I have read Her Last Holiday,The Guilty Couple, and Every Move You Make by this author and they were okay reads. I actually liked Every Move You Make a little more than the others. I wish I could say the same for It’s Always the Husband. As with two of the previous books, I had a hard time connecting to the characters. I wish there were more unique plots in thrillers these days. This one was about a single mom who meets a single dad whose two wives have died.
The character development in this book is practically non-existent. I never knew who I was reading about because they were so interchangeable. Reading it was a chore, and I didn't feel invested at all. The story itself was so very unbelievable that it was hard to enjoy. It just seemed to go on and on and on. At one point, I just said to myself, no more of this author for me. It's listed as "It’s Always the Husband: The brand new nail-shredding psychological thriller for 2025 from the million copy and Sunday Times bestselling author of The Guilty Couple". I am learning that if you have to describe your books this way, you're probably lying. Publishers, please stop putting these promises in the titles of your books; we readers hate it.

Gossip? Or truth?! Better think fast…your life depends on it! Following her divorce, Jude and her daughter Millie move to a new town. Which means a new school for Millie. And with that comes all the gossip from the moms at the school pick-up!
The latest tidbit from the rumor mill is that Will, the father of Millie’s new best friend may be a murderer! Wait…whaat? Well, his first wife accidentally died😉, and his second partner all but vanished into thin air, so it’s safe to assume she too, is dead.
Uh-oh, I see a pattern developing here!
Maybe it’s time for Jude to take a moment and think about this. After all, her daughter may be spending time with her bff at Will’s home. And Jude herself is smitten by Will (yup, that happened😅) Maybe she should take these warnings a bit more seriously! Gee,Ya think!?
This was another entertaining thriller from C.L. Taylor. In fact, it’s my fifth read by her. All delivering a great twisty ride that leave me looking forward to her next.
Have you been searching for a fun, light thriller for your next read? Look no further! 🤓🍿📚
Oh yes, the school run, I’m still doing it after all these years! The school gates of Saint Helena‘s Primary School are abuzz after a dramatic incident involving Will Ledger, whose daughter Millie is now best friends with Jude‘s daughter, Betsy, who are newly arrived in Lowbridge. We all know school gates can be covens for gossip mongering at the very least, especially among the Queen Bees but are the rumours about Will true? “We all know what you did” rings out from someone and Jude has no clue what that means. Initially. One dead wife can be viewed as a tragedy but additionally a missing girlfriend would seem to form a pattern. However, this isn’t the only mystery in Lowbridge and Queen of Queen Bees Victoria is determined to get answers. After all, it’s always the husband, right?
I’m a big fan of CL Taylor and this is another good one to add to her pile of best sellers. The first half is especially strong and I mean STRONG! There’s whip smart dialogue, especially between Will and Jude,a ‘laser’ sharp, brilliantly astute portrayal of the school gate coterie and sparks which fly in all directions. It’s a bit like sitting on top of a huge powder keg just waiting for the thing to ignite and explode in all directions. Pressure piles on top of pressure with excellent mysteries to ponder and speculate over, just as the coven does. There’s delusion, confusion, exclusion, plenty of allusion and illusion, a barrel load of suspicion some well-founded others less so but it all adds up to the delicious ‘juiciness’.It chills, it shocks at the manipulation and devious behaviour. Cats chase mice, then the mice chase the cat, or cats but the million dollar question is who is the biggest cat? Who can Jude trust? Are these female characters especially harpies or just strong women? What about the men especially Will?? I’m all in watching the dramas, side changing and shenanigans as it’s engrossing and entertaining.
The last section does get a bit convoluted as it twists and turns in a myriad of directions often up blind alleys following the wrong suspect but it is still very enjoyable. There are quite a lot of characters to keep track of especially towards the end, which does make my head spin a bit.
Overall, it’s a really good highly entertaining domestic style psychological drama.
Publication date = 5th of June in the United Kingdom.
With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Avon Books for the much appreciated epub in return for an honest review.
I am a long time fan of CL Taylor, her books are always so entertaining and addictive. I was thrilled to get an early copy of It’s Always the Husband to read, and once I picked it up I couldn’t stop reading it. Whilst it is a dark mystery, it is so much fun to read. There are lots of interesting charcoal, not all of them are easy to like but that just adds to the enjoyment in this twisty thriller.
I love a book with short chapters and multiple points of view to help tell the story. If you have kids you will know the joys of the school run and the dreaded school mums… you are either in with the cool mums or not. Jude is new to the small town of Lowbridge and has formed a friendship with the single dad at the gates, Will. The mums are quick to point out that he has one dead wife and a missing girlfriend, and that she should stay away. But Jude can’t see him being a killer and set out to find out the truth.
This a town full of liars, cheats and drama!! So good.
Thanks so much to Avon Books UK for my copy of this book. Publishes on June 5th.
my rating is 3.5 rounded to 4. I enjoyed reading her psychological books. This was a slow start for me, and it took me a while to get into the characters. Gossip at the school gates all the mothers talking about each other.Jude fancys will, but there's gossip going around as his first wife died and where the second one..Will is her daughters friend dad...Victoria is the queen bee her ex husband the stalker...sorrell who's husband is depressed...for me a bit confusing at times..good ending..looking forward to reading more of her books.
This is a good mystery book to pick up and read! There were a lot of plot twists, which I really liked. It had me wondering what was going to happen next! lt was a fast paced read that I couldn’t put down. The ending literally left me in complete shock! While I did think this book was a good read, it felt unoriginal and lacked character depth. This book was written in multiple point of views and was easy to read. It had small town vibes with some humor to it! I will definitely be reading more books by this author. Overall, I give this a 3 out of 5 stars!
“It’s always the Husband” is a fiction novel about a single Dad named Will that lives in Lowbridge. Two deaths under a short time span leaves the town suspicious. Will has a dead wife, then a girlfriend of his goes missing. The people in Lowbridge begin to gossip and assume it’s Will. The story unravels as we get to see all the points of views. It’s a mysterious puzzle that soon becomes revealed! So, is it always the Husband?
Content warnings include death, grief, murder and violence.
Thank you to NetGalley, author C. L. Taylor and Avon Books Publishing for this advanced digital reader’s copy in exchange for my honest review!
C L Taylor is one of my “ I can’t wait for her next book to come out” author. I should have known better that this wasn’t going to be the usual “ the husband killed the wife “ type of read because this author isn’t as so obvious as this in her stories she makes the readers brain matter tick over constantly and in a good way.
So based around moms and dads at school gates, and gossipy people one woman fires up an affair with one of the dads but all the others are soon to inform her that his wife disappeared in suspicious circumstances police found no evidence it was him but that didn’t stop the rumours and accusations….so is SHE IN DANGER , or is this just unfounded gossip.
Knowing this author, it’s not going to be THAT simple to solve and it truly wasn’t. With friendships formed with women and who knows what and when throw in a potentially dead woman’s diary and you’re hooked until the last page, the last sentence the last page.
This is a book you read when all distraction fades into the background nothing will pull you away from reading this once you’ve stuck you’re nose into it I assure you, make sure this is on your wishlist to buy not long to wait Now
I was lucky enough to be sent an arc of this as a VIP reader. Callys books since the first one I read have always had a hold over me. I don't know what she puts into them, but each and every book is so gripping, thrilling, tense, and a page turner, including this one. She's one of the only authors who I've read every single one of books and still wait like a lost puppy for more. I will always recommend her to everyone.
In her newest book, this one. Soon to be released. I devoured it within 24 hours. If you're a school mum or live in a small town, some part of this story will relate to you. The story is told through each of the different mums/dads characters in a small town, and it's the usual... Mum clichés, drama, school runs, affairs, secrets, lies. This book has it all. I really enjoyed it and am already waiting for her next book. highly recommend. Another 5/5 star read.

My Review
Jude has just recently moved into a small town post divorce, she can't warm to the mums who convene at the school gates gossipy judgement oozing out of them. She is however drawn to Will, one of the single dads at the gates and they get on, they have young daughters of the same age and there is no denying the attraction. When Jude finally goes to a group meet set up by the driving force that is Victoria, head mum she is pumped for info about her relationship with Will. In between the gossip and alcohol Jude also finds out why they hate Will so much. His first wife died and his girlfriend went missing, the group is worried for her whilst spilling some gossip and secrets of their own.
So the book goes between the key characters povs, Jude, Victoria, Victoria's ex Andy (who is a cop btw), Sorrell across X days. With a creepy eerie suspense building like what is Will's deal, the domestics between Victoria and Andy (they have kids so custody and all the jazz). Victoria is a total PTA mum but also in everybody's business, little miss popular, its a bit of a bitch and a control freak. The group is a very mixed dynamic, Jude is over their nonsense before even getting fully embroiled in it all but she needs info. What she does hear only makes her want to do some more digging, she has her own trauma from the past which pushes her on and her needs for answers.
Oooooh what a bitchy wee town, gossip, drama, secrets, suspense, thriller, trauma, like this has it all. I have been having some hard readers block but this pulls you in and lets you absorb all their drama/chaos/suspense so you can pause your own life for a bit. This is one of the reasons I love reading so when you can't it is super stressful, this book pulled me out of mine. Full absorption, some shady characters, skulduggery and who doesn't like scandal in a small town that isn't your own, 4.5/5. We are big fans of Taylor's work and yet to read one we didn't like, yet another fab read of dastardly deeds, dodgy biscuit people and a whole lot of drama and danger!
This book drew me in at once and kept me entertained throughout. It’s a bit of a gossipy and relationship whodunnit, no police procedural processes to find here!
When Jude moves to a small town, the bitch women at the school gate drive her to befriend Will. Particularly since their daughters have become best friends. Jude is soon warned about Will though, after all, he had lost two wives in suspicious circumstances. The last one, Robin, simply disappeared.
There’s a lot of side plots with black mail, cheating and controlling husbands. Plenty to keep going, told in a deliciously frothy way. One of the author’s best books to date!
Cally Taylor is certainly one of the mistresses of the psychological thriller. I was so excited to read this ARC as I knew I would be in for mystery, intrigue, and some amazing twists – and I wasn’t disappointed. As well as the thrills, Cally is able to create a very real portrait of the type of people you can meet at the school gates, and the little cliques that exist.
When Jude and her daughter moved to town, and her daughter Millie joins the local school, she meets the school mafia, headed by Victoria and her cronies. She also meets the handsome Will whose daughter becomes Millie’s best friend. However, when Jude finds out that Will’s wife died and his girlfriend disappeared the school mother’s start to cause Jude to wonder – after all one death is careless, but 2 missing partners.... What happened to Will’s previous partner? Is she dead or still alive? When Victoria’s PC ex-husband ends up dead, was it suicide or was it murder?
Cally Taylor crafts a fascinating story full of interesting and believable characters, and more than a few twists and turns. I loved it!
This book is a domestic thriller with a side of gossip—or maybe it's the other way around—but either way, it was a blast to read. Jude and her daughter move to a small town after her divorce, where she starts dating her daughter's new friend's dad, Will. But when the town's gossip reveals details about Will's past, things take a dark turn. One wife dying is a tragedy, but another going missing seems like a pattern. I loved how this book was told through multiple POVs, although at times it was a bit tricky to keep track of them. This domestic thriller was both fun and scandalous, and I couldn't put it down. If you enjoy a juicy thriller with plenty of gossip, this one is for you! Thank you Netgalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
A physiological thriller with twist and turns about a mother and daughter who move to a new area. I didn’t enjoy this book as much as the previous books I have read by this author. I felt there were too many characters giving their point of view and I found this confusing. Thank too to NetGalley and Avon Publishing for my e-copy in exchange for an honest review
Well, this was an interesting one. I really enjoyed reading about these crazy women, who proved to be much more clever than expected. However, the reveal of the bad person's ID wasn't as big a moment as I expected it to be. It felt flat. Also, the last paragraph - a bit disturbing.
I was thrilled to get an early copy of It’s Always the Husband. C. L. Taylor has done it again. Her knack for weaving nail biting suspense with utterly believable characters had me hooked from the very first page. The short, punchy chapters told from multiple characters meant I kept telling myself, “Just one more…” until I realised it was well past midnight.
Moving to a new area, Jude crosses paths with Will, a single father, whose little girl befriends Jude's daughter. Trouble is, there are whispers that he murdered his previous partners. Could it really be true?
The mystery surrounding what had happened to the two women in Will's life had me suspicious of everyone; nobody is quite what they seem. It was fascinating to read the drama unfold through different eyes. There was something deliciously gossipy yet unsettling about it all. Every chapter dropped new breadcrumbs, so I was constantly guessing who was truly responsible and who might be covering up dark secrets.
And “one dead wife is tragic, two looks like murder” is the perfect tagline.
I’ve loved every book by C L Taylor, and this one was no exception. It’s Always the Husband is twisty, gripping, and completely addictive.
Thanks to the author, Netgalley and Avon for the advance copy.
It's always the husband... or is it... or whose husband?
C.L. Taylor's books are always a wild ride! You know you won't be disappointed when you pick one up. They always grab you from the beginning and keep you guessing until the end. This one was another great read with a surprise ending!
Don't tell anyone your secrets, even your friends, because it can bite you in the butt!
This story is about missing people, tons of secrets, and some messed-up friends.
It had short chapters which were told in many POV’s. I found the storyline good and there were plot twists throughout the book, some unexpected and some expected.
My only problem was that there too many characters for me, so much so that when the ending came, I’d forgotten who the person was!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this ebook in exchange for my honest review.
Great cliff hanger right at the end. Overall didn’t find this that gripping. I have read another book by CLT that was in a similar written style to this one, and I tend to not enjoy them as much as her other books. What they have in common is several characters, which have their own chapters. However, I did enjoy this one more than don’t move closer. I wouldn’t say this is a must read, sadly.
4.5 stars - What an engaging and hectic story about a bunch of mothers who all know each other from the school run! Definite desperate housewives vibes.
Jude is new to the area with her daughter and she gets to know a single dad, Will, on the school run. But the other mums are suspect of him and she knows he has an interesting past. What unfolds is a lot of drama and intrigue!
This book is told from a number of different POVs and follows the relationships of not only Jude and Will but several of the other school mums and their husbands too. At times it is a lot to take in but when it all unfolds it makes for a story that is very hard to put down!
The only slight downside is the complex web of characters, at times it gets a bit overwhelming and it’s often hard to remember which school mum is who! But apart from that I loved this one, it kept me hooked and guessing the whole time and there were plenty of twists / reveals along the way!
Thank you to NetGalley and Avon Books UK for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book was gripping from the start and I could not put it down, it was extremely fast paced and a real page turner. I thought the writing style was good and I really enjoyed how each chapter perspective worked its way through the group of ‘friends’. Even though there were a lot of different characters, I found myself straight away invested in each of the characters and their dynamic within the group.
In terms of the plot, I wouldn’t say this was anything out of the ordinary when it comes to a group of friends / school mums in a small town kind of thriller, however I did still thoroughly enjoy it. There were lots of twists through the book and I liked the fact no stone was left unturned and all questions were answered.
Overall this was an enjoyable book and I would recommend. Thank you NetGalley for my ARC!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Really enjoyed this one! Twisty, tense, and full of messy friendships and secrets. The characters aren’t always likable, but that just made the story more addictive. It slowed a little in the middle, but the ending was worth it clever and satisfying. Perfect if you like thrillers about toxic relationships and hidden pasts.

SYNOPSIS -Jude, freshly divorced, moves to the small town of Lowbridge with her daughter. -She quickly gets involved with Will, a charming single dad with a very messy past. His first wife died. Then his second wife died. Everyone’s got questions, and the gossip mill is running wild. -Jude wants answers, but the truth might be more dangerous than she expected. ⸻ MY THOUGHTS -The chapters are super short, which makes it easy to fly through. -There are a lot of characters and POVs to keep track of. Some were more interesting than others. -The pacing kept me entertained, but nothing really wowed me. -I didn’t feel super connected to anyone, and I didn’t care much about what happened by the end. -The mystery is fine. Not super twisty. -If the group of moms called themselves “the mamas” one more time, I was going to lose it. -It’s not bad. Just…meh. A decent distraction, but not something I’ll remember in a month. ⸻ TL;DR: ⭐️⭐️⭐️Fast-paced and easy to binge, but pretty forgettable. Good for a weekend read when you want something light and dramatic without needing to think too hard. ⸻ Thanks: Thanks to Avon Books UK and Netgalley for this digital ARC in exchange for an honest review. This book will be published on June 6, 2025.
Setting: 'Lowbridge', West Country, England; modern day. This is a psychological thriller set around the antics of a group of parents in a rural West Country town. Told from the points of view of several of the main characters, what is revealed is that all of them have problems or insecurities of one sort or another, some of which are self-inflicted! Jude has recently moved to the area with her daughter Betsy and is having difficulty breaking into the school gate clique of mothers dominated by the inimitable Victoria. She finds herself attracted to single dad Will, whose daughter Milly is her daughter's best friend. When, totally out of the blue, Jude is invited to Queen Bee Victoria's house to meet up with the other mothers, she is warned that Will has a chequered history - his first wife Ali died in the house having apparently fallen off a high ladder while decorating the hall and his subsequent partner Robyn disappeared without trace - so the group are suggesting that there's no smoke without fire and think Will killed them both. Jude however takes all this with some pinch of salt and remains in contact with Will. Meanwhile, Victoria is going through a divorce from her husband Andy, a police detective. Their relationship now is quite acrimonious and Victoria is upset to return home one day to find him in the house. Andy claims to be looking for some clothing items but has in fact been placing surveillance devices in the house, hoping to get evidence against Victoria for the upcoming custody battle for their two children. As for the rest of the group, one has a husband off work with depression and then receives a blackmail threat over something he has allegedly done.... This is the author's thirteenth novel. I have read most of the earlier ones but, whilst this was still a good read, I didn't think it was as good as many of the others. Still, I wasn't able to guess who had done what to whom until the big reveal and I also enjoyed the final twist in the tale. I selected this one as the monthly read for one of the book groups I attend so will be interested in seeing what they all make of it! My score - 8/10.
This is a great thriller centred around a group of Mums who met on the school run. When Jude’s daughter starts at the school she doesn’t even attempt to penetrate the popular group of Mums and is happy to stay on the periphery. Her daughter becomes friends with one girl and when Jude meets her father, she’s pleased to see he’s not part of the other group. When Will is attacked one morning near the school, Jude goes to help him and one of the other Mums, Victoria warns Jude to stay away from him. When Jude is invited round to Victoria’s with the others it’s clear she wants information out of her, but Jude also wants information from them. They all think Will killed his ex wife and girlfriend but Jude isn’t so sure. She’s intrigued to find out what happened to them but soon other incidents happen around this group of people, and it’s clear there’s someone trying to cause trouble for them all. This is a great thriller that will certainly keep you guessing what really happened. Thanks to Avon Books for the opportunity to read this book.
I am a big fan of this author and I always look forward to her new releases as she is an author that has never let me down. And I'm pleased to say this was another hit! Once again, her writing style is fantastic. It is so easy to read and I was hooked immediately. This held my attention throughout, I liked the characters and the drama between them definitely felt real. The plot was fast paced and the drama and tension never let up once throughout the whole book. It was an easy read that I flew through. I did get slightly muddled nearer the end as the plot became slightly convoluted but I managed to keep up. I would however consider this book to be more of a domestic drama/mystery than a thriller. If you are looking for a fast paced, quick, easy read that is full of drama, I highly recommend you check this out.
