He thought ghosting was just a dating term…

Daring lawyer Gabriel Vane has his dream job, a luxury high-rise apartment, a glamorous lover, and a massive scandal on his hands, possibly connected to said lover. To save his career, he needs to vanish—and what better place to hide than a dilapidated Victorian house in a sleepy town? He expects nosy neighbors and bad plumbing, but not a peppy ghost with anxiety issues.

Eternal incorporeal life has its perks, but after decades of binging sitcoms and lifestyle magazines, Ida Huxley wants proper, human company. Too bad her newest tenant—and the first person able to see her in over a century—is a work-obsessed, cynical snob.

In exchange for some peace and quiet, Gabriel agrees to fulfill the terms of a mysterious contract that will allow Ida to pass on and not end up a vengeful spirit. When sparks (and haunted objects) begin to fly, they have to either risk their carefully planned futures, figure out how to get sensual in two different planes of existence—or somehow bring Ida back to life.

This was a heartwarming and whimsical story.
I listened to the audiobook and I really enjoyed it. I love duet narration and the narrators did a wonderful job here. It honestly made the book better, I upped my rating because of it.

A successful lawyer Gabriel, on a fast track to become partner, gets involved in a scandal. Forced to lie low, he decides to dissappear to a small town, to live in an old Victorian house for the next six months. But the house comes with an unexpected guest. Ida, a woman who lived and died there, and it's now haunting it. Surprisingly, Gabriel can see her. To ensure himself some peace and quiet from a chatty ghost, he decides to help her cross over by fulfilling a mysterious contract. But the more time they spend together, the closer they get. And when they discover there's a contract that would bring her back to life too, the race to fulfil that one first is on. Will they succeed?

I really enjoyed the pace of the story and the setting. The small town was charming and I really liked the people we met there.

Ida was such a great character, sassy and such a light, even do she struggled. I was rooting for her since the beginning.
I didn't always liked Gabriel, some of his decisions were highly questionable.
I did liked them together though, even if they didn't really make sense. Their banter was the best thing.

The main issue is the last 20% of the book. I didn't like the direction it took at all. I honestly hated it, and I would've gave this a lower rating if it wasn't for the audiobook.
I did like the conclusion, I just wish we got there differently.

Overall, it was still a fun book and I'll always have a soft spot for stories with ghosts, they are my favourite.
This is my first encounter with the author and I would like to read more. I really liked her writing.

Thank you to NetGalley for the audiobook ARC

This was charming all the way through.
The writing was funny enough to get a few laughs while still not crossing the line to silly (which you'd be surprised to know happens a lot more than you might expect)
The highlight of the story was 100% Ida, she's lovely. I liked how despite being from the 1800s, she had so much inner development during all her time as a ghost, instead of having us believe that the man she just met was the one to help her understand herself after decades of being around (and around others).
It got a bit drawn out between the 50% & 75% mark, but it was overall a pretty fast read; you couldn't really notice time going by as this audiobook played.
Both narrators were great.

Just finished listening to the book, Ghostly. This book was released in 2024 but the audio is being released today. I absolutely adored this story!! This is about a lawyer named Gabriel, he gets suspended from his job for 6 months because of a scandal and is told to hide out until things cool down. He rents a house a couple hours away in a new town where no one knows him, and does everything he can to keep to himself. Except he's never alone, because his rental house has a ghost. Ida died over 130 years ago, and has been stuck in this house ever since. Most of the occupants of the house have been rather boring through the years, but Gabriel, he's different. He can see her! She finally has someone who can see her and she can talk to! She's so excited about this, but he is not excited in the slightest. They get off to a rocky start, but end up forming quite the bond. And when they find out about a contract where if fulfilled Ida can either peacefully pass on to the other side or can become human again, they both know what they gotta do. The quick wit and banter between these characters was so much fun. The storyline was very well done and flowed really well. This was such an enjoyable audiobook to listen to! I loved that there were 2 narrators, and they both were fantastic! They really brought the story to life. I loved every minute of this book! And I will definitely be looking for more by this author! 💜📚

Thank you to NetGalley and to the publisher for this audio ARC of Ghostly, in exchange for an honest review.

Fleeing his life in the city after a scandal, lawyer Gabriel Vane finds himself in a Victorian home in the small town of Buttons. There he meets Ida Huxley, a ghost haunting the house he’ll call home during his six month suspension. After interacting for a few days, Ida and Gabriel strike a deal to help Ida move on with the help of a supernatural contract.

First of all, there is OCD representation in the book, which I truly enjoyed. It was interesting to read about Ida’s struggle and how her thoughts influenced her actions before she died and as a ghost. I also enjoyed how their romance progressed, which seemed natural and not instalove from the start. I especially loved when Gabriel starts to warm up to her and even goes to the extent of borrowing books from the library for her to read. As for the audiobook, I thought it was extremely good. The voice actors were perfect and they were able to portray the characters’ emotions without becoming overly false.

Something I did not understand, despite his explanation, is why Gabriel would put his job on the line when he “loves” it and thinks of it as something very important in his life. Additionally, what was his deal with Wynona? Were they dating? Or simply seeking pleasure? That part wasn’t really clear to me, which made the more intimate scenes with Ida a bit uncomfortable.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the audiobook arc.

3.5 stars Super cute contemporary romance that happens to feature a ghostly heroine, in the vein of My Roommate is a Vampire. This one tries much harder to make her earthbound plight central to the plot, however, and as a bonus is set in a cute little Stars Hollow-like town.

With such a wholesome plot, I struggled a bit with the ickiness of his past relationship and professional ethics, however, and maybe the chemistry/romance could have been punched up even more. And it gets a little bogged down in the middle.

But I’m a sucker for humorous books and the banter here is really fun. Also making allowances for this being an indie romance—what’s here is very enjoyable, and I’d very very interested in seeing what happens if this author gets an editorial assist at some point.

Quick, fun little thing! This was purely fluff. My last book was awful and this was a decent enough palate cleanser so I'm not looking too into it. I'm just glad I still know how to read.

Excellent

This was a wonderfully written and imaginative story. The characters are so rea!, especially the ghost. I loved that she carried her OCD into the afterlife. The side characters were a fantastic mix that truly added to the plot.

This was the absolute perfect way to spend the day - fluffy, a little bittersweet, and a very nice ending. My only real complaint is that the 3rd act angst was a bit excessive for my tastes.

This was a strange book man…

Its about Ida a 130ish year old Ghost who haunts a home in buttons.
She kind of wallows around the home cause no one can see her. Until she meets Gabriel.
A famous lawyer who ended up in the tiny town of Buttons due to a scandal and to his shock can see ghosts! They both complete tasks to see if Ali can move on to the great beyond. Or maybe they don’t even want to…..

This book was cute but hella confusing. I love me some dual narration only I don’t quite love it when he is talking for half a chapter and then she cuts in for 4 minutes and then it goes back to him.
It just kinda gives me whiplash cause there isn’t any rime or reason for the constant switching mid chapter.
I hated their 3rd act breakup so much. He got .
What I do think deserves a trophy is Ida her OCD depiction. It was so realistic and well done. A great representation.

This is the audiobook I needed to come into my life! Ghostly's dual narrators nailed these smart and quirky characters. The witty banter just leapt off the pages and made me laugh out loud back and forth to work. I wouldn't say I am an overall fan of "paranormal romance", but this rom-com was something special... the sort of vibe check I remember from reading The Dead Romantics and Unlikely Animals. Loveable characters who grow as the tale unravels, a bit of a local mystery, and a romantic spark that transcends death all made for an utterly enjoyable read.

I loved this cute, cozy little ghost love story. The audio was so much fun to listen to and it made it that much more enjoyable. I loved that the chapters seamlessly bled into one another at times, switching characters in the middle of a moment. The story itself was fun and easy to get lost in while still keeping you engaged and wanting to know more.

Super cute! Heartwarming story.

I got the opportunity to listen to the audio. This was a easy listen something I could of finished in one day if I wasn't a busy mom lol. The narrators did a great job making the book more enjoyable and very entertaining.

This book gave me some Casper the Ghost vibes, if he was a woman and older... when Gabriel a successful lawyer gets involved with a client and causes problems he disappears to a small town and Moves into an old Victorian-style house. He wasn't expecting to come face-to-face with a very sassy ghost, haunting the house and wanting to talk his ear off.

Overall I loved the small-town feel and the connection the Ghost Ida and Gabriel had.

What a lighthearted and charming story! It provided the perfect respite from the thrillers and darker-themed books I’ve been reading.

"Ghostly" follows a predictable storyline, based on its cover and blurb. A cynical lawyer and a peppy ghost meet in a Victorian house, and events ensue that draw them closer, resulting in them falling in love and living happily ever after. Despite this, it was such a delightful read!

I enjoyed the witty banter, their funny interactions, and also the interesting side characters. Serzenta's writing style is easy to read and the pacing is perfect, the story kept me interested till the end.

The contract and rituals needed to bring Ida back to life added an interesting element to the story.

This book is perfect for readers of lighthearted, humorous, and heartwarming stories.

First and foremost, I decided to test the waters with the 'paranormal romance' genre with this book, and now I can boldly say that paranormal romance is just not right for me.

With that said, I don't want my dislike for the genre to spoil my review of this book. Ghostly was okay, but just not for me.

This review was originally published on Reedsy Discovery.

Gabriel Vane has everything he desires: he is a renowned lawyer about to win a huge case, he has a glamorous apartment and an even more glamorous lover, and the promotion he's worked so hard for is finally about to come his way. Until a massive scandal threatens to take everything away from him. So, Gabriel needs to lay low for a while, hiding out for just a few months in an old house in a sleepy town, with no plans to meet another living soul.

Except he didn't quite account for Ida, a sprightly Victorian ghost haunting the house, and even less for the fact that he might actually be the only one in over a century to be able to see and hear her. In order to regain his peace and quiet so he can work on getting his old life back, Gabriel agrees to help Ida fulfill the terms of a mysterious contract that will allow her to pass on peacefully to the Great Beyond. But when things take an unexpected turn, Gabriel and Ida might be forced to re-evaluate their plans...

Ghostly is a cute, warm and fuzzy read filled with humour and heart. Gabriel and Ida are charming protagonists, their banter and interactions delightful and their chemistry absolutely on point. Ida in particular is a fabulous main character, displaying great resolve and curiosity while working to confront the challenges facing her, and the mental health element is tactfully handled. The small-town setting with its colourful cast of inhabitants is also deeply endearing, and the side characters add some variety and extra sparkle to the novel.

The plot is highly predictable, even though the contract and the rituals connected to it added an element of novelty, yet this somehow works in the novel's favour instead of against it. The romance is constructed impeccably and in such a way that it feels believable despite the paranormal element, urging the reader to root for the main couple to make it against all odds, assisted by the fast-paced and engaging prose.

In a way, Ghostly is a "comfort blanket" book: pleasant, reassuring, and the perfect defence against the bleak outside world. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a light, heartwarming read.

I received an advanced review copy of this book from the author via Reedsy Discovery. This did not affect my opinion of the book in any way.

2.5/5 rounded up to 3-

I really loved the idea of Ghostly, Ida a fun chipper ghost and Gabriel the cocky lawyer that is trying to ride out a scandal in the house she haunts? Sounded great! Unfortunately this one fell flat for me. I couldn’t stand the MMC, and the last 20 percent of the books with him moping was pretty boring. The romance just didn’t seem believable and not because one of them was a ghost. I did like Ida and thought some of the side characters were fun but not enough to make up for my dislike of Gabriel and the lack of chemistry.

The audiobook is dual narrated which I like. Chris Chambers and Stephanie Kay had good pacing, inflection, and I thought the voices they did for other characters were distinctive. I felt that Stephanie Kay’s performance really captured the upbeat and the anxious moments of Ida. There were a few times where there was a change in POV that was a little hard to follow though.

Thank you to NetGalley and RBMedia for the advance listener copy.

This was a fun and quirky read that wasn’t set in too fast or too slow of a pace. A lawyer, Gabriel Vane, involves himself in a scandal and has to lay low to keep the media off of his back. Gabe rents a quaint Victorian house hours away from home.

The house is exactly what he expected, the town is small and perfect for laying low. As he settles into his *temporary* new normal, he starts hearing strange noises and tries to get a grip…
Everything is okay until he sees a real ghost. An actual phantom. Of course he can’t believe it, and this ghost, Ida, is chatty! Workaholic Gabriel does everything to try to avoid his new roommate, but finds himself feeling bad for dismissing her.

In his quest for peace and quiet Gabe and Ida try to figure out how to get her to pass onto the beyond.
In the process these two find themselves with a budding attachment that’s unexpected.

3.5 ⭐️ ALC Review of the audiobook

Dual narration for the win! Honestly, it’s the way to go. The narrators for this one did great. They both did so good bringing the characters and story to life, and they kept me wanting to keep listening.

This is a really cute, fluffy story. I loved the main and side characters in this one. The banter between the two main characters is great. It’s a fun palate cleanser. It did take a little bit to really hook me, but once it did I didn’t want to stop listening.

Thank you NetGalley and RBmedia for the ALC. 🖤

“You haunted Temple of Doom again, didn’t you?”

A disgraced lawyer moves to a small town to wait out a scandal and ends up exactly where he’s meant to be.

A lonely ghost is trying to make the most of her afterlife when said lawyer comes in and turns it all upside by finding a way to either help her move on to the afterlife or maybe, just maybe get a second chance at living.

Who knew a ghost romance could be so cute? The banter was *chefs kiss*. The OCD representation was very well done.

The narrators did such a good job portraying these characters and truly brought them to life.

Thank you to NetGalley and RB Media for the ARC of the audiobook!

What peaked my interest for Ghostly, was that the ghost was a woman! In any book like this I’ve read (which is maybe two?), the ghost has been the male love interest. Getting to see the dynamic switch up a bit was refreshing!

Plus, not only were the characters likable, but there was beautiful character growth in Gabriel and Ida alike (mostly Gabriel though). Their relationship felt genuine and the escalation of it realistic. I also rate books high when I immediately want them filmed into a fun romcom, which I can definitely see from Ghostly!

It might not be your favorite book, but I would recommend it as a comfy, quick read.

A sweet, whimsical supernatural love story that will make your heart melt and give you the giggles. Gabriel, big city lawyer, and Ida, Victorian ghost with a tragic past, meet and the sparks fly. This was such a cute story that I couldn’t put down. The dual style narration added so much emotion to the story, and the narrators were perfect! I highly recommend this one. I couldn’t help but love it.

This book was so refreshing. She's a ghost. He's a big city lawyer whose life has just imploded (love that - usually it's the FMC who is going through a breakup and career issues). This book is SO swoony. The caring, the pining- I loved it. Also - excellent OCD representation.
I definitely recommend this as a palate cleanser!

Thank you @Netgalley and @RBmedia for the ALC. This is the first book in a new series called Perks of Being Paranormal. Ghostly was such a fun book to listen to. The banter between Gabriel and Ida. Ida is a ghost who is stuck in her childhood home and no one can see her, until Gabriel moves in. Gabriel is a lawyer who has been suspended for kissing one of his clients and getting caught on camera. Both find that they need each other to set them on the right path to happiness. This was a great book to get lost in.

3,3 🌟

"Ghostly" is a charming paranormal romance about Gabriel, a disgraced lawyer, and Ida, a witty Victorian ghost stuck haunting her old home. Their banter is fun, the romance grows slowly but naturally, and the small-town setting is really cozy. Ida also struggles with OCD which is new in a book of that genre, so it definitely adds depth.

The story drags for my liking a bit in the middle, and Gabriel’s choices can feel inconsistent at times, BUT overall it’s a sweet, flully, quirky read with heart.
A solid 3.3-star comfort book for fans of light supernatural romance.

That was so fun! I loved the fact that Ida was a ghost from the Victorian Era but she was still able to stay up to date on current information and technology. I also thought the way she could “haunt” things was a really interesting spin on the ghost genre.

Also… sue me but I loved the marriage and kids epilogue! Those are so adorable and make me so happy!

3.5 stars this was super cute. I kinda wanted a little more action but it was a very light fun read. Surprisingly my second book with. Character who has OCD this week. I never knew about it before and I think this was a great way to bring awareness but not take over the main plot of the story.

I'm surprised by how much I enoyed this, since I basically just jumped in with a recommendation and no idea of the plot. The mix of ultra modern romcom with a ghost from a hundred years back made for a refreshing take on paranormal romance.
