2.75 ⭐️ So this was a lot, but not great….. beware, there are spoilers.
We meet them as kids, 7-ish and 13-ish, which was fun. Roxilana is an orphan, as her family was killed during a raid by the Romans. Memnon is a young Sarmatian warrior on the other side of the world.
Mysteriously, they have a mental connection and communicate through their minds. Then it quickly became cringe….
So years later, Roxilana is 18 and she’s forced to marry some dude… her guardian basically sold her off.
And then we’re doing the classic “MMC crashes her wedding” trope, because Memnon storms in and saves the day.
He already declared his love a few years back, when he was just a boy, so on this day he marries her himself.
So they travel to his homeland or whatever. Not much happens. They have sex. She, as a virgin, doesn’t understand much of what is happening, and he, being a virgin himself, somehow knows it all. 🤨 Anyway, they discover sex and go at it like rabbits, as one does when newlyweds.
Roxilana becomes a queen, learns more about her powers, we meet Ferox, her panther, Memnon’s family and culture, and learn that he is a powerful sorcerer. She discovers that he has an obsession with power and violence.
A couple of boring chapters later, we continue, and some interesting characters and development appear. But as this was supposed to be a novella, the author thought, “Let’s milk this out and make it a 500+ page extension.”
Mind you, this is a time when multiple wives are allowed and producing heirs is very important, so obviously there is some drama…
Some wars are fought, some places are conquered, and we finally come to the conclusion of it all…
So, the last 30% is where some shit finally starts happening that is worth mentioning.
Roxilana suffers a miscarriage, and later she is killed by Roman soldiers during a battle. Memnon refuses to accept her death, uses forbidden magic to bring her back to life, and pays a price for it.
Then we have the betrayal of Eislyn and Zosines, and Memnon is cursed (how that happens, who knows). So, to protect Memnon, Roxilana erases all memories of Memnon from the world, including her own memories of him, and dies.
This is all thanks to Eislyn, who wanted Memnon all to herself, and Zosines, who wanted Roxilana as his seventh wife… because one spouse is clearly never enough. Greedy little things.
So, 2,000 years later… enter book 1.
All in all, not a great book, but I guess this was the necessary setup for book 3… which, thankfully, is the one I’m actually excited for…
