I enjoyed getting back into the world of Nightmare Before Christmas and seeing Zero in the limelight. I thought the art looked great and Boogie’s Boys were actually well developed and made much more like-able in this continuation. Mostly though, it kind of sucked. The characterization doesn’t feel right, the musical style doesn’t work well in comic form, Christmas town isn’t happy enough and they also for some reason know all about Halloween and the doors? Mostly I Hated the part where zero was just getting dissed and beat up left right and center like wtf was that? Guy lost a fight to an evil gingerbread cookie who tried to boil him alive and I was ready to lose it, and the story about the kids dog getting hit by a car like what are we going for here and the elves are hypnotized into working what is going on. Howly the owl was great though during his brief section and as mentioned the trick or treaters were actually pretty like-able here for the most part
I love The Nightmare Before Christmas but I feel this manga does it wrong. The characters and setting felt off. For example, instead of going after Zero, Jack mopes about and is very unsure of himself. Unlike the movie, Christmas town seems like a horrible place with mind controlling elves and mean kids. I really struggled to finish this book as everything seemed out of character.
The succinct and graceful narrative of Zero's adventure in Christmas Town is certain to instill a sense of tranquility and ease in the reader, as they become aware of the abundant love that enveloped him throughout the story. It would be inappropriate to reveal too much, as spoilers can diminish the enjoyment of the story. However, it is worth mentioning that Zero is my preferred character, and I am particularly fond of his individual journeys. Any enthusiast of TNBC is sure to appreciate this tale!
It is difficult to rate this as it is a nightmare before Christmas! I know I love everything regarding this and you will too if you are a big fan, especially of Zero!
Although if you don't like Lock, Shock and Barrel then I would not recommend reading this Manga.
This was a cute little mini-sequel to the full movie, and it would be a great lighthearted book to read around the winter holidays; full of light adventure and just a tad of danger!
Disney Manga: Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas Zero’s Journey Jack is hard at work on something he just can’t seem to get right. He has the portal open but its not navigating properly. Jack says he’s close to reaching all the holidays. More than that the whole world. He wonders if Dr. Finklestein can help him again. Zero wants to play so Jack stops to play fetch with him for a little bit. Jack tells Zero he has it so easy. It looks like Zero gets sucked into a portal (this is the device Jack was working on) and Jack screams NOOO! Zero finds himself in Hinter Woods in front of the door to Christmas Town and opens it.
After being there for a little while, he can’t find the way back. I think this is an elf lady offers him something warm to drink, tells him to rest, and then shows him a book with the story of Christmas Town in it. It tells all about their traditions. Zero protest his displeasure when she says that people love Christmas Town more than Halloween and that he’ll find he’s lucky to be there now.. The elf lady sees that Zero doesn’t want to stay and says she can convince him and invites him on their evening flight. She says he can help them spot to the door back to Halloween Town. And since it’s a full moon out its his best chance to find home.
But they have to ask Santa. Christmas tho isn’t for a week. The Elf tells him she hopes he’ll enjoy his stay. All the citizens of Halloween Town form a search party to help find Zero. Sally (has a premonition) that she finds the doorway to Christmas Town, hears Zero’s barks, and then tells Jack. Jack says he’s going to go get him back. The Mayor begs him not to go. The last time he went he had all these strange desires and they almost lost him. Jack says he’s learned his lesson. Christmas isn’t his and he respect that.
The Mayor tries another tactic. He says tonight is the big Halloween planning meeting. Jack says no can do. Nothing comes before his best friend. Lock, Shock, and Barrel say they’ll go for him. They also say they’ve changed and they want to redeem themselves. Jack makes them promise they’ll go right to Zero and not get distracted. The children in Christmas Town are HORRID and start to harass Zero. (The elves?) They actually beat him silly (THE HELL?) The baker runs him away waving a rolling pin at him. He gets attacked by a cookie that comes to life. Meanwhile, Lock, Shock, and Barrell arrive and always they’re up to no good.
Zero is able to get away from the gingerbread man but then finds a man that really does not like living in Christmas Town (and I gotta say I can’t say I blame this man because I wouldn’t want to live here either). Zero sees a flashback that happened 10 years ago. The man had a puppy named One. On Christmas Day his puppy dies. It’s unclear how. I wanna say he flew out the window and got hit by Santa Claus’s sleigh? But what’s clear is that he died. And it left the man with bitterness towards Christmas.
Lock, Shock, and Barrel decide to “look for Zero” in a toy store (so they can do a little “shopping”) but end up wrecking the place and getting chased out and threatened for stealing. Zero finds a way to give the man (Myzer) peace of mind. This was another part what wasn’t very clear. At first, he thinks Zero is One but then he says oh you aren’t One. But now I see I should treasure the memories I had with him. I don’t know. It just didn’t make any sense to me. Then he thanks Zero. Then the gingerbread man for some strange reason apologizes when moments ago he was about to jump Zero.
Lock, Shock, and Barrell find Zero but then a crowd of people in Christmas Town find them and they aren’t happy. Lock, Shock, Barrell and Zero tumble into an underground toy factory. The book says at first the Christmas elves were startled by their ghostly guest but the terrible trio couldn’t resist joining in the fun. But then a big guy comes in and puts a stop to their fun. I think he curses the elves to obey and be well trained. Then he turns Lock, Shock, and Barrell into elves. Then he stands over all of them and orders them to work harder and faster.
Zero finds Santa in his office and gets him to play fetch with him. He makes him come to the elves’s workshop and then gets him to notice three faces he’s very familiar with. The book says they’re in a trance and the threat from Santa of not getting any toys drew them out of it. They recognize “Sandy” and yell GET HIM! Zero looks on in astonishment.
As Santa tries to escape them there’s all kind of chaos in the workshop. He gets caught in his own present making machine. He finally gets them cornered and asks them why they have to be so naughty all the time. They look at him in confusion and say they’re just having fun. He asks if they know the difference between being good and bad and they say no. He wonders if that’s possible and then says he believes them. He then invites them and Zero to a celebration that night.
At the celebration, everyone gets a toast. Zero gets the special honor of lighting the star on the top of the tree, but the lead reindeer gets jealous and bumps Zero. This makes the tree fall and catch on fire. Jack decides to go after Zero and take some of the others from Halloween Town. When he gets there, they see the fire. Jack realizes Zero must be near because he sees his own rib bone. While everyone is distracted by the fire, Lock, Shock, and Barrel sneak back into the toy store and start filling their bags. They find a sleigh and plan to make their escape in it.
Zero sees Clementine (the lead reindeer) in a bad situation and comes to her rescue. After this, they become fast friends. Now they work together to help put out the fire and save Santa’s workshop. Clementine, Zero, and the rest of the reindeer take the hoses from the firemen and put out the fire from above. There are presents missing and the elves search for them but can’t find them. Barrel finds Zero and asks him to take them back to Halloween Town with their presents. Meanwhile, Jack comes face to face with Santa.
Jack tells Santa he’s there for his pup and Santa says he’s their hero. Zero and Clementine deliver all the presents and Jack and Zero are reunited.
My Thoughts: I think Zero is too adorable! And I think it was the perfect lesson to show that you never really appreciate something until its gone. I just hope that after this Jack realizes his pet is the most important thing and that teaches him not to neglect Zero so much. What threw me off was the nose? Zero’s nose in the movie was red. Why in this was it orange and looked like a pumpkin head? I definitely liked the red one better.
At first, Christmas Town threw me off too. I was thinking this isn’t the Christmas Town we saw in the movie. But then I thought about it. We really didn’t *see* Christmas Town in the movie. Think about it. We got this perfect image through Jack’s eyes what Christmas Town was. We got a “illusion”. So, in a way this was a clever little lesson thrown in. Jack learned that “illusion” of wanting to take over Christmas wasn’t what he thought it would be. Zero also leans that the “illusion” of Christmas time with its charm, and beauty, and fragrant aromas are just that. The citizens are nasty, horrid, and not at all welcoming. And I can think a lot of times in my life when “the beauty” of something was deceiving. So, after some chapters this made a lot more sense why they might have depicted Christmas Town in this off-putting way.
What I liked that this story did was. A lot of times when reading comics or graphic novels, maybe because of vision issues, or just how the illustration is drawn, its hard to really get what’s going on in the drawing. I was wondering how this could be told from Zero’s perspective since he doesn’t talk and I was anticipating having issues with interpretation. But at the beginning of each new chapter there’s a short summary that helped somewhat. It gave you the basic idea of the last issue.
Even still, some stuff was a little sketchy. For example, I had to guess what happened to “One”. I had to kinda “fudge” what happened to make Zero get through to Mizer because it wasn’t clear. I just said he got through to him. But I think that’s the only real issue I had with the story. This just had a feel-good ending. It felt good to see Jack and Zero reunited. . I can’t imagine my pet getting lost in another town. And I think Jack would have HIT THE CELING if he found out how badly Zero was treated. Which is why I’m kind of disappointed that he let the Mayor convince him not to go.
I mean and what is up with this Mayor? He’s the MAYOR but he can’t seem to do anything without Jack. Maybe Jack should be the mayor of Halloween Town considering he’s the one everyone seems to listen to and he’s the one that seems to make all the decisions. Rating: 6 and a half.

A mishap with one of Jack's new inventions sends Zero to Christmas Town. Lock, Shock, and Barrel are hot on his heels, but where those three go, mischief is sure to follow. Can Jack save his best friend in time to prevent a Christmas disaster?
This is a chunky book, but a fairly quick read nonetheless since only the human characters talk and the focus is almost entirely on Zero. It starts out fairly light, but it doesn't take long before the story takes a dark turn. We're talking dead puppies, more than one jealous character causing problems, physical abuse (even if Zero's a ghost, it's still mean), brainwashing (This one really got me - those elves should unionise) and a fire that threatens to destroy Christmas entirely. Even for TNBC, that's a bit much.
It's still a fun read, even if it glosses past consequences for pretty much everything - even when characters behave badly they're not really called out on it, and the issues are never really addressed. I also wasn't sure why Zero ended up trapped in so many places - he's literally a ghost, surely he can just float through walls?
All that said, it's got a happy ending, and literally anything set in Halloween Town is really well done - the art renders the Town and its inhabitants so well that I'd love to see them draw another story set solely there. The art in general is very good - it's always easy to see what's going on, and everyone looks exactly as you'd hope they would. New characters fit the design aesthetic perfectly.
Not a bad visit to the Nightmare world, but it has more than a few niggles in storytelling that make me wonder exactly who this was aimed at. Lovely artwork though.
Very cute! This is a very quick, easy read, and it was fun to imagine how the lyric-like passages might sound in song form. The art is detailed and adorable. Would definitely recommend to anyone who likes The Nightmare Before Christmas!
I know I'm in the minority here, but this book was not for me. I love Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, but this book lacked the whimsy that the original possess. Shallow plot, scant dialogue, and graphics that were sometimes too cluttered to be easily discernible.
What a fun, quick read! I loved this side story about Zero and his journey into Christmas Town. It wasn’t a direct sequel but it was still a great read.
Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas: Zero's Journey (Ultimate Manga Edition/Disney Manga) By D.J. Milky, Kei Ishiyama, Kiyoshi Arai, David Hutchison, & Jun Suzuki
Official Synopsis: When Jack Skellington's faithful ghost dog Zero get's lost, the ghost pup must get the help of the residents of Christmas Town to find his way home. With Halloween plans on hold while Jack mounts a search, will they be reunited in time to save both holidays? At least Zero can't get in that much trouble...
Genres: Fantasy, Action, Adventure, Supernatural, Gothic, Horror, & Media Tie-In/Disney Book Style: Manga (Japanese Comics - Read Right to Left)
I decided to read Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas: Zero's Journey By D.J. Milky, Kei Ishiyama, Kiyoshi Arai, David Hutchison, & Jun Suzuki because I've already read Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas By Jun Asuka and watch the original film and loved them both, so I wanted to see how the sequel story will be. Once I started reading I fell in love because we get to see who Zero is as a character, which is very cute! This story follows Jack Skellington's ghost dog named Zero getting lost in Christmas Town trying to find his way home. Jack send Boogie's Boys, Shock, Lock & Barrel to find Zero but they soon cause chaos in Christmas Town while trying to find Zero but also wanting Christmas toys for themselves. Zero meets a cast of new characters and ones we've seen before in Christmas Town and also helps out things that go very wrong due to Boogie's Boys while hoping to find his way home. My favorite parts of this story are when Zero helps out this Elf guy who lost his dog named One in an slay accident back then and now he's very sad until Zero finds the spirit of One and brings him to the Elf to regained his happiness, so sweet of Zero. Another part I like is when Boogie's Boys, Shock, Lock & Barrel cause chaos in Christmas Town because it's so funny to see what messes they get into also they get possessed by an Christmas Elf boss and accidently start making toys so Zero has to save them with Santa Claws help. They're a lot of parts I love about this book but I don't want to spoil too much. I really love Zero's personality because he's very helpful, nice and tries his best no matter what, which is a very loyal dog! Also we see that Boogie's Boys haven't really change that much after the original story/first book but they're fun to see what chaos they make. The art style is very similar to Tim Burton's style that matches the film perfectly with some Manga influences combined, it's beautiful and captures the style of Tim Burton's spookiness of The Nightmare Before Christmas! Before reading this book please watch The Nightmare Before Christmas film and read Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas By Jun Asuka (1st Manga to this series). I will definitely re-read Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas: Zero's Journey By D.J. Milky, Kei Ishiyama, Kiyoshi Arai, David Hutchison, & Jun Suzuki because it's one of my favorite stories/sequel's and it's very cute! I would recommend this book to Tim Burton fans or people who are looking for a great follow up to Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas.
This was super cute! This manga takes place after the movie and has an entirely new plot (nothing was recycled). This is an adorable Christmas read (it takes place on Christmas Eve and is set mainly in Christmas Town) that has almost all of the characters from the source material (the movie). Some characters I felt were added unnecessarily (some side characters, ie. elves) however the manga did its job and gave me a haunted holiday read filled with my favorite quirky characters. I highly recommend this for fans of 'The Nightmare Before Christmas'! (If you haven't seen the movie but would like to read this, I would recommend watching the movie first as it does explain the characters and their connections to one another.)
4/5 stars. Just a cute little read I was able to gobble up in a single sitting. I'm a massive NBC fan, so I'm always interested on publications that enhance the lore of HalloweenTown without mutilating its source material in the process. (I'm looking at All Hail the Pumpkin Queen) Firstly, the art style was stunning, both unique, but still capturing the essence of NBC, even if the panel layout could be clumsy at times. The story itself is cute, though sometimes convoluted and unnecessary. But, honestly, I don't expect this manga based on a dated Disney B movie to be fine literature. It's a fun experience for any fan of the film, and its story taking place on Christmas Eve made it an appropriate read for the season
complete collection of zero's journey, all issues, all volumes. chapters 0-18 plus epilogue.
i read the first 3 volumes thru my library, which didn't carry the 4th volume.
this manga was in black and white, no color like the graphic novel volumes had. but at least i got to finish the story.
jack and sally and a couple others from halloweentown go to xmastown to find zero. zero helps save xmas. he rescues the jealous rudolph reindeer who caused a fire to start, and he and the reindeer fly up with the fire hoses and put out the fire before all the presents are ruined or the factory is burned down. and santa invites zero to join in pulling the sleigh on xmas.
Zero's Journey was such a delightful read. For me a very nostalgic read, having enjoyed The Nightmare Before Christmas my entire life.
I really enjoyed the illustrations and journey. We do get more of a backstory of Zero which was nice to see.
This felt true to the original story and elements within these pages. Light and quick read. Halloween town and its community are quick to help get Zero! This book starts right off and has a quick storyline and easy plot to follow. Feels like getting a hug from an old friend.
If you like -Disney -Nastalgic reads -Adventure Story -Found Family -Manga
Again wishing this app had half stars 3.5 ⭐️ While I LOVE the Nightmare Before Christmas this story just seemed a little cheesy at points. I likef the storyline, however I feel like it could have had more potential and been a little bit more in tune with the characters. It felt like some characters were a little too intense than they were in the original movie. While main characters are more wishy washy for lack of a better term. Just wishing it was a little bit more realistic to the movies characters. That’s all
The artwork is great, and I think I'd bump this up a star for kids interested in reading it. While this does tell a new story in the Nightmare Before Christmas universe, there's just not much to it, it's exceedingly simple and mostly involves characters we already know about. There are a few exceptions but they don't turn into much. So I'm a bit let down there, I'd love something to come along and expand this universe, but otherwise it's harmless fun for younger readers.
My favorite favorite favorite manga staring the cutes ghost dog, Zero! If you're a big "The Nightmare Before Christmas" fan, this is a perfect manga to collect and read. I'm slowly collecting the colored versions because I love the story presented. All your favorite characters are present alongside a new and colorful cast of characters to meet. It's a great Christmas read if you're looking for something to curl up with the night before Christmas. 😂
This was just OK. I really enjoyed revisiting Halloween Town even though most of this takes place in Christmas Town. I don't feel they got the essence of the characters in this book. They lacked depth and it was kind of hard to tell what was going on in some of the animations.
This is the first time I've read Manga- you start at the back of the book and read right to left so that was a fun challenge!
