TIME TO TELL THE TRUTH
Emily Hunt went missing on the Saturday afternoon of her graduation weekend but nobody noticed until Sunday.
Her body was found floating in a river, and a quiet loner was blamed because of ONE text message he sent her, which sounded like it could be a threat.
Twelve years later, her college friends gather to celebrate an engagement on a private island in Maine—with only one way in and one way out. Of course, you can only get to the Island during low tide, and a storm is coming in, making leaving the Island impossible.
Cue the ominous music…
When the close knit group, sworn to secrecy from what really happened, twelve years ago, find a dead man in the trunk of a car with a note: “time to tell the truth” it’s only the beginning of a plan designed to get a confession out of the REAL killer.
But, who lured them to this Island?
Been there, done that.
This trope has been done so often, and this one didn’t stand out from the crowd for me.
Perhaps it will be a better fit for readers who only read this genre on occasion, or for those who cannot get enough of “FINAL GIRL” type horror movies.

This book made such an impression on me that I can't even remember it. Yes, it was a very little impression, but?
Swear on a stack of Stephen King and Clive Barker that I just finished this book last week, and I'm still at a loss.
Should I apologize for my memory lapse? Kiss my what? No! If I can't remember, but I can still recall every plot twist to Robert Jordan and his Wheel Of Time series, then that automatically means this was f word awful!
I do recall thinking to myself, somewhere in this mess that I would avoid each and every Darby Kane book in existence.
I cannot recommend this crap. Believe me when I say it's crap.

Another read left me in limbo: should I like this book or should I hate the guts of each character and wish them painful deaths? I went back and forth between three and four stars during my reading journey. I simply weighed the pros and cons to decide on my verdict.
Here are the pros:
Despite the mixed feelings I had throughout my reading journey, I must commend the book for its captivating and promising premise. The blend of a locked room mystery and elements of suspense from "I Know What You Did Last Summer" (or rather, "I Know What You Did 20 Years Ago") created an enticing storyline that initially captured my attention. I appreciate the author's ambition in attempting to deliver a suspenseful and thrilling narrative.
Moreover, having read Darby Kent's previous book, I was already acquainted with her writing style and found it enjoyable. Her ability to weave words together in a captivating manner motivated me to explore her latest work. I appreciate authors who can maintain consistency in their writing, and Kent certainly possesses that talent.
The book's strengths lie in its riveting whodunnit concept, which successfully builds escalating pressure and maintains a heart-throbbing pace. The twisty and smart ending, when executed well, adds an extra layer of satisfaction for readers invested in solving the mystery. I commend the author for delivering on these aspects and providing a gratifying conclusion.

However, there are certain drawbacks that hindered my overall enjoyment of the book. One significant issue was the presence of numerous unlikeable characters. I found it difficult to muster enough interest to care about their individual fates, except for Sierra, who is a colleague of Mitch. Sierra's attendance at the engagement party, despite never having met Mitch's irritating friends before, struck me as puzzling. I felt compelled to shake some sense into her and warn her about wasting her time with someone like Mitch. His enigmatic nature, combined with the absence of his own narration, left us with little insight into his true character. Is he a secret psychopath with a cursed genetic inheritance from his family, or is he simply a creepy and brooding individual? The lack of information made it challenging to form a solid opinion. I understand Sierra's savior complex and her protective instincts, given her own family situation, but I did not find Mitch particularly appealing thus far.
Additionally, the other narrations, such as Ruthie's perspective on her whirlwind romance with Will, and Alex's account of his marriage to the manipulative Cassie, lacked depth. The characters felt one-dimensional, lacking the necessary development to elicit empathy or understanding. Will's robotic demeanor and the absence of emotional reactions from him made it difficult to comprehend his motivations. Similarly, Cassie's portrayal as a B-list movie villainess lacked nuance, reducing her character to a stereotypical archetype. I found it challenging to fully connect with these characters due to the limited insights provided.
Furthermore, the pacing in the second half of the book became a stumbling block to my reading experience. While the opening was gripping and effectively set the stage, with the characters introduced amidst a claustrophobic and isolated environment, the momentum faltered as the story progressed. Repetitive moments and a dragging pace diminished the suspense and created moments of frustration. I found myself yearning for a tighter narrative and wished for a reduction in the book's length by 20-30 pages to maintain a more engaging and heart-throbbing mystery.
In the end, I have decided to give the book 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4 for its intriguing and promising Agatha Christie-esque whodunnit mystery concept and well-executed wrap-up.

Twelve years ago, Emily Hunt vanished on the very night she graduated from college. Found floating in a river not far from campus, her death was quickly ruled a murder and a police investigation got underway. As they narrowed down the potential suspect pool, all eyes landed on an odd student named Brendan Clarke thanks to a damning text that he’d sent to Emily not long before her death. But before he could be proven innocent or guilty, Brendan committed suicide by jumping into the same river where Emily’s body was found. Sure that the desperate move was an act of guilt, the police closed the case, leaving everyone with no option but to move on.
A dozen years later, however, Emily’s closest friends have gathered together on a remote island in Maine to celebrate the engagement of one of their own. The posh home stands on a tiny spit of land that is only connected to the mainland during low tide. At all other times, they’ll be cut off from civilization, but surely the only thing they’ll have to worry about is imbibing a little too much or whether they’ll like the new bride-to-be. After all, nothing else could possibly happen to this tight knit group of friends who have already lived through the worst that life can dish out.
That is, however, until events start to unravel. A car that shouldn’t be there is found in the garage. In its trunk, is the body of a dead man along with a note demanding that it’s time for them to tell the truth. Compounding matters, a ferocious storm hits the tiny island, trapping the six supposed celebrants on its shores. This group of six has some terrible secrets—many of which they’ve been hiding for years. Trust isn’t exactly overflowing amongst the party, but in order to survive until morning, they’re going to have to depend on one another—whether they like it or not. Otherwise, the hunted will easily become prey.
Holy cow! From the unlikeable characters to the near constant flow of hair-raising suspense, The Engagement Party was nothing like I expected yet also filled with everything that I craved. A surprising mix of a non-graphic I Know What You Did Last Summer-esque thriller and a perfectly poised locked room mystery, I was pulled in deep right from the start. Needless to say, the fast-paced plot and whiplash-inducing twists kept my fingers flying through the pages, which didn’t stop until the very last word. I mean, there was even a *chef’s kiss* twist thrown in at the end—all of which was proof positive of a maestro behind the scenes.
I do have to say, though, that this one was very different from Kane’s prior books. Not that it was any less brilliant or jaw-dropping, but there was a definite slasher vibe that combined deftly with the top-notch game of cat-and-mouse. But with the atmospheric setting and unsettling mystery of who was behind the terrible events, I found myself utterly addicted to this unputdownable success. Even the mildly over-the-top feel of this storyline fit the bill to a tee and I couldn’t, for the life of me, get enough of the characters or plot.
Speaking of those characters, with multiple POVs who narrated in a round-robin type way, what could have been confusing was anything but. Instead, the storyline was written in a manner that actually felt much more like a single POV storyline, but allowed for a near omniscient perspective. And for this plot to be a hit, that was a definite must. After all, this longtime friend group had survived on nothing but secrets and lies for twelve years, so their individual perspectives merely helped to drive that fact home.
All said and done, Kane managed to blow me away yet again. This time, however, she impressed me by demonstrating her startling skill at crafting a brand new style to her storytelling that was both perfect for spooky season but also cut out for every other day of the year. Both spine-chilling and action-packed, all I know is that this would make one dynamite movie. So take it from me, if you’re looking to extend your Halloween reads for another month or so, The Engagement Party is right up your alley. Because, when you get right down to it, this adrenaline-fueled ride alongside some despicable characters is sure to grab ahold of you and never let go. Rating of 4.5 stars.

When a bunch of college friends… or frenemies reunite for an engagement party..🥂… the guests are less than thrilled…😬…you see… they have a secret 🤫… and when a dead body in a trunk appears… well they know that there is a killer among them… and their secret 🤫 just might not be safe… 🤐

I was decently invested in this book, and then the author just had to go in and throw OTTM--One twist too many--at the end. It would have been perfectly acceptable to end it where it ends in the first place, but to me it was just way too much to throw in the epilogue twist.
This isn't high literature here. It's a locked room style mystery--characters with a shady situation in their past are gathered on an island with limited access. A storm rolls in and they are stranded. The power goes out. They find a dead body. They begin to realize that one of their group must be responsible--but who and will what they have been hiding for so many years come to light?
I have read quite a few similarly set/themed books lately and they are all kind of running together in my head at this point. There's nothing particularly memorable about this one that will make it stand out in my mind after a bit of time goes by.
I was entertained while reading it, but it was ultimately forgettable. I know lots of people liked it more than I did, so pick it up and come to your own conclusion if the plot sounds interesting.

2.0 stars— I consider myself a big Darby Kane fan because I really enjoyed her previous two books and gave them high ratings. However, I did not feel that “The Engagement Party’ was at the same level as her previous two books. The main reason I didn’t enjoy this book quite as much was the lack of character development. “The Engagement Party” is told from multiple point of views which (considering the convoluted plot) kept me from developing any strong attachments to any particular character. The story begins with Mitch being invited to the engagement party of one of his old college friends. Mitch is hesitant to go because of an unnamed traumatic event that he and his friends don’t like to discuss but bonded them forever. He is finally talked into going by his close friend and romantic interest, Sierra. The party is being hosted on an isolated island where Alex and his friends are the sole inhabitants for the entire weekend. The book then slowly begins to unravel the awful secrets that bond the friends together. The plot is sort of scattershot with lies being told and random characters being introduced before the reader has a chance to understand the backstory. I definitely would have enjoyed the book more if I knew more about the secrets the friends held before introducing Dylan and his violent, vengeful acts into the plot. There was no time to learn about the characters or get invested in them before the major action begins. So much happens to so many people so quickly, I can’t say I cared much about either the characters or the resolution to the story. To me the whole book was just blah. Hopefully, Ms. Kane’s next book will be more like her first two rather than this one.

With a synopsis that states "And Then There Were None meets I Know What You Did Last Summer", I had high hopes for The Engagement Party and Darby Kane delivered! Plus, it has that trapped feeling that I love in books. An invitation to a private setting is nothing new in books. It’s a trope that is frequently used but I’m a sucker for it and enjoyed this tale of survival and revenge.
Twelve years ago, Emily Hunt's body was found after she went missing. Now, college friends have been invited to an event on a private island off the coast of Maine. Once there they find a body in a trunk with a note letting them all know that they need to tell the truth! Enter storm stage left... because there must be a storm if you are trapped on an island.
What is the truth?????
This was an engaging, gripping, shocking and well written book which kept me on my toes. The characters were not the most likeable bunch, but I was fully invested in finding out what would be their fate. I always love doing my own super sleuthing while reading. I loved the sense of unease in the book, the tension and mounting danger. This book was also atmospheric with the island and storm setting the stage.
I look forward to reading more of Darby Kane's books in the future.

Birds of a Feather.
There’s no shortage of despicable characters in this story so identifying any redeeming qualities will be as challenging as figuring out whodunnit.
If you’ll permit me another idiom, Liar Liar Pants on Fire would be appropriate too because of the inferno of accomplished defections, spins, and outright lies.
As a reader, you know something’s amiss but what? Does the veneer finally crack? I had my hopes from early on.
I’d thought a cast of six was rather small for a locked room, but wait, there’s more... AND a corpse pile up of the bloody kind.
I don’t normally read locked room thrillers - so scary - but figured I’d take a chance since this author is an almost auto request for me.

I completely devoured this propulsive thriller in less than 24 hours! I'm a huge fan of Darby Kane and I knew this one would be great. I had so much fun playing detective and trying to figure out the whodunit parts before it was revealed. This fast-paced, locked room mystery had me on the edge of my seat with its game of cat and mouse.

I can’t with this book. If you like those campy teen slasher movies, then you would probably like this. Except these are adults in their thirties. Eye roll. An invite to an en engagement party on a secluded island, & from the minute they step foot on it, bodies start showing up. All to get answers to why one of their friends died 12 years ago. It was so out there that I had trouble liking any of this. These people were so stupid. Their actions were stupid. The way things went during this time on the island were stupid. Clearly I didn’t like this book. Sometimes theses kind of books are entertaining & fun to read, but this one didn’t do it for me.

Emily and Brendan were found dead 12 years ago after college graduation. Present day Mitch and his friend Sierra are going to an island to celebrate a college friend’s engagement. Secrets and lies from the past are revealed and mayhem occurs.
This was a thrilling read that had me quickly flipping through the pages. It had many interesting characters. Thanks NetGalley and William Morrow for this ARC that will be released December 5, 2023!

Talk about a book full of unlikeable characters and unreliable narrators! A group of friends (and I use that term very lightly) that join each other on a small island to celebrate one of their engagements soon find themselves in a hellish game of manipulation and psychological warfare. Violence, secrets, and twists abound.
The story was completely ridiculous yet at the same time entertaining. It seemed like almost every chapter something unhinged happened. It was a crazy ride, almost borderline silly in plot, but I found it oddly enjoyable.

I really had the most difficult time telling these characters apart. And then there kept being new characters added that I didn’t need or want. It was around 400 pages but it was about 100 pages too long. I don’t have many positive things to say about this one, so I’m just going to not say anything else. I wouldn’t recommend.

First off, author Darby Kane, is a fairly new author with 4 published books on her desk (under her belt). This is also the first book of this author I’ve read. One being this unbelievably twisted tale of revenge after loss of a loved one. The means that went into keeping the secret of what actually happened quiet and the extraordinarily intricate plotting that went into getting revenge for that loss is mind blowing. I am only giving this 4.5 as I did, at one point, feel as though the book was dragging out and dragging on. That was just how I felt but still believe it’s worth the time to read. I will be checking out her other works!

Very few authors have the gift of distinguishing characters if there are many in a book. I think Ms. Kane missed the mark here, I kept mixing up Will and Alex! After a while I just didn't care anymore.
The book started decent and then just devolved. A group of friends hiding a secret go to a secluded island to celebrate an engagement party (Note to self, don't ever go to a secluded place with your group of friend if you all know you all did something horrendous years ago; it never ends well!)
So you know the rest, people start dying and secrets start getting revealed.
Solid 3 stars!

I love love love locked-room mysteries! So when I read the premise of this book and saw the comparisons made to Agatha Christie’s AND THEN THEY WERE NONE, I knew I just had to get my hands on THE ENGAGEMENT PARTY! And I’m so glad I did!
This was my first book from Darby Kane and I really enjoyed it! The storyline was captivating and kept me reading well into the night. The escalating suspense propelled the book forward at lightening speed and kept the reader guessing until the very end. The characters, for the most part, were well developed, especially one of our main protagonists, Sierra. Her evolving relationship with Mitch was an intriguing part of the narrative. However, not all of the characters were likable— in fact, some were quite despicable. But each added something unique to the storyline and helped progress plot points.
The isolated setting with a raging storm as the backdrop added to the eeriness and mystery of the story. There was a claustrophobic feel emanating from the characters as it became clear there was something or someone keeping them from leaving the island. And just when you think you have all of the answers, think again! In this clever thriller by Darby Kane, nothing is as it first seems, long buried secrets define friendships, and reliable narrators are few and far between. What you are left with is a fun, twisty, suspenseful read, perfect for mystery lovers and night owls alike!

A locked room mystery turns into a locked room island. Four college friends reconnect several years after college for an engagement party at a remote island with only one way in. And one way way out.
While in college, their lives were changed forever when one of their group was found murdered. They vowed never to speak of it again, but it becomes obvious someone is after the truth when suspicious dreadful things start happening on the island.
I loved the story telling of multi (3) POVs interspersed with book notes and news articles.
The first half of the book was a fantastic mystery while the second half was an intense action packed who done it. It was an edge of your seat, nail-biting thriller. And that ending? Chef's kiss🧑🍳😘 (not quite the emoji I need)

The Engagement Party is a "locked room mystery" that takes place on an isolated island in Maine. A group of college friends gather to celebrate Will's engagement with Ruthie. Sierra is new to the group and only attends to support Mitch. She soon finds not only do these friends share dark secrets but also they are all lying to each other. In addition to all the lies and betrayals, someone else is on the island - someone who wants the group to pay for a past death.
I did not overly enjoy this book. The start was exciting and I read the first quarter of the book quite quickly. However, it then began to drag. The story is told through multiple POVs; however, none of them were engaging. I honestly didn't like any of the characters (maybe Mitch). The "unknown" person on the island did not add to the story; rather, that character just made the plot confusing. Ruthie was another character that was more confusing than anything and didn't really add to the story. The end was very predictable, which made the latter half of the book drag even more. Finally, the whole explanation of what happened in the past did not make sense. It was an unsatisfying ending. A locked room mystery on a remote island off the coast of Maine. Add to that a storm and a killer out for revenge and you have one crazy, wild page turner from Darby Kane. I binged this book in an afternoon, hooked by the story and the cast of highly unlikeable characters. It did not disappoint. I do believe this is my new favourite book by this author.

I thought this book was OK, but it was often repetitive and dragged a bit, especially towards the end. The story is a locked-room type mystery, where a group of friends is invited to a secluded island for an engagement party for one of their group to a newcomer. All of these people were friends with Emily, who died 12 years ago under mysterious circumstances, and it soon becomes obvious that someone is trying to avenge her death and that multiple people know more than they are letting on.
There was a lot of gruesome killing in this book, which was fun- it had a bit of a 1980's slasher vibe. However, with so many unreliable (and frankly, unlikable) characters, it started getting confusing around what secrets they were all keeping and who is hiding what from everyone else. When the villain was revealed, I couldn't help but think that they went to way too much trouble to get what they wanted. I also felt like the end of the book dragged, when you knew who the villain was but then there was more action and I was just ready for it to be over.
Overall, kind of a fun read but wasn't as engaging as expected I am clearly in the minority when I see the other ratings though, so you may want to give it a shot. To be honest, I found the other books by this author gave me a similar vibe, with unrealistic decision-making and parts that dragged, so perhaps she just isn't the author for me. This one was a bit difficult to review. While I enjoyed the book and did want to see it through to the end, it didn’t meet my expectations. “Locked room” thrillers need to be done a certain way or else they become boring and repetitive in that closed setting. The twist didn’t have a shocking factor and there was not much character backstory besides the little bits sprinkled in here and there. I would say it’s a decent read but not one that I’m crazy about.

When I started this story, all I could think of was how silly the adults were acting. A group of whiny complaining grownups stuck on an island was not what I was hoping to read!

I loved this. I was really invested in everyone right from the start. A twisty exciting tale with lots of lies and secrets. While I have read a ton of trapped on an island with a killer on the loose novels with no way out, that make me roll my eyes, this felt different and gave me “I know what you did last summer” vibes which was a pivotal movie in my teens, so it brought me back to that for a bit. Surprise ending as well that I didn’t really see coming. While the character of Cassie annoyed the hell out of me, there seems there always has to be one, so take it for what it’s worth. Everyone else was great. Loving all of Kanes works so far.

“Time to tell the truth”
The Engagement Party by Darby Kane was just the thriller I needed to get me out of this slump I’ve been in.
Kane has crafted a fast paced story with alternating POVs.
I loved how she did the different POVs of Sierra, Ruthie and Alex. The three characters telling their side of the story was intriguing and kept me turning those short chapters as quickly as I could. I liked that it allowed me to get everyone’s viewpoints.
With complex characters (some likable and others not so much), all the suspense and an incredibly faced paced plot, this was a quick read that kept me guessing with each chapter.
The writing is excellent and the short chapters made it fly by in no time.

As these old college friends come to a secluded island in honor of their old friend and his engagement things take a very deadly turn and fast!
I loved how quickly things started to go downhill once they arrived on the island.
Kane didn’t hold any punches and it was one thing right after another.

This is a great novel about college friends that meet up 12 years after graduation for an engagement party weekend. The location is a private island in Maine where they can park and take golf carts over to the island before the high tide.
The twists and turns never stop even going until the very end. A must read for mystery, thriller, suspense lovers.

My heart was racing out of my chest! I was on the edge of my seat and could not devour it fast enough. I am a major fan of locked room/isolated island murder mystery and this one was amazing.
Every thriller fan needs to have this on their TBR! If you are fans of The Glass Onion, One of the Girls, and The Only Survivors, you are going to love this book!

Told from three POV’s and some “Book Notes” chapters, we get the perfect locked room thriller atmosphere of college friends on a deserted island in a storm. Oh and did I forget to mention-a killer on the loose.
Even though this trope sounds familiar, it was unique in its own way. I thought the different POVs helped to keep me guessing and never quite sure who to believe. I have read all of Kane’s novels and this one was just as good as the rest because she has such a great job of keeping the reader engaged.
I absolutely loved the way this one ended! It was a whirlwind of twist after twist and it was just so fun!
