OH MY GODDDD I more than loved this book.

I absolutely loved McKenzie. She's so independent, lovely, mature and a hard worker. She's a very likable character. She's going through some stuff but she doesn't let it stop her from doing what she has to do or let it get her down. Tyler was soooo dreamy. This man was a grump but turned into a puddle every time he was around her. My favorite thing about him is the love he has for his daughter. This man loved his kid with everything in him and wasn't shy about letting her know.

McKenzie and Tyler were perfect together. Even when they was having a simple conversation they had insane chemistry. I do like how they had an instant attraction but didn't act up on it (well for a couple of obvious reasons but you know). They actually spent a lot of time together and got to know each other and fell in love slowly which made their s3x scenes even hotter.

"I’m not going to be away from you. My whole life has been about my career. I’ve lived my dream. It’s your turn now, and I’m going to be by your side and watch you succeed." THIS MANNN HAS ME MELTING.

This is my first book by this author and it's most definitely not gonna be my last. Looking forward to more book in this series as well 🩷🩷

🎶 "Will you still love me when I'm no longer young and beautiful?" 🎶

Tyler Danvers (H) is at the top of his game as head coach of the La Vista University Bobcats, with his team thriving and his daughter moving in to finish college. But his perfect world is upended when McKenzie (h), sports journalism student, starts shadowing his team for the semester. As she becomes his daughter’s closest friend and is constantly around—at practices, games, and even at his house—the undeniable chemistry between Tyler and McKenzie grows impossible to ignore.

─── ・ 。゚☆: THOUGHTS*.☽ .*:☆゚. ───

“You asked me to leave, remember? Why are you even here?”

“I’m here because I’m a decent human and don’t want anything to happen to you,” I yell. “I’m here because my daughter is worried about her best friend. I’m here because .

Tyler and McKenzie didn’t really have much in common besides bonding over board games and her liking football. Honestly, even though they got engaged at the end of the book and there was a four-year time jump, I just don’t see them lasting. There was nothing that really made it feel like they loved each other. From the start, Tyler was just into how she looked, and sure, he helped her out with interviews for her course, but they were in totally different places in life. He had his career, a daughter, and a whole divorce under his belt, while McKenzie's main worry was graduating college and figuring out how to pay for it. It’s not that she wasn’t mature, but it felt like they were never on the same page, and I just can’t see how they’d make it work long-term.

“I kicked you out because I was an asshole. But I’m an adult, and I can keep my hands to myself.” I hope. “Just no more late-night chats. We shouldn’t be spending time together like that.”

The “love” thing felt super rushed. I get that Tyler was there for her emotionally after her dad passed, and he was a good comfort to her, but it shouldn’t have gone any further than that. I can see her thinking he was attractive, but the fact that she was willing to risk her friendship with Kylie—after Kylie literally let her stay at her house—felt pretty messed up. I’m all for age gaps when there’s a friendship first, and then the love grows naturally, but with Tyler and McKenzie, it never felt like they were friends. It felt more like a power imbalance because she was basically homeless and he was taking care of her, making sure she had enough to save up. It didn’t feel like a relationship built on mutual feelings—it felt more like one based on necessity. Like, she was still out there partying at college, while his whole focus was his team. His identity was tied up in his sport, but somehow she was the one who changed everything. It just doesn’t make sense to me. And the whole thing about how this could ruin his reputation? How does no one think about how it would damage her as well? She’s a sports journalist, and that was just as risky for her. It was all about how bad it would look for him, but it was equally bad for her.

“Goddammit.” I hit my hand on the steering wheel, and she jumps, startled by my sudden outburst. “Of course, I fucking feel it, McKenzie. I thought that was pretty damn obvious when I stuck my tongue down your throat. You had to have felt how much I liked it, too. But I can’t feel this way for you. There’s too much at stake. For both of us.”

The relationship never even came to light in front of the team or the other coaches, so we never really got to see anyone’s reaction or how people perceived it. Not that it seemed to matter to them, since they were “hopelessly in love” and kept their relationship a secret. But honestly, it still felt like a dirty little secret. Like, they were hiding it on purpose, and that just made it all feel sketchy and kind of off. McKenzie, girl, you’re so anti-dating an athlete because of all the drama it causes, but then you go and date your best friend’s dad? How is that any better? It just didn’t make sense. She was all about avoiding the mess of being with someone in that world, but then she jumps into a whole other complicated situation. It felt like she was setting herself up for failure.

─── ・ 。゚☆: OVERALL*.☽ .*:☆゚. ───

I just couldn’t connect with their relationship at all, and honestly, I wasn’t even rooting for them to end up together. If anything, I was pretty disappointed that they did. It just didn’t feel genuine, and I wasn’t convinced they were right for each other. The fact that Tyler, at his age, still wants more kids with a 22-year-old is honestly diabolical. It just feels wrong, like he’s pushing for something that doesn’t match where she’s at in life. She’s just starting her adult life and figuring things out, and he’s already thinking about expanding his family? It felt out of touch. The fact that she’s the same age as his daughter makes it even worse. I’m all for age gaps, but I only like them when both people have been out of college for a few years and are in similar stages of life. It just feels off when one person is so much further along, and the other is still figuring everything out. It’s hard to see how that could be healthy or balanced.

I absolutely loved this book! The MFC, McKenzie, is a headstrong college student determined to finish her degree. The MMC, Tyler Danvers, is the college football coach determined to lead his team to the championship. I would definitely recommend The Penalty; it was a fantastic read that included all of my favorite tropes: age gap, best friend’s dad, forbidden romance, forced proximity

Where to begin?

Both main characters are insanely boring, lack depth, and the chemistry just isn’t there. It’s pretty much equivalent to that of a pointless Science practical they make you do in school where all you do is mix water and oil.

Writing’s ass, too. Like… show me, don’t tell me.

‘I missed her. I wanted to see her’ x50 for the next two pages rather than just showing me.

It’s like 50% dialogue too. And then when it’s NOT dialogue, it’s the most boring descriptions possible. The kiss was boring too. I didn’t even feel a little giddy or nothing.

Also, why tf did they make McKenzie’s dad die? Literally so pointless she got over it like two chapters later.

Tyler Danvers is the head football coach at La Vista University with a thriving team and his only daughter has decided to move in with him to finish college. It seems like everything is going right…until McKenzie walks into his office as a sport’s journalism student and his daughter’s new best friend. McKenzie will be shadowing Tyler and his team for the semester. Tyler shouldn’t be drawn to her, he knows he can’t have her, but their connection is undeniable.

THE PENALTY is a best friend’s dad, football romance, with an age gap of approx. 15 years. I haven’t read many age gap romances, but this one feels reminiscent of Penelope Douglas’ Birthday Girl, in terms of vibes.

I don’t know what D.C. Kile puts in her books but I have devoured every one of her books that I’ve read so far, and this one is no different. If it was permissible, I would have skipped all the things to just curl up and read this in one go.

I haven’t read many books where the FMC has my name (albeit spelled differently), so this was a little odd for me initially. I love McKenzie though – she’s smart, incredibly strong, and knows what she wants. She has an incredible support system within her family. I love the relationships she has with her parents and siblings. I also love the friendship she develops with Kylie and the friendship and relationship that she has with Tyler.

Tyler is a MMC that you can’t help but love. He’s got that rude, untouchable demeanour, but beneath that tough exterior, he’s a sweetheart with a heart of gold.

I love that THE PENALTY is told in dual POV – it’s my favorite way to read a romance. The dynamic and chemistry that blossoms between Tyler and McKenzie is so hot 🥵 and filled with tension. The spicy scenes are well placed and well written. There’s depth and an emotional punch to this story as well – keep a box of tissues nearby, you’ll definitely need it for all the tears that this story will evoke.

The ending is well done and makes for a cute conclusion to this story. There are some trigger warnings that shouldn’t be ignored, so please look those up!

I would like to thank SunnyBabePR and the author of this advanced digital copy for the opportunity to read this novel in exchange for an honest review! All opinions expressed are my own.

I’m not a big sports romance girl.
But I enjoyed this book. [probably because football. GO PACK GO]

I saw a bit of myself in the FMC, and I appreciated her unfiltered love of the sport and her drive to achieve her dreams.

I loved that there was so much conflict and tension- that the relationship wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows, it felt believable.

I loved this one so much I devoured it within one night!! Tyler and McKenzie work so well together 💖 this book had me swooning, crying, and laughing!

I had so much empathy for McKenzie with all the struggles she had going on and yet she maintained a positive attitude, though I suppose it's easier done when she had Tyler!!

I love how Tyler starts off so grumpy and we get to slowly see him show a softer side. The banter between him and McKenzie was perfect and had me giggling ☺️

So much happened and I didn't want to stop reading their story. I was so pulled in by their love for each other 🫶🏼

Can't wait to read more from this series! Thank you so much D.C. Kile and Sunny Babe PR for an ARC of this amazing book 💖

Wow! I was pleasantly surprised by how much I loved this book! It was such a fun read and I was down for it. The story had some depth and I was really attached to the characters. The spice was absolute perfection. The angst in it had me wanting more and I really struggled to put this book down. It was a super fast read as well. I really hope there are going to be more books after this one!

I loved this book and absolutely couldn't put it down. I love a good age gap book, especially with the forbidden aspect added to the mix.

I honestly loved McKenzie. She was headstrong, independent, smart, hardworking, driven, and fought through everything that was thrown her way. I loved how she never felt sorry for herself or relied on anyone to save her but worked really hard to survive on her own since she didn't want to get her family involved when they were dealing with so much already. Given her financial situation, she had to resort to living out of her car. It took a lot of courage to keep going the way she had to, but she did it, and I was glad that she had Kylie and then Tyler, who helped her out.

After missing out years of his daughter's life growing up due to his NFL career, Tyler doesn't want to miss out on this opportunity of spending more time with Kylie, getting to know each other, and building a stronger relationship now that she's moved in with him while she finishes college.

He was grumpy at first and wanted nothing to do with McKenzie, who he thought would be a liability to the team but reluctantly agrees for his daughter's sake. But as he watches her spend time with the team working on her project, he realizes just how passionate and knowledgeable she is about football and dedicated to her dream of becoming a sports journalist.

Under his grumpy exterior, Tyler was a total softie who was always present for Kylie and McKenzie. He was also extremely thoughtful and made sure both girls were always safe without being overbearing and had everything they needed. After spending years dating people who mostly wanted him for his popularity, fame, or status, he wasn't looking for any sort of relationship, but at the same time he also wished he had someone who could understand him, his passion for football, and would accept him the way he was.

I liked that this wasn't insta-lust (even if McKenzie did think Tyler was attractive given that he was a known star NFL player), but the two slowly start feeling an attraction towards each other, and as they spend more time together, they realize just how many similarities they shared. With their late-night conversations and games, they gradually feel this sense of comfort and ease with each other that they haven't experienced before.

The romance between Tyler and McKenzie felt so natural, and their chemistry was off the charts. I loved the angst in this book and the tension slowly building between these two. They did try to deny their feelings for a while due to many reasons, but the longer they were around each other, the less they were able to restrain these feelings.

The spice was definitely spicing after all that tension building between them, and I was just here like, "Kiss. Kiss. Kiss." It made the eventual kiss that much hotter after being teased for so long. I loved how commanding Tyler was and also how McKenzie didn't shy away during intimacy but instead was confident and asked for what she needed. That combination made the spice really enjoyable.

The whole situation with McKenzie's dad got me emotional, and I was not prepared for it. It truly broke my heart to see McKenzie and her entire family go through such a tragedy, and I truly loved how Tyler and Kylie both stayed present for her. I liked the way Tyler took care of her and let her process things while letting her know he was right by her side and did his best to comfort her in whatever way he could.

I liked the genuine bond McKenzie slowly built with the football team. Even when Hayes kept hitting on her at first, he eventually took the hint and turned into a good friend, even if it totally pissed Tyler off watching them together.

The third-act conflict really hits you in the feels. These two definitely went through the wringer, but in a way it was also necessary for it to happen that way given Kylie's involvement, and it made me respect both of them more—Tyler for what he needed to do and McKenzie was being mature and strong.

I really loved that epilogue, especially when we learn Tyler's decision and how much that actually said about his love for McKenzie. I also liked seeing McKenzie and Kylie mend their friendship with time.

Thank you, D.C. Kile and SunnyBabePR, for providing me with the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I think I just found my new favorite book.

This book is not just a surface-level cutesy romance. There is so much depth to our main characters, McKenzie and Tyler. I absolutely loved reading about them and was so sad when the book ended.

McKenzie is a senior in college who is going through some trying times and her new best friend, Kylie, insists on helping her. Kylie ends up being the daughter of Tyler, who is the football coach at their college.

I was so impressed with how much background we got on our characters and loved learning more and more about them. I felt the emotions our characters felt in the good times and bad times. The way they also handled all of these times was great. There was no miscommunication and their issues were handled like the adults they are.

The tension between McKenzie and Tyler was off the charts. I am obsessed with how obsessed they were with each other. Tyler was possessive of McKenzie, but understood that she was still a college student and needed to experience college life.

One of my favorite parts of this book was McKenzie and Tyler during her time with the football team. It was so nice to see her interact with not only him, but the football players as well. Once Tyler understood that she wasn't just there to meet hot football players and distract his team, she was truly able to form a bond with them and fall in love with sports journalism. This is also a time when we get small glimpses of them pining for each other with their quick glances and smiles. (I also couldn't help but smile too, because of how cute it was)

I cannot wait for book two... I just know it's going to be amazing.

I could keep going on and on about how much I love this book, but honestly, you could just pick it up and read it too.

Thank you so much to D.C. Kile and Sunny Babe PR for the ARC ❤️

The Penalty is a steamy, forbidden romance that skillfully navigates the tension of its central relationship. Tyler Danvers, a successful college football coach, and McKenzie, a determined sports journalism student and his daughter’s best friend, share an undeniable connection that sparks in every scene. This age-gap romance delivers on all the tension and longing you’d expect, making it impossible to put down.

Tyler & McKenzie’s romance is endearing and beautifully written, filled with moments of heartfelt connection and sizzling chemistry. As someone who attended a Big10 football college, I loved how the story captured the atmospheric energy of college football - the team dynamics, the game-day excitement, and Tyler’s passion for coaching brought an added layer of richness to the narrative.

That said, this was my first age gap romance and at times I found it hard to separate the fact that Tyler is McKenzie’s best friends dad, especially since Kylie came across much younger in her dialogue and interactions. Perhaps this was intentional, easing readers into their relationship dynamics but it did pull me out of the story at times.

Despite this, The Penalty is a standout, offering an emotional and captivating story with well-drawn characters and a palpable connection between Tyler & McKenzie.

To say I simply devoured this is an understatement. I couldn't put this one down. This was such a good slow burn, steamy romance.
Tyler and McKenzie were just simply perfect, their relationship was built slowly, but the tension was real.
They tried to fight it...but in the end they couldn't any longer.
I felt for McKenzie though, a struggling college senior trying to get the credits she needs and 2 jobs to make just enough, but still not enough.
And the loss she experiences. That was simply devastating.
Really enjoyed her and Kylies friendship.
But a character we can't forget is Hayes, the quarterback. 🤣🤣
I'm sorry, but he had me laughing so many times. He was trying to hard to win McKenzie over.

Loved how the ending went. I was real worried with how it was going to go after the huge shocking reveal.

Couldn't get enough and excited to see what's next.

ARC Review - 4⭐️
The Penalty is book 1 in the Tortured Hearts series featuring main characters Tyler Danvers & McKenzie.

Tyler is a former NFL star who is now coaching university football at La Vista University. McKenzie is a journalism student who gets paired to cover the football team for the term. She also becomes best friends with Tyler’s daughter Kylie.

When Kylie discovers McKenzie is living in her car, she invites her to stay at her house with her and her dad, what she doesn’t expect is her new best friend and her father would share an attraction to one another.

Eventually they act upon the attraction, sneaking around and hiding from everyone. But when Kylie discovers what’s been going on, will she force her father and friend apart forever ?

This book was very good! The forbidden aspect made it all the more interesting and I could not put it down! Thank you the Sunny Babe PR and D.C. Kile for the ARC !

✨Early Review/Release Day✨

When I saw the the tropes/premise for this one, I signed up so fast. I could barely put it down because of the interactions between McKenzie and Tyler. The way their relationship grew and changed in such a genuine way… *chefs kiss*. (Also, as a board/card game lover myself, that’s something I hope to find in a partner as well.)

Kylie was the real MVP of this book being the best kind of friend a person could ask for. She’s so caring and friendly, I admire her. I also admire how she dealt with everything that unfolds.

“This is dangerous. But I love it.”

This was a fun age gap, forbidden romance read. Tyler is a college football coach whose focused has always been football. After his separation from his baby momma he hadn’t been looking for anything serious knowing what his life is like. Then like a lightning bolt here comes McKenzie, a beautiful, smart, and sports journalist who captures his attention. He tries to maintain a boundary but after he learns that she’s been living out of her, he allows her to stay in his home until she can find a place. This forced proximity causes tension to rise and well let’s just say that when the cats away, the mice will play. 😉

I've been heading back into my sports romance era again and this book was the PER-FECT fit!
Age gap? Check.
Forbidden? Check.
Two of my favourite tropes mixed in with a low angsty love story of McKenzie and Tyler.
While it is a tad predictable story line, as a lot of romances do (it's unavoidable - especially when you read like a crazy person like me!), D C Kile's writing had me grinning like a psycho as I read. I don't know exactly what it was that made this a winner of a book for me, it just was!
All the stars!
I absolutely loved and highly recommend this book!

My first football romance?! Definitely will be reading more. I loved the age gap on this, she’s 22 and he’s 37. I always worry that with an age gap, they’ll only be physical into each other or it’ll just be lust but you could tell with this that they were emotionally all in well before anything else. They also had so much in common. This has a found family aspect in it, just a little bit and it pulled at my heart strings 🥺 I really enjoyed this, devoured in one day. If you’re a football romance lover, add this one to your tbr!

The Penalty is the story of Mackenzie, who falls in love Tyler, who is her best friend's father and coach of the football team. This had good bones and overall plot points but lacking the character development, writing and editing to bring this up any higher. Specifically, Mackenzie and Tyler are attracted to each other - why? There is a lot of detailed coverage of the football games they both attend but not on the status of their relationship. Major things happen in this book, that do not impact anyone's behavior afterwards which makes the overall story feel thin.

Review (with light spoilers) - I couldn’t put this book down! It had Spice, an age gap between characters that didn’t give me the ick, and the right amount of angst and drama while still being enjoyable and fun! I’m relatively new to the Sport’s Romance world but love a good “age gap” romance. My problem is, I usually find that one of the characters is usually a bit too immature. This book, however, took me by surprise. McKenzie who is in college for Sport’s Journalism was such an awesome example of a down-to-earth and mature character who still seemed her age. She was real and hard-working and I adored her. Both Tyler and McKenzie were very likable and their romance felt natural with amazing chemistry.

I also couldn’t rave enough about the realistic reactions to their romance from those impacted by it! I will definitely be reading more books by DC Kile in the future.

Added bonus: My husband was excited to see me reading a book in the football world (DC, I saw your dedication in the beginning and said “oh, she really gets me!”)

i'm only mildly ashamed to say that i enjoyed this one ok? it was pretty decent and a pretty enjoyable age gap romance. were there some really awkward and weird things happening? yeah. did it feel a little predatory at times? heck yeah. but i was here for it, and a lot of the problem things were actually brought up and addressed by one of the other characters so i feel like it morally balanced itself out 😅

I love a good sports romance but make it college football coach and his daughter’s best friend? I’m sold! Enjoyed this book so much!
When they finally gave in it was so good, and then when things looked like they were going to lose everything it just added to the angst!
