"Help me!" For Lily Browning, there was no escaping the visions that had haunted her all her life. And now a little girl's desperate cry for help had brought enigmatic, disturbingly masculine Lieutenant McBride to her door....
McBride didn't have time for psychics. He had a kidnapper to catch. But the honey-haired woman with the golden eyes seemed to see things no one else could — including his own tragic secret. With a child's life at stake, he had to trust Lily...even as each step plunged them deeper into danger and into the uncharted territory of irresistible desire....
I was raised in Alabama, so I know we Southerners don't hide our crazy people—we showcase them. Eccentric people make for the best stories, and we Southerners do love our stories. The need to tell stories has been a driving force in my life from childhood.
As a girl, my favorite books were mysteries and romances. When I realized there were books that featured both romance and mystery, I knew I'd found my calling. Now I get to play both matchmaker and murderer and get paid for it. Could there be a better job anywhere?

Lily is a school teacher who has a vision of a little girl, crying and alone. When Lt. McBride enters her classroom and asks her if she knows anything about a little girl who has been kidnapped, Lily lies and omits her vision...she knows he'd only be skeptical. But the visions keep coming and pretty soon, she has to tell McBride that she sees the little girl, Abby, and that she's still alive. But predictably, McBride doesn't believe her...about the visions or the girl being alive. McBride has reason to be skeptical after his own daughter was kidnapped and a psychic led him in the wrong direction. But his being skeptical doesn't stop the attraction and genuine liking between Lily and McBride. And so when Lily becomes a target of the kidnapper, he's there to protect her and keep her safe. For Lily, she doesn't mind at the moment that McBride doesn't believe her ability, that will be dealt with in time. For now, she's determined to find the missing girl and, with the help of another psychic, a little girl Casey who shows up in her visions with Abby, get her home safely.
This was rather enjoyable. Both Lily and McBride are really likeable - and with McBride that's saying something because he's kind of a butthead for a lot, but he comes by it honestly. He's been jaded by the loss of his own daughter in a kidnapping (followed by the death of his wife) and it's pretty much been hell for him alone the last 6 years. His having been swindled by a psychic gives him perfect reason to be skeptical of Lily even in the face of good evidence. He doubts her at every turn. So of course, in light of that, I question how Lily fell in love with him so quickly. But he very much uses his doubt of her to keep close to her and then once she's in danger he has even more reason, so they spend plenty of time together and I can definitely see how they'd fall in love (if not a bit too quickly). But I really like how McBride's case with his daughter actually ties in here and how even though he doubts Lily (after that final confrontation I could totally see why), he actually takes a leap of faith and turns himself around. And it turns out for the better. The whole way this worked out was just well played and enjoyable. Gonna keep reading this series.
On a side note...what school in this day and age allows an elementary teacher to stay in the classroom and grade while her kids are out at recess. Was that really how it was 14 years ago when this was written? These days kids get a 15 minute recess and the teacher has to be out with them the whole time. Wow. So different.

enjoyed this novel. I think they should have not included the list of characters in the beginning because it felt like it gave me an inkling of whats going to happen
One of the better Harlequin Intrigues that I've read. This one involved a woman who was a psychic who had visions of a kidnapped little girl, and of course the cop who does't believe in psychics. I liked the way the author set up how the psychic ability worked. It was well written. The plot made sense of course once you bought the psychic angle. The relationship happened in a rush but I'm okay with it because it's kind of a given in a short romantic suspense that it would have to move fast. Still I liked the two of them together. The psychic little girl, Casey, stole the show though. Now I still have one sister's story to read. Looking forward to it.
Very good book that had me hooked from the first page. Lily has had visions all her life, usually of missing children. Now she's receiving cries for help from a little girl who has gone missing after her mother was murdered. One of the officers investigating is McBride. He has no trust in psychics having had a bad experience with one in his own tragic past. He can't deny that she seems to know things no one else does, but is she for real or is she part of the problem?
Lily hates the "gift" of having the visions that she does. All they seem to bring her is pain. But she can't walk away from the little girl she sees in her mind, even if that means dealing with Lieutenant McBride. She can sense a darkness and a lot of pain from him, but also a more personal connection. The chemistry between them is intense. As Lily's visions continue she feels that they are getting closer to finding Abby, but McBride is still fighting the idea that Lily sees what she say she sees. She is also confused by the presence of another little girl in her visions. I loved Lily's confidence in her visions and how she's determined to follow through on them. I also enjoyed the way that she stood up to McBride when she needed to. She had a great capacity for love which showed even as she used her visions to help both Abby and the other little girl Casey.
McBride is a rather bitter and pessimistic man. After his own daughter was kidnapped and never found he has lost himself in his work. His gut feeling on hearing of Abby's kidnapping is that she is already dead. I really ached for his unhappiness. His initial reaction to Lily was mistrust especially concerning her visions. He considers all psychics to be fakes out for money or attention. But things with Lily don't add up that way. Plus his attraction to her really confuses him. I loved seeing the way that Lily's confidence slowly works on his disbelief.
The intensity of this story was fantastic. The descriptions of Lily's visions made me feel like I was right there with her. There were places that I couldn't read fast enough to find out what was going to happen next. I loved the twist at the end with the second little girl.
Great story. Lily has visions of people who need help, mostly children that are missing. McBride is investigating the case. They first meet when McBride goes out to question teachers at Abby’s (the girl that is missing) school. He becomes suspicious of Lily within a few minutes. I loved their back and forth dialogue. The questions and answers that McBride says to Lily because of his skepticism against her visions were pretty funny. They were attracted to each other very quickly. They know it will be a difficult relationship because of his distrust of her visions so they try not to act upon it but fail. I loved these two characters especially how Mcbride always acted so tough but was hurting inside. There are many characters that seem like the villain and although I did have a feeling about the identity of the villain in the beginning, it didn’t last too long and later I was surprised to find out who it was.
This was the first of three books and my favorite. There’s a good introduction of Lily and her sisters who all have a specific gift (or curse) and their own books. There is so much suspense and a good balance of the romance and the mystery. The clues that we got from Lily’s visions were very descriptive. This supernatural element was a very important an enjoyable part of the book. I loved the twist that came with the visions that Lily saw and the premonition her sister Rose had of her though I wish Lily had realized the connection quicker. It’s just weird how something like that could be overlooked when any clue is valuable. If Lily had examined this information from Rose, I believe the story could have been even more amazing and would have made even more sense. This would have been a good opportunity for the author to show how the sisters can use their power for the same case or investigation.
There was one thing I had mixed feelings about. Although McBride has lost a daughter and a wife, I still couldn’t help feeling that he was too harsh to Lily about her visions and maybe Lily was a little forgiving near the end. But I guess if you’re in love you might overreact or be a little too patient towards the person you love.
I enjoyed this book and would recommend to anyone who loves mysteries, romance, and the supernatural in one story!
4 1/2 Stars! ~ When first grader Abby Walker is kidnapped, McBride finds his investigation going no where, until Lily comes forward to say she's seen the little girl --- in her mind. McBride doesn't believe in psychics, in fact, he has every reason to hate them, but the girl's father wants Lily on the case. Lily's a third grade teacher in Abby's school, and that and the uncanny timing of events puts her as one of the main suspects. But when attempts are made on Lily's life, McBride finds himself acting as her protector, even when everything within him tells him to steer clear of her. Lily senses there's a deep tragedy in McBride's life, one that holds him back from believing in her and believing that they may have a future.
Awesome read! This is Ms. Graves debut with Harlequin and I'm very impressed. This story has it all; suspense, heart wrenching emotions, passion, sexy hero, strong yet vulnerable heroine, action and a climatic HEA. One of the things that stands out, is McBride. Here's a man dedicated to finding this lost little girl while dealing with huge loss issues of his own. Ms. Graves does a great job in bringing out his vulnerabilities and yet holding on to that hunky male image. I sure hope Lily's sisters get to have their story.

This book was such a great read. I enjoyed everything it had to off. Even though I could she how it was going to end, I really loved the relationship that was growing between Mcbride and Lily, and how even though they fought it they were so drawn in. I liked how the other uses the side characters(Lily's sisters) to help build the story. I really enjoyed contecting with Lily and following her has she grew into her self.
A New Series from Paula Graves, that will have you wanting more Paranormal Mystery Thriller. I finished up Forbidden Territory book 1 of the new series The Browning Sisters. The first book of this series Forbidden Territory put one physic Lily Browning against one grumpy non believer of physics Detective J McBride who just wanted to put Lily in jail because she knows things about the kidnapping of a candidate that is running for the Senate.
Too many coincidences. I do believe that certain people have gifts, and maybe some really do have the gift of “sight” but, when you have a book where several of the characters in the story had this same gift, it just makes it too convenient and too unbelievable.
I love this series. It's always a good read. And I've read this at least a dozen times since it came out years ago. Very good, gripping, edge of you seat can't wait to find out what's gonna happen next type stuff. Really good.
