Very much a guide that's a product of its time - not that this is a bad thing. In fact, it's a real treasure trove of a particular time in history, at least in regards to Silent Hill archival stuff - which, I recognize, may be a niche only I am interested in. There are notes like the "Abstract Daddy" being called the "Doorman", for instance, and the actual requirements for a Ten Star Ranking are incorrect in this guide. There is also much less mechanical information regarding enemy types and damage output as in the Silent Hill 3 & 4: The Room guides.
The guide definitely stands out as a product of the early 2000s as well - the haphazard image layout, the way that the images of the monsters take up most of the page in what feels like an attempt to shock, almost burying some of the text; they contribute somehow perfectly to the experience of playing the game on a quiet evening, and reading the guide by just the low light of the television.
I'd already played Silent Hill 2 several times before I picked up the guide, and as such the chances of it being labelled a "weird purchase" by whoever is reading this review is probably pretty high. And it's probably pretty accurate, too. But still, I love it, despite its inaccuracies or shortcomings. For those who are interested in the history of Silent Hill 2, or who want to get in touch with a form of guide-writing that has long since fallen by the wayside, such a guide is a marvelous piece to have on the shelf.
