This is a Romance, and this is the 35th book in the K-9 Companions series. I have read several other books for this series before picking up this book, but I think you can read this book as a standalone without any problems. I read this book by listening to the audiobook for this book, and I liked the audiobook. It was not my favorite narrator. Both the main characters have issues they have to overcome, and I love how they both helped each other. I loved the dogs in this book. This book touched my heart so much. I received an ARC of this book. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.

I absolutely loved reading about Luke and Destiny. Ms. Calhoune pulled me in from the beginning to the end. A truly, amazing, Christian emotional story filled with hope, compassion, understanding and love!! Both of the main characters are dealing with past heartache that is hard to overcome. I love that God was there every step of the way. K9, Java totally stole my heart!! I highly recommend reading The Soldiers K9 Companion!! I wish I could give ten stars instead of five!! I was given a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.

The Soldier's K-9 Companion has all of the feels, and it burrowed its way into my heart with scenes that were both heartwarming and heartbreaking. I knew from the beginning that Luke Adams suffered from severe trauma caused by a tragic incident during his time as a Navy SEAL, and that PTSD was his ongoing issue. What I didn't understand was the history of the young woman who supplied Luke with a special service dog. Was Destiny Johnson so supportive and so empathetic because she'd also endured trauma? What was the secret that she couldn't share?

Author Belle Calhoune has never been better! I loved the character development of both Luke and Destiny, along with several secondary characters who enrich their journey. And then there's Java, the special Alaskan husky service dog who becomes Luke's champion. I could use a companion like that!

This emotional story has several tough issues. but they're buffered with hope, faith, and sweet romance. I highly recommend this captivating 'friends-to-more story' that's set in Calhoun's beloved Serenity Peak!

I received a copy from the author. There was no obligation for a positive review.

THE SOLDIER’S K-9 COMPANION by Belle Calhoune is the exceptional story of Retired Navy SEAL Luke Adams and Destiny Johnson, owner of Destiny’s K-9 Dog Farm, as they learn to deal with the past, strive to move forward in the present, and dare to dream of a better tomorrow.

Luke was sure he would be a SEAL until he was old and gray, but an explosion while on a African mission that took out two of his buddies, left him feeling responsible and a shell of his former self. Now back home, he frequently suffers from PTSD. His childhood friend Charlie, seems to think that getting a service dog would be greatly beneficial. Dare he try when just driving there reminds him of the drive on that fateful day when his life so greatly changed?

Destiny was once a victim herself and still at times suffers from PTSD. Having once owned a service dog and personally seeing the change it made in her life, left her with the life goal to pay it forward by passing that knowledge and ability to gain a service dog on to others who would benefit from one so greatly. It’s taken years of training to be certified, raising funding, her grandfather allowing the use of his property and lots of hard work, but she’s making her business both profitable and of great help to those that are fortunate enough to acquire of one of her dogs. Will her insight into PTSD and her dog training skills give her the ability to help Luke?

Will Destiny find that the feelings she had for Luke as a youngster, still lingers for the grown-up man before her? Will Luke start to see Destiny as more than Charlie’s little sister? Will Luke do the work needed to make the match-up between Java, an Alaskan Husky, and himself a success? Can Destiny combat Luke’s feelings of unworthiness in order for him to see what life still has to offer him? Will Luke finally be able to turn loose of the belief he was at fault? While it may seem like two-steps forward and one-step back, will they both eventually open their eyes to all the possibilities?

THE SOLDIER’S K-9 COMPANION is a phenomenal, heart-tugging story that will have you pulling for Luke’s recovery, the success of Destiny’s dog training business and a happily-ever-after love story. Belle Calhoune gives us a story that grabs you from page one, wind itself around one’s heart and leaves us with renewed faith that things happen in God’s plan – not ours. It’s a story of second chances – both in life and love, empathy, romance, aspirations, strength, friendship, and wraps it all in a fabulous thread of faith that brings the story to life. THE SOLDIER’S K-9 COMPANION is emphatically FIVE-STAR reading that I highly recommend to everyone!

I receive an ARC of this book with no requirement or expectations of a review. All opinions are completely my own.

A sweet story about a boy and his dog and the girl who brings them together. Oh, and also a romance.

For Luke Adams, being a Navy Seal was everything. But when an attack during a mission leaves him with PTSD and survivors guilt, he returns to his small hometown where he left a hero but now believes himself to be anything but.

Destiny Johnson trains service K-9s after a sexual assault several years earlier left her with panic attacks that only her sweet service dog could help her overcome. Now she wants to give back to her community, including helping her brother's childhood best friend.

This was a very sweet, faith-affirming romance. Our leads lean on each other and God for support as they work to overcome their traumatic pasts. Destiny's grandpa was also the sweetest guy ever who always had her back.

I personally would have enjoyed to see the characters struggle a little more than they did. While both Luke and Destiny faced challenges, they opened up to each other and others very quickly. I would have preferred a little more tension and having to work a little harder to get each other to open up. However, fans of the Love Inspired line who want a quick, heartwarming story will enjoy this.

I personally wasn't the biggest fan of the narrator and the way she tried to deepen her voice for the male voices. That said she did do a variety of voices for the characters and infuse emotion into the narration so others may enjoy the narration more than I did.

Tropes:
-Military hero
-Love heals all wounds
-In love with my brother's best friend/my best friend's sister

I really enjoyed listening to The Soldier’s K-9 Companion, a heartfelt and emotional story centered around Destiny, a K-9 service dog trainer, and Luke, a former Navy SEAL returning to his hometown of Serenity Peak after a traumatic mission.

After facing a life-altering event during a mission, Luke returns home to recover and seek treatment for PTSD. There, he reconnects with Destiny—his best friend’s sister—who runs a service dog training farm. Destiny has her own emotional scars, and their shared experiences with trauma help forge a powerful bond between them.

As Destiny begins training a service dog to help Luke manage his panic attacks, the two slowly begin to support each other on their healing journeys. What starts as a supportive friendship begins to blossom into something deeper. But emotional stress, personal boundaries, and the complication of Destiny’s brother being Luke’s best friend all stand in the way. Can these two wounded souls find peace—and possibly love—together? You’ll have to read it to find out.

I appreciated the depth of character development and the thoughtful pacing of the story. Belle Calhoune handles sensitive topics like PTSD and emotional recovery with care, and the connection between Luke and Destiny feels authentic and earned. The narrator of the audiobook did a wonderful job bringing the story and its emotions to life.

Overall, this was an engaging and uplifting read that blends emotional healing with a touch of romance and the special bond between humans and service animals. I’m giving it 4 stars!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance listener copy that allowed me to enjoy this touching story.

The Soldier’s Canine Companion AUDIO by Belle Calhoune is a short and sweet romance between a service dog trainer and a returned SEAL with PTSD. Luke Adams had come home damaged; rarely left his house and had nightmares and panic attacks. His best friend, Charlie, one of the few people he saw, convinced him to visit his sister’s canine farm and see if a service dog could work for him. Since he had known Charlie’s sister, Destiny when he was younger, he agreed to visit. She convinced him and introduced him to a dog, but that didn’t make getting out of his house and making the drive to the dog farm any easier. He was sometimes late, and missed appointments, but eventually began to relax, agreeing that this could be solution for him.

Luke was a SEAL, through and through, accepting no weakness on his part and blaming himself for the deaths of his two comrades. Nothing could convince him differently. As he continued to train, he noticed signs of PTSD in Destiny, as well. Turns out she had been assaulted several years earlier and could trust no man to get close. As the training progressed, well, you know… Simple little book, yet powerful in its depiction of PTSD and of the difference a companion dog could make. The plot was elemental, yet effective.

The narrator was Aure Nash who read the book simply with an understanding of what she was reading.

An intensely emotional, hope-fuelled story that gave me all the feels. With dogs. Can it get any better than that?

The author tackles some serious subject matter through both Luke’s and Destiny’s backstories, but she does so with grace and compassion. So appreciate this realistic view of life after severe trauma and the ensuing struggles to overcome.

The friends-to-more trope plays out to perfection after a rocky start. Great dynamics between Luke and Destiny but, oy, the complications! I could really relate to the way they both held back even though the reader in me was screaming at them to just open up already! Love getting that emotionally invested in a fictional romance!

Calhoune knows how to bring depth and authenticity to her characters and that includes the secondary ones. So, add in the kind of friends who won’t let you go it alone, along with an epic small town atmosphere and you have the perfect recipe for a romance that triumphs despite impossible odds.

I listened to the audio edition of ‘The Solider’s K-9 Companion’ and thoroughly enjoyed Aure Nash’s narration. Her beautifully modulated voice was a pleasure to listen to and I love the way she breathed life into these characters. A brilliant listening experience.

My thanks to Harlequin Audio and Net Galley for providing me with an audio edition of this book.

The story of former Navy SEAL Luke Adams and K-9 trainer Destiny Johnson is heartfelt and touching.
After his last mission left Luke with not only PTSD but also with survivor’s guilt, he is having a hard time integrating himself back into civilian life.
Destiny is Luke’s best friend’s younger sister who has overcome her traumatic experience and nowadays dedicates her time and efforts in pairing service dogs with those in need. Java, the Alaskan husky, is just the dog for him. One that will help Luke deal with his PTSD.
In the midst of it all, feelings develop but each feels they are not good enough for the other. Will they realize that together they make a stronger unit?
This is a story about healing and overcoming the past . Especially in the company of a loving person. It brings to light the reality of PTSD, the after effects of experiencing an assault and the help a service dog can provide. It’s also a story about how love can support someone in the worse of times as well as the best of them. It’s a story about faith, hope, new beginnings and second chances in life.
I was entrusted a copy of this audiobook by Netgalley and Harlequin Audio. The opinions expressed are solely my own.

If you are a dog lover, you are going to enjoy this book. Java is the sweetest Alaskan Husky and this book really shines a bright light on how amazing service dogs can be and all the work and love that goes into training them. I love dogs and I was over the moon to read a story like this that does justice to the importance of our furry friends.

Luke is retired Navy SEAL who has been through a lot and is dealing with PTSD. He is trying to get his life back and isn't sure how to do it but with the help of his friend's sister, Destiny, and Java he has all he needs to start healing. In fact, Destiny and Luke are two people who both need to heal. I give so much credit to Belle Calhoune for writing a book that not only deals with PTSD but also with being the survivor of an assault. She touches on sensitive topics with such a delicate hand and gives people hope for healing. That is a gift in itself.

This was my first book by this author and it most definitely will not be my last. I found this book to be well written, emotional, hopeful and full of faith with very endearing characters (both furry and human). Thank you for writing this uplifting story. I look forward to diving into this author's past and future work.

A heartwarming story that talks about how the two main characters deal with mental health issues after traumatic events in their lives. Destiny has opened a facility to train service dogs after having her own traumatic event. She serves her community by providing a valuable service with these amazing dogs that help with all kinds of issues people have. Luke has been deployed at a Navy SEAL but his last mission ended in disaster and now his life will never be the same. He returns to his hometown in Alaska to try to pick up the pieces and fortunately, his childhood friend, Destiny, pairs him up with a wonderful service dog. Maybe they just might find love too!
The author did a wonderful job of handling this sensitive subject with care. Trauma, PTSD and other issues are not talked about enough but need to be. There is life that needs to be lived and people who go through these life-changing events can get through them with the help of a community to support them - and service dogs! Those sweet dogs provide an invaluable service.

I love it when author Belle Calhoune returns us to Alaska, where so many of her books are placed. I love the descriptions, and feel as if I’ve been there. This series is so fun to read. I’m not a dog person but I love learning what these K-9 Companions can do to help those in need of it. What smart dogs!

The Soldier’s K-9 Companion is a standalone, and gives us the story of former Navy SEAL Luke, who deals with PTSD, and Destiny, who trains K-9 Companions. Can they work together to help Luke heal? And what about Destiny’s need for healing? Secrets are never a good idea between friends.

The characters are well developed and strong. Maybe, though, not as strong as they think. We all need people in our lives, and Serenity Peak has some of the best. Do read this book and get to know the inhabitants.

I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review. All thoughts are my own.

I was looking for a book with dogs when K9 companion crossed my path. Harlequin books are my vice, I read and read because the romances are always perfect and sweet. I absolutely loved this couple, Destiny is such a sweet and gentle soul and we can see how much her dogs and the service she makes is everything to her.

Luke was a different thing, he’s ex-SEAL and we can see the struggle through the story, he has PTSD and his friend Charlie talks about the service dogs and his little sister work to help with people’s suffering. The dog is a sweet husky named Kava and I loved every moment she was part of the story.

We see the couple finding each other, both had troubles in the past and we see how understanding, long talks and all of course Kava made the romance so sweet.

The narrator was Aure Nash and she was simply perfect.

Army soldier Luke is suffering from PTSD and is hoping a special trained service K9 will help him give back part of his life, one where he can live more normally. But the trainer, Destiny, is also his sister’s best friend. Destiny pairs Luke with a Husky Java, who is sweet as can be and took to Luke right away. Destiny has issues of her own and as Java brings the two together will they get in their own way or take a chance?
This is a bit different than most of the other K-9 audiobooks I have listened too from Harlequin Audio, as this isn’t police working dog but a service dog. But none the less still a very good audiobook, narrated by a wonderful voice actor, Aure Nash. Being a veteran myself and having a friend who had PTSD I know how much these pups can help calm a person and also helps keep them from self-harm. This book is a wonderful addition to the K-9 series and means a lot to many people.

This book is part of the K-9 Companions series.! Triggers for this book include :PTSD, anxiety. I felt that there was too much religious talk for me in this story.

This story is about a guy named Luke Adams. He is struggling with PTSD being that he is a retired Navy SEAL. He hopes to get a service dog that will help him get his life back. Fortunately his best friend’s sister Destiny Johnson runs a K-9 Farm where she trains service dogs.

When Destiny pairs Luke with an Alaskan Husky named Java and teaches him how to bond with the sweet pup. Luke realizes that he and Destiny have more in common than he thought. With their friendship growing into something deeper. He wonders if a K-9 help them both face their traumas and come out stronger together. I would have liked more romance in this story and less religious talk in this story. I did like Luke and Destiny and Java in this story. I just wanted more in this story.

Welcome back to Serenity Peak! Former Navy Seal Luke Adams, wracked with PTSD and survivor's guilt, struggles with assimilating back into "regular life". At the point of having tried practically everything else, he heads to see a gal about a service dog. The K9 Dog Farm is own and run by Destiny Johnson, Luke's best friend's sister. Destiny is dealing with her own issues, as well.
Author Belle Calhoune launches into some tough topics in The Soldier's K-9 Companion, but it's done with a gentle hand. She showcases the Lord guiding Luke and Destiny through their own personal storms, leading them to realize a path walked together might just be the best thing for both of them. Grab a seat and get comfortable, because this book is a page turner! Plus it has my favorite, an epilogue!
I received a complimentary copy of this book, but my opinion is entirely my own.

Super story with a wonderful service K-9!

Destiny has survived a traumatic experience and now trains service dogs, like the one who had helped her. She is surprised when her brother's best friend Luke shows up needing a service dog to help with his PTSD. Both are survivors, and still dealing with some issues. Can K-9 Java help lead them both to a happier future? Read this to find out. There are 3 other books set in Serenity Peak that were written before this story, if you like this one.

The pace is engrossing and the tone is hopeful with a character centered storyline that has a few kisses. The characters are vibrant and endearing. The Christian ideals are subtle but bring prayer into the story regularly. This is a great feel-good story to read. Enjoy.

A Soldier’s K-9 companion by Belle Calhoune, narrated by Aure Nash. Like an x Navy Seal with PTSD from an explosion that killed his team members that was with him, leaving him with survivals guilt. Meets up with his best friends disaster and long time friend who trains therapy dogs and is dealing with her own personal trauma. I enjoyed this story with Faith, Family and healing. My only complaint is the narration. All was good until she did Luke’s part.. to me that was just not good (my opinion) Thank you to #NetGalley and #Harlequin Audio for this Arc. Couldn't put it down!!
Luke and Destiny's story was inspiring to read as they are both trying to overcome the effects their personal trauma has caused them while being at different spots in their healing and journey. Although this book does deal with heavy topics and there is a trigger warning in the beginning for PTSD and SA, Belle Calhoune was able to write it in a way that still brings feelings of hope and light to her storyline through Luke and Destiny's relationship along with Java the Husky. Definitely a great read!

A touching story of trauma and resilience and the part service dogs play in the lives of the ones who have suffered.
Navy SEAL Luke Adams has PTSD and hoping a service dog will help him get his life back. Destiny Johnson had a trauma three years ago. A service dog helped her, and now she runs a K-9 farm where she trains service dogs for others. Destiny pairs her brother’s best friend, Luke, with Java an Alaskan husky. As they start training they are growing closer. Will Java be able to bring them together?
