This book was produced as part of an ehibition at the Royal Academy of Arts in 2025 which I attended. It is a pictorial book of paintings but it does give a brief synopsis of Hugo's life and workss
Victor Hugo's drawings/sketches and painting are all completed on paper and these would easily have been his legacy but as he was a prominent figure as a writer and political figure this area of his work is somewhat undermined
His pen and ink and wash visions of castles, monsters and seascapes remind me a little of William Blake as all works are dark both in subject and colour. I particularly liked "Smuggler's Cave"completed in brown and Indian ink and "At The Edge of the River" completed in ink, scratching and black pencil
An excellent exhibition and book.
