There’s nothing especially wrong with this volume of Hirayasumi; honestly, parts of it are very, very good. It just lacks that extra little bit of whatever the series does that transforms the good into the brilliant.
It might be the way this tries to cover a lot of ground over the course of the volume and feels a little all over the place as a result. The narrative throughline about Natsumi and her struggle with creating manga is really good, but it’s approached from several angles to various levels of success.
Hiroto continues to be a life lesson in doing things for the joy of doing them, rather than having a grand purpose. He’s no guru, but there’s no question that his approach is infectious and, even if nobody goes quite as far as he does, it reminds them all to see the pleasure in the small things.
The back part of this volume is better than the start, when Hiroto and Hideki have what looks suspiciously like either chasing a dream or an early onset midlife crisis with their decision to go back to their roots and do something that lets Hiroto get over something from his past.
This comes as Natsumi’s latest attempt at a manga gets the most withering feedback yet from her older editor, whose feeling of being out of step with the world has really started to weigh on him. His evaluation is from a place of good intention, but it’s absolutely savage in its way.
Which sets Natsumi on edge and causes her to vent her frustrations towards Hiroto, just because he’s doing what he always wanted and without having to really work for it. Except he does work hard at it, it’s just not obvious. The denouement to this is really nice.
Hiroto and Yomogi’s relationship goes a bit further this time, especially after an epic fumble by the third participant in this love triangle. Sometimes erring on the side of caution does not impress a woman.
Yomogi once again goes through the wringer here, but the visual representation of her emotional state is an accurate a representation of how it feels to be overwhelmed as any I’ve seen. It leads to… well, we’ll see if it leads to anything, but here’s hoping.
This feels like a volume that’s trying too hard to catch up with everything going on in the story and it winds up feeling a little frenetic. Which is exactly the opposite of how the series is meant to feel. Ironic or not, it’s a bit more hectic than the series at its best.
That’s being harsh because the story is fantastic and the lives of the characters remain interesting as they deal with more realistic concerns than a lot of manga. It’s just that the best Hirayasumi is superb and creates a very high bar. This approaches it, make no mistake, but isn’t quite there.
4 stars - very good, but missing that little je ne sais quoi that would have it representing the series at its best. Still more than worth your reading time and money, mind you, that’s not in question by this point.
Hirayasumi, Vol. 6 is an absolute gem and a perfect example of what makes this series so brilliant. This volume feels like a true rebuilding and finding yourself story. I loved watching Hiroto and his best friend Hideki decide to pursue their dream of making a new movie together, with Natsumi and her friends stepping in to help. It’s a wonderful display of friendship and shared ambition.
At the same time, the story gives some great focus to the other characters. Yomogi is figuring out her love life, which adds another layer of human emotion to the mix. And I really felt for Natsumi, who is feeling so stuck in her life, as a writer myself, I completely understand her pain.
Overall, this volume beautifully captures the series’ core theme: finding peace and happiness in life's small moments. It's a heartwarming, hopeful, and deeply relatable read. If you haven't started this series by now, you need to. It's fucking brilliant.
You know what, Hiro? I think I'm going to give up manga for a while... and do some useless stuff. I'm a student, after all! I've got to make the most of it!

a lot of pondering about family by the female characters in this one. interesting. tachibana, who is explicitly stated to be keenly aware of her age, her best friend getting married, that panel of her looking through the window and seeing a family--and then we have granny with her diary entry :((
dont wanna read too much into this but yea you do consider these things differently as a woman (bc society! gdi)
----
we have hiroto's "does everything have to be meaningful" and im just screaming YES YOURE SO RIGHT
----
theres a lot of loneliness expressed in each character!! but they can be lonely together and that makes it easier to bear!!!
----
what exactly counts as "meaningless"??????????????????????????????
----
all in all, a good volume to ponder on. it's diving deeper into the crisis part of the quarter life crisis, but still, the coziness is there
It's been several months since I read the previous volume of this series, so my memory was a little vague when the characters mentioned events such as Hiroto collapsing at work. I honestly couldn't tell if I was supposed to remember that scene from the last volume or if it was something that happened off-screen.
Regardless, I enjoying jumping back into this world and seeing its characters again. I especially liked Natsumi's subplot of learning that humans don't need to behave purposefully all of the time. There is joy to be found in simply savoring the moment and indulging in so-called pointlessness. I'm reminded of characters in Becky Chamber's stories, where living creatures are distinguished from tools, with no concrete purpose or need to be useful. I'm glad to see Keigo Shinzo writing about a similar life lesson! Very wholesome and refreshing.
Some of the joy felt a bit lost in the first issue but by the end I wanted to hug someone and plant a flower. Does everything need a point? NO! That is exactly what makes it worth doing, giving your whole heart to something and making someone else’s life better. Just a really wonderful series. It makes me feel happy. I hope Nat gets back to making manga, she seemed lost or disappointed in her own writing abilities and hope she finds the joy she once had (I think she’s just stressing herself out).
Read this if you’re having a bad day, it’ll make it better. If you’re having a good day, read this and get that plus 1 boost. I love this series.
This continues to be one of my favorite manga series.
Seeing both of the cousins come to different decisions in their lives was refreshing and felt realistic. I know Nat will get back to her manga after she has some time to recoup. And for Hiroto, props to him for always staying true to himself. Seeing him confess without any remorse was endearing and I'm really hoping they're end game. Sorry to the writer, lol.
Thanks so much to Viz Media for the DRC! I'm really happy this series is getting published.
Honestly, while reading this volume, I was a bit annoyed by Natsumi's behavior of looking down on the people around her. However, there were also things that made me feel butterflies in my stomach, such as how Yomogi's love affair develops, Hiroto's words of wisdom when he encourages Yamada in his troubled relationship, the flashback between my grandmother and Hiroto, and how Hiroto and Hideki try to relive their youthful desires.
this hit omg. loved the tension in different opinions on the meaningfulness of things between natsumi and hiroto just the development of their relationship has been so interesting and wholesome to read. hirayasumi u are so special to me.
Simplement brillant ❤️
