This is their last chance. After nine loveless lives and nine horrible deaths, Kalyss must save Dreux from his stone prison--or pass without him into an empty eternity.
When two strangers violently enter her life, Kalyss's gift awakens--along with the memory of her past lives--and she must learn who she can trust in order to break the cycle of hatred and betrayal that has held them captive for centuries. For only then can she free Dreux from his prison of stone.
But will Kalyss be strong enough, now that the last chance has arrived--now that she must face not only the pain of this life, but of all her lives before?

These two people meet and spend one night--No, not even a whole night...It was like 4 hours together and for the next THOUSAND years the chick sacrifices life after life, getting brutally murdered in each, to return to him.
I know I am cynical so I'll let the 'love at first sight/fornication' thing pass, but after about the 9th time don't you think you would at least check out eharmony?
And if I were the dude, after spending 1,000 years trapped in stone and coming back to life to your 'soul mate' having too many commitment issues to stop bitching at you for an hour, I would be exasperated to say the least. I get it, he was being supportive and the polar opposite of her abusive ex, but at some point you think he would say fuck it,
and check out eharmony.
Let me end by saying that I enjoyed the concept and the side characters a lot. So much, I wish it had only been about them, but I can't even look forward to future books that feature them because I know I'll be setting myself up for a let down.
Despite that, It wasn't so bad I wont read the next book.
This book was really good. This is about Kalyss and Dreux. They were put under a curse in the year of 1075AD by a very vindictive woman who uses her son to do her dirty work. This curse puts Dreux in stasis or rock hard like a gargoyle for 1 thousand years. Kalyss is doomed to die every hundred years if she does not find him, Dreux, and to break the curse she has to kiss him. They had been married for all of 1 night when Dreux was cursed and Kalyss was killed for the 1st time. In the book it goes back and forth between the times so you can get the whole picture of what happened in 1075AD and in todays time. Kalyss has a protector and so does Dreux. It kept me riveted the whole book to see what happens. Highly recommend.
Picked this up for 4 bucks at Kmart. Great bargain.
Many things that should have bugged me didn't and I'm left sad that the series is only two books long.
This book has curses, angels, fallen angels, nephlim and secret abilities that are thought out which is always awesome (imo).
It also has insta-love, reincarnation, betrayal, guilt, and an accusing heroine. That's less awesome, and difficult to redeem.
Dreux and Kaylss (she had a different name back then but I'm gonna go with her current incarnation's name for ease) have one night at best together before events cause them to be separated. While I liked them together I wouldn't say that they had enough of a connection for love. They certainly connected Dreux wanting a loving relationship and Kaylss wanting happiness in their marriage.
But all they got time for was Kaylss to trust Dreux. Before Kai, Dreux's half-brother attacked and Geoffrey betrayed them taking Kaylss away.
Dreux is transformed into a granite statue. In the intervening years between 1075 and 2004 Kaylss is reincarnated eight times. In each lifetime, together with Geoffrey (who is nigh-immortal as he resurrects) she attempts to free Dreux from the statue, only to be killed by Kai.
In 2004 Kaylss is running a dojo with her friend Alex and Geoffrey tries to get her away as Kai is coming to get her.
Geoffrey dies, Alex seems to die. Kaylss uses Geoffrey's car and her memory power to go to Geoffrey's house and finds Dreux's statue. Then next morning in a small moment of insanity kissing the statue *surprise* frees Dreux.
Now Kai wants to kill Dreux, Dreux wants to kill Kai and resume his and Kaylss' marriage. Kai has Alex and Geoffrey as hostages and is leveraging their safety and Kaylss' for Dreux.
Kai is a very complex villain he has genuine reasons to want Dreux dead . But at the same time he's eerily scientific and logical. He has that psychopathic way of blaming others for his actions.
Dreux is charming and lovely. He hedges his whole future on Kaylss, and for a long time that doesn't seem like a good prospect. He has a good heart and wants to make Kaylss happy, he wants to fit in to the twenty-first century and Kaylss' life.
Kaylss is a character that I had mixed emotions about. She flip flops around on whether she wants to be with Dreux or not. This stems from a trauma involving her abusive ex-husband who nearly killed her four years ago. She has rebuilt her life and become a strong person and she really finds it difficult to reconcile the idea of love and partnership with being a strong individual. Their is a moment where Kaylss utterly rejects Dreux after reliving the attack. At first I was annoyed, I understood logically her trauma but not emotionally - I wanted her to just get over it. But Hansen made me change my mind, I still wanted her to get over it, but I really understood why Kaylss felt betrayed.
Geoffrey and Alex don't get much screen time but they really won me over in that part, enough that I'm sad Alex has a book, Cursed, and Geoffrey doesn't (so far). I will definitely read Cursed if I can find a copy.
Draven and Silas, are two character that aren't involved directly in the story and yet I was intrigued and want to know more.
What I liked about the reincarnation was that while Kaylss' past lives were easily recognisable as her, her name was different. I also liked that her ability was different yet it still told her the same thing (the pasts of other people).
I forgive the insta-love, because by the time you realise that Dreux and Kaylss had only one night in the past they're nearly in real love in the present. The betrayal, guilt and accusations are handled deftly in a way that I salute.
If Miss Hansen had written more that one other book and that had been less that four years ago I'd look forward to many more books.
I liked this one a lot, and I'm not usually wild about reincarnation stories. This one has a twist, though. The hero's been trapped in stone, but awake and aware of everything the whole time. The heroine must free him, but every time she gets close, the villain --who is the hero's half-brother-- shows up and kills her. And every time, she's born in a new body and has to try again. She has a sidekick, who gets killed a lot and comes back, but he just recovers from his death, rather than having to be reincarnated. The villain seems to have this same ability. It's all because of the curse. If the heroine doesn't save her hero this time, then it's all over. Bad stuff will happen, worse than what's been going on. This is a wonderful story, full of angst and hope and action and redemption and forgiveness and...well, just really good stuff. I liked it a lot.
This was a short story/novella gone on way too long. Also, I'm really sick of the abused gal who ever so bravely learns to open up and love and f**k like a champ. To be fair, the concept behind this novel was really cool. The execution was a bit confusing, jumping about within 1000 years from different reincarnations and meetings, seemingly without reason for the scattered chronology. If the female protagonist had been more interesting and the story better developed and organized, it would have been an excellent book. It's this author's first novel, so I'll give her another chance, see how she develops her craft.
Lalyss's keep was overtaken by the King's overlord and she was forced to marry him. The first day she met Dreux he had killed numerous persons in her village and she's terrified he's going to kill her too. They spend one night together (to consummate the marriage) before all hell breaks loose again, and again, and again.
I had a very hard time getting into this book as it was just plain boring. It finally picks up about 3/4 of the way through and ends strong. Great conclusion to this book but the storyline obviously continues. I'm not sure if I can stomach another 200+ boring pages in book 2. But this is Alex's story so I'm going to try, especially since I already purchased it.
Ok. Let me start by saying it took me months to get past the first 7ish chapters because they were brutally boring. But after that initial slow start, I have to say I fell in love. I honestly did. No, I don't particularly like that they spent 10 lifetimes to try and get back what they had for HOURS, but they were soul mates and just HAD to be together. What's wrong with that? To each his own. This book is beautifully written and every word on the page has a meaning and relates to the story. I hate reading books where there are random things that don't add to the story whatsoever. I will definitely be recommending this book to everyone I know.
4.5 stars. I would, have given 5, but the beginning was pretty slow and the story development was a little late. Once the story got going, it was really great. I got sucked in and could not put the book down.
I was confused when reading the prologue, but kept reading hoping that things would clear up in the main story. Read another 20 pages and things didn't get any more clear and I didn't care for what I was reading either. In the end this one just wasn't for me.
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE THIS BOOK!!! XDXD After I read it, I went looking to see if Ms. Hansen had written any other books, and this was the only one I found. T-T I was -- AM -- very sad about this.
This one is just to confusing, present day, long ago, longer ago. People are alive no wait they are dead. By the time I got to page 50 I decided I did not care.
