✅My thoughts: Zero Hours is the first book in a new series by Steve Sheffield. The story is certainly full of action! Zero Hour reads like a Jack Reacher novel with even more over the top action. Maybe just a bit too much “out of control” action. With that said, I rather enjoyed reading Zero Hour. Main character, Eddie Virgo, keeps us entertained and engaged. He was doing hard time in prison where he thought he’d be for many years. Then, unexpectedly, he is back to being a negotiator. In some instances, he needs to slow his impulses. I am interested in where the author takes Eddie Virgo next. Looking forward to another roller coaster of a ride!
Inkubator Books provided an early galley for review.
This appears to be Sheffield's debut novel, and I found it to be well-written and steadily-paced. He has a solid handle on the gritty, violent thriller genre, making even the more-familiar narrative troupes work in an entertaining manner.
I found myself very connected to the popular culture references that Sheffield sprinkled in throughou7t this novel. The songs and shows that are mentioned resonate with this Gen-X reader. It helped further define the character of Eddie Virgo, beyond his actions and responses to the situations around him.
In the end, this is a series and an author I am willing to check out again in the future.
This is Book 1 in the Eddie Virgo Thriller Series and this book hits the ground running from the first page.
The story follows Eddie Virgo who is offered an early release from prison if he does a final job... of course, even with his special forces training things won't be easy.
Eddie is a great character Nd I enjoyed learning about him and his overall background. He is tough and intelligent- his enemies should watch out!
The story is fast-paced and action packed so as the reader, you are never bored and Steve has you constantly thinking and trying to put together the thrilling puzzle.
A fabulous start to the series and I can't wait to see where Steve takes us next!
This is the first book in an exciting new series - The Eddie Virgo Thrillers and also my first read by this author.
This isn't a genre that I read a lot of so it was quite refreshing to have something different and to be getting into a whole new character like Eddie. This was giving me Jason Bourne vibes but also a hint of Justice League too.
Doing time after one of his special forces jobs went rogue, ex hostage negotiator, Eddie, is called upon to help save a wealthy senators daughter who has been kidnapped.
I love this idea that deep down, Eddie is a good guy, but he likes to do things his own way! He respects his own rules and will do whatever it takes to get the job done. A great character to explore and I really hope that we get to hear more of his backstory as the series goes along.
This case was complicated and there were other things going on around the central case, which kept this full of action and intrigue. The pace was good and with the added twists, I was invested the whole way through.
A great start to this series and one that I'll try to follow. I'm looking forward to Eddie's next case....
Zero hour by Steve Sheffield. Book 1 of Eddie Virgo thrillers. I loved the cover and blurb of this book. I liked Eddie. I liked how he was. He had a no nonsense attitude. I wasn't sure how I felt about Nick. I liked Kenny. I didn't like Accardi. I was rooting for Edfie to find Stacy. Double twister. I didn't see that coming. I'm looking forward to the next book. I would recommend this book.
This is a first in a new series and I think for action thriller fans is a good choice. The author builds up the story and introduces their main character well.
Here is my review for Zero Hour by Steve Sheffield
I really enjoyed this full of action story that to me was a fantastic read. The character Eddie Virgo was a special forces trained veteran who had taken the law into his own hands in Mexico. He was jailed but got a DOJ pardon to work with the FBI for seven days doing one job, negotiating the release of Stacy Donovan who has been kidnapped. Eddie has a good way of finding his way into trouble but then he teams up with an LAPD detective Jennifer Accardi and they tap their resources. Eddie realizes he’s fallen into a hornet’s nest and has been brought back to dig the FBI out of the dirt. They have worked out why Stacey was kidnapped now they just have to work out where she is and to get to her in time. This story is the first book about Eddie Virgo and the author has hit all the spots for me with this story. I absolutely loved it. It put me in mind of Jack Reacher. Only Eddie Virgo is more badass. He worked at critical incidents at the FBI and is used to hostage negotiation. He gets himself into trouble so easily but hasn’t got the badge to back him up any longer. It’s a really strong storyline and kept me invested in the story. The story was exciting and full of action with lots of fighting involved. Gun fighting as well hand to hand, all very well described. The story is exceptionally well written and everything is described so well it makes you feel as though you are there picturing it. The story is really well plotted and thought out. I found it hard to put this book down as I really wanted to know what happened next in the story, it is a corker.

Now stay with me here but I might have been initially drawn to this novel for three reasons, one the cover, two it sounded interesting and three it gave me slight Resident Evil four vibes from the blurb, I mean maybe it’s just that Eddie is trying to track down a senator’s daughter but my brain went there.
I can safely report that I am so glad it did because I loved this book! It was action packed and such a good thriller. I loved the characters particularly Eddie who is fantastic. I love the idea that he does things his own way, which might not seem to be the ‘right’ way but it gets things done. For what appears to be a debut novel I adored how Sheffield created Eddie to be complex in that sense and that he has a softer side underneath it all as well. So needless to say the characters are fanatastic.
The writing was also amazing and the pace kept steady throughout which kept me hooked. I never felt lost in the narrative or something was happening for filler but rather it all felt natural, well plotted and executed.
I never spoil plots but needless to say if you love a good action thriller this one will tick all the boxes. I really can’t wait to read more by Sheffield in the future because this was a fantastic starting point.
As always thank you to ZooLoo’s Book Tour for the copy to review. My review is always honest, truthful and freely given.
This was probably one of the worst books I’ve ever read. Have you ever read a book and it just wasn’t…believable? I know that sounds ridiculous because it’s a fiction book but good lord I could not get through this fast enough.
I mean, this guy is an FBI agent on the hunt for a kidnapped girl. He’s by himself. He has no identification but people just wave him through security check points “because he says he’s with the FBI” and then he’s like in the streets straight killing people and breaking their arms. I’m like ??????? Wtf is happening. He’s like a freaking hit man.
Then there’s dialogue that’s supposed to be witty banter between people and it’s so cheesy and ridiculous it sounds like it came straight out of a Hallmark movie. At one point, someone says “Cuff him Jonno” and I’m over here like…did you mean “Book ‘em Dano? Is this Hawaii Five-O?”
THEN they start giving you random background about characters that’s like a few sentences long and is not even relevant to the story. Why is it even in there? There’s NOTHING that helps you connect to the characters and feel what they’re feeling. Everything in this book seemed so utterly unimportant I can’t even believe I wasted my time with this.
I received an ARC through "Booksprout" and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
This is the 1st book that I have read by this author and it won't be the last. It begins with Virgo in Mexico working to free a kidnapped girl and everything is in place for the transfer, but in the end it all goes wrong and Virgo takes her anger out and is then sentenced to prison. He is later transferred to a prison back in the U.S where he is to finish his sentence.
In this prison another day starts except an attack takes place against him and he to be placed in solitary. He is then notified that he has a visitor and learns that he is needed for a job and if he accepts, he will be freed. It seems that a Senator's daughter has been kidnapped and Virgo is to find her and set her free. He agrees and then begins the search.
Follow Virgo along as he faces a situation that takes all of his skills. Learn who assists him, what obstacles he faces, and who was responsible and what they wanted. He finds out that there is something fishy in the end.
This is a book well worth reading and you won't be disappointed.
(Eddie) Virgo is an ex-FBI negotiator whose temper got him a long prison sentence. He’s sprung from jail to try and find and save a senator’s kidnapped daughter, Stacy. Does it seem a little too good to be true? He’ll have to figure that out.
This is a good start to a new series. The author really captures the fine line between good and evil and the gritty side of government. To balance the grit, there is a little humor too. My mind kept going to astrology with the name Virgo and Eddie makes a joke or two about the play off his name and the sun signs. I also appreciated some of the music as it appealed to my Gen X taste.
The plot is complex with a few twists along the way. Virgo doesn’t always play by the rules or play well with others, but he gains a little support as he searches for Stacy. At times it feels like he is about ready to go too far, but he is focused on figuring out who he can trust.
I’m excited to see where this series goes and if book two is as engaging as book one.
Zero Hour by Steve Sheffield This is a well paced book and full of action. There’s fighting and chases but there is also suspense and a good overall plot. Eddie Virgo is an ex FBI hostage negotiator that has a problem controlling his actions and he constantly finds himself in trouble. He is all about tracking and rescuing those in need no matter what it takes. He has a one track mind and takes the law into his own hands, which is exactly why he is tasked the locate a kidnapped senator’s daughter. This is the first book in what I hope will be a series. I’m interested in what will happen next now that some characters and backgrounds have been established. Overall I give this book a 3.5 but rounding up to 4 stars rating. Thank you to Steve Sheffield, Inkubator Books, and NetGalley for allowing me an advanced copy to read and review.
Zero Hour delivers a gripping and fast-paced thriller, reminiscent of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher series. Eddie Virgo’s, an ex-FBI negotiator turned convict, makes for a compelling—if occasionally over-the-top—central figure whose reckless attitude can either thrill or frustrate. The story starts strong and maintains a steady pace, with twists that enhance the final quarter of the book.
Steve Sheffield crafts a solid narrative, balancing Virgo’s intensity with a well-rounded supporting cast that anchors the story.
As the first in a series, Zero Hour lays a strong foundation. I’m eager to see where Steve Sheffield takes Eddie Virgo next, and how the characters evolve in future installments.
This new series is off to a good start. Eddie Virgo is an ex hostage negotiator who is freed from prison to aid in the safe recovery of the daughter of a senator. This isn't as straighforward as it seems and there are links to something deeper happening behind the scenes.
This was quite a riveting read. Eddie is not your conventional negotiator and has no qualms about doing whatever it takes to do his job. There are other elements in play and I like how the pace is maintained throughout. There's plenty of action and further twists and the ending was quite fitting I thought I will certainly read more by this author.
A definite home run for Steve Sheffield. This is a new author to me and a new series for him and I was very impressed. Eddie Virgo is in jail for a long time, that is until the bureau needs him desperately. Eddie is offered an early release if he does one last job for the Bureau, but that job might get him killed. The daughter of a wealthy senator is kidnapped, it is up to Eddie to get her released. Things go south quickly and it will take everything Eddie has to rescue the girl and not get killed.
This is my first book by this author, and I would read more. Many sick villains in this book and one that surprised me.
Some editing issues and a wrong name used. This book has violence, twists, intrigue and interesting characters. I wanted more in the ending with the kidnapped victim and her thoughts. ' This story is about different points of view from different characters. No cheating, no cliffhanger, no romance or steam. I can't improve on the blurb, just giving you extra tidbits to decide whether to purchase. (ljb)
I found the story to be very fast paced and engaging. However the constant use of British terminology like leant instead of leaned , plipped the lock, dived instead of dove , lift instead of elevator and learnt instead of learned was very off putting to me as the story was set in Los Angeles and Eddie Virgo is an American former F.B.I. Agent. Thus I had to deduct a star as it took away from the story.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
Intense thriller that keeps you guessing and on the edge of your seat until the end. There are so many twists and turns that are unexpected with the characters that help make the story. They are a diverse bunch of characters that add to the complexity of the story and what is happening in the story. Good read.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Not a bad story, well-paced and engaging. The only distraction was several (or more) phrases that gave away the author as British (Aussie?) trying to write an American crime thriller. We don’t go “on holiday” - we go on vacation. We don’t get admitted “to hospital” - we get admitted to “the” hospital; and they’re not “hires,” they are rental cars. Just kind of makes the reader break his concentration to try and figure out what is meant by the odd phrases.
First book in a new series and I thoroughly enjoyed it and will be looking to read the next one. I love this character and his never say die attitude and his mindset when he has a mission. I also agree with his sense of Justice. Full of action and some hairy situations. I read it in one sitting as time just flew by as I was engrossed in the story. Give it a try as I don't think you will be disappointed.
Starts off with FBI agent Eddie Virgo convicted of murder and in prison. Then a surprise visit and he is set free only to be contacted by his former FBI boss / mentor. Why is the first question when told there was a job for him to negotiate the release of a senator’s daughter. Things are just not adding up and people are either missing or dead. He winds up back in jail and that is where Accardi comes in. Enjoyable read
i don’t know if i was just in a slump but it took me a while to read this book, it just didn’t draw me in the way i wanted it too. if i would’ve read this at a different time im sure i would’ve like it more. the plot was good, former FBI agent that was arrested got released to help out on a missing person case (so we thought) and along the way encounters lots of obstacles.
I new author to me and one that I admire because he had no problems killing off the good guys. An interesting concept and our hero had a lot of problems getting people to believe him. One star down because I had trouble working out in my mind what was happening at the start. I'll gladly read more from this series
Thank you for the opportunity to preview Zero Hour. This is a possible series book. Ex FBI agent Eddie Virgo is our protagonist. A guy who doesn’t like the rules and doesn’t play by them either Released from a Mexican jail to help an old friend, he is not someone who takes no for an answer. Gritty and fast paced action novel. Good book however felt a bit cartoonish. 3 stars
Zero Hour is a thriller with a decent bit of action added to it. Special forces veteran Eddie Virgo is sprung from prison on a mission to rescue a senator's kidnapped daughter all while stumbling upon a national security issue. The action is well paced and engages the reader, there are some interesting twists that also occur. It's a good introduction the Eddie Virgo world.
I enjoyed this book but the early part of the book was riddled with typos and words left out or added strangely. At some point Virgo jumped into a BMW, then sped off in a “Merc” (Mercedes). Little stuff like that was fairly common. I suggest a more careful editor or a dedicated proofreader. The story held up well though.
Absolutely readable and entertaining book, with a plot that's OK. But the action feels like an old cartoon, and there's other nonsense like the function of barrel twist when shooting from a helicopter.
This is the first book by this author, and I found it enjoyable. Very OTT and difficult to believe in entirely, but this is what makes it a fun read. Fast paced and action packed, I will be coming back for more.
