Syl is a wonderful story that follows the misadventures of a slime discovering their new life in a wonderful new world full of magic and monsters and the ever present System that governs the progression and evolution of all the realm's inhabitants.
I remember reading Syl on Royal Road and decided to pick it up again now that it's been published and it was as much of joy the second time around as it was the first. It's origin as a web novel does affect the pacing of the book but I enjoyed the slow burn start as Syl spends time learning about themselves and the system through experimentation. The monster evolution potential of a slime is boundless and Syl's approach to levelling is both pragmatic and curious.
Down the line her self discovery and early learnings saga winds down as she meets other sentient creatures and even humans, who I quite enjoyed as side characters, which added a lot to the world building.
The story takes a break from monster evolution and explores how humans progress in this fantasy setting and the society they have established for themselves, but at the core of the story, Syl only cares about their own progression, and while they build good relationships, it's not their main motivation as it would be for other isekai main characters.
The book focuses a lot on skills and traits and the general system which can be very verbose, especially on the audiobook, but if you're here to see the numbers go up, then you won't be disappointed. All in all, the stakes aren't world threatening and the main character is not driven by deep emotions or purpose, making this a very cozy litRPG that explores a world with an inherent system and how the characters relate to such a world, and in my opinion, it's done very well, which is no easy task.
So if you're looking for something light hearted, witty and fun, or if you enjoyed Chrysalis or That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime, I think you'll find this book very enjoyable, with a lot more to come regarding the world and system building, in the later releases.
