Dr. Xander Brown was an unhinged being and made me wonder how the hell was he the chief of surgery!! When he met Zara, he just inserted himself into her life and claimed her as his wife. Sir, where they doing that at? 👀 I get you are attracted to this woman, but you don't know her, nor does she know you; but you ready to claim her? He was just over the top with everything that he did.

Zara's confused ass didn't know what she wanted either. She was telling him no, and leave her alone, but then looking for him when he did as she asked. Girl, what do you want? She turned out to be just as crazy as Xander. 🤯

I wished that a few details were flushed out a bit more. Why was Zara's mother so timid, and not making her presence known more when it came to Quik? Did she and Quik ever resolve their differences? We learned about the mayor needing to be handled but it was not spoken of again. Did Xander and Nico give up that part of their lives? Okay read.

Xander is so unhinged and I love it. This man was so funny, he was literally mad that there was men who came before him with Zara as if he wasn’t a hoe 😭😭😭 He was so funny for that!

He does not play when it comes to Zara and I loved it. This man upgraded her life for the better. Literally got her and her family out the hood and replaced her old car with a newer and upgraded one, got her to leave her shitty job and now she has unlimited access to his funds!

Zara really won at life, got a fine ass man and rich in a matter of two seconds 😩

I loved how he had a legal job and illegal job, really balances him out 🤣

Can’t wait to read more by this author!

Had great potential but left me a bit bereft.

I enjoyed elements of this story. The MMC was unhinged and the story between the lovers fast blazing passionate love affair was interesting. He for sure was very touched in the head. His mouth was very wreckless. He was all gas no brakes behind the MFC.
His threats were not possessiveness more like obsession. The love bombing highlight was appreciated it brought out how many people accept subtle abusive behaviors without addressing it or how they break down and fold to it. I’m not sure if that was the intent but I used it as a teachable moment and discussion session nonetheless with my fellow readers. With that being said, I feel as though the author kept introducing us to elements and dynamics that were left unresolved. The tension between a young son and a mother that was all of sudden just cool with no more issues. There was a repeated thread of the mothers trauma and her going to jail behind an abusive relationship, which clearly impacts everyone yet it’s not explored or detailed really. The possessiveness and disrespect of a younger brother with his older sister that goes unchecked for sometime, then he’s just in line out of nowhere. Also with the issue between the MMC and the mom-in-law to be unresolved. There was mention of a celebrity hit, a meeting took place and a favor was called in, then, I don’t even recall it even happening so I was confused as to why it was mentioned unless I missed it. There was also a constant nod to his street life and the name “DOC” ringing in the streets, however we never get more insight into why, unless that initial market scene info was supposed to be an indication. Other than that it is no real info on details of his street life. There is also mention of his career and him being that man at work, he talks briefly about how he gained his position but no deeper details emerge. He went off the deep end once or twice as far as danger is concerned and his behavior built me up just to let me down gently. They got the happily ever after but it just seemed a little rushed for me. I enjoyed many elements of the story but just wanted more about the man himself. Maybe a deeper dive. I felt like there were missed opportunities. Or perhaps the authors intent was to highlight the many problems we face and yet we tend to move on like it’s all good with no resolution. I got that if so. Just grabbing on to whatever version of happiness you can for however long you can. Overall the book wasn’t bad at all, these are just my observations. I enjoy this author and would have loved for this story to provide a little more.

I liked the story..... I did not care too much for all the fighting, B word usage and the really unhinged couple. I wilI know in the future to skip this genre.I guess I do not understand the need to have women speak this way to one another. Shrugs.. maybe you will enjoy this storyline.

Unhinged

This story made no sense all it talked about was how crazy the main characters were for each other and just period. Doc needed psychiatric help, he did and said things that weren't normal or necessary like killing Pyro and suddenly becoming cool with the dudes favorite cousin that saw him kill him, was begging him not to, so unrealistic. The calling Zara his wife when he barely knew her name, the word obsessed was used a lot, he was an obsessed creepy unhinged stalker. I did not like this at all.

DELULU ‼️

Both MMC and FMC was both delusional. Not a bad read tho. I just feel like I needed more because the story fell short at some points. ⭐️ 3.75

Doc is WILD

It was a fun time, they went from zero to 100 so fast but they matched each others crazy. I do wish there was some resolution between Quik and his mom, I would have liked to see that on page.

doesn’t make sense

I just came to ask, what court is giving custody of a baby to a 16 year old? How did she get emancipated? Don’t you have to prove you’re able to take care of yourself? How did she do that? That minor detail about her mom getting locked up when she was 16 and she got custody of her brother when he was a baby let me know where this was going. After a few more pages I was done. And the title don’t even match what the book is about. He just had to be in the streets 🙄🙄🙄. He couldn’t just be a doctor with an edge. 🤦🏿‍♀️🤦🏿‍♀️🤦🏿‍♀️ Then he doing live streams while cutting someone’s organs out their body? Girl like where was this author going with this?

not it

I never leave book reviews but this was so terrible, rushed, unseasoned, unserious, I never want anyone to waste their time on it. No character development, no authentic plot, no story progression, no beginning, middle or end.

And honestly that was me really being generous and trying. This book was just weird. None of it made sense or was even fictionally realistic 💀 Xander was way too much and Zara wasn’t any better. In the beginning I liked her bc she was standing her ground and making him chase but literally it didn’t last but a chapter?

They were toxic and Xander was literally a nut. I’m not into toxic, crazy love. This book did have some potential, but I think the writer may have just been trying to do too much.

Q: what happens when a man decides you’re going to be his wife and have his kids, but you literally just met him and under bad circumstances?

A: You give him hell until his delusional state rub off on you and you fall in love 🥰😝.

Xander “Doc” Brown walked into a room to take care of a patient and was shell shocked by how fine his sister was and the rest was history. The instant attraction & chemistry between Xander & Zara was crazy. He was determined to win her over despite her giving him hell at every turn. Zara had been through enough and was not in the mood to give time to another dude who would waste her time. Xander said “you mines & idc what you think 😂😂😝”. He applied pressure, protected her, spoiled her and made her just as crazy as he was about her.

Xander was a true protector and man who didn’t mind spoiling his woman and I loved that. When he decided he wanted her and was serious about her loving him, he moved in that and never let up or played in her face. Nor did he let anyone else play with her either. Also, the way he took care of his brother and was coming running behind him every time was so beautiful. No matter how old they were their bond was strong and I loved that.

I love how Zara did try to fight the attraction at first lol but she couldn’t cause Doc put that hard round her throat one too many times, has her questions if her knees still worked 😂😝…. Naw but I do like that she didn’t just fold and she gave pushback when she felt strongly about something. She was also a tab bit touched as well lol so they were a perfect match.

This was a beautiful story and their love was perfect.

Potential

Spoiler alert...

This had the potential to be better than it was. But it missed the mark for me. I love an unhinged mmc just like the next but Doc was ridiculous. A killing in broad daylight, thirty million dollar organ harvesting on the black market Chief of Surgery was just an unbelievable lot. Might as well gave him super powers too. And Zara had a few marbles loose too. Then there was no follow up with the new sister. Just a book full of build up about her and less than one paragraph of meeting her at the end. Seemed very rushed. Just my opinion...

Average book with average writing and storytelling. The characters are stereotypical and not very well developed. Man of the Year would have benefited tremendously from more character development, which would have made it at least 200 pages longer - exploring the FMC Zara’s relationship with her mother and brother; exploring Quik’s strained relationship with his mother and how they repaired it; expanding on the MMC Xander’s work in the streets and at the hospital, seeing conflict between him, his staff and other women in the workplace he had relationships with; expanding on Zara and Rocky’s relationship as friends plus their relationships with cousins Pyro and Veda; and fully developing the toxic relationship between the main characters, Xander and Zara. The story could have been fuller and overall more interesting through this work. Unfortunately, I don’t recommend Man of the Year to anyone seeking a thorough story. If you’re a fan of fast paced, lightweight stereotypical characters with more drama than engaging storylines, then maybe Man of the Year is for you.

Spice rating: 🌶️🌶️ - the scenes are so rushed, I hated them

Content warnings:
Graphic: Cursing
Moderate: Sexual content, Toxic relationship, and Injury/Injury detail
Minor: Death, Infidelity, Racial slurs, Pregnancy, and Gaslighting

Star level: 5 stars Spice level: 🌶️🌶️
Trope: black love, BDE, obsession, possessive, delulu, he falls first, unhinged male love interest
Trigger warnings: death
Fav quotes: “Go to him before he clears this shit out. He can be real… unreasonable when he don’t get his way. Please see what this nigga want.”
“But you are my woman and right now you playing with that nigga life. Hear me when I say this, I’m not playing ‘bout you, Mama. I will kill niggas… hoes too behind you. Be smart on how you move. Again, you ready?”
“Look, I may be a lil’ crazy but a nigga ain’t never been delusional. You mine now so where’s the delusion in that.”
“Hear me when I say this, baby, I’m a selfish nigga. Don’t let me hear you and that nigga had conversation again. I will set this bitch on fire with you and that bitch ass nigga in it. I love you enough to make sure I’m the last nigga you love. Don’t take me there.”
“I just want you to know, I’ll kill you and tell the whole world how I lost the love of my life. Please don’t play with your life like that again, Mama.”
About the book: This book was EVERYTHINGGGG! It fed my delusional mind with a very delulu unhinged MMC. Xander was delulu from the start I mean the moment he seen Zara he was calling her his wife. For someone that is suppose the be the chief for general surgery I dont know how this man got this job. He literally inserted himself into Zara life not taking no for an answer. Island if she got did I little push back he got “hurt”. Zara was just as delulu as him After the third time meeting they were exchanging I love you. And he was ready to off any man behind her. Now Zara was trying to push back on their relationship she was balancing being the mom of her family, proving for them, and watching over her brother; so entering a relationship was the last thing on her mind but Xander was ready to step in and make it better. And that’s exactly what he did letting her know she didn’t have to worry about a thing he was ready to help her and her family. Now the ex was doing too much and got what he deserved I just wish the other lady would’ve got touched just like the receptionist. I also wish we knew what happened with her mom and brother’s relationship, and if they did the mayor mission. Other than that the book was good!

2.5 Unhinged but okay stars…

Wow, Xander and Zara are a match made in unhinged romance. The premise is that when Xander, a Chief Surgeon at a large hospital who moonlights as an organ trafficker meets Zara a shoe store salesperson whose brother is in need of medical attention, sparks fly and he instantly insists she’s he’s wife. Matters of consent, sense, and agency fly out the window as the two engage in a toxic romance towards their happily every after. This dark romance held my attention in a way but not enough that I’m invested in reading more about the Browns or continuing with the series. I think what’s missing is some more character development and more integration of back stories and supporting characters (Nico and Kelis for example) to make this make a little more sense and to understand the characters and their motivations a little bit more and to make me as a reader care more about them. Also, nothing really happens in this so that even the plot development is a little lacking. It’s just boy meets girl is rabidly in love, gives girl money and 🍆, she’s rabidly in love - the end. I’m not mad that I read this but also most likely won’t be continuing with this series.
