The Martin Brothers are back for Christmas! First, Porsche and Drummond are moving in together, but Porsche's losing her mind a little in their giant new house with the responsibility of planning the Christmas Eve Brunch for the family.
Amaya and Draymond are having a Christmas Day wedding, but there's a pre-nup to be signed that someone's refusing.
And the OGs Charisse and Dru are expecting their twin girls any day now, but Dru still hasn't learned about working too much, and it could cost him. Enjoy these three novellas in one as a Christmas treat.
I am a big Nina High fan, so when I saw that Love, At Christmas was coming out with updates on the Martin Brothers, I was sooo excited. I really loved each of these characters in their individual books, which came out in the past year or so. I quickly read the series, finding each book even better than the last. Unfortunately, I don't think Love, At Christmas gave me that excitement. I understand there are 3 novellas, but I would've preferred if they were combined into one story, so that the timeline was much more cohesive. Dru and Charisse's story was the best, but the portrayal of Porsche made her generally unlikable and Amaya came off as kind of boring, which she was not in her story with Draymond. Also, I don't understand why Lily's love life continues to be an underlying story when we haven't gotten a book about her. As a matter of fact, Nina High has seemingly moved onto a completely different storyline with The Teachers of Hardwood High (which is so damn good). All in all, Love, At Christmas is a decent follow up but it didn't do much for opinion of the characters I had previously really enjoyed.
I want more! I just know Porsche is going to have a surprise pregnancy somewhere down the road. This cannot be the end of the Martins! What about Draya? What about Lily? See w need more. Great family, great love stories!
I will read any book Nina high writes. I’ve read all of her books but I truly enjoy these Martin brothers. I like how each couple had their own part in the book while all still being connected. I need Porsche to get it together and just accept all of Drummonds love he has for her.
Summary: The Martin Brothers are back for Christmas! Taken from Amazon.
Tropes: self-discovery, identity, repressed trauma, relationship and individual insecurities, motherhood, life cycle changes, lasting family and friendships.
Themes: Elitism, money, family legacy, learning to trust, having faith, strengthening relationships bonds, mental health advocacy.
Character: I really loved Dru in this book. Although, I loved all of the Martin brothers, Dru took it home from me. This guy really had me crying when he surprised Charisse with handmade furniture he created. He is the most calculated of all the brothers, but he found himself miscalculated in his marriage and when he figured out family should and needed to be first, Charisse was already hurt as his absence. I love when a man, a black man, comes into self-awareness and can be emotional and mentally present in a marriage, a relationship. I continued thinking, "where are these men in real life?"
Thoughts: This was another great novel from Nina High. She really knows how to put her words into a style that just draws you in. One of my favorite themes that she highlighted in the book was positive mental health. We all know that Porsche has serious trauma when it comes to being committed in a relationship, but Drummond loved her through it all and advocated for not only her to seek therapeutic alliance but both of them as well. Nina shows her readers that black men and women can engage in healthy relationships and seeking therapeutic assistance should not be a taboo. In addition, I love how she demonstrates the Martin brothers' sense of family cohesion. They were not perfect but exhibited through their actions and commit to one another, they were family. I absolutely love this book, and it is definitely a must read.
It was cool to catch up with the Martin brothers and their brides, or soon-to-be brides. I always appreciate humor and there were several funny moments throughout.
Unfortunately the first two stories fell a tad flat for me; Porsche was highly annoying and unlikable (and I didn't find her comments about Charisse funny at all) , and the prenup thing between Amaya and Draymond felt a little like forced conflict to me. I enjoyed Dru and Charisse's story the most, and I loved the gesture Dru made and the names they picked out. I didn't always love how the women talked to their men, and how the men just always took it. I'll admit that's become a pet peeve of mine in books nowadays and it's totally subjective. There were certainly plenty of loving moments, too.
I'm wondering if a story about Lily is coming, given that so much attention was paid to her relationship and the explanation was left up in the air.
The Martins brothers and their significant others are busy this round for the holidays. Holiday brunch, a Christmas wedding, and arrival of the twins have Drummond, Draymond, and Dru stretched thin.
Drummond & Porsha have finally moved in. The move has Porsha unsettled in ways she cannot articulate which is wreaking havoc on hosting this year’s family brunch.
Draymond is preparing to marry the love of his life Amaya, it’s just one thing that’s causing friction…..the pre-nup she’s adamant on him signing.
Dru is all work and no balance but with the babies due soon Clarisse is beginning to feel the absence of his presence.
Although Porsche was getting on my nerves like pregnancy isn’t a normal thing i hope she get pregnant next lol. Charisse and Dru was so heart felt. I could literally feel the emotions when Dru didn’t make it and the labor scene. Amaya and Draymonds wedding sounded like a dream 😍. This was a perfect finish to the series although I’d like to read about Lily and Javonte.
This was a really good 👍🏾 read. It sums up the first book 📕 with the two couples, the second book 📕 with the two couples getting married and the third book, well they moved in with one another ❣️ I didn’t care for Porsche and her man situation, but thank Gawd she has good friends to talk her out her crazy thoughts 💭 All in all this book 📕 series is really good 😊
The stories of the Martin brothers and finding their mates was so entertaining. It made the point of how different family members can be, even twins. This story wrapped up the intertwining of their relationships. The way the author divided their situations was both thoughtful and entertaining.
I read this one because of its Christmas themes. I met the Martin brothers in Nina High's Teachers of Hardwood High series so even though I haven't read the other Martin brother stories yet I wasn't lost.
Love, At Christmas was heavy on family and decorations and love, all the elements that are important to me at Christmas. I liked the three-in-one novellas with Drummond and Porsche, Draymond and Amaya an Dru and Charisse so we got a brunch, a wedding and babies.
It was really sweet and well written. I enjoyed this one. Now, I must read the other stories.
This was such a great way to give us more of the Martin couples. Seeing how their relationships are thriving and families expanding. Leave it to Porsche to have us cracking up!
What is there not to love about those Martin Brothers. Twins were bound to happen to one of the brothers. Porsche is a total basket case. Please give us more of this family. Great stories about love.
If you are a fan of the Martin Brothers and their lovely ladies, this is the perfect holiday read. You get to catch up with your favorite couples and see what they have been up to.. in this holiday novella.
Friend wdym you want to protect his money. Listen I understand the desire to sign a prenuptial but...oh I'm sure you'll find something to do in your now rich life 😅
I wished the stories took place in order of events. And just coming off of a high from Drummond and Porche’s story, her character threw me off in this ending to their story.
A perfect way to wrap the series. I’m definitely sad to see them go. Hopefully they pop up in other books from time to time, I’m gonna miss these brothers!!
