Listen, I LOVE Zodiac Academy, so I was really excited to pick this up since it’s set in the same world. It gave prequel vibes (though don’t quote me on that, but there were a few clues that led me to believe that’s the case). Honestly though, I’m not sure why so many people are raving about it—I found it a bit underwhelming.
Lets start with the positives...The ending was strong, and I did enjoy some of the worldbuilding touches that expanded on the universe I already love. There were also a few intriguing twists and moments of tension that kept me intrigued, especially toward the end. I can see the potential in the story, and there’s definitely a foundation here that could (maybe?) grow into something bigger in the next installments.
That said, overall I just didn’t feel a connection with any of the characters, which is one of the things I adore most about Zodiac Academy. The characters there are unforgettable, but here they felt flat. Even the two potential MMCs didn’t have much pull—they’re nowhere near the level of Orion or Darius, even if the story is aiming for a truer than true enemies-to-lovers vibe with the slowest of slow burns.
My biggest struggle was the pacing. The book felt far too long for how slowly the plot moved, and that made it drag in too many places. Overall, It wasn’t horrible, but it definitely wasn’t a favorite—especially disappointing because I love Zodiac Academy so much. In a lot of ways, it felt like a less exciting version of ZA, without the unforgettable characters and relationships that made me fall in love with that series. At this point, I’m not sure how I feel about continuing with the series, because I did think that overall this book by itself was just mehhh.
Maybe I’m just in a romantasy slump 🤷♀️, but overall this one left me disappointed.
