set up the series perfectly. Isn't that what a novella is supposed to do?
Oh, and let's not forget Zander, the bomb-sniffing canine. His relationship with His handler was touching, which helped me forgive Brad's duplicity. I love having a pooch be front and center in a story and am excited about what's next in this series.

Georgie's weekend is all booked with beefcakes. As a photojournalist, she don't usually take pictures of hunky men for a calendar, but she accepted, as a favor to her friend. She'll also goes againt her personal rules to never sleep with a client, but there's something about the hot firefighter that she just couldn't resist. After that, they both made it clear it can't goes further than that.
Two months later, Georgie's life suddenly become like in an action movie when her house is burglarized and FBI's agents begin to ask her questions that seem to be more and more accusatory. And when her one-night stand appear on her doorstep with a beautiful Labrador retriever after they call for the explosives detection team, the young woman wonder what else did he lie about if he wasn't honest about his name and his job.
I liked the heroine's believable reaction when she learned the truth about Brad. She's a smart woman and she took a little time before trusting him again. You can guess who is the villain the first moment he enter the scene and the whole thing seemed a little far-fetched but I put it on the story being only 100 pages. The same thing could be said for the romance who was not as well developed as I wanted. But the author never lost my attention from start to finish.
I read the six other books in the series before picking this novella, so I can tell you that the rest of the series is worth reading. You will follow the adventures of K-9 officers and handlers. Dogs, action and romance, what else can you ask for ?
I already read book 1 and went back to catch this one. It's ok. It's a novella so the character development is lacking. It also has insta-lust and ends as HFN. It's a pleasant, but very short read.
Necessary Force is the introductory novella in the K-9 Rescue series, for the most part pretty enjoyable, with a strong independent heroine in Photographer - Georgie Flynn, and a sexy-hot alpha FBI agent in Brad Lawson, with his dog Zander, he is pretty irresistible!
After meeting originally on a photo shoot, and ending up in bed together, Georgie never expected to run into Brad again, especially after he told her his name was Philip Dexter and that he was a Fireman. After being exposed to a possible stalker as well as being suspected of possibly being involved in terrorist activity Georgie comes face-to-face with Brad (Philip) again in his actual line of work as a K-9 Service Dog Handler, needless to say she doesn't take that fact he omitted the truth from her too well.
”Take your doubtful integrity and go be loyal and brave somewhere else.”
As I said this is a quick novella and where some parts felt overly and unnecessarily expanded, others that felt important didn’t seem too offer enough. Nevertheless, I spent an enjoyable hour with this couple, although it wasn’t too difficult to work out who the stalker/terrorist was, and I have to say their motives and subsequent total lack of a real explanation are what lost this book a star for me...
I am looking forward to the next book in theK-9 Rescue series - Irresistible Force, which is due for release 26th August 2014.

Fan-frickin-tastic! That’s all I’ve got to say right now. Just fan-frickin-tastic. I absolutely loved this novella. I can’t say that I read this in a single sitting because I started reading it over breakfast and then had to go to work, but I definitely couldn’t stop thinking about it all day.
Ayres is a very descriptive author. Everything is laid out creatively, yet plainly for the audience allowing them full access to the story. The story itself was riveting and very suspenseful. She develops a complex plot in a rather brief look at the world in her upcoming series. Her characters were completely unique. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know both main characters. Watching them struggle against their attraction to each other while trying to do what’s right was quite inspiring. Ayres combines the best of many worlds to create this perfectly unforgettable story.
This was a great intro to a series that I’m not going to be able to resist. I can’t wait to read the next!
Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this work in exchange for an honest review.
Wonderful novella written as an introduction to the series. This could have easily been a full length novel with very little extra work. The plot was unique and the attraction and romance hot.
Georgie is a free lance photo journalist who has gotten herself caught up in a domestic terrorism bomb plot. Brad is an FBI K-9 agent who is supposed to protect her and find the bomb. What he also finds is true love.
This was an excellent quick read, reminding me of why I like this series so much. There's a hot guy (of course, this time an FBI agent), a cute dog, a mystery, and an intelligent woman. Georgia is a photojournalist in Washington DC, and after her apartment is burgled, she finds herself involved in a bomb threat because the FBI believes she may have taken a picture of a bomber or something related. They view her with suspicion, but Brad (along with Zander) volunteer to protect her after their sizzling one-night stand. The mystery is interesting, and I also liked getting a peek into the world of a photographer. Very enjoyable and quick read. I wish it had been a full-length romance.
Necessary Force is a prequel novella that introduces readers to D.D. Ayres' new K-9 Rescue series. As a fan of romantic suspense and an animal lover of course this series immediately caught my attention & I couldn't resist requesting a review copy on Netgalley.
Photographer Georgie first meets Brad when he is one of the models posing for the photos she is taking for a charity calender. After an incredibly hot one night stand she never expected to see him again and it isn't until several months later when their paths cross. Unfortunately they only meet again because Georgie is being targeted by a stalker and when they do meet she realises that everything he told her before was a lie. Now he's supposed to be protecting her but Georgie isn't sure whether she can trust him.
I think the main reason I didn't love this novella as much as I expected to was because of the lies that Brad had told when he first met Georgie. I didn't really think he had a plausible excuse for those lies and that made it hard for me to forgive him. Obviously in a novella the romance has to move fairly quickly but because I wasn't impressed with the way Brad had behaved I found it harder to accept that Georgie forgave him so quickly and was willing to jump into bed with him. I just think that if they'd had a simple one night stand with no awkward drama then I would have found it easier to believe that they could fall in love later down the line when they met again. That would have meant the story could have had a stronger focus on the suspense side of the story rather than the awkwardness between the two of them. The suspense side was a little on the lacking side because it was pretty obvious for a long time who the stalker was.
It isn't all bad though and there are a lot of things I liked about the story. The writing is good, the sex scenes were hot and I did like both of the characters (if I ignored Brad's lies!). I think the problems with the lack of suspense and the rushed feeling romance will probably be significantly reduced in the next book which is a full length novel so will allow the author to expand on the elements that were missing slightly here. In spite of the problems Necessary Force is a quick and enjoyable read and it has definitely caught my interest enough to make me want to pick up Irresistible Force.
When I saw this cover on Netgalley, I couldn't resist it. Totally due to that hot blonde on the cover, you know the one giving you that soulful stare. When I saw it was about a K-9 unit, I had to request it. I have been a fan of K-9 teams since Tom Hanks and James Belushi were upstaged by their 4 legged companions. An though I wish that the dog, Zander had a larger part in the book, I can understand it is a novella and therefore his role was limited.
This book opened with Georgia Flynn, up and coming photojournalist, waking up after a night of mutual seduction with a man whom she believes is a K-9 officer with the fire department. Georgie had gone to do a charity shoot for a friend. All day long Georgie had been taking pictures of hard bodied men and their K-9 companions and been able to be professional. That is until Philip Dexter arrived; then she nearly lost her composure. When he talked her into dinner and she invited him home, she figured that would be the end of it since they were both incredibly busy people, both concentrating fiercely on their careers. That is until two months later when Georgie came home to find her house broken into and items missing. It wasn't long before the FBI showed up and insisted on bringing in a bomb sniffing unit to check her apartment that she realizes that Philip wasn't exactly who he said he was. Instead she is introduced to Brad Lawson, and that's when her life begins to flip upside down.
This was a decent novella and introduction to a new series. Two characters who have mutual attraction and former relationship, put into a stressful situation that speeds their connection and trust of one another. Overcoming their rocky start and working around the professional parameters set by him being FBI and her official protector. I do wish that Zander had a larger role, but there is only so much that can be done in a novella. I look forward to reading the next full length book, Irresistible Force, in the series. I gave this 3 stars.
The premise of the book is what enticed me to pick it up but after finishing it; I was left with more concerns than enjoyment. Well, first off, the names in the synopsis are different from the names in the book. I hope this is fixed soon because it’s only going to mislead readers. Secondly, I don’t think the book title works for the book. After reading it, the title just doesn’t fit for me. I know what you’re thinking, these are superficial issues and you’d be right. That’s not what really bothered me about the novella.
The main issue I have is that this romantic suspense just had suspense. Granted, I absolutely enjoyed the suspense. It was exciting and kept me engaged in the story, but I found the romantic aspect of the book…lacking. Because of the length of the novella, there is not much room for a romance to grow. And it’s not really a romance, it’s two people having sex and thinking it feels like more, but nothing ever develops. The page time that the hero and heroine shared was mainly in regards to the suspense and not the romance. The sex scenes were pretty glossed over as well.
I know this is the beginning of a series but I would have loved for this story to have been written as a full length novel. There was so much promise and so much room to expand on the story and when it wasn’t, I ultimately felt cheated. But I did appreciate that the author didn’t wrap up the romance with confessions of love or a happily ever after which did leave room for growth in future books. I just wish some of that growth would have happened in this book to make the chemistry between the couple believable.
I think it’s a great start to what’s going to be an engaging romantic suspense series. I just hope that there is an equal balance of romance and intrigue.
Brad Lawson and Georgie Flynn are the likable main characters in this short novella. Georgie is a photographer doing a photo shoot for a calendar on K-9 service dogs, and Brad Lawson is the sexy FBi operative who shares an amazing night with her after his photo session. These two don't expect to see one another again, but when Georgia is stalked by a possible bomber, Brad is the one who can protect and help her.
Though very short, I enjoyed this one. I liked the characters and their romance, the suspenseful storyline, and the tie to the K-9's that the series brings. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing an ARC in return for an honest review.
A great introduction into this series. Very fast read and the story didn't suffer at all considering the length. If anything, I'm more excited to start this series. Fans of romantic suspense will enjoy this one, I'm sure.
Georgie is a professional photographer well-known for her shoots for news organizations and a former Pulitzer nominee, and for some reason at the start of this is photographing some hot body calendars.
She ends up hitting it off with a smoking hot firefighter and they bang the night away (not on page 😢), and then go their separate ways.
Two months later, Georgie's apartment is broken into, and guess who shows up as part of the investigation....hot body firefighter, who is actually hot body FBI agent.
I actually liked the start of this one....except for the author's use of the phrase "nether curls"....
But after the little jump ahead two months, it feels like the author kind of forgot they were writing a romance. There's little interaction between the MCs, and beyond one boring sex scene kind of randomly thrown in there, there's not really anything that feels like it's building to a relationship.
The suspense part was good (although the bad guy is pretty obvious), but as a romance, it was pretty flat.
Heather's Notes So not sure how I feel about this story. I didn't feel like Brad and Georgie ever really resolved the entire fake identity at the beginning. I thought more should have been done about that. I also figured out fairly quickly who the bad guy was. That was kind of sad actually. Still I will read more, the dog saves the story.
This book was a relatively quick romantic suspense read that had me reading it straight through from beginning to end. It was suspenseful, and sweet, and the chemistry between the two main characters was palpable. I only wish Zander, Brad's K-9 partner, was in the book a little more. I was able to guess pretty quickly who the stalker was but that in no way detracted from my enjoyment. As it was a pretty short book it did not have the detail and twists and turns that most romantic suspense books have and I wish the bedroom scenes were better written, but overall I found this novella to be a great intro into D.D. Ayres's K-9 Rescue world.
There is attraction, sexy connections, suspense, and thrills. You find yourself reading as fast as you can to see if you were right when you guessed who the bad guy was and how the victim was going to get away or escape or even just survive. The story is so intense you can't bring yourself to interrupt your reading, not even to skip ahead to the end to relieve some of the tension. I've got all of them and hope that the author will provide some more and not end the collection after just the six novels and this novella. There's just something special about a story with a working K-9 a part of it.
My Review: This was a quick and fun read to get the ball rolling on this series. I really enjoyed Georgie and Brad, though due to it being a novella the relationships develop quickly. That being said I really like the way the suspense element is set up, it was really creative and something I hadn't seen before (or at least in a really long time). Of course any time we have K-9 dogs involved I love them! This is a great way to give me a taste of the series to come and I am ready to dive in!
I enjoyed reading this book. I couldn't put it down. Everytime I tried to put it down and go to sleep I get back up read so more. I kept telling myself to read one more chapter. I really appreciate you writing about K-9's because I am a dog lover. I will be buying another "Necessary Force" book. Again thanks and keep writing.
Quick fun read with enough drama to make it interesting. The main characters are intelligent , the action is fast paced, and who can resist a Golden Lab ? Me like, will read more.
Georgie and brad and Zander's(dog) story. Lots do suspense, loving with an interesting ending. Georgie never thought she would connect with a K9 & handler during her shoot.
fast paced, insta sex. Not much depth here. I understand that it is a prequel novella, but somehow I could not connect with the main characters. Well written. There were several plot moments that I did not find engaging.
Pretty short, a little hard to believe that Georgie and Brad have a HEA rather than a HFN. I did guess the bomber as soon as he was introduced. Needed more of Zander (the dog)!
