Jun Karentia’s days as the newly-appointed vice-captain of the Dark Knights are consumed by endless tasks. Managing the expedition corps, hunting down traitors, and selecting the finest agents leave her no room for herself. On top of that, she must eliminate those unfit for the Dark Knights' future.
But when Jun uncovers her captain Mayer Knox’s secret, her life takes a turn. Mayer needs her help, and Jun can’t refuse, even if it costs her nights of rest. As they work together, whispers spread throughout Nochtentoria Castle about their relationship. With rumors circulating and a looming disaster on the horizon, Jun must act quickly to stop it—before time runs out.
11%-“…It is not a bad feeling to have you worry for me.” He smiled. ERMAHGERD SWOON!!!
13%-“No wonder you were so accepting of having a drink with me last time. You surprisingly lack a sense of danger at times.” I don’t mind the “clueless MC h re: the MC H DIGS you” trope, with this ship. Nope, bring me MORE! SWOON!!! I LOVE when the powerful MC H falls for the MC h first! 😍😍😍
That HUG at the end! My heart just went SQUEE!!! Oh I can’t wait to see that ship sail!
Second review and quotes above this line.
I SO want to see them get their HEA and for Fabian to get what he deserves! 5, I’m on this ship, stars.

What seems to set this apart from other similar genre books is that the world really is still operating like a game, just one populated by real people. What keeps it comfortably like other similar genre books is that poor Jun has exactly zero clue that Meyer is madly in love with her. Of course, Meyer might not be aware either, so at least they're on the same(ish) page?
Happily re-reading the series in order to remember all the details while reading the most recent release. Having said that, I had forgotten how much I just love this series! Despite being an isekai, there isn't an excessive amount of game elements forced into the story. You don't have endless exhibition of needless game play details. And even though dungeon crawling is a major component, it is not the focus of the story. As a result most of the dungeon crawling is hand waved, only getting the spotlight to improve the story and frame key moments. Overall I think it is very well and tastefully planned.
To further expand on how much I like this story I have to talk about the characters. The characters are vibrant and have great depth to each one. You can tell that the author sat and really thought through each character and made them rounded and whole. Even if you don't know their elaborate backstory there's still a richness to each character you interact with that you know that there is something there waiting to shine through and be revealed.
In this particular volume, you get to see the fruits of their labor as the special force team gets to go on their first high rank dungeon dive. During this exploration, and of course the prep leading up to the trip, you get to see the relationships between the different characters grow deeper. In addition to that, you really get to enjoy seeing our lovely hero and heroin grow closer.
The series is totally binge-worthy. When I realized that I didn't remember the details well enough from the long hiatus between volume four and five I made the choice to reread the series. I haven't been able to put the book down since I started rereading. One after another I'm going through them like a starving man at a feast. And now that I have dutifully shared my opinion and review of the books so far, I will leave to binge the next volume...
This is a continuation of Vol 1 and there is a bit more character development as well as some explanation of the premise of the events that lead to the current story.
There is a bit more awkward sentence construction and even idioms from the native language that don't translate as well into English but the storyline is easy to follow and the grammar doesn't detract from the overall story.
My biggest gripe is that the next volume (3) is not due out until August of 2023. Basically a year from now.
I'd almost wait until the next book (end of the series) to read it if I hadn't already started of course now I'm forced to wait. I think it will be worth the wait.
I'm wondering if Jun and Mayer will acknowledge any romantic feelings in the next novel. It kind of seems like they are inching that way.
"I couldn’t become a hero myself, but I could make one instead, and the pleasure of that fact turned into an overwhelming, thrilling ecstasy. "
jun the hero maker. certainly has a nice ring to it, better than the gray rose for sure. i saw couple reviews bashing her for being too passive in regards to dealing with rumors but she simply doesn't care. she doesn't even budge when she hears something about herself bc her end goal isn't threatened by them. much like mayer, she's satisfied as long as she can work and fulfill her self-appointed role.
i want to talk more about them but i've got no time rn... so see u next volume! 😹
As this is volume 2, obviously this is a continuation. I enjoyed the continued growth of the special squad as well as getting to know more about our male lead. I am curious to find out just how long Jun will take before she realizes that Mayer likes her and gets grumpy when she is with other guys because hes both jealous and insecure since they arent in any kind of romantic relationship. Yet. It's only a matter of time... And volumes. Hopefully the next one has more romantic developments. I cant wait!
From the get-go, this setting felt like a tactical Fire Emblem-like story, which seems to be exactly what it was after. It's much different from many of the popular translated isekai stories where the female lead is just trying to survive her husband's/husband-to-be's assassination attempts. Rather, romance is not a primary focus in our female lead's mind, so for me, it's a breath of fresh air.
Maybe there are other tactical game isekai stories out there, but this is the first for me and I appreciate the new subgenre. I can't wait for the next installment!
Adding a star on this one because despite some typos and the occasional odd translation, the writing noticeably firmed up compared to the first book which seemed to start abruptly and kind of meander a bit. To be completely transparent, it was very tempting to leave that fourth star off because of the incredibly contrived mana-awakening section that had me looking at the pages like.... UMM WUT!?!?! But anyway, I've read worse 😆
Delightful and I can’t wait for book 3! I will definitely follow this author and see if I can read anything else by them. Great characters, fun plot, adorable relationships… I can’t get enough
What a ride. Looking forward to the next book. Jun is finally getting recognition for all her efforts. Can't wait to see what in store in the next book
I appreciate how active the heroine is in this series. Yes, pretty much everyone is stronger than her, but she is smart and capable and won't let the hero smother and protect her.
Very much a middle book. Felt like it dragged on at times and it was definitely disappointing in the romance set up as one of the characters is straight up controlling and abusive.
