An interesting biography of M. Sasek, a Czech-born artist and illustrator, who left for Paris to study art and worked at Radio Free Europe in the 1950s. He is best known for his "This is" series of children's books, introducing the young to the world's most famous cities, written in 1959 and the 1960s. In the afterword, he is aptly described as a "portrait painter of cities." It was nice to see a compilation of his art.

Libro para el máster. Lo vimos en clase como referente, y me encantó. El profe recomendó el libro porque recoge y explica los distintos libros que hizo sobre ciudades dirigidos al público infantil (me considero un tanto adulto y a mí me han encantado). También cuenta un poco de su vida, claramente trabajo soñado: viajar por todo el mundo, hacer bocetos y dibujos de las ciudades que te tocan, y encima te pagan....wow. Los apuntes sobre esas ciudades de los años 60-70 tan visitadas hoy en día me han parecido muy interesantes, se le ve un hombre gracioso.


Me lo he leído en inglés, tampoco es un texto muy largo ni muy complicado, pero en mi mente ya tengo el C1.

Als kleuter had ik het boek This is London getekend door Sasek, heerlijk boek vond ik. Het was zo ontzettend herkenbaar Londen, waar we altijd overstapten op doorreis naar Schotland. Hij wist de stad zo treffend te tekenen en ik hield toen al van zijn stijl en humor met oog voor detail. Het boek heeft mijn jonge jaren niet overleefd, maar gelukkig heb ik later ooit een herdruk kunnen kopen.
Dit boek laat veel van het werk van Sasek zien, geweldig! Van mij had er nog wel wat meer getoond worden van zijn overige werk, zijn affiches voor de reclamewereld bijvoorbeeld. Qua tekst over zijn werk en leven is het boek wat droog en mager van stof, dat kost het boek een ster, maar er bleef genoeg over en het is een erg mooie gedrukt.

This book offers a peek into the life of Miroslav Sasek, known for his travel city guide books for children. I was not captured by the narrative but what a treat to see the artist's paintings and graphic work, and to revisit the guide books themselves, This Is Paris being the first. A huge talent.

I own several of these in my library and in my home library was gifted This is Edinburgh. His travel books are wonderful and this book about him is so well done, captures the feel of his own work and yet showing much of his. Some personal history, not too much, he still carries an air of secrecy which is not a bad thing.

I've read most of M. Sasek's books, and when I heard about this biography of him, I knew I'd want to read it, too. Fortunately, my library was able to get me a copy through inter library loan. Really enjoyed reading about Sasek's life and work.
