At several points, his powers threaten to overtake his humanity, such as when he taps into the devil's blood to fight off Njiantis demons. The internal conflict Crabbe faces—between the surge of power that brings destruction and the desire to hold on to his moral compass—adds an emotional depth that enhances the story. What I find most impressive is how Crabbe, despite these dangerous moments, manages to stay grounded, using his bond with companions like Morocco to keep him focused on his mission.
The author masterfully balances new and well-developed characters with an intriguing plot that explores themes of power, responsibility, and identity. The unique relationships, especially Crabbe’s connection with Morocco, a spirit trapped between worlds, add layers of emotional complexity. One such character is Morocco, a fascinating spirit who adds a unique layer to the supernatural world Crabbe navigates. Stuck between this world and the next, Morocco's backstory is captivating. He was once a fortune teller in Marrakesh, and his appearance—tan skin, black slacks, red shirt, and white turban—reflects his past life before his untimely death.
What really stood out to me was Crabbe's compassion in offering Morocco a home and purpose. Instead of wandering aimlessly, Morocco finds meaning within a 6-foot mannequin.
For me, Morocco’s role as both a guide and a reminder of maintaining one's humanity amid the chaos of the supernatural really hit home. As he lies in pain on his cot, unable to bear the oppressive life of slavery, his mind repeatedly fixes on the thought, “I can’t die like this; I gotta be free.” This hunger for freedom becomes all the more intense when he thinks of Bernie, the milkmaid, and the life he could have with her. I found this aspect of the story incredibly compelling, as it shows how love and yearning for a better life can push a person to make impossible choices.

The language is simple and easy to follow, with vivid descriptions and realistic dialogue that pull you right into the story. Crabbe’s encounters with spirits and demons are full of both humor and tension, making the supernatural feel believable and exciting. His thoughts on family and wanting a normal life add extra depth to the story, making it even more relatable, especially for younger readers.
