Womanizer. Player. Manwhore. They're all titles I've leaned into over the last few years. But I'm finally settled, working as a volunteer firefighter alongside my best friend, and being a part time EMT; I have it all. At least on paper. The thing nobody knows is that I'm a liar. A fraud. A fake. Hiding my sexuality behind a smokescreen has become second nature, and it's not good. Especially when feelings start creeping up for someone they shouldn't be.
Wyatt Serving as a police officer for the city of Seattle is exactly where i'm meant to be. I'm the gay police officer, and I'm comfortable enough in myself not to be ashamed of it. Sparks fly when the local firefighter crosses my path, but with his reputation, it's clear to see he's not ready for more. Friends by day, lovers by night, but how long can it stay that way? Am I enough for him to start a life together with, or am I just a fun phase that he will soon get tired of?

Oliver’s journey from cocky womaniser to vulnerable man reckoning with his truth is handled with nuance, even if at times his internal tug-of-war can feel repetitive. Wyatt, on the other hand, is a beautifully grounded character; confident in his identity, but not immune to the emotional toll of loving someone who isn’t fully out.
The chemistry between Oliver and Wyatt is undeniable, and their nighttime trysts are as steamy as they are tender. But what really elevates this story is the emotional tension, the fear of rejection, the ache of secrecy, and the hope that love might be worth the risk. There are a few tropes at play that feel familiar, but the author adds enough sincerity and depth to keep it from being cliché.
A significant portion of the story focuses on Oliver’s internal struggle with coming out; when to do it, how to do it, and who deserves to know. The emotional weight of these moments is captured with raw honesty, making his journey both powerful and a deeply moving experience. I would have liked to see a little more development around Oliver’s growth toward self-acceptance. It felt a bit rushed at the end.
Told in first person, the narrative primarily shifts between Oliver and Wyatt’s perspectives, offering a clear window into their thoughts and emotions, with one chapter from Ray, Oliver’s best friend, POV adding a fresh layer to the story. The setting is kept tight, centred mostly around their homes and workplaces, an intentional choice that suits the story’s length and keeps the focus sharp.
Still, this is a compelling read about identity, love, and the bravery it takes to be honest with yourself and the person who matters most.
🔥 When friendship burns into something deeper, can love survive the secrets left in the ashes? 🔥
In Devastated by Fire, Lizzie James delivers a raw, emotional MM romance between two first responders navigating their identities, their pasts, and a connection they never saw coming.
Oliver has it all—or so it seems. As a part-time firefighter and part-time EMT, his life looks picture-perfect. But beneath the confident, womanizing surface, he’s hiding a secret. His sexuality is buried under years of bravado, and his fear of being exposed keeps him from anything real.
Then there’s Wyatt—the openly gay Seattle police officer who’s proud, grounded, and not afraid to speak his truth. When sparks fly between him and Oliver, he’s drawn in, even knowing the risk: falling for someone who might never be able to fully fall back.
By day, they’re brothers in blue and red. By night? Something more. But how long can Wyatt play pretend before it breaks him? Can Oliver break free from his fears and admit what they have is real?.

"He made me feel like a lit fuse, and only he had the power to extinguish my light." - Wyatt
"The world may have been judging us, but right now, being here with him, I came to realize that it didn’t matter." - Oliver
This book focuses a lot on Oliver's coming out to friends/family/co-workers and their secret relationship. Oliver was very stressed and worried about coming out and Wyatt listend to all his feelings around it, Wyatt is so patient with him and supports Oliver however he can. Oliver is scared of what his best friend Ray and his work would say about his relationship. Oliver is an EMT/Firefighter and Wyatt is a police officer. A lot happened very quickly but for them it felt right. Even though Oliver was scared and having a relationship with a man and that was new for him, it felt right and he explored with Wyatt. I really liked their friends and that Wyatt reminded Oliver to take his time and come out at his own pace. They care a lot about each other.
A journey of self-discovery & being honest with those you love.
The draw between Oliver & Wyatt is hard to deny, when they keep making eyes at each from across emergency scenes. Wyatt as police officer & Olliver as a firefigher & EMT, they cross paths all the time. The only problem is. Wyatt is out and Oliver is a question mark. The attraction is obvious from their first on page encounter.
This first responder love story swirls with self-discovery, high lust, family affairs, mettling friends & an instant attachment between O & W.
joining Oliver for his self discovery was heart warming and also sad. Like anyone coming out, he really struggles with his loved ones accepting him. But he is highly supported by Wyatt throughout the entire process.
And boy do they move fast lol. What can you do when you love someone so completely?
Overall, it was a great book to kick start off Pride month and is filled with some spicy lusty encounters, love, struggles and a bit of a fear.
Devastated by Fire has a solid premise—an MM romance between a firefighter and a police officer, with one of them, Oliver, struggling to accept his sexuality. The setup had potential for emotional intensity and slow-burn tension, but for me, it fell a bit flat.
The storyline moves quickly, and while I usually enjoy a fast-paced romance, this one felt too rushed. The dialogue and inner monologues were very straightforward—almost too on-the-nose—and didn’t leave much room for nuance or deeper emotional layers. I found myself wanting more introspection, more tension, more feeling between the lines.
Wyatt and Oliver’s connection felt surface-level, and the book didn’t explore the complexities of coming to terms with identity or building trust in a meaningful way. It’s not a bad book, just a bit too simple for my taste.

I didn’t vibe with much about Devastated by Fire. Wyatt and Oliver are likable enough, but two-dimensional. They have some sweet, funny moments with secondary characters who are also one note. The MCs’ few character traits are mostly stated, not shown. Their mutual attraction is solid at the beginning, but their connection becomes mired in hopping from one sex scene to another, without enough intimate moments that aren’t preludes to sex. Their one-month relationship consists mostly of sex and worry, so the development is shortchanged.
The writing is straightforward and mostly fine, though there are some inappropriate verb tense changes and odd word choices and phrasing. The prose and dialogue can be stilted and very repetitive.
I didn’t vibe with much about Devastated by Fire. Wyatt and Oliver are likable enough, but two-dimensional. . . Their one-month relationship consists mostly of sex and worry, so the development is shortchanged. . .The prose and dialogue can be stilted and very repetitive. Conversations about Oliver coming out, his friends’ assurances he can tell them anything, etc. are almost verbatim, and they appear a lot. There is no other plot, so it’s a tiresome merry-go-round. . .The timeline is also inconsistent. . .Wyatt admits that he’s selfish and wants everyone to know that Oliver is his, but can be a real asshole about it. e.g. Wyatt blames not sharing personal details on them not being out together. . .There's drama for the sake of drama, and it’s this emotional hopscotching that keep things from feeling earned or reasonable.
Part time firefighter and EMT Oliver has a reputation as a ladies’ man but since meeting police officer Wyatt, he’s been experiencing unexpected feelings. Wyatt is confident with his sexuality and reaches out to Oliver to offer him support, initially hiding his own feelings for Oliver. With Wyatt’s support and patience, Olivier is able to be open about his feelings and to explore an intimate relationship with Wyatt. This book is packed with vulnerability, passion, care and love and immerses you in what it might feel like to explore your sexuality and the worries about coming out to family and friends. The author has created a beautiful and moving story full of heart and genuine, relatable characters who will captivate readers. Highly recommended to all.

First responder MM romances were not something I had ever thought to read, but I think this may have convinced me to seek them out.
This story primarily focuses on Oliver, who is a part time EMT with a bit of a reputation for being a ladies man. When he meets Wyatt, who is a police officer, he starts to question his feelings and sexuality. Wyatt is confident in his sexuality and is immediately attracted to Oliver, so when he starts to feel like maybe Oliver is questioning himself, he reaches out and offers support.
This book moved pretty quickly, yet it didn’t feel rushed. It was filled with tender moments, passion, vulnerability and a whole lot of care. I especially loved the found family aspect to this story. Oliver’s best friend, Ray, can tell that Oliver is going through something and is constantly checking in and offering support and although there’s a bit of hurt feelings when it all comes out, Ray is nothing but supportive of Oliver.
Devestated by Fire follows Oliver, a part-time firefighter and EMT known for his flirtatious reputation, as he grapples with unexpected feelings for police officer Wyatt. Wyatt, confident in his sexuality, initially offers Oliver support while secretly harboring his own emotions. With Wyatt’s patience and encouragement, Oliver finds the courage to explore his identity and embrace their intimate connection. The book is a deeply moving tale of vulnerability, passion, and love, immersing readers in the emotional journey of self-discovery and coming out. Featuring heartfelt storytelling and relatable characters, it delivers an authentic and captivating reading experience.
A gorgeous story about the angst of coming to terms with your sexuality and coming out and all the anxiety and emotion that comes with it.
Cocky womanising firefighter, Oliver and out and proud police officer, Wyatt start hooking up after becoming friends. Their chemistry is intense but Wyatt wrestles with being a secret and the ever looming threat of their relationship ending.
Oliver isn’t out and he wrestles with the idea of what his family, friends and coworkers will think. Wyatt shows so much acceptance and support for Oliver. This my favourite type of story when it comes to an awakening. A supportive partner, love, patience and not to mention spice 🔥
Just loved this book. Wyatt is a police officer who is known to be gay and has developed a crush on Oliver, a firefighter he thinks is straight. Oliver had a reputation for being a serial dater but never staying with a woman longer than a week or two. Oliver notices Wyatt and looks for him at every fire but doesn't know why. Their HEA is very well-written and has romance, danger and humour making it a page-turner.

The story was good. A sweet and complicated coming out, dealing with feelings book.
Oliver was a part-time EMT wanting to be a firefighter, and Wyatt was a beat cop. They had a lot of chemistry, Wyatt was openly gay while Oliver was "straight" and known as a "womanizer"
Oliver was struggling with his feelings towards Wyatt and how to manage it all while not getting fired for being gay. He was so in his head about everything. But Wyatt was the most charmingly patient man. He was there with him every step loving Oliver in secret.
Their story was sweet and good. I enjoyed the book overall.
Have a box of tissues ready. Wyatt and Oliver will keep you on an emotional roller coaster until the very last word. This story is as heart wrenching as it is heart warming. These guys will burrow.their way into your heart. The entire journey is really beautiful. Don’t miss out on this love story. This is one of those books that will stick with you , the kind where you want to warn your friend after you insist they read it but you don’t want to spoil any of it for them.

Thank you, Lizzie & Chaotic Creative, for my copy of Devasted by Fire. This was original published as a short novella, Firehouse 13 series. This was my first book by Lizzie James and I will definitely be reading more. This book was 🔥 not just because Oliver is a firefighter. Devastated By Fire also had a whole lot of heart. Wyatt & Oliver got their HEA but then Lizzie turned this book upside with a twist.
Things I ❤️ 🚨 Awakening 🚨 Firefighter 🚨 Police Officer 🚨 First Love 🚨 Prologue 🚨 Dual POV 🚨 HEA
Due to his job working as a firefighter/EMT, Oliver and policeman Wyatt cross paths quite often in the field. Oliver feels a pull of attraction towards Wyatt but as far as Wyatt can tell, Oliver is nowhere near ready to be open in the way that Wyatt is. However, Wyatt is willing to figure things out along the way as they begin secretly seeing each other.
I found the way that Wyatt was honest with Oliver, and how Wyatt encouraged him to be the same right back, refreshingly blunt in a way without malicious intent. Most of their strain is of course from keeping their relationship a secret, as Oliver’s best friends are rather nosey in the ways they show they care, yet I liked how Wyatt handled things and found myself agreeing with him a lot of the time. Overall, I did like them together and was happy with their HEA.
Oliver is a part time EMT/firefighter and Wyatt is a cop. In the story Oliver is struggling with his feelings for Wyatt and struggling to come out. I liked how Wyatt was patient with Oliver but some parts did seem repetitive I wish the ending wasn’t as rushed as it. Overall it was a good quick read

Liam’s carefully controlled world is upended when he meets Gregg, an openly gay cop who sees through his defenses. As their connection grows, Liam is forced to confront his fears and decide if he’s ready to live, and love, out loud. A quick, emotional MM romance about identity, courage, and unexpected sparks.

Life will never be dull. Oliver, is a firefighter-EMT in his hometown. Even thought he has a bit of a reputation, he's trying to overcome it. Wyatt is a cop, he's ready for his forever man. He and Oliver meet during a case. There's attraction, but Oliver must overcome his reputation to try to earn Wyatt's regard. Great flow, nicely done. Absolutely likeable characters who are sweet. Nicely done. I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.
It's a good story. It didn't take my breath away, but the story and characters are solid. Oliver is known as a womanizer, but the reality looks a bit different when he laid first eyes on Wyatt. Oliver is discovering his new feelings towards Wyatt. Wyatt is super supportive, and they take things slow. All the trouble, and courage that comes along with a coming-out. It's a nice afternoon read.
Fast burn, cop x firefighter (that sometimes doubles as EMT), bi-awakening, urban setting
Not sure if this book is connected to others but it felt like a third book in a series. There seemed to be a whole other world that was set up beforehand that we're expected to know from how the beginning was laid out, so I'm not sure if this is part of some interconnected standalones.
Understandably, I got an early copy so there was a few mistakes (like saying they were in Chicago and then a few pages later, saying they're in Seattle, so I wasn't sure what the setting was except a city). Also a few UK English phrases and words that slipped through which made me think it was in the UK, but probably just wasn't caught by the editor to convert to American English.
Just very small issues I noticed, but overall a good/ok story of Wyatt guiding and helping Oliver discover being with a guy and navigating their attraction to one another.
A shortish book with some very appealing characters. Wyatt was really supportive. Oliver's struggle with the idea of coming out was very understandable but became a bit repetitive and was then done in a bit of a rush. The medical situation at the end made very little sense. It's still a good short read.
Not only do we get a bi awakening story for Oliver when he develops feelings for Wyatt that take him a while to be open about! But the author also gives us a well-written storyline that is romantic with elements of danger and humour! Superb! Highly recommend.

I always have a lot of compassion for characters stuck in place and hiding their true self. Whether it be sexuality, job, or whatever, it's hard not losing yourself while you're pandering to someone else's expectations. I think Oliver was stuck in this loop. He needed Wyatt. I was a little more emotional reading this. It was really good and definitely worth the read for me.
Oliver is a part-time firefighter and EMT. He has felt stromg in his sexuality that was until he meets Wyatt a police officer. We follow Oliver as he struggles with his feelings and is working through them. I enjoyed the vulnerability shown by Oliver's character and the way it affects his everydau relationships without him realising highlighting the struggles members of the LGBTQ+ community face.
3.5⭐️s. I enjoyed Oliver and Wyatt’s story, Wyatt was patient with Oliver who was struggling a bit internally and with coming out but the story was sweet and they had good chemistry but it was a bit repetitive in places but overall a decent read.
First time read by this author and I am pleasantly surprised by the quality of the story. When initially starting, it seemed that the author was very superficial with absolutely no depth or understanding of the subject. Upon further reading however, the events began to show the opposite. The support of the firehouse teammates, Oliver’s mother, and Ray/Emma were a delight to read.
There were a few various things this one touched on. The most rememberable one was the effect coming out has on a person and those around them. Lizzie handles this topic well, addressing every circumstance individually. And, Wyatt’s patience was such a great example of how a partner should be! Even though it took me a while to get into the story, the time taken to write this story was shown throughout the words!
↓↓ This was a first from this author and honestly I just didn't vibe with the characters or the overall story.
Some of the wording was a bit cringe and seemed a little juvenile me. It didn't seem like it was cohesive and didn't know which direction it wanted to go. It just didn't match for me.
Oliver really struggled with coming to terms with his feelings. While Wyatt was very patient.
They did have amazing chemistry and they did get their HEA but it felt a bit rushed at the end.
