Space Ark: The Lost Colony

Rate this book
Humanity once set out to colonize the stars, but an era of warfare brought the age of exploration to an end. Now, with the war over, humanity is set to resume sending out colonies with their superfluous citizens.

And most superfluous of all are the genetically modified soldiers who were created to fight a war that is now over, like Rylock Thrak. Rylock is a war hero, but in the new age of peace that isn’t considered a virtue, and starting a new life on a far flung world to help build a new society is more appealing to him than a life of manual labor on Earth.

As they depart Earth, the passengers of the Ark ship are hopeful of a new life on an idyllic world, but the reality of space colonization is anything but a utopian paradise.

And in this “age of peace”, Rylock may be the only man capable of ensuring the colony’s survival against a harsh and unforgiving galaxy.

Giant holes in story line

The earth has just fought an interstellar war and the soldiers are being furloughed. For an interstellar war to be fought FTL ships must be possible. Yet in the story the earth is sending out colony ships that don’t have FTL ships. The ships are huge that would cost billions if not trillions to build for a 6 hundred year one way journey! Not credible. If the earth had FTL why wasn’t it using the technology for the colony ships? Later in the story the stranded colonist defeat an alien military detachment with a FTL ship. The colonists use explosives twice inside the ship. ??? Nobody in their right mind would used explosives to disable a communication subsystem. How about a pair of wire cutters or a screwdriver? A working star ship would be a very valuable asset to have. Why destroy it with explosives?

Pretty good!

Overall, an entertaining read. Fun characters, great action, and plot. Believable bad guys add spice to the mix. Only criticism is the use of eff bombs. They don't enhance the story or make the good guys tougher. Rather than the effs, just improve your descriptors.
