By golly, this family has taken us through an astonishing amount of history, from the French and Indian War to the doorstep of The Civil War. Through the installments, we’ve witnessed so many dramatic events through the trials and tribulations of The Mallory Family.

In this series, one of my favorite characters has been Ethan Mallory. Here in book eight, he’s billed as the family patriarch and as the novel opens, his family commemorates the end of his long and remarkable life. I’ll miss Ethan Mallory, and I bet the author will too. Yet I know there will always be other Mallorys to continue this patriotic family’s legacy.

This story opens in 1851 in a creaking wagon pulled by braying mules and a cussing cousin. Doesn’t that sound like a great way to open a novel?

This new generation of Mallorys features Ethan’s son Danny and Bo’s son Cal, plus their wives and children. I’m afraid of what they’ll face in the future, as the 1860s are approaching, but I’m sure that’s another story.

Author Paul Bennett is known for serving up wretched villains, and this time around the chief bad guy is Cal’s brother-in-law, Thaddeus Morton. Cal’s wife says, “That man is evil. I am mortified by the demon he has become. My own brother, a monster.” This character is so vile he barely needs his henchmen, Miles and Lars… and yet they wreak havoc too.

The author is also known for his character’s folksy dialog, which always tickles my funny bone. This time it was “I’ll be a blue-nosed gopher,” that most amused me.

A TIME FOR RECKONING features prime locations along the trails in the upper peninsula of Michigan, in the shadow of the great lake that always seems to loom nearby. As I read this novel, I felt as if I were traveling along the woodland trails with these characters.

I love reading about this family, the locations where their stories are set, and the challenges they face. Despite the vexing villains, engaging plot, and characters that feel like friends and family, what made this novel extra special for me was a giant horse named Pendragon. If I say more, I’ll spoil the ending, but I love it when horses are heroes.

Hurrah for Mallorys, past, present, and future, and thanks to the author for another fine installment in this long running series.

From the start, A Time for Reckoning grabbed me by the heart. The opening scene shook me, brought tears to my eyes, and drew me right back into the world of the Mallory Clan - a world both touching and brutal.

The author expertly leads you onto the prairies swamps and rugged wilderness of Upper Michigan, where Danny and Cal Mallory seek a new home in the town of Hannahville. Their lives are blown apart when a vicious caudillo, seeking to make the territory his own private empire, rounds up an army of native warriors and leads them on a bloodthirsty assault on Hannahville.

The tale absolutely rockets into gear as an unputdownable story of revenge. The Mallory folk have been through hell more than once before. This is a new level of darkness, yet Danny and Cal will not rest until they have their vengeance.

An utterly superb new Installment to one of the finest histfic series out there!

By all the gods, what did the Mallory family do to Paul Bennett in a past life to have him treat them this way?!

The 8th novel charting the lives of (3?) generations of the Mallory's. Once again it is an immersive, engaging tale full of action and heartache. This one tells the story of an angry native, fed up of foreigners on his land, and deciding to take the fight to them.

In his way, Danny and Cal Mallory. What follows is a brutal tale of war, of courage and comradeship, set in the wild lands of northern USA. Exposed, outnumbered, Dany and Cal face a fight for survival.

It's not one to be missed
