Heart-Shaped Box

Rate this book
Heart-Shaped Box is a novella based on the original short story for the Lovesick Anthology. Since the story had to be within a specific word count range, this is the complete novella that shows what happened before Chev and Mari and the conclusion to their story. I hope you enjoy it.

Mari feels unlucky in love. Expecting a present from her boyfriend, Nate, on her birthday, she gets more than she bargained for. The next day, on Valentine’s Day, she receives a package that she hopes conveys the words she so desperately longs to hear.

I need you. I love you. I can’t stand to be without you.

Unfortunately, there is only one word that strikes her right through her heart.

Lovesick.

When she thinks her day can’t get any worse, she finds out she is wrong.
Swearing off relationships, she tumbles into the arms of Chev, a guy who has always seen her.

One heart-shaped box, some heart-shaped candies, and a dose of karma may be the recipe to revive her lovesick heart.

This is such a cute Valentine’s Day story!

Mari is such a likable, sweet character and I felt for her as I read through the betrayal she felt for months. You know how they say trust your gut? Mari should have done that but in true fashion, most of us don’t, and neither did she.

Chevy is a good guy who doesn’t always go after what he wants but when he does…. Swoon. 🥹 He’s got some betrayal in his story too.

Lil, Rory, and Llana are the perfect support to have in your corner!

Overall, a cute story. Check it out if you’re looking for these tropes:

- Insta love
- Forced proximity
- College romance
- Betrayal
- BIPOC
- Opposites attract

L. Renee Richard delivered a sweet, fast-paced romance novella with just enough drama to keep me on edge.

I loved the Latinx representations and loved that the FMC was named Mari, which is what my family and close friends call me.

Mari was a very relatable character. The author did a great job of portraying how we sometimes ignore what is right in front of us because we get caught up on the way someone makes us feel. This is what Mari experienced with her first college "boyfriend" Nate. I found myself yelling at Mari for not listening to her gut, LOL

I loved Chev! He was such a good guy, and this time, when the nice guy finished last, it was in the best possible way.

Heart-Shaped Box was a great palate cleanser with enough sweet and spice to keep the pages turning.

4/5⭐️ loved this! Such a fun, quick Valentine’s Day read. I do have to say that Nate was giving me terrible vibes from the start. All I could picture anytime he came into the scene was a disgusting, sweaty, leech of a man..gag🤢 idk what Mari saw in him because I wanted him gone. Chev on the other hand 😏🤭 immediately yes. Their relationship was so cute!! I wish we got more of Mari and Chev and less of that slimy leech.

And now if you will, moment for the cover art and the graphics at the start of each chapter, loveeee. 🙌🏻🙌🏻So so cute.

This was such a cute little Valentine’s book.

If you like quick fast paced love stories this is definitely one to snag. Mari is heading off to college with her best friend and is looking to change her outlook and her attitude towards life in general. On move in day she finds just the thing or person shall I say to help her do just that. Nate just happens to be the first person she runs into and she is smitten immediately. The only problem is he is a player and it doesn’t take long for her to settle in the cliché relationship of a cheating boyfriend and constant emotional turmoil of breaking up and getting back together. Cue Chevy who also finds himself in a dead end relationship going nowhere especially when he walks in on his girlfriend of 5 years having a sexual encounter with none other than Nate. The problem is, he’s not upset about it because he’s had his sight set on Mari from the first time he laid eyes on her. When Mari gets an unexpected delivery in the form of a heart shaped box she thinks that Nate has finally come to his senses and realized her worth. Imagine the heartbreak when she finds out that the card is addressed to another girl. When Chevy finds out the two are done for good, he makes his move and Mari finally has the treatment she so utterly deserves.

This was a cute Valentines novella. If you’re looking for a quick read with a HEA I recommend this. The MMC, Chev was an absolute sweetheart! I really wish we had more of him. The first half of the book was the FMC, Mari with her jerk of a boyfriend Nate. I feel that could of been told in one or two chapters and the rest with Chev! But overall I enjoyed it! The side characters were amazing also! I love reading such close friends supporting each other no matter what!

Heart shaped box is a great college romance novela, great if you're looking for a short but compelling Valentine's Day read with a little bit of spice!

This version of heart shaped box was everything I wanted out of Mari and Chev's story! I loved getting a bigger peak into Mari's life before what took place in it's Lovesick version. Nate is such a piece of shit and she deserves better and got better ✨️ The moment they say each other at that party was so good! And when they finally got together, I melted.

My third Richard story!

I absolutely fell in love with this novella! Totally relatable!

I enjoyed the main, as well as, supporting characters, well except for one!

Chev, totally swoon-worthy!

Poor Mari, so insecure with herself, and she pays a price for sure!

Can she get an HEA? I had fingers and toes crossed for her!

Cute little valentines novella I enjoyed reading
Mari had to make mistakes and fall for the wrong man to learn her worth and in the end I’m glad she found out she deserves more and better.
Sometimes we have to make the wrong choices to find the right one.
Chev was perfect from Mari and I enjoyed this so much
Eww to them heart shaped candies lol.😆

A great short story. I love how this revolved around growing into knowing your worth. The main characters were easy to follow and were incredibly relatable. I have found myself in both thier shoes before. This was a great short and cozy read.

Follow Mari on her way to figure out what love is as she battles a toxic boyfriend and a guy that she has an insta connection at sight.

This was such a sweet college story spice in the right spots.

Slow to start and I almost DNF but glad I stuck it out. The beginning is a lot of detail and story for a novella but the ending was cute. Just wanted more romance and more of Chev and Mari and less Nate 🤢

Mari is sure she is unlucky in love, especially when her Valentine’s Day does not go as she expects, and Chev has his own share of heartbreak, but he sees her for who she is.
This is a well written quick read, emotionally charged novella, with heartbreak, betrayal, forced proximity, opposites attract, humor, undeniable chemistry, and love, which leads to an entertaining college romance.
I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.

3.5 not rounded up.

I want to start this review with: this is my honest opinion, it’s a little critical but not hateful and I appreciate the work that was put into this book. Please, if you can’t or don’t want to read anything negative about this book, skip the first paragraphs or this review in its entirety.

I loved the premise, the whole learning to value yourself and the love you are worth receiving. But the execution was not the best in my opinion.

Some chapters were way too short and then others had time jumps making the story patchy to me. I also found the whole yea-no with the OM annoying, because a year is a long time to act a fool. Plus, the fact that Mari and Chev didn’t exchange words once in that year and then “that” happened made it a little unbelievable. And last thing, the spice felt like it was written in a rush, in the sends that the descriptions were vague but the content explicit. The description of the actions were rushed and explained in short sentences, making the action feel uncoordinated and confusing.

BUT I loved the cultural and queer representation. The characters were good and I liked the relationship between Mari and Lil. Plus, once the relationship between Mari and Chev was established I was in.

Thank you to the author and The Next Step PR for the e-arc.

Heart Shaped Box ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2
L. Renee Richard
Chev and Mari both have significant other but when their eyes meet each other at a party, there’s some kind of connection that keeps drawing them to one another. As time continues they each start to realize that I love the feel for their significant others is not there anymore. When they both break up with their significant others, they start to realize that maybe something is there for each other. The question remains though well the two of them get together or will things not be what they thought might happen! This is a fast paced Novella that shows you both points of view of their ups and downs.

What I love about Novellas is it cannot be a slow burn. Straight to the point 👏 This Valentines Day Novella was a perfect representation of the college experience including the immature narcissistic boys who you just cant seem to get away from (iykyk) 🙄 But then it turns into a cute little love story with some quick spicy scenes. Overall it was just an okay book for me, so 3 stars.

Chalky cardboard hearts

What a fantastic novella about finding your true worth. Mari and her best friend Lil head off to college and Mari wants to become a better version of herself. Unfortunately she falls into a trap with a player who doesn't value her or monogamy. Until she finally realizes and Chav who has always been on the sidelines finally makes his intentions known.

This is one of the sweetest and hottest quick reads I’ve ever had. The story of Mari and Chev is one of true love, is one full with angst bc omg it always gets me when it’s a right person wrong time kinda situation which happened for our characters…. But trust that while the process is one slow, the relationship & romance is beautifully build so I think it’s perfect in the sense that all the feels - they are genuine and the longing is sooooo satisfying imo so once Mari and Chev get together, their HEA is just so yummy, well earned.

Sweet fast paced valentines romance! College student trying to find love and thought she found it. Mari and Chev had an instant connection, but didn’t act on their feelings right away.

For such a short story (just around 120 pages), this packs a lot into it. It’s a story about a girl going off to college and finding love that is worthy of her. It takes place over the course of a a year or two in college, and during that time the characters show years and years of growth, especially the FMC. At the beginning, she is the sweet, naïve college freshman, moving into her first dorm. By the end she feels like a grown woman, knowing what she wants, and even more so, what she deserves. This novella had just enough angst to make it gripping, just enough sweetness to make my heart swell, and just enough spice to have me fanning myself. Parts of this story take place around Valentine’s Day, but it’s not a Valentine’s Day story per se. It’s a story about how love isn’t a linear journey. It takes twists and turns and ups and downs. I thought it was an entertaining story that didn’t take long to read, but was very enjoyable and enough that you were able to connect to the characters.

Mari is someone that is young and looking for love. She is like many freshman college girls, falling for the first attention that comes her way. But she doesn’t know what she actually deserves. She accepts a pretty face that gives her attention and the smallest bit of affection. Her best friend, Lilith, knows that she deserves better. But as a friend, she does the thing that so many girl friends do and makes faces or rolls her eyes, but never says anything. Chev is such an amazing guy. He is loyal to the girlfriend that he has had since high school. He helps his mom in her coffee shop when she needs it. He knows he is attracted to Mari, but won’t act on it because she is in a relationship. He is so sweet and you can’t help but love the guy.

This novella was a sweet love story that shows how love is a journey. There is angst. There are down times and obstacles in the way. But it was a short, quick read with relatable characters and a relatable story. The spice is there but the story isn’t packed with it, giving space for the journey and the story. It’s a realistic story of what love is like and how we don’t always know what we deserve until it is right in front of us.

I literally wanted to grab Mari and shake her every time she got back with Nate… Like girl, LET HIM GO.

What Nate did on Mari’s birthday was shitty, he didn’t even have the decency to attempt to clear up the situation. Thank god for the mix-up with the courier otherwise, she would’ve gotten back together with him for the hundredth time despite everyone around her telling her that she deserved better.

I wish there was less time spent on Nate and more time spent with Chev even if it was just “Hi, how are you?” throughout the year or even in class but they gave us absolutely nothing. She just ran away from him at every turn, the MCs did not get together until like 70% into the novella. By the time they finally got together, I was like “Ugh, finally.”

Mari and Chev!

Mari goes to college and meets a guy that there is immediate chemistry with. She goes out with him and ends up in the kind of relationship no one wants to be in. He's trash.... 1000% dumpster material. While she is with the loser she meets Chev and it's the worst time because neither of them are single. Of course dumpster fire boyfriend messes up enough that MAri has had enough and ends up with Chev. I love their love story and how long it took for them to finally get together. There was pining, missed connections, and drama!
The story was fast paced and had just enough to give a full story. There were so many references to situations and experiences that felt relatable. This is a novella but oh how I wish it was a longer story so we get to see more of Mari and Chev.
Tropes include:
- Insta love
- Forced proximity
- College romance
- Betrayal
- BIPOC
- Opposites attract

Thank you to L. Renee Richard and The Next Step PR for the opportunity to read this early.

I loved how this book started out, and I loved how the story played out. There for a moment I almost thought in a certain part of it that it could've turned into a fantasy because ofthe attraction.attraction for the female main character in the male main character, how drawn they were to each other. So is the slow burn and when we got up to the-point. Where Chev finally tells Mari how he feels. The first thing she wants to do is being inappropriate in a closet, I lost all respect for her right there. I feel up to this it had a great love story feel. It could've went in so many directions, but that was the wrong way for me. It made me feel too rushed. I would've liked them to get to know each other a little bit more and let the anticipation we felt and let that heat to continue at least a couple 10 pages more. I liked how the story started and I liked how it ended. It's just that one moment-that it could've went so many different ways.

This is a wonderful coming of age love story when Mari and her best friend enter college together. During move in day Mari meets a handsome student, Nate while he helps bring in her bags. Nate takes over and starts a willing relationship with Mari and it goes on and off for more than a year. While at a party Mari’s eyes meet a stranger and the feelings she has are a surprise but he’s with a beautiful girl. Mari knows her relationship with Nate it’s not healthy so when her heart is broken again by him by his heart shaped gift, Mari walks away. During this time unknown to Mari, Chev has left his long time girlfriend after she ruined their 5 years together. Since the first day the girls go to a sweet coffee shop owned by Chev’s mom and they see him working there off and on. When Chev makes his move he shows Mari what love really means and the way they are together is something special!
