Prince and the Throne

Rate this book
Fedosian winters are cold, but colder still are lovers turned strangers.

As autumn turns and winter settles over Fedosia, cold has seeped in between Sofia and Aleksei. She loves him still, but the archmage’s memory spell has made her a stranger in his eyes. They hardly speak anymore, and their troubles only compound when they arrive in Sarostia and discover Duke Rodion of the Red Den has his own ambitions for the throne. He desires war—and not just with the Guards.

Lev is holed up at Usolya Fortress, but evil lurks in the Bone Country as the days shorten and the nights lengthen. When allies turn to enemies and dark alchemy haunts the halls of the Guard Fortress, he alone must hunt down a necromancer far more powerful than he imagines.

Prince and the Throne is the second book in the Fedosian Wars series, a plot-heavy, character-driven fantasy romance.

Content This is a dark fantasy with depictions of violence and strong language.

Okay - this series is absolutely delicious!!

This story starts off where the last left off and the action is much more fast paced this time around.

The relationship dynamics are deep and well developed and will cause your heart to ache and hurt at times.

Absolutely, without at doubt worth the reading time.

This was everything that I was looking for when finishing the first book Serpent and the Throne and thought this was a strong sequel in the Fedosian Wars series. It uses the dark fantasy element perfectly and was hooked from the first page, The characters had that element that I wanted and really enjoyed how they worked in this story-line. Brien Feathers always does a great job in writing this and I'm excited to read more from her.

I've been waiting for this book since I finished book 1. I love how this book sends you on a roller-coaster of emotion from loving Lev to hating him then back to loving him. I'm excited for book 3 and can't wait to see where this story goes.

Disclaimer: I received an advance review copy for free and am leaving this review voluntarily to share my honest opinion.

Trigger warning: if violence, abuse/assault trigger you in anyway this may not be the book for you.

This is the second book in this series, and it did not disappoint. Unlike book 1, which was a little slower of a read, this was fast paced. Like book 1, it left me wanting more. Both books are very well written, and filled with adventure.

Sofia, Lev, Aleksei, and Niko are back. Sofia is determined to stay with her love even though he doesn’t remember her or their relationship. Lev is determined to get revenge for his father’s death, save his sister Sofia and continue to hate Aleksei. He also wants to make the Guard name mean something again and is racing to take the power and put it in his name. Prince Niko continues through life as the child he is, thrust into the title and power with no skills to use it. Leaving him quite susceptible to outside influences and pressures.

This book continues from where book one left off, Lev knowing that something dark is out there and it’s coming for everyone. Sofia knowing that as a Guard she should be on Lev’s side but stays with her love even though he is a Shield. Aleksei doesn’t remember anything about their relationship which makes him frustrated at Sofia because he doesn’t want to hurt her but remembers everything about caring for Niko and how much work that is. Niko is young and impressionable and he doesn’t really know how to be in charge. He relies on his brother and his sentinels to take care of matters but something seems different with him. Something off. This second installment shows us what the dark thing is and how it has moved about the world. Niko’s storyline reveals many secrets that both the characters in the story and us readers wanted to know.

Sofia and Aleksei travel with Niko to protect him and the crown. They inevitably encounter Lev, who in this book has a much bigger storyline than the first, and end up all together to fight for the throne. But in the end they must decide if the fight is worth it when they need to be fighting for Fedosia.

Again this book ends with some many questions, things up in the air, and a whole new world to discover. You can bet that I will be back as soon as book 3 is out! Read book 1 and then read this one. I am sure you will enjoy both!

This honest review of Prince and the Throne by Brien Feathers is given in conjunction with having received an ARC copy of the book.

What an absolute whirlwind of a story. I found myself pulled back into this book night after night until it was finished way too soon. I am ecstatic that the author has announced that this will now be a quintology for what was originally supposed to be just a trilogy. The more time we can have with Sophia and Aleksei the better. Especially now that we are getting into the meat of their backstories and how it is all coming back to haunt them -- all of them!

One character that stood out for me in this volume was Lev. My goodness, what an arc for change that boy has coming! Where in Serpent and the Throne he was nothing but an addicted lush and annoying brat, in Prince/Throne the boy is starting to show signs of being a very considerate and intentional patriarch to the White Guard clan. Despite all of his flaws… and wow does he have them!… Lev can be a very human and very relatable character.

Brien Feathers has a way of giving life to such a huge cast of characters, considering how short her stories can be in comparison to what is considered ‘mass market’ novels where they all feel the same and with so little depth. I’m not naming names, but you know the phonebook-thick tomes I’m implying.

And heartbreak! Oh my, the heartbreak this volume gave us. What we got in semi-spicy loving in Serpent, we got in terrible pain times ten in Prince. And if this pattern continues, I don’t know what to expect in the next volume of Tsar and the Throne. Ms. Feathers is an expert in the true form of narrative - to create emotional reaction within the reader.

I appreciate how much we got to learn about our main characters, not just our leads, and how the author so expertly dribbles it all throughout to the point of nerve wracking ‘when’s it going to break’ tension. And also just enough to leave us wanting more for the next book.

Can’t wait to read Tsar and the Throne!

War ravages Fedosia as fall turns to freezing winter. Sophia is relentless in her determination to win Aleksei’s affections once again even though he has no memory of their previous relationship. She is also desperately searching for any news about her beloved brother Lev Guard, but conflicting reports about whether he still lives has her searching the libraries in various manor houses while crossing the country about the strange power she thinks she might now wield. Unfortunately, they will return to Sarostia only to discover that the duke of the Red Den wants the throne and will declare war on any who stands in the way of his ambitions. Lev Guard not only survives but he has an entirely different war to wage, dark alchemy and a powerful necromancer is attacking friends and enemies alike and only he has enough power to defeat this particularly dangerous enemy.

Oh, so good, I loved this book. Of course, I have loved every dark and sometimes twisted work that this author has written. Pay attention to the author's warnings because this book is filled with bloody battles, magic, murder, and enough twists and turns in the plot I was left reeling. The characters are all absolutely fascinating. Whether you liked or hated them they are always well portrayed with their own unique personalities. Questionable morals or downright crazy, maybe insane applies to some, these characters kept me engrossed in this book from the first page to the last. I highly recommend this book to other readers.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

For clarity: I received an advance review copy for free through BookSirens. Although I used such a service, I choose what I read and review. I do so voluntarily.

Prince and the Throne overall felt like a stepping stone for the next in the series. It had a lot of action and confrontation to have content, but most seemed either to address problems from the first book, or to be set up for later. A moving of the chess pieces, if you will, for a future check mate. I didn't feel this story in its own had a conclusion or series of events that were for its own sake. It helped the overall world building. Explaining the magic system in more detail, delving into its history, cemented characters more towards their final roles.

It compliments the first story, and I feel will make the third more satisfying but they are definitely necessary for this one to make sense.

So far, I love this series. It has the familiar that I have come to know and attribute to Brien Feathers while also setting itself apart from her other stories. This having the most fairy tale feel of all I have read of hers. Sofia a spunky, caring Cinderella, mixed with a clever, smarmy evil Queen. She has felt the most like a lost princess who can still hold her own against all of Brien's strong female leads. All set in her dog eat dog, old world magic meets mid-modern tech. I may be biased, but I am having fun following Sofia's ups and downs as she just tries to keep her prince charming in one piece.

‘The truth is the truth whether it’s patriotic or not.’
This tale is full of betrayals, deceptions, feuds, political upsets, and turncoats. Some people would rather turn a blind eye to wrongdoing out of loyalty rather than to stand up for what’s right, but at what cost? Whom does that serve, in the end? Certainly not the masses who are dependent on protection from their rulers. Especially not when said masses need protection from said rulers…

Chuckle:
‘Don’t poke darkness with a stick. Maybe it bites.’

Some sage advice from the author:
‘Information framed in a useful way is advice.’
Everybody has a breaking point. It’s what one does with the pieces that make all the difference.
Know the cost before you agree to pay. ‘Not all debt can be settled with gold’; often, some form of sacrifice is required.

Fave line:
‘I find everyone is beautiful in their own way, like the crystal flakes of snow.’ I’ll now always have to think of snow as ‘the saints must be having a pillow fight’.

If only the fighting in this tale were as harmless as pillow feathers. May we all see a day (and soon) when war is no more and the Guards lie down with the Shields.

Will Aleksei be able to prevent a war? Will Lev find his necromancer? Will Sophia win over Lev? What’s up with Niko? Stay tuned for the upcoming ‘Tsar and the Throne’ to find out!

I have been loving this series, but then again, everything u have read from Brien so far has been absolutely AMAZING!

This starts off right where book 1 leaves off, which is always so nice to have. This one is way more fast-paced and packed with more action also.

There is so much more development going on in this book. From aleksei, who still is not remembering Sophia but knowing he seems to love her and wants to do anything for her still. To little Niko having a lot of outside influences on his actions which were unexpected. And Lev wants to give up everything to deciding he wants to get revenge and put the family name back up on the board.

There are a lot more dark beings and magic at play. You will be put on such a rollercoaster of emotions from everyone really in this book! There is some heartbreak, so be ready for that as well. Plus, by the end, you're ready to just dive into book 3 to get all the answers you had!

Overall, I love this series and can not wait to start book 3! Thank you so much, Brien, for this opportunity!! I did receive this as an ARC, and this is my honest opinion!

@booksirens ARC Review of Prince and the Throne by @brien_feathers

4/5 Stars
0/5 Spice

The Prince and the Throne is book 2 in Brien Feather’s Fedosian War series, and it picks up right where Serpent and the Throne ends. And it becomes even more hopeless, as the characters limp from one “we’re in deep 💩” situation to the next even worse situation. I know Brien says she’s Mongolian, but I’m beginning to think she might be Russian the way this series is going. To borrow a phrase (with a slight edit, of course), “It’s all very Russian.” 🤣 You want doom, gloom, and immense hopelessness? This is your book.

I both loved and hated that this book gave me a bajillion puzzle pieces that are clearly from the same puzzle but that’s about all ya know. Is it sky? Is it water? Is it a blue wall? Who knows?

Why do I do this to myself?! I just want Sophia and Aleksei to be together dang it! But I’ll be back for books 3 & 4– tears, yelling, comfort snacking, and all!

Just like book 1, it takes some getting used to getting back into the story. The sequel of Sofia and Aleksei. It's a dark world they find themselves in. Full of magic and war. Niko, the prince has been kidnapped together with Sofia. And it is up to her brother Lev and Aleksei to find her again. But the war between the houses is getting closer. And so many houses no longer exist. And now it's time for the final war between Fedosia and Elfur. This book grows on you, you can't put it down, you need and want to know how it ends. The characters within develop and you now get to know the little facts. Yes, I can really say that despite the difficult beginning, this series is highly recommended.

Brien does an awesome job of connecting one book to the next, this makes it easy to fall back into the world she has excellently created. This installment doesn't slow down for you to catch your breath, I was so conflicted about my feelings for Lev, do I love him, or do I hate him? Brien always does such an awesome job of writing characters in a way that makes you connect with them. I am always sucked in completely when I read her books.

Please be sure to mind the trigger warnings.

Strap in for the ride, and enjoy this dark romantasy!

Thank you, Brien and Booksirens for the ARC of this book.

I'm so glad I decided to take a chance on this series. It is so unexpected what happens in this journey, that you are left scratching your head. In this series, you have the good, the bed, and the ugly. And you just don't know who is who as things change so quickly. The one person that you constantly cheer for is the main character Sophia. She has been through the ringer in the first book, and this book continues her journey. You see her strength, her determination, and her character. She is the main reason to keep reading.

This is a dark romance, so read your triggers before starting, that being said:

I just love this series. Brien does such a good job with the main characters. And the older FMC is such a nice change from most books. Every plot twist I don't expect, and the relationships are so well written. I love watching the characters play their different roles in the story from war to politics to love and betrayal. Beautiful.

All the main players are back and a bit scattered as they do their thing to stay alive and uncover lots of things that kept the story rolling and me entertained. Bad guys abound, drama and intrigue are high, and I had my fingers crossed for poor Sofia and Aleksei. I really wondered at times if everyone was able to not find trouble but it did keep the story hopping. I was glued to the end and loved every minute of it.

Just as good as the first one!

I am incredibly grateful for the chance to be an ARC reader for this fabulous fantasy series.

It takes some time to get into the plot from the first book again, but once I do, it is all smooth sailing and so enjoyable. Hang in there. I also like that it is a dark novel with depth because sometimes I simply want a break from the lovey-dovey romantasy I occasionally read.

Once again, I've found a book series that I am willing to ignore my adult responsibilities for. This is book two, and the anguish that you felt in book one is still there! Sofia and Aleksei are breaking my heart, Lev is at Usolya Fortress, and friends become foes. Needless to say, I loved it and I'm ready for book 3!!!

With its captivating and vivid writing, the second novel in the Fedosian Wars series had me just as hooked as the first, if not more so. I devoured this book in no time as I simply could not put this sequel down. The way the story developed was just fantastically realized and written. The characters are complexly written and well developed.

dark fantasy with sweet and spicy romance. Grey characters that are cruel and twisted. Political intrigue and war scenes that have a magical bent. Necromancy and other dark magics, that sometimes appear to be light. Read and enjoy!

The plot is abit messy but I love how messy it is ? The messiness makes it captivating and I love the twists and turns and how all the characters are not perfect and so human
