Nell, the Duchess of Manchester
The forgotten, unique and fascinating story of Australia's first and only duchess, from the bestselling author of Sheila and Enid.
When an unassuming young Melbourne woman bumped into a handsome naval lieutenant in a Colombo hotel swimming pool in 1926 she would never have dreamed of one day being the wife of an English duke with three castles.
Demure but feisty Nell Stead and Alexander 'Mandy' Drogo Montagu, son of the ninth Duke of Manchester, fell in love that day and were married within months in a union that surprised English society. Together, the unlikely couple set out to rescue the family's fortunes that had been crippled by taxes and financial mismanagement.
In a world of contrasts, they battle the excesses and eccentricities of dubious relatives under the threat of war to revive a dying estate, including a castle in which Catherine of Aragon spent her final days.
Nell's story is page-turning. The only Australian woman to ever join the British aristocracy as a duchess, her life is a wild ride through England, America and Kenya as the House of Montagu crumbles through four generations.

I loved the deep dive into the opulence of the grand mansions and castles of the aristocracy; furniature and items hundreds of years old- many very significant and valuable. The shared tales of fortunes dwindling and the cost of the upkeep of these historical buildings and land. It was fascinating”
I loved ▫️The dive into history and the excellent research by the author. Love Nell’s character and personality - how she didn’t change to fit in to society of the upper class. Loved the inclusion of family photos included in the book and Nell & Mandy’s ancestral lineage

A lot of historical facts made this a heavy read at times but Nell the Australian Duchess was portrayed as a bright star in a world of aristocrates.
This very well researched book by Robert Wainwright records the family story of the Dukes of Manchester , who lived in Kimbolton Castle but tells the sad tale similar to many families with large estates, how the costs of the upkeep etc is just too great to sustain these places
An interesting read and very well written .

This was a quick and easy read about a woman I had not heard of or read about before. Despite that I was familiar with the names of some of her more famous relatives due to other books I have read. It made me laugh to read that she often dropped the F bomb when writing in her diary.

A fascinating insight into the past and way of life that is no longer tenable. Readable, simple prose. Would highly recommend it
