✨2025 Feathered Quill Award Finalist - Best Memoir✨

For fans of Jon Krakauer's Into the Wild and Anthony Bourdain's World Travel, the thrilling tale of one man's epic quest for meaning, love, and a search for self through nearly 100 countries.

"Jet Lag Junkie is an adrenaline shot straight to the soul!" - Fred, Advanced Reader Review

Jeff, an overweight and insecure college student on the verge of dropping out, follows an uncontrollable urge ending up alone nearly 10,000 miles from home weeks after the 2004 Tsunami in South East Asia. Desperate to chase every experience possible, 'Jet Lag Junkie' is the vulnerable and raw journey behind one man's quest to find meaning, belonging, and love amidst an ever-changing backdrop of the most unique places on Earth.

Through deeply personal struggles with severe ADHD, imposter syndrome, anxiety, body image, and burnout, Jeff’s two-decade journey through nearly 100 countries reveals issues seldom discussed in a world that worships perfection and happiness on every screen. Brought to life through adventures from Mount Everest Base Camp in Nepal, being held at gunpoint in Malaysia, being impossibly lost in Bangladesh and detained by military police in Tajikistan, ‘Jet Lag Junkie’ inspires readers to experience life more deeply, and to get a bit uncomfortable while doing it.

Often humorous, always intimate, ‘Jet Lag Junkie’ reveals the compulsive search and painful struggles of growing up. Testing the limits of what Jeff is capable of, how much he is willing to sacrifice before stopping long enough to find someone to enjoy it all with?

"Jet Lag Junkie is one of those books that completely sweeps you up into the chaos and beauty of travel. It’s raw, unfiltered, and so full of life that I was laughing, cringing, and daydreaming all at the same time ." - Leah

Full disclosure: I provided some editorial assistance on this, but it was a total delight to work on. Jeff has amazing stories to tell, great insights to share, deep honesty, and a great sense of humor. I’m glad Jeff is now sharing his travel experiences with a wider audience.

Well written

Enjoyed reading of Jeff's travels around the world and his search for his place in it. Hopefully his earlier travels down the Oregon Trail helped him along the way.

Jet Lag Junkie by Jeff Johns is a captivating collection of stories chronicling the author’s first 20 years of adulthood, where he had no clear direction other than the desire to go. The book delves into his experiences growing up in a Mormon household, seeking the adventures his father never had the chance to pursue, dealing with ADHD, and ultimately finding ways to manage it over time. It dives into his drive to volunteer natural disasters, his own Mormon missionary trip that he got to choose, which satisfied his desire to help others. It also explores his lowest point, dealing with imposter syndrome and self esteem. Ultimately, as life does, he but found the right woman who shared his passion for adventure travel, their love story, and his eventual discovery of his place in the world, where he could live out his version of the American dream.

As a flight attendant and self-proclaimed jet lag junkie, I was immediately drawn to the book. The allure of travel is intoxicating, and like Jeff and his partner, I always have a personal trip planned. What intrigued me most were the parallels between our paths. I, too, found myself at the Brooks Institute of Photography in Ventura, CA, where a marketing professor once told me I would never achieve my dream of being a documentary photographer, paid to travel and tell other people’s love stories while working as a flight attendant. She was wrong. Enter social distancing in 2020 which opened up a whole new world of documenting adventure elopements in the wild. I’ve even written a book about it - for those interested! It’s called “Elope, A Modern Elopement Guide for the Free-Spirited and Adventurous by Sherry Martin Peters.

When I discovered that Jeff had also been a “Brookie,” I was even more hooked on his adventure storytelling. I had to look him up and see if our paths had ever crossed, only to realize that I’m a few years ahead of him in my own journey. Cheers to being a “Brookie” and following our adventurous dreams, Jeff!

Jet Lag Junkie kept me eager to hear about his next adventure, often wondering, “What direction will he take in this situation?” I felt like I grew up alongside him as he navigated adulthood through travel. The book begins with a travel mishap that ultimately transforms him into a seasoned, considerate, and kind traveler, seeking the same in others he meets. It’s a well-written travel-junkie memoir that leaves me wondering what adventures and countries Jeff will explore once his children are old enough to join him. Or will he put off his passion for travel adventure until the kids graduate to head off? (I doubt it!)

This is a great read for armchair travelers, but it’s especially exciting for those of us who are also jet lag junkies!

Today, due to technological advancements (and cheaper airfare), the world is within easier reach. Our neighborhoods have widened, and the world is now truly accessible.

For a young Jeff Johns, enthralled by National Geographic magazines in his grandmother’s bathroom, the world became a treasure map to explore. No one factor contributed to his future wanderlust, but more likely, a mix of them – His dad’s banner of country flags, each with a story to tell, those travel magazines, his sheltered childhood, his discomfort in his own skin, and even his ADHD. “Jet Lag Junkie: Unfiltered Tales of a Compulsive Wanderer” is a memoir that has a little dash of everything – adventure, travel, history, and discovery.

Candid and honest, Johns shares a raw and unfiltered account of the joys and perils that come with travel. He takes us on wondrous journies to Thailand, Bali, the Himalayas, Finland, Iceland, Peru, Morocco, New Zealand, and many other locations. Yet his adventures have not been without its hiccups – a notable high-stakes encounter in Malaysia, trouble traversing the chaotic streets of Bangladesh, and being almost detained in Tajikistan could attest to that! He seamlessly integrates his personal reflections with accounts of his travels, giving us a holistic peek at his experiences.

Johns writes as though he is talking to a friend, and this narrative style helps draw us into his personal adventures and reflections. His vivid descriptions make each place he’s visited come alive, igniting our senses and making us feel as though we’re right there with him. The episodic structure highlights each location to great advantage, and showcases a diverse range of specific messages and significant stories, helping us fully immerse ourselves in the experience.

In the book, which follows a roughly chronological order, Johns starts traveling as an escape. Restless, unsure, and insecure, it becomes a means of releasing himself from the confines of his environment and exploring the world at his fingertips. In the process, he discovers that home is more than a place where we rest our heads. It is the place where we find meaning, purpose, and belonging. His journey of discovery then becomes a personal one – the further he travels from home, the more he discovers who he is and what he is searching for.

Many of us can empathize with his plight. At some point, all of us have felt lost, uncomfortable in our own skins, and desperately seeking our place in this world. Like Jeff, being away from home makes us miss it even more. It makes us realize the depths by which we are defined by the places where we grew up, and how entrenched we are to the values we’ve lived.

The book also makes an obvious but profound point – traveling is an exercise in mindfulness. There’s no room to think of anything else. Navigating an unknown place requires focusing fully on the moment, and there is nothing more freeing. Tomorrow’s worries are of no concern. The beauty of nature and the unknown make us realize how inconsequential we and our problems are in the grand scheme of things.

The prospect of visiting a new place is akin to flipping to a new page in a book. Everything feels fresh and new – ready and waiting with bated breath for what comes next. Yet, life doesn’t afford us this sense of renewal each time, and perhaps this is one of the reasons “Jet Lag Junkie” is so appealing. We see each new country through the author’s eyes – uncharted, unexplored yet beckoning and waiting. Through Jeff Johns, we’re inspired to find joy in adversity and meaning in resilience.

Most readers of this book will remark upon how “brave” Johns and his wife are. It takes courage and tenacity to go off into the unknown and explore places most would never dare to go. “Jet Lag Junkie” resonates with the travelers within us, and it serves as a guiding light for other would-be travelers who wish to take the plunge and do the same.

Despite the extensive travel Johns has embarked on to find himself, it is astounding to realize that our own journeys of self-discovery are not all that different. His journey, though physical, has also been metaphorical. Each place he’s traveled to unlocks a different aspect of himself, much as each experience we have showcases a capability previously unknown. “Jet Lag Junkie” makes us realize that if we want to be transformed, the location doesn’t matter – what matters is our ability and readiness to embrace the adventure within us.

Jeff Johns’ “Jet Lag Junkie” not only commemorates the extent of his travels, it’s also a compelling love story. After traveling the breadth of the world, he’s found some measure of love, acceptance, contentment, and peace – between him and the many countries he’s explored, between him and his family, but most importantly, within himself.

‘Traveling is an exercise in mindfulness’ –myriad experiences, and lessons gained

Netherlands author Jeff Johns, a graduate of Brooks Institute of Photography, is a television producer and the co-creator of the adventure travel platform “What Doesn’t Suck.” He brings his experiences as a travel guide and visual journalist in this memoir of his own travels around the world. Written in the form of a journal, this ‘travelogue’ through many countries around the globe is both a fascinating descriptive source of other cultures and a meaningful guide to understanding Jeff’s challenges. As he states, ‘This book is for anyone who has ever headed off alone into the world and returned a different person or for anyone who dreams of doing so. I've tried to write as open and honestly as I can so you feel like we're friends, either catching up after years apart or just meeting for the first time on a bumpy bus ride from who-knows-where to the middle of nowhere.’

Reading this journal brings not only vivid descriptions of the beauties of other countries as a mesmerizing visitor’s guide, but adding the author’s personal conflicts and how those aspects of his travel alter his emotional growth serves as an inspiring resource for introspection. Jeff seamlessly integrates his personal reflections with accounts of his travels, giving us a holistic peek at his experiences. As he states, “Realizing that home, and belonging, are not only physical places but also feelings, is one of the most powerful lessons about life that travel has taught me” The result – an enriching reading experience. Highly recommended on many levels!

Jet Lag Junkie is a raw, immersive memoir that sweeps readers across nearly 100 countries while diving deep into the personal struggles that shape the author’s relentless pursuit of meaning, connection, and self discovery. Jeff Johns writes with unfiltered honesty, blending humor, vulnerability, and vivid storytelling into a narrative that is as thrilling as it is deeply human.

From Mount Everest Base Camp to being held at gunpoint in Malaysia, and from getting lost in Bangladesh to facing military police in Tajikistan, each adventure is more than just a travel tale it’s a lens into Jeff’s battles with severe ADHD, imposter syndrome, anxiety, depression, and body image struggles. What makes this memoir compelling is how these internal conflicts intersect with external experiences, showing readers that exploration of the world is inseparable from exploration of the self.

Johns captures the adrenaline and unpredictability of compulsive travel while confronting universal issues: the search for belonging, the weight of self doubt, and the quiet victories of resilience. Readers who enjoy Jon Krakauer’s Into the Wild or Anthony Bourdain’s travel memoirs will find Jet Lag Junkie both thrilling and profoundly moving. It’s a story that encourages us to embrace life’s discomforts, test our limits, and discover the joy hidden in vulnerability and adventure.

Jet Lag Junkie is an electrifying and deeply introspective memoir that captures the raw, unfiltered reality of a life driven by adventure and the search for meaning. Jeff Johns delivers a narrative that is both exhilarating and vulnerable, taking readers across the globe while simultaneously diving into the internal struggles that often go unseen behind a life of constant motion. The storytelling is immersive, balancing high stakes travel experiences with honest reflections on identity, purpose, and personal growth.

What makes this memoir particularly compelling is its ability to go beyond surface level adventure and explore the psychological realities of chasing a life less ordinary. The themes of anxiety, imposter syndrome, and the desire for belonging add depth and relatability, creating a powerful contrast between external exploration and internal conflict. The combination of humor, intensity, and introspection makes this book not only entertaining but also meaningful. It stands as a vivid reminder that the search for fulfillment is rarely linear, and that growth often comes from stepping into discomfort and embracing the unknown.

Jet Lag Junkie is a raw, funny, and unapologetically honest adventure travel memoir that reads like a late-night talk with a friend who’s lived a little too hard. This is such an entertaining read. Jeff Johns pulls you into a restless life fueled by cheap flights, questionable decisions, and a need to keep moving. The writing is vivid and unfiltered, with humor, self-awareness, and moments of surprising reflection. More than a travelogue, this book examines addiction to motion, experience, and escape, and the inherent costs. Perfect for armchair travelers who crave grit over gloss. Fun read.

this is one hell of a wild ride and takes the reader to many places in the world I (embarrassingly...) had never heard of. it goes beyond the "travel to find yourself" cliche and goes into deeply personal areas I found fascinating.

Jeff uses travel as a tool to share his revealing and heartwarming personal journey while inspiring others to explore the world.

an exciting and compelling read!

What a page-turner! What I loved most about this book is that while reading it, as a traveler myself, I was able to laugh and roll my eyes as I was very familiar with the encounters that Jeff navigated. It was so relatable! And it took me back to moments in my own travels where I was challenged, surprised and thrilled.

This account of the human travel and exploration experience is so raw, real and refreshing. I HIGHLY recommend taking this book on your next trip!

I did not like this book. It felt too long and I got bored. I didn’t like that he time jump one chapter for example 2018 then go back 2014. Just start at the beginning year by year
