"More than just a biography, this book provides inspiration, pride, and joy in the journey." - Booklist
Meet award-winning actor Pedro Pascal—once just an imaginative kid obsessed with movies. Born in Chile, Pedro spent his early years in San Antonio, Texas, where his family found asylum during the years of the Pinochet dictatorship. Fueled by the passion for cinema and theater that his parents encouraged early on, Pedro would attend NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and immerse himself into reading screenplays and watching classic movies. Pedro Pascal would eventually become a household name, best known for his roles on Game of Thrones, The Mandalorian, and The Last of Us.

A fun read for all ages! This book is chock full of facts about the life and journey of Pedro Pascal. The author covers a variety of pop culture and Latin American history as she journey's through Pedro's life, with many "guest stars" along the way. The small pop outs to describe complex ideas or vocabulary are helpful for young readers, though some of the jargon of Hollywood is missing later on as we read about Pedro's most recent rise to fame.
Overall, this is a quality chapter book written in an approachable format. As a parent, I'd happily share it with my child. The idea of the 'Hispanic Star' franchise is also welcome representation in the children's literature space.
This honest review is provided in connection with my receipt of an ARC copy through NetGalley provided by the generous staff of Roaring Brook Press and Macmillan Children's.
I enjoyed reading Hispanic Star Pedro Pascal. The biography is fleshed out and educational. It was appropriate for middle school grades and perhaps some precocious younger readers. I loved the explanation of roles, places, projects and people. I’m guessing Bad Bunny’s information wasn’t included because there is a book about him in this series of books.
I could have done without the Superman analogies and quotes. The readers guide in the back is pretty heavy handed with it and compares Pascal’s journey to Joseph Campbell and The Hero with a Thousand Faces. I do appreciate the intention for young Latinx to look up to Pascal and Hispanic Stars in the series.
I was torn about the drawings, wanting them to have slightly more detail and have more of the sketches look like Pascal. I am certainly a fan of Pedro Pascal and the authors’ intention to educate and teach literary structure. I just could have done with more story and less critique. Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan and Roaring Brook Press for an advanced digital read.
Thank you NetGalley and Roaring Brook Press and Macmillan Children's for an early copy in exchange for an honest review!
This was adorable! Even though Pedro doesn't want a movie about his life to be made, I would 1000% watch it! Pedro's life is anything less than incredible. All the trials and tribulations he went through. The family dynamics. Waiting for his big break into Hollywood. It was all incredible. I loved how each chapter started with a quote from Superman, a film he missed out on as a child. It always felt important and relevant to each chapter. I also really enjoyed the further explanation of things that a middle schooler might not understand. I mean, there were things I learned just from reading this book! The artwork wasn't my cup of tea. Some of the images I wasn't 100% sure what it was suppose to be of and others I thought were great. Overall, I enjoyed this book quite a bit!
Thanks to NetGalley & Macmillan Children's Publishing Group for the early copy in exchange for an honest review.
A fun read! I like how the author used the Superman 1975 example and paralleled Clark Kent's journey with Pascal's life. It was a pretty creative way to get kids interested. I also really liked the art throughout the book--hope they consider adding real pictures of Pascal and his family in the future though.
The only thing I wish was that Pascal himself was interviewed directly for the book. They pull quotes from various magazines and news throughout the years but it would've been neat to hear his more recent thoughts on his popularity. Still, a solid read and will be a great modern addition to the kids' biography section!
Received NetGalley arc. A wonderfully concise story of Pedro Pascal's life and how he made his dreams a reality. Fans don't get to know everything there is to know about every star that they like, but even as a personal fan of Pedro, I did not know much about him going into reading this book, but I truly enjoyed learning more about him. As I would imagine, those that would want to read this book will at least have a passing interest in him and if even that is the case, I think that it will be well worth reading. I learned what he had to go through to be where he is today and even discovered some of the things that he starred in before I knew of him. He seems to be growing into a bigger star with every passing day and it is very much well deserved and earned.
My middle school kids and I had such a good time reading this book and learning all about Pedro Pascal. You really can’t go wrong with kids when you consider he has starred in quite a few shows that they love. This book gives mostly basic information on where he immigrated from. His family and early career. And finally the shows that have made him a household name.
Nice little bite-sized biography. I believe this will be a good book for students. I enjoyed that each chapter started with a quote that had a consistent theme.I would recommend a physical copy. The book gets cut up strangely as an electronic copy, and it messes with the flow of the book.
NetGalley gave me an ARC of this book to review and at the time I didn’t realize it was a book for middle schooler. With that being said it was cool to learn a lot about Pedro and his life before fame!
As a big fan of Pedro I knew i had to give this book a read. I must say there is plenty of information included and i did learn quite a bit about him and his interesting history and upbringing. A great book for a younger audience that will surely inspire others!
Thank you to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for a chance to read and review this book.
I have been seeing these kids books around but never read one myself, but when I saw this one was about Pedro I needed it. I love Pedro as a person and enjoy the work I have watched so far of his.
I learned so much about Pedro, a little about Latin culture and just had such a fun time reading this cute little book. I can't wait to check out more in this line of books.
