Apocalypse in Pieces

Rate this book
If you enjoyed Mongol Moon and A Dance of Devils but were left with the questions, such as “What is happening in the rest of the United States?” or “heck, what’s happening in the rest of the world?” Apocalypse in Pieces, Volume 1 has the answers.

In the United States, members of a Louisiana VFW fight back, and an Illinois gun shop employee overcomes personal loss to find a purpose. In the hollers of West Virginia, a cagey man holds a secret to an upstate New York nuclear facility, while a hunter becomes the hunted in Washington state. Disabled veterans spring a surprise in South Carolina, and in the mountains of Wyoming, a rustic cabin holds more than it seems.

We peek behind the De-Militarized Zone in North Korea and travel to a US embassy under siege in West Africa. In the frozen wastes of Antarctica, the Warlock initiates his revenge on the Chinese, and in Eastern South Africa, a modern-day battle of Rorke’s Drift plays out with deadly consequence.

The Mongol Moon world returns with new stories told, and more will come in Volume 2. Some of the tales link into the main story at certain spots, but I won’t tell you where—discover it for yourself in the Apocalypse in Pieces, Volume 1.

Mark Sibley is a corporate crisis manager and war gamer. He’s developed and facilitated over a hundred war games for various organizations over the years and managed as many real-world crises for those organizations. This experience, along with a life-long dream of writing a novel, provided him fertile ground for pulling together all the aspects of this story and developing them into what became Mongol Moon. If you tell a war gamer that a particular bad thing can’t happen, that war gamer will come up with a plausible scenario to prove you wrong...eventually.

He is a life-long Virginian and lives in the Commonwealth with his wife, three kids, and current pack of female terriers, two Boston Terriers, Izzy (the Alpha) and Dobby (the one without a brain), and the ever-ferocious Chewie the Wookie, a five-pound Yorkshire Terrier with one fang. At any given time, there is also a foster dog at the house, rounding out their pack.

Apocalypse in Pieces is, without a doubt, one of the finest collections of short stories I’ve read since H.P. Lovecraft.

Mark’s writing is as superb as ever, but what truly stands out is the incredible roster of talented authors he brought in to collaborate on the 'Mongol Moon' setting.

From the first page to the last, each story has its own unique charm. Whether it’s the Hillbilly Nurse, the Warlock, or the Embassy in Africa, every tale will leave you craving more.

A fun collection of short stories in the Mongol Moon world.

As a South African, I was pleasantly surprised that one story was set in South Africa, but a factual error (a Ratel has six wheels, not four) and poor pronunciation on the narrator's part were disappointing.
