Age of Glass: A Dungeon Core Dark LitRPG Adventure

Rate this book
The Age of Glass dawns, a fragile era balanced on the edge of oblivion. Will it shatter beneath the relentless hammer of fate?

From the depths of despair to the pinnacle of power, Matt's ascension to Dungeon Lord has been a crucible of blood and terror. But the higher he climbs, the more precarious his perch becomes. As winter's icy fingers close around his hard-won domain, Matt and his beleaguered allies yearn for respite. Instead, they face a nightmare beyond imagining.

The Coronaught infection sweeps through the land like wildfire, twisting human flesh into abominations that defy sanity. Grotesque mutations stalk the shadows, their hunger insatiable. In this maelstrom of horror, Matt must be more than a leader – he must become a legend.

With each agonizing decision, the weight of command threatens to crush his spirit. Can he salvage the humanity of the infected, or will the price of compassion be too steep? Nuclear fire looms on the horizon, a cleansing inferno that promises annihilation. How much of his soul will Matt sacrifice to shield his people from the coming storm?

In the bowels of the earth, Matt labors to transform his dungeon into an impregnable fortress. But in a world where loyalty shatters like spun sugar, yesterday's allies may become tomorrow's executioners. Survival exacts a terrible toll, paid in blood and betrayal.

Step carefully into the Age of Glass, where every triumph balances on a knife's edge, and a single misstep can leave you bleeding in the dark.

The story was all over the place

Still filling the series but this read was like watching a bunch of chickens running around with their heads cut off. The plans change every 2 seconds. A lot of unnecessary rants. And fluff. The earlier books were better but I'm still willing to see the series through

I tried. I really did.
I mostly enjoyed the previous books, and really wanted to read how the story continues … but I could not finish this one. There’s a lot of the same stuff over and over, extended descriptions about how they’re calculating various things, preaching/lecturing on various subjects with a lot of swearing involved, and then sometimes I just don’t understand how Matt just totally forgets about important things. Why bother assigning skill points, stats, etc before a big fight?
And how he can get beat up by level 1 nothing monsters all the time. He has at least 4x higher stats than almost anything he fights, but is constantly in danger.

Unfortunately this series will go into my “could not finish” list …

Rating: 3.5 stars

I’ve binged the first five audiobooks in this series and just finished the sixth on Kindle, so I think it’s finally time to get my thoughts out. This series hooked me right from the start and is already one of my favorites. That said, I really wish Aly would’ve suffered some quiet, mysterious accident by now. At this point, she’s graduated to a whole new level of raging [bitch]—it should be available as class of its own.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the depth of these characters and how they’ve grown, but Aly has gone from an interesting addition to an absolute headache. Honestly, the side characters are the ones keeping me invested—they’re the only ones who seem to have any common sense left.

The plot itself is great in theory, full of potential, but the execution? That’s a different story. By now, it feels like we’re stuck in a loop: Matt tries to focus on his power progression, something actually useful, but then Mike or someone else does something stupid, and Matt has to drop everything to fix it. How is he supposed to be this powerful mage when his mana regen is so ridiculously bad? He throws a few shields, maybe a bolt or two, and then has to dig into blood magic just to keep going? It’s painful to read.

And don’t even get me started on his personal growth—or lack thereof. Matt’s turning into a guy who just gets distracted all the time doing the job his council was formed to do. Like, that whole meditation space scene? Mike and the others trying to guilt-trip him into turning his only sanctuary into some group hangout? No. That’s their job to figure out, not his. Literally . Yet somehow, Matt’s the one getting chewed out, and I just wanted to scream at the book.

Honestly, I’m on the fence about continuing the series. The potential is still there—it’s what keeps me hooked—but I’m running out of patience. If Matt doesn’t start actually evolving (and stop being everyone’s errand boy), I might have to let it go. Here’s hoping the next book finally delivers.

Having ranted this far, though, I really feel like pointing out that this is a great story and series. I genuinely hope Jez Cajiao keeps writing and improving because there’s so much potential here. Art is meant to be shared, and I’m grateful you shared yours with us.

The series has gone to hell ever since Matt stopped being able to regenerate mana. He is supposed to be many times stronger than he was back then, but he can’t walk in the rain without it draining all his shield mana. He is a “storm god” and rain on his shield defeats him. He hasn’t thrown lightning bolts in a long time, and maybe used incinerate once. He can’t even cycle the mana without running out.

This ties into another huge gripe I have. The writer doesn’t have the chops to write believable fights at this point. Matt comes across as a limp noodle. He can’t walk down a hallway without spraining his ankle. He is the clumsiest loser on the planet. Then he goes back to the dungeon after barely pulling a win out of his ass and everyone talks about how much they need him and how powerful he is. The people in the book talk about how amazing and powerful he is and yet, I, as a reader haven’t read a single sentence to support that.

Stats haven’t mattered in a long time as well. They are completely pointless. He is a strong and fast as the writer says he is at any given time and since the writer is too heavy handed in the fights and can’t scale them up at all, he may as well have no stats.

It's great!

I've really been looking forward to this book for a long time and it didn't disappoint me. There was plenty of action. Main characters who weren't total idiots tried to plan ahead and strategic and thoughtful ways. There's also the chaos of war that sometimes rendered these plans. Ineffective just like they would in real life. It kept all the action feeling a palpable tension to it. It made every victory feel earned and at no point did it seem inevitable that the hero would triumph. I'd give more concrete examples, but that would take away from anyone who wanted to read the book. The surprise and the sense of attention would be destroyed for you. If you like previous books in the series, you're going to like this. If you didn't like previous books in the series, you're not going to like this and you just have very different taste and books. Looking forward to the next one in the series. I'm glad that this author writes at a very good clip. His arise series is great too and finished. I'd also recommend it. Hope this review helps you apologize for any spelling errors. I wrote this review with voice to text

amazing LitRPG Novel!!!

Very unique LitRPG novel!  Jez is the top LitRPR author, for sure.  His ideas of incorporating levels, classes, and magic into a wonderful fantasy story are more realistic than any other.  The Rise of Mankind series offers a unique twist on the apocalyptic concept that many LitRPG novels are based on.  The characters are so realistic, with engaging dialogue, amazing growth, and believable personalities.  The plot twists are awesome and completely surprising.  And, Jez knows how to write a battle scene like no other: puts you right into the fight and draws graphic fight scenes in the mind just like you're watching an epic fight scene in a movie!  And, the depth of the characters' growth with magic!  Wow!  It's as if Jez knows how to cast these spells and control Mana and is just teaching us... well, he sure does know the spell of being a Master Wordsmith!  Thanks Jez for another stellar novel!  And, if you haven't read his other books, when you finish Rise of Mankind, you have to read Arise and UnderVerse!

Great world building and unique ideas.

When I first started reading this series I was unsure. Frankly, the first few chapters did not have me enthralled. However, I'm now deeply into this series. The one problem I have at this point is just the main character's woman doubting him because another woman pledged her sword to him. The main character has shown no interest in any other woman. I hate that author 's write women as being jealous. Kelly is an educated, gorgeous, sure of herself woman. To me it is not believable that she would believe her man would look at anyone else. And frankly, a woman like Kelly would know it doesn't matter if another woman wants her man. That's not going to have any bearing on her relationship with him. I hope the author gets past this.

Dungeon upgrade

Matt never seems to get a break as he faces yet again more threats from local and regional enemies. With so many issues and so many of his own under danger, his next one may just be the last straw for the entire UKs survival. Just another day at the office expand/evolve/exist and maybe some good company with those he loves makes this a fascinating and involving read for any old or new fans. The world is also really expanding out on the magic side as we get even more hints about the future of the worlds survival and just how Matt may survive long enough to ensure humanity and it's newest creatures survive the storm.

Kinda upset at the lack of care from Matt about the characters that did die. I’m really glad a lot of my favorites have stayed alive, and I hope it stays that way because I think this story now needs to evolve now and be more about greater conflicts than worrying about certain people, which I think it’s done a fairly good job of in general, I just liked fingers and ramnik a little more than I maybe was supposed to. The expansion and evolving is really satisfying, I’m nervous about how sci-fi this is going to get though because I really prefer fantasy if it’s not Star Wars.

onward and upward!

It’s book 6 in a great apocalyptic dungeon core action horror setting. The dungeon is starting to mature as is Matt. I really enjoyed getting to see the progress starting to pay off and some of the consequences of past choices starting to play out. Trying not to be too spoiler-y but there’s awesome action, creepy bad guys, and good jokes as expected from this series, what’s not to love!?

worst book in the series

The first 25% is minutiae about the dungeon. It could have pretty much all been cut out. The plot is also terrible. The armed forces attacks the MCs people without provocation. The MC reacts by agreeing to let one of the main perpetrators leave with a large section of the army and takes on responsibility for feeding and housing the rest. In what world does this make sens? Not sure if I can continue the series.

it’s odd

Every book is titled as the level of dungeon they are struggling to advance to, yet they only advance at the end.

Some really fun ideas and intricate plotting. There *were* a few times that information felt repetitive, but since most of that info only appears once per book it’s easily forgivable.

Looking forward to 7.

Awesome adventure continues

The MC and his horde fight monsters, both alien and human. From a couronaut queen and her mind stealing vrums to escaped prisoners that took over a town. The politics of establishing a safe haven in a post apocalyptic world, while jumping the frying pan into the fire.

The epilogue was awesome as it reveals new trials to overcome.

3.999 stars! I love seeing Matt struggle to be a leader and being impulsive or regretful; it makes him multi-faceted. He might be overpowered when it comes to abilities, but fact is, he dunno what he's doing half of the time. He might not understand the 'luck' stat, but he seems quite lucky to me XD

Amazing book

I can't wait to see where the story goes next. I just hope the series continues to conclusion. So many series finish nowadays right before the big baddies get their comuppance. I can't wait to see the dungeon when it hits its highest level.

Still good.

I went with 4 stars because I thought the author made some things more difficult than would make sense to me. I think this far into the series, the mc should come across as more capable. That's just my opinion/preference.

I have a bone to pick with you, Jez

What the heck, man? Why did you do Finger dirty like that? I'm not even annoyed by what happened to him, but more the aftermath of no acknowledgement whatsoever by anyone of what happened to him.

One of the best in the series and an easy 5 star. The last previous book had some issues but that has all been dealt with and the series has sucked me in again. Diving right into the next one. A big win for Jez!

Better and better

If you've been into this series, all I'll say is that it continues to get better and better.

If you haven't, you should go back to the first book and start there.
