This is a story about regret, redemption, and forgiveness as well as being brave enough to move forward and leave the pain of the past behind. Jenna and Nate were best friends, then high school sweethearts until he suddenly broke up with her.and broke her heart. He further devastated her by showing up at prom with another girl. In the eight years since, both have never forgotten what happened and neither have moved on with another.
Now, some eight years later, they are both back in their home town of Christmas Tree, PA. Nate is now delivering parcels and Jenna has just become a partner in her aunt’s shop. With her aunt laid up with a broken leg, it is up to Jenna to set up the window display for the town’s Candy Cane Competition. Winning the competition would be a boon to business, something the shop needs right now. Unfortunately, the candy canes she needs for the window display arrive smashed. But that isn’t the only shock Jenna has to deal with on her first day on the job. Nate is the one delivering the candy canes. Seeing each other is unexpected for both of them, but Nate is determined to take the opportunity to apologize to Jenna for his behaviour years ago and for hurting her. He desperately wants another chance with Jenna, the woman who still holds his heart, but will she ever be able to let down the guards around her heart and trust him not to hurt her again?
I liked Nate’s sincerity, his earnest efforts to make amends and persuade Jenna to give him, them, another chance. He doesn’t try to bully or rush her, but gives her time and space to think things through. He wants a romantic relationship, but even if that is a no go for Jenna, he hopes they can at least be friends. Nate does not downplay her hurt or trust issues, as he knows that his past actions caused them. I admire Jenna too. She accepted his apology, forgave him, but acknowledges her lingering pain and trust issues. After working with Nate on the window display, seeing the man he has become and listening to his regrets and reasons behind his actions, she wants to give them a second chance at a future together, but doesn’t give in until she is certain she can let go of the lingering pain and move forward. Their journey toward a future together, is a tad bumpy, emotional and includes self-reflection and having faith in each other and God’s guidance.
This book has my highest recommendation.
