This MASSIVE 2 volume book in Hindi by Gita Press, Gorakhpur is the best version of Mahabharat that i have read. It is very detailed but you almost never feel like it's a drag. If it is getting too detailed for you, you can skip the side stories. This book was a major influence in my formative years.

Very nice translation in Telugu prose. This is good enough to understand the Mahabharat the Great Indian epic, the philosophy concisely packed into two volumes. Simple telugu. Must be possessed. Also good for reference. Characters portrayed without distortions and prejudices. Also cross checked with pravachanams of most telugu speakers. Very much satisfied. Very cheap. Good Hard cover binding. About 900 pages each volume.
