Gabrielle Meyer grew up above a carriage house on a historic estate near the banks of the Mississippi River, imagining real and make-believe stories about the occupants who had lived there. She went on to work for the Minnesota Historical Society and loves writing fiction inspired by real people, places, and events. In a Nutshell: The latest and best (so far!) instalment of the Timeless series. Historical fiction incorporating timeslip, romance and Christian elements. Fabulous plotting, great characters, steady pacing, wonderful use of the two timelines. Much recommended! Works as a standalone but better if read in series order.

Plot Preview:

Twenty-year-old Caroline lives two lives simultaneously in two different time periods. (If you have read any of the earlier Timeless books, you know how this happens.)
In 1727, Caroline has escaped her dogmatic grandfather and an undesirable future and embarked upon a quest to search for her mother who had abandoned her as a baby. To make her journey easier, Caroline disguises herself as a cabin boy and boards a vessel sailing for Nassau. However, when pirates cross her way, her task becomes even more challenging.
In 1927, Caroline is the youngest daughter of a conservative preacher and is struggling to live up to the high standards expected of her position. Unfortunately, she holds many secrets about her two older brothers, which could potentially damage her father’s pristine reputation.
In both 1727 and 1927, all Caroline wants is the freedom to choose her own destiny. But is this possible when she doesn’t even know why she lives two lives?
The story comes to us in Caroline’s first-person perspective from both timelines.

I have been a huge fan of the Timeless series ever since I read the first book in May 2022. Every May since then has brought forth a new Timeless book. So imagine my surprise and delight when I heard that 2024 was to have two Timeless stories! I was not even a bit apprehensive that a new book so soon might mean a compromise on the story development or the research. That’s how much faith I have in author Gabrielle Meyer, plotter extraordinaire! She even manages to make this the best book so far: a fabulous accomplishment for a series where I have given 4.5 stars to two of the three earlier books.


Bookish Yays:
🕰️ As always, a Yay for the conceptual creativity and the historical research of every book in this series. It’s such a pleasure to read such well-crafted historical fiction.

🕰️ You would think that a book series with the same basic premise - a girl(s) living two lives and torn between two loves - would get repetitive, but the author manages to add new components to each book. This time for instance, Caroline doesn't know anything about timecrossing and that she will need to choose one of her two lives soon. Also, for the first time we don't immediately know who Caroline is. The first three books followed the three generations of Libby's family, but Caroline is unconnected to Libby. Who is she then and how is she able to timecross? (As if I will tell you – Hah!)

🕰️ With the plot containing elements of historical fiction, timeslip, romance, fantasy, and Christian fiction, the book holds appeal in a variety of ways and does justice to all the genres.

🕰️ Caroline is a fabulous protagonist. Her emotions are as strong as her loyalty and her courage. I love how her personality incorporates feelings and learnings from both her lives. Though her life is not of her own choosing in both timelines, her background as well as her struggles are distinct in each arc.

🕰️ The writing is also impeccable. I love how well Caroline’s first-person point of view is used in each timeline to bring us up to speed on the other timeline without making it feel like an infodump. There is no extended internal rambling and the narrative is perfectly streamlined.

🕰️ In the series books so far, I had at least some inkling of what would be covered within the timeline, be it the revolutionary war or the Pearl Harbor attacks or the witch hunts. This time, I had absolutely no clue about what to expect from both the 1727 and the 1927 timelines. This added a level of intrigue to an already fascinating book. (Even if you know what historical events the author might have incorporated in the two timelines, I am sure your enjoyment won’t reduce.)

🕰️ Each of the timelines has plenty going on, and there’s no repetition across them. While both of them have strong storylines, I loved the 1727 track more for its novelty. Seeing a pirate’s life from aboard a ship in a historical fantasy-romance is not a common occurrence.

🕰️ The tempo is fast and consistent throughout.

🕰️ The Christian elements in this novel are much stronger than the earlier books in the series. But I appreciate how these are tackled not just by spouting biblical verses at random points but by genuine introspection over the role of faith in our lives. I especially enjoyed how Caroline wondered why she couldn’t be a Christian at a personal level instead of having to impart her beliefs to the entire world. I was a bit worried when I saw that one of the characters was an Evangelical pastor. Though a practising Christian, I have no fondness for evangelicals. However, his character is also written well.

🕰️ The book is a historical romance, but the romance doesn’t dominate the plot in either timeline for most of the way. Moreover, Caroline’s mind is very clear about whom she prefers, so there is no time wasted over a “Which one do I chose?” quandary. Both the potential love interests are well-written.

🕰️ The ending. *Chef’s kiss!*

🕰️ The author’s note, which clearly indicates her writing choices with respect to the actual historical people and events. As brilliant as always!


Bookish Mixed Bags:
⏱️ While there are several interesting secondary characters in this novel, most of them are sketched only vaguely. Of course, in a story with two detailed plots, the chief narrative focus is only on Caroline and her love interests, so most of the other characters get only a limited chance to shine.


Bookish Nays:
⏰ Teensy complaint: Mayhap there were too many mentions of the word ‘mayhap’ in this book. After a point, it became distracting.


All in all, this was a highly satisfying read, with its excellent plot and research offering a thrilling experience to this historical fiction lover. This had been one of my most anticipated books of 2024, and I am ecstatic that it went so well.

Much recommended to all historical fiction lovers who are open to Christian content in their fictional reading choices. While this book works well as a standalone, I’d strongly recommend you read the entire series in the right order. All four books are awesome, so the gain is absolutely yours!

If you are wondering, as I truly am, how Gabrielle Meyer keeps putting out these absolute BANGERS in the Timeless Series...well, your guess is as good as mine.

Across the Ages was exactly what I was hoping it to be, and might be her most fleshed out and romantic story yet.

This story spans two timelines, where our main Caroline lives 2 uniquely different lives in each one. The first is in 1727: a time of pirates and familial mystery, where she tries to find her mother, while also navigating life as a deckhand aboard a notorious pirate ship. And then we have 1927: a life lived as a preachers daughter, where she has to juggle family corruption, and seek out a potential future in the spotlight. I always love learning more about each time period, and Meyer does her homework well.

I would be lying if I didn't say that the 1700's storyline didn't have my heart. First off, because pirates, and second there might have been a secondary character holding my heart there as well.

BUT...

Both timelines give Caroline the needed character growth to become ultimately who she needs to be. If you have read the other books in the series, the reader has the information Caroline does not, but it was so fun watching her unpack every mystery while falling in love along the way. The themes of faith are effortless woven into the story and fit the characters challenges and circumstances and made the book even better.

This book was so highly addictive, heartfelt, and the romance had me at hello. This is a book I thought about long after turning the last page and is a SOLID addition to an already incredible series. I can't wait for the next!

This is an entertaining, beautifully written, dual timeline historical fiction time travel novel. It has likable and engaging female protagonists, romance, faith, adventure, unexpected twists, and a gratifying conclusion. I especially enjoyed the pirate theme. This is the fourth entry in Ms. Meyer's outstanding Timeless series, and it can be read as a stand alone, but it is even more enjoyable when it is read in order. The author's historical note and her personal insight are informative and enlightening, and are truly appreciated. Ms. Rachel Botchan does a wonderful job voicing the characters. I am looking forward to reading the other entries in this series with great anticipation.

YOU GUYS. GABRIELLE DID IT AGAIN. It took me long enough to read book 4 that we have books 5 & 6 out but I GOT IT DONE! :)

This book is a NEW FAV in the series now for me.

This is a Christian Historical Romance Time Travel Series and to me, it is my favorite Christian Fiction series of all time.

In each book of the series, you have someone or multiple people who time travel. The person wakes up each day in a different time and before a specific birthday, they have to stay awake past midnight in that time and they will remain there forever, forsaking the other life and timeline forever.

This was the first of the series that our main character had no idea how the time travel piece worked.

We follow Caroline, in 1927 and 1727. She is searching for answers about why she has this ability to exist in both times. She stumbles upon a letter from her mother that hints at her own past....so she goes on the quest to figure out where her mother is. She disguises herself as a cabin boy and joins a ship sailing for the Bahamas, her mother's last known location. There she crosses path with Marcus Zale, a handsome pirate and finds herself caught in lots of secrets. In 1927, she has a lot of family drama as the daughter of a preacher and is trying to keep her family from scandal with all these secrets with her brother and whatnot. She has help from police officer, Lewis Cager, who was her childhood friend. Things go on from here as Lewis also helps in Caroline's quest...

I love how Gabrielle told this story! We were so intertwined in the timelines, you could really feel what was happening with each page. As someone who loves a good Scotsman in the 1700s....this book was for me! Marcus was the best guy. He was a protector and took care of Caroline no matter what. Their romance was CHEF'S KISS!

And Lewis was such a good friend to Caroline to help her. Without him, things would not have progressed as they did.

Caroline's family in 1927 - I wasn't too sure about them but by the end, my heart, I was crying. I loved so much of what her father said in the end of this book. The faith in that timeline was perfection to me. No matter what, we are not broken. We are in need of a savior. And this book reminds you of that and God's will and plan for your life.

My first 5 star in this series!!!

Right away, I really connected with the main character and got invested in both timelines because of that. She was smart and spunky.
Both timelines!!! So invested and I liked the characters in both. The plots were interesting in both. Yay!

Tropes & Triggers: dual timeline, mistaken identity, only kissing, mention of brothels

These books are unputdownable.
It feels so good to pick up a book you can really get lost in, with interesting characters, unusual plots, and great faith content. I especially applaud Gabrielle (and I told her this in person) for the way she wrote the celebrity pastor parents in the 1920s timeline. That could have gone a lot of ways and I loved how she chose to handle it, and the ending that was so imperfect and powerful.
Yeah, there's a fair amount of suspending disbelief. Arguments could be made against some of the choices the characters made. But as far as a great story, great Christian fiction, and a truly enjoyable ride goes, Across the Ages gets a solid five stars from me.

I have really enjoyed this series. Time ‘crossing’, history and good characters help to create a perfect story in my literary world. Though this story didn’t grab me as much as the others in the series, I still really like it. I appreciate Meyers historical explanations at the end of each book and the liberties to took. Highly recommend & looking forward to the next book, Every Hour until Then, which is set to be published in May.

Oh my goodness! This book was absolutely amazing! I loved the time periods it was set in, 1727 and 1927. Please note this is book 4 in the series and I highly recommend you read them in order otherwise there will be spoilers. Anyway, I loved Caroline’s character so much. I was fascinated by both of her lives. I liked that she was on a pirate ship in 1727 and a minister’s daughter that was sneaking into speakeasies in 1927. Both her lives were so interesting, there is usually one “life” I like much more than the other but in this book I loved both. However, I did know which one I wanted her to pick and she picked it, yay! Caroline is different from the previous books because she has no guide to tell her why she time travels or to explain that she has to choose one or anything. So I was very curious how it was going to go. I feel like this story had more Christian content than the previous books, I could be wrong on that, but I just loved the message of redemption and how much Christian content was included. Overall, I absolutely loved this book and I highly recommend it!

This was one of my most anticipated book releases of the year and I was not disappointed in the least! When I pick up a book in the Timeless series by Gabrielle Meyer, I automatically know I’m going to love it! They are the kind of books I continue to think about long after I’ve finished reading them. She combines original, captivating main characters with a unique plot, inspiring faith, compelling love stories, and interesting history so well.👏🏼

I was completely invested in Caroline’s story from the very beginning! I really liked her character from the start and found her story so interesting. I knew the moment she stepped foot on that pirate ship that this was going to be a hard book to put down. And the second the hero made his entrance into the book, I knew I was going to love his character. I don’t want to spoil anything but he was absolutely wonderful and I loved his character so much!
The romance was so beautiful and sweet! I loved this couple so much!❤️

The setting and history in this book was seriously so neat! I’ve never read a book quite like Across the Ages which I loved! It was unique and unpredictable.
The faith was so beautifully woven into this story and definitely a highlight of the book for me!

In conclusion, Across the Ages was another amazing book in the Timeless series! I seriously never want this series to end and I can’t wait for the next book! If you’re looking for a book you won’t be able to put down that includes the perfect amount of plot twists, action, history, romance, and faith, I highly recommend this one!

Where oh where do I start with this book?!?!?!

If you haven't been reading this series I cannot recommend them enough. Every single one has been completely amazing and such a work of art-in storylines, characters arcs, relationships, redemption and hope.

I have loved learning about each timeline of history that every character from this series has lived in. Each one is brought to life by the author and you feel completely immersed and invested in the lives of these characters.

This particular story has one set of parents who are preachers and in her other timeline she comes from thieves. It's such a unique plot line and I loved watching Caroline navigate between both. She is good to the core and I loved getting to know her.

It's always hard to review these books because I do not want to give even the slightest bit of information away.

Read this one for the experiences, historical settings, swoon worthy romance and seeing hope in every situation.

This is a top favorite from 2024! All of the stars, two thumbs up, the highest of recommendations!

How do I even find words for a book series that takes my breath away? This was book four in the Timeless series from Gabrielle Meyer and I devoured it within 24 hours. Stunning works of fiction, but you’ll also learn an incredible amount of actual history. Gabrielle is one of the most gifted writers I’ve stumbled upon, and I am so grateful that she so boldly shares these faith filled stories with the world.

Each book thus far has had its own unique set of challenges for the FMC as a time crosser. In this story we follow Caroline who lives in both 1727 and 1927. Unlike in the first three books, Caroline doesn’t understand much about her time crossing gift. She finds a letter hidden by her mother that leads her on a dangerous journey to seek out answers. Caroline knows that to board a ship to travel in 1727, she must disguise herself as a cabin boy. The word “adventure” doesn’t even accurately encompass all that evolves from this choice. I have to say, the pirate timeline in 1727 was one of my very favorites. You forget you’re even reading a book – the writing is so exciting that you’re vividly experiencing the story as if you’re watching a movie in your brain. A page-turner for sure!

In 1927, Caroline is the daughter of a world-famous pastor in St. Paul, MN. Challenges lurk around every corner because Caroline’s brothers have fallen into the life of gangsters and chaos of the Prohibition era. Caroline is pressed to hold her family secrets close to her heart or else she risks destroying her father’s career.

This story will have you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. Twists and turns will leave you speechless and of course, there’s romance that will melt your heart. I have to say the hints at what’s to come in book five have me beyond excited! Start this series from book one if you haven’t already. You won’t regret it. 😉

It was a wonderfully engaging and satisfying read! The writing was beautiful, and there were many amazing plot twists. I enjoy unpredictable books that keep me guessing and turning the pages, and this one certainly did that.

Historical Fiction/ Time Travel

You would think after 4 books the concept of Time Crossers would lose its appeal, that is not the case with this series!! This was another beautiful story and they just seem to keep getting better!! The author chose to go in a different direction with this one, especially when it came to the quest for faith. It definitely brought a fresh feel to the series. I liked these characters and the tale that was woven! I have never really liked time travel stories, but I absolutely adore these. The faith and history elements make them so thought provoking, and I always learn something historical while reading and falling in love with the characters. 100% recommend.

I'm so happy I stumbled upon this series. The Timeless series has become one of my favorites. Each book is so unique, with plots and characters I've grown to love. When I heard this book involves pirates and the main character disguises herself as a boy to join the crew on a ship in a quest to find her mother, I knew it would be amazing. I adored it!! It has adventure,family bonds, and a beautiful romance. I also really appreciated the messages of hope and faith woven throughout the book. It was so very good, and I will forever recommend this author.

OH MY GOODNESS!!!! The amount of times my jaw drops and I exclaim aloud, "WHAT?!, WHAT?!, WHAT THE HECK?!" can only begin to explain the enjoyment and enthusiasm I have for this absolute masterpiece of a book and series.
As always, the historical content is ELITE and the characters are extraordinary, including the character crossovers cleverly tied in so we could see what's up with the characters from the last book.
Also, the themes of redemption, mattering to God, and the courage to own up to our choices no matter the consequences blew me away and lit my soul on fire.
Honestly, Lewis got on my nerves a bit, BUT Marcus is TO. DIE. FOR. 😍😍 Hello dreamy pirate dude.
Both timelines, including my fav historical time period of the 20's, were so well intermixed and crafted. Another golden example of this author's brilliant mind and God-given talent, the only complaint I have is that book 5 isn't already here.
I highly recommend ordering these books from Baker Book House especially in future for pre-orders as you get a great price and cool swag!

Across the Ages is the 4th book in the Timeless series. I have to say it is my least favorite of the series, but still an excellent book. We follow pirates and the prohibition era. Usually in these books there is a huge plot twist and this book did not have that twist that is why I gave it 4 stars. But still a great book that I quite enjoyed. I really loved the pirate timeline. It was not a subject that I read a lot about. Still a great addition to this wonderful series that I think all should read!!!

This is just such a perfect book. Beginning to end… it gave me all the bookish feelings!!!

I’ve read all the books in this series and talking to so many people it seems they all affected everyone in a different way.

Book1: a little slow for me, but what an ending
Book2: such fun timelines!!!
Book3: the faith 😭 absolutely riveting
Book4: perfection… favorite leading man of all time

Across the Ages is the fourth book in the Timeless series. While there are some references to previous characters in the series and there may be a few spoilers to such, this could probably be enjoyed as a standalone as well. That said, it's a wonderful series and absolutely worth reading in its entirety.

With each additional book in this series, I am absolutely astounded... not only by Gabrielle Meyer's fantastic storytelling abilities, but also how each book---while all dealing with time-crossers who will ultimately have to choose one time--- feels like a completely unique and exciting story. In this story, Caroline is living in 1727 and 1927. One of the things that sets her story apart is that she does not have someone in her life to help navigate being a time-crosser and what that truly means. At the start of the story, she believes that she is the only of her kind... but when she finds a letter from her mother in 1727, she finds herself posing as a cabin boy on a pirate ship to seek answers. Pirates and prohibition!? What's not to love about these two drastically different lives she is leading? I really loved the romance in this story... but I have to say my favorite aspect was truly the message of God's grace and redemption that it offers. This is a theme that we see carried out so beautifully across both timelines. Caroline's parents in 1927 were such a wonderful example of practicing what you preach, and I just found myself loving everything about this book so much. While I have enjoyed absolutely every single book in this series, this is definitely a new favorite for me and one that absolutely cannot be missed.

That ending! Or let me just say, every ending to every book in this series always gets me. I knew I would enjoy this next installment in The Timeless series. You want to know why? 1920s and pirates...need I say more? Two of my absolute favorite things to read about, and this was no exception. Thank you so much Gabrielle Meyer for combining my two favorite historical eras into one fantastic book!

The characters were amazing! Especially the pirate, have I mentioned there are pirates? I always fall in love with the pirate of a story. I loved the settings of both timelines and loved the mystery aspect of our main character trying to discover her past. If you haven't picked up this series, well it's not my fault.

And the book hangover begins now… SO good! I can’t get enough of this series. Gabrielle Meyer ALWAYS manages to surprise me, along with ALL the other emotions… just read it and tell me I’m not wrong.

Another lovely addititon to this must-read series! And dare I say? My favorite Timeless hero yet! It would be a fair point to say that a hero that calls her “lass” goes an absurdly long way with me (sorry, Henry). But we’re talking a protective, redemption-seeking Scottish pirate, okay? I expected a teensy bit more menace from a morally grey hero and peril and swashbuckling throughout, but in the end Marcus Zale was swoony in the high seas.

I loved that with this time-crosser story our heroine has no context, no mentor, nothing to help her understand why she lives a day in one time period and then wakes up in another. Caroline’s search for answers was compelling, even if in general she lacked the capable, grounded grit of other Timeless heroines I can’t help compare her to, and I wasn’t completely convinced why two men were so over the moon for the naive songbird.

Through my highly invested journey with this series, I usually prefer one time period/scenario more than the other, and here there was no contest (just like the pseudo-love-triangle). By the end I was bracing for a major twist that never slapped me in the face, but hey, our girl got her answers and the best pir— I mean, man won.

On to the next!

This has got to be one of the MOST beautiful books I have ever laid eyes on!! I knew I NEEDED this book as soon as I first saw it 😄 I mean 1720s pirate vibes AND 1920s flapper vibes!! Literally two of my absolute favorite eras to read about 😁

Gabrielle Meyer always does a phenomenal job at writing amazing Christ-filled stories! One of my favorite things about her stories is how she doesn’t shy away from honoring God through her writing ♥️

This book was a touch different than the previous books in this series as the main character didn’t understand her time swapping abilities whereas the others would have been taught about them by their parents. It gave this story a fun twist!

I honestly wasn’t sure which of Caroline’s lives I was hoping she would choose because there were positive points for each life. Marcus Zale/Maxwell MacDougal was definitely the highlight of 1727 because, hello, he was a pirate!! And a Scottish pirate at that 😁

I did like Lewis in 1927, though, too. He may have been a childhood tease to Carrie, but he was extremely kind and endearing now. I loved that he was so willing to help her search for her mother!

The conclusion to this book was immensely satisfying! Gabrielle Meyer always does such a great job with her endings ☺️

Another well spun time crossing novel. Caroline lives as a boy on a pirate ship in 1727 and as the daughter of a well known preacher in 1927. Lots of interesting historical details in the pages.

Well my goodness, talk about a roller coaster ride! It took me a while to get into this book, but once I did, I was ALL IN.

Can you imagine being a time crosser without any knowledge of what it means, what it is, or what the rules are? Caroline had no guidance with it, and in fact, thought she was the only one with this "curse".

And oh, the emotions that roiled through me starting at about halfway through this book. The pressures of perfectionism and all those secrets, the family dynamics, the diving bell! Whew!

This is one of those books where you just don't know how it'll end. With one chapter, you think one thing, the next chapter, something else, and back and forth throughout. I truly didn't know until the end of the book.

I cried, I got goosebumps, my heart beat faster, I was half afraid to turn the page because I just didn't know what would happen. I didn't know for sure what I wanted to happen. There were both sweet and painful moments in each era.

Yeah. I was all in.

This is my favorite in the series! I listened to it and the narration was fantastic! The author just keeps getting better and better. I can't recommend it enough!!
