Wow another great book in Markland's Montbryce Legacy series. She digs deep in her characters. I find myself staying up later and later because I don't want to stop reading.

Rhys ap Rhodri is not a warrior like his father. He's altogether different as he believes in negotiation and diplomacy as a way of curbing Norman influence in Wales. Now his troublesome twin brothers are captured and sentanced to be hanged by the Earl of Warwick so Rhys makes a very smart move by arranging a betrothal that will save his brothers and get him a wife.
Annalise de Vymont is the orphaned daughter of a disgraced Norman baron. As any young woman she has always dreamed of marrying a handsome chivalrous knight, but not a Welsh barbarian set to drag her off into the wilds of Wales and an isolated castle.
To Rhys she is just a means to an end and a way to save his brothers lives however all is not what it seems when affairs of the heart become involved.
Anna Markland is a magnificent writer. Wow the twists and turns in this book are unreal. You never know what is going to come next. More then once I had tears welling up in my eyes becuase of this rollercoaster of a book. You just may want to have a tissue or two handy when reading this book. It is so good. I swear that Ms. Markland's books just keep getting better and better.

Another great story by Anna Markland filled with the history during the Norman Conquest. All of the Montbryce Legacy books have been well written stories and this one was no exception. The hero Rhys ap Rhodri is more of a peacemaker than a warrior when trying to deal with the Normans in Wales. When he finds his twin brothers about to be hanged by the Earl of Warwick, he negotiates their release by becoming engaged to the Earl's niece, Annalise de Vymont. Of the French gentry, Annalise is not happy about being traded for the twins and vows never to open her heart to Rhys. But as they begin their journey, they become somewhat friends but there are a lot of twists and turns that are coming.
Are they able to find love together?
I truly fell in love with Rhys and Annalise and this story had a little everything that makes a historical romance page turning!! I cannot wait for the next installment of this series!!

A page turner- I read it in almost one sitting
Reading this book is like returning to family friends and falling in love with them all over again. While it is one of a series this story would be easily read out of sequence or by someone that hadn't read any of the others. Ms. Markland does an exceptional job of painting a vivid picture of the area and the characters, while crafting a delightful romance. This book didn't include any firsthand fighting, but it does have some moments that keep you on the edge of your seat.

I enjoyed reading this book. I loved the H/h even though they got off to a rocky start. I enjoyed getting to see Rhys' parents again from the previous book.

Engrossing Story from beginning to end!
Background:
This is the 2nd generation of Norman conquerors and Welchmen in the Montbryce Saga, and the Rhodri ap Owain ap Dafydd ap Gwilym, Lord of Powwydd. (In prior episodes we saw how Rhodri and the first Earl of Ellesmere made peace with each other, eventually. In fact, the Montbryce healer married Rhodri and the wives visited back and forth.). Now, the Second Earl of Ellesmere and his wife have 2 sons and another child on the way. AND, his wife, Carys, is the sister of the current Prince of Powwydd. This continues the good relationship between these 2 families, although the Welch in general are engaging in subterfuge against other Normans who have take up residence near the Marches.
Plot: The year is 1106.
The twin brothers of Carys and Rhys (the currrent Prince of Powwydd) have been caught fomenting trouble by the Lord of Warwick, and are scheduled to be hung in a few days time. Rhys knows that their death might well be the push into death for both ailing, feeble parents. He takes the responsibility upon himself to prevent the twins death, but in a most bold way. The Lord of Warwick has assumed responsibility for his orphaned niece, after the death of her father. She is of marriageable age, but has no dowery from her family. Lord Warwick intends to supply her dowery. Rhys thinks that if he offers for this young woman (whom he has never met), and asks for the release of his brothers as the dowery, with their subsequent oath to not further attack or harass Lord Warwick, it might be a happy solution for all-or nearly all. He is willing to risk marriage to someone he has never met to bring peace to the region and the release of his brothers. How will Lord Warwick respond to Rhys’ proposition? How will the young woman respond to this? From Rhys’ perspective, he is a good catch as the Prince of Powwydd. But she is of the French Gentry, used to living in a castle, does not speak either English or Welch. Will she agree? And, what happens to the twin brothers? So much story is here!
Critique:
Once again, Ms. Markland has looked back in time to actual castles, Lords and events, and placed her fictional characters right in the middle of things. We see how the Normans upset the populace not only of England but also Wales when they conquered and settled in England; how the ongoing struggle for kingship had affected the Montbryce family in France as well as in England. And we see the hardships of dealing with medical emergencies in the days before modern medicines and specialized training even existed. Yet, using things at hand and especially their power of observation and ability to apply what they thus learned to a new problem, was, at times effective.
The writing was excellent, the characters well fleshed out. The storyline picked up points, events and some people we already knew, and added the next generation, giving a sense of continuity to the story. We have several HEA endings in this book (read it and find out what I mean!), as well as several serious problems among various people that are dealt with: a “plague” sweeping through a village, killing many and leaving a healer blind; fear for a husband resulting in a premature birth, then hemorrhaging, nearly to death. How the involved people then adjusted and survived is most interesting, and contains life lessons for us all.
This is the work of a mature writer who has learned her craft well. There is some description of the marital act between husband and wife that makes this story for a bit older audience. I appreciate the gift of this book, and am freely and honestly giving my opinion.

3.5. This book is about the son of Rhodri and Rhowen, named Rhys. Things have changed a lot since we last visited this family. They seem remarkably calmer. Rhys is getting married to a Norman, something that would have be unheard of in the first book, Defiant Passion.
I liked that you get to see how things ended up for Rhodri and Rhowen. They still love each other very much and still seem happy. You also get to see what happens to their children. I love books that allow you to catch up with characters that you've fallen in love with several years down the road. You really get to see how everything turned out. Even though Rhys and his wife, Annaliese are really the main characters of this book, you do get to see Rhodri and Rhowen's other children and what happened to them.
This book is more of a novella than a book; its quite short. However, Markland is able to really make you like the characters in the book in a short amount of time. You really begin to feel for them and the things that they're going through. While the short length didn't take too much away from the story for me, I did find myself wishing that there was a little more detail about a couple things. First, how have things really changed in the environment that the family is living in so that Rhys could marry a Norman without any issue. Second, what were things like in the place that they're living. This book was definitely very character driven but you don't get a good feel for the setting.
Bottom line: A short read with great characters!

This is dramatic, amusing, sad and romantic. Rhys is smart, caring, optimistic and determined. Rhun and Rhydderch are bold and impulsive troublemakers, until they meet Glain. They grow up rather quickly after meeting her and turn into kind, caring and responsible adults. Annalise is a sweet, kind and optimistic girl who only seeks love. Glain and Isolda are sweet and caring, but Glain has a naughty streak in her. Rhys decides to marry the niece of the man who is going to hang his brothers, in exchange for not hanging them. Annalise is not pleased to be traded for the two ruffians, so she treats Rhys cooly, vowing to never open her heart to him. They become friends and get along well, until a near tragedy makes both realize that they view the other with more intense feelings. While making a journey to assess where roads could be built, they meet Glain, who the twins are both immediately attracted to. This causes trouble between the two, and Glain thinks it's a great idea for her twin and her to trick them into thinking that they are both falling for the same woman. Unfortunately that isn't the end of the troubles for them. This is one of my favorite series of books and should be on everyone's TBR list.

Rhys ap Rhodri is more of a peacemaker than a warrior and when his twin brothers are captured and set to hang he decides it’s time for him to marry. Earl of Warwick and Rhys arranges a betrothal that will save his brothers and secure him a wife. Annalise de Vymont is the orphaned daughter of an impoverished and disgraced Norman baron she longs for a love in her marriage, but she’ll do her duty to her family and marry the Welsh Prince. Rhys and Annalise want to find love in their marriage, but each is hesitant to give their love, they’re afraid of being hurt. Their marriage starts out as a passionate one, but will love soon follow, will they admit their love before it’s too late. The story also brings to life Rhys’s twin brothers and the antic they get into and the love they find along the way. I love reading about this second generation of Norman and Welsh offspring that Anna Markland brings to life in her stories. This is my honest opinions after I voluntarily read a copy of this book that was provided to me with no requirements for a review.

Wow what a romance! Allegiance by Anna Markland is book 7 in The Montbryce Legacy Anniversary Edition. If you are a lover of true romance than this is the book for you. Anna is such an amazing writer that the story just comes alive and truly original which is why I love her books so much. She writes the most wonderful character, Annalise and Rhys are no exception. Though in a series, Allegiance can be read as a standalone. This story has an arranged marriage, rescue, dreams, hopes, love at first sight, understanding caring, an ancient, injuries, foresight, practical jokes, illness, blindness, healers, kindness and so much more. A must read if you are a true lover of romance and I highly recommend that you do!

Excellent, well-rounded adventurous, emotional ride to love. The story is so gripping that the anticipation will keep the pages turning. The sacrifice, love & support that this family always shows really touches the heart. Rhys is all grown up and he gets way more than he even thought he wanted although his plan was only to rescue his twin brothers. Annalise is forced to grow up and actually handles her new life very well which makes a good match for a barbarian, lol. I like both of them and their challenges really pull their goodness and feelings out. The twins adventure was a surprise and a bonus, adding even more intrigue.

Rhys son of Rhodri or Rhys ap Rhodri was an interesting character. He had no desire to be a warrior because he was better at diplomacy. When his wild twin brothers are sentenced to hang by a Norman lord he offers himself as a husband to the Norman lord's daughter in the hopes of bringing peace.
Annalise is dismayed to learn she is nothing more than a way to free two warriors. Rhys is also Welsh. She had hoped to fall in love with a Norman but she wound up with Rhys.
Neither expect to fall in love but they do.
I enjoyed this story more than I did the novella of Rhys' father Rhodri. I did feel, though, that some of it, especially the end, was rushed.

Short story that didn't explain too much but had interesting characters. Love the sibling interaction, but the characters seemed almost half-done. Not sure how exactly to explain that, just that characters seemed to be realistic, yet when it came to love and relationships they were completely lack luster.
SPOILER:Anyhow, it annoyed me that brother in law apologized for taking Rhys down accidentally yet it was Rhys' idea to go in the first place yet there was no apology. Oh well.

This book is about the sacrafice of Rhys for his brothers, but there is a lot more going on than that. when a tragedy pops up it's the twins to the rescue, but there is a surprise in store for them as well. The welsh are strong people who want nothing to do with the English, but things have a way of turning things around.

Brothers First
The main thought I took a wash was the love and loyalty of the three brothers. Their honor for their brother by marriage even though he was not what they would have wanted for their sister showed they were honorable men. The bonds of these men and their families is beautiful.

Another spectacular tale
Anna has a penchant for stories that when started are very difficult to put down. Instead you find yourself up till 3 pm to finish. This one is no different. Though you can read this as a stand alone, reading this group of books from first until seventh the reader will feel like part of this wonderful family.

This book is about another of Ms. Markland wonderful characters the oldest son of Rhodri and Rhonwen. I really enjoyed this tale where the conflict happens between a man and a woman and the story of them finding love for each other after an arranged marriage. Historical fiction at it's best.

Quick fun read. Short Sonora lot of time to do in-depth character building but I was cdrawn to the major players. Some humor, romance, sweet love. My biggest complaint was the ending seemed abrupt. Will likely read more by author.

4****This was a good read but too short. Its nice to read a series. I want to read the Twin's story. They are good characters. Just hope its a longer book. I always feel cheated when they are short. I would never pick up a skinny paperback.

Well written, seemed to be a wrap up of of the family/series. I haven't read the other books, but this can be read as a stand alone. I think I might go back the author's back list and read another.

Ms Markland weaves a tale that engrosses you at the beginning and does not let go. You see the sights, feel the emotions, and get to really know the characters.
