One girl's artificial conception, devolves into a high-stakes game of deception...
Meet Izzy Falman...
...a seemingly average teen whose life is anything but ordinary. Engineered in a synthetic womb by a rogue AI and stolen by one of the scientists who created her, Izzy is unaware of her groundbreaking origins...or the extraordinary abilities woven into her DNA.
Izzy leads a sheltered life with those she believes are her eccentric, but loving parents. That is, until they are brutally murdered, and Izzy is reclaimed by the insidious organization eager to have their project back. Unlocking the secrets embedded in her DNA is their primary objective, and they will use any means to do so. When she inadvertently unleashes her latent abilities, Izzy finds they just may be her key to freedom.
Thrust into a world of scandal and deception at the highest levels, Izzy begins to uncover a truth much bigger than she ever imagined. As she grapples with her emerging abilities, she wrestles to define her true identity as her fight to survive becomes a quest to reclaim her life, discover her purpose, and determine who she will be.
I love to read, but I don’t really like Sci-Fi. I’ll admit though, this book reminded me that I should be open to genres I don’t typically gravitate towards. From not just chapter one or page one, but from the very first paragraph I was intrigued and had to keep reading on. The best thing about books is when you feel like you are in them, and Codeborn does just that. J. L. Hoyt writes with gripping detail, leaving you with suspense each chapter, introducing you to a character you have so many questions about and grow to be quite invested in. Izzy’s teenage life is a mystery that even she’s trying to figure out. What’s going on with her mind and body? Who really are the people from her past? Who is she? Geared towards the YA audience, it’s a read that adults beyond their teens will also enjoy… including me. Now I just need the second book to come out!!
Really fun read! Moves right along with lots of plot twists and turns. I love to read sci fi and this book has lots of brave new world of the computer questions woven into the narrative that give it an extra depth of interest. Taking you beyond the easy peasy super hero bitten by a radioactive spider BOOM you have super powers trope. Izzy is an endearing protagonist. Fierce, strong, loyal, kind, funny and so much every teenage girl you have ever met or been. Girl Power dished up in an imaginative, multi-faceted (no spoilers, but spies, homeschoolers, long haul truckers, illicit boxing, librarians and tech bros make a rich mix) world will hold your interest from start to finish.
I was sucked into Codeborn from the very beginning and had a difficult time putting it down. Izzy is a truly unique teen who was grown by the government in an external womb, but the government's AI computer took over, and with them no longer in control, the AI altered what it wanted her to be. Izzy ends up having exceptional powers but doesn't quite understand how to use them. She makes an unlikely friend while on the run, and I loved how close they became and the dialogue between them. There are many characters from the 'Agency' that is after her, some I love to hate and then there is Daemon. I really hope there is more of him in the next book as his character is brilliant and he always had me chuckling. While this book is YA, I enjoyed it immensely. I need book two, like yesterday. Highly recommend!
AI and science fiction is definitely not my genre. I have never read a book about sci fi but I was intrigued by the beautiful cover and a friend read it and said it was a good read. I was left captivated! What happened to Ian? what is lucinda planning? What are the extend of Izzy's powers? WHAT DID HER PARENTS LEAVE HER? I mean it wasn't enough. We need book 2!
A Thrilling Sci-Fi Adventure J.L. Hoyt is a powerful new voice in YA science fiction. Codeborn blends cutting-edge science fiction with themes of love, belonging, self-identity, and resilience. J.L. Hoyt weaves tension and deception into every chapter, crafting a suspenseful narrative that leaves you guessing what happens next. A great read for teens and adults.
There is nothing artificial about J.L. Hoyt’s imagination. Codeborn proves that page after page in this intense read. She introduces us to, Izzy, a teen who was altered with AI in the womb.
Codeborn is full of intrigue as Izzy comes to realize the truth to who she is and the abilities she has. Izzy is very naive even though she is filled with intelligence beyond her age or human capabilities.
Twists and turns take us on the journey with her as she grows personally in the height of grave circumstances. She forms very real relationships with unlikely characters and learns the hard way how to handle very human emotions and situations. From Izzy’s memory this quote regarding colored sunglasses reflects the intensity of life lessons. “You don’t see the truth with any of those glasses on because they are too busy looking through a color that isn’t what’s really there. You have to take off the glasses by being aware of what is happening inside of you and how that is shaping the way you look at the world and the people in it.”
Thank you, J.L. Hoyt for an amazingly unique sci-fi read. I can’t wait for the next book.
