High Country Ranch #5

Wishing for the Rancher's Love

Rate this book
In the high country of Colorado, danger sometimes causes enemies to work together . . . and fall in love.

As the only one of her siblings who hasn’t married, Clementine Oakley feels left behind. But she does her best to focus on her candy-making business, hoping to someday have a shop of her own instead of a lone counter in Worth’s General Store. Giving and outgoing, she makes friends with everyone in town—except for one person, the store owner’s son . . . Grady Worth.

Grady isn’t quite sure why he can’t get along with Clementine, but every time they’re together, all they do is bicker. When his widowed dad proposes a contest to encourage Grady to find love, Clementine is the last person Grady considers as an option.

As a stalker begins to make dangerous threats to Clementine and Grady, the two are left with little choice but to pretend to be engaged and travel together to lure the stalker into revealing himself. Stuck together, they soon find that switching from enemies to lovers might not be so bad after all . . . until the danger finally catches up to them.

The wonderful High Country Ranch series, featuring the Colorado Oakley siblings—Maverick, Clarabelle, Ryder, Tanner, and Clementine—comes to a close with this enjoyable, touching addition. The story piqued my interest from the beginning and held my attention for the entire story. Vivacious candy maker Clementine and determined livery operator Grady have a complicated relationship—from childhood friends, to adversaries, to lovers. I enjoyed the well-crafted twist on the enemies-to-lovers trope. Their bickering/flirting is entertaining. Although romance is the primary focus of the narrative, dangerous adventure and intrigue add a level of excitement. I totally enjoyed this book and the series and highly recommend both. I can’t wait for Ms. Hedlund’s next western series featuring the Noble family introduced in Maverick’s story.

Grady & Clementine

You can’t got wrong with a good enemies to lovers… especially when they’re clearly in love and in denial. Now, throw in a stalker!

If you like a book with banter, this one will not disappoint! I loved the arguing that Grady and Clementine did, it just really brought out their characters. I liked the soul searching that they both did to realize why they’d become “enemies” and also realized that they were in love with each other.

I was also totally surprised at who the stalker was! I wasn’t sure who to think it was, but I was totally surprised!

Thank you for the early copy, Jody, it’s always a pleasure!!

Thank you to the author for the ARC of Wishing for the Rancher’s Love by Jody Hedlund. All opinions are my own.

It’s no secret that Jody Hedlund is one of my favorite authors. Everything she writes is just so good! This book is no exception.

Wishing for the Rancher’s Love is book 5 in the High Country Ranch series. It takes place in Colorado and follows two people that can’t stand each other but secretly have feelings for each other. While this book can be read as a standalone, I would recommend reading the first four books in this series first to avoid spoilers, and they’re amazing as well!

Grady and Clementine have known each other for years, but somewhere along the way they turned from best friends into enemies. Every time they interact, they do nothing but bicker. Then one day, Clementine starts receiving mysterious notes and flowers from someone anonymously. When the notes become creepier and threatening, Grady decides he will do whatever is in his power to protect Clementine.

I loved this book so much and didn’t want to put it down. The tension and passion between Clementine and Grady was so good! There were so many good kissing scenes, so you won’t be disappointed.

Grady was so protective of Clementine, and I loved how he went to great lengths to keep her safe. I also enjoyed how he became vulnerable with her as they spent more time together. Clementine was so stubborn and headstrong, but I liked that she didn’t let Grady push her around.

I also really liked the danger aspect of this story because it made me want to keep turning the pages to find out what would happen next.

Overall, I would recommend this book! I’m sad this series is over, but I’m excited for Jody’s next western series.

What a great ending to this series!

Enemies to lovers is one of my favorite tropes, especially when they’re obviously in love with each other but don’t see it yet. Add a stalker in to the story, and it made things even more interesting!

I loved Clementine and Grady. The banter between them was lots of fun, and the balance of angst and mutual attraction was done just right. Their romance was lovely, keeping it clean but with a lot of sizzle.

This series was very entertaining, and I’ve loved each story in it.

Thank you for the early copy, Jody!

Jody Hedlund’s High Country Ranch series is now complete! Wishing for the Rancher’s Love is suspenseful and so swoony, and wraps up the Oakley family stories well. Clementine and Grady have tons of chemistry and I always love the enemies-to-more trope, but they weren’t my favorite couple of the series. Still, I will always recommend one of Jody’s books—I can’t get enough and am sad to see this series come to an end.

But never fear: Jody is taking us back to the high country with a new Western series, coming soon!! 4/5 stars

I’m not usually big on “enemies to lovers,” but Jody Hedlund did an excellent job with this one! Throughout the series I wondered just what it was that made Clementine and Grady so antagonistic with each other, and that answer is a lot more complicated than you’d think! I liked that the answer went far beyond just the fact that they were attracted to one another.

I just LOVED the mystery and suspense around Clementine’s stalker. Oohh it kept me turning the pages for sure. This is something that’s rare in a Jody Hedlund book and I’m here for it if she wants to add more suspense plots in the future. I did have some correct suspicions, but I certainly didn’t expect the climax to happen as it did.

There’s some pretty great kisses in this one, tingles and desire, but not as heavy as the previous book. Clementine and Grady’s chemistry is off the charts and as the story goes along their romance felt like a natural progression, especially considering how long they pushed each other away. I also really liked their conversations- straightforward and honest, teasing yet heartfelt, and achingly vulnerable. The best part of the whole book for me is how they learned to share their hearts with one another in such an open way.

I received a complementary copy of this book from the author. I was not asked to leave a positive review. My opinions are my own.

The saga of the High Country Ranch continues. Although the ranch only plays a small role in this story, the heroine is part of the family that owns the ranch. Clementine has moved to town where she can prepare and sell her candy at the general store. The owner practically considers her a daughter, but she does everything in her power to avoid the owner’s son. Frankly, the son seems to be a pretty decent sort of fellow, at least compared to the other guys in town. He and Clementine were close friends as youngsters when she used to hang out with his mother who taught her how to make candy. Since the mother died, both wonder what happened to their friendship because all they do now is bicker and squabble. Both are ready to start another battle at the drop of a hat. Then the father proposes a challenge to his son, who takes it up even though his heart is not in it. Meanwhile, Clementine has acquired a secret admirer who seems to know a lot about her. I enjoyed the suspense of trying to figure out the secret admirer, wondering what Grady will do next to try to protect Clementine from him while vowing he has no interest in her. The action seems to start ramping up considerably about halfway through the book. What fun! I received an advance copy of this book from the author. This is my honest review. All opinions are strictly my own.

This is such a fun friends-to-enemies-to-friends-to-lovers story! Finally getting Clementine’s story was worth the wait, and her and Grady are wonderful! Jody Hedlund is amazing at creating a memorable and enjoyable romance story. Explosive is the best word I would use these two and their story.
Both Grady and Clementine have strong personalities and definitely know how to push each other’s buttons. With their history and awareness of how the other works, they each do a great job at stirring the pot and creating trouble.
Don’t even get me started on the chemistry and tension between these two. Again, explosive! Even when they “can’t stand each other” they cannot deny how attracted and drawn they are to each other. It’s such a beautiful balance between “hate” and love, and seeing them come to the realization that they have strong feelings was so enjoyable.
There was also some great moments of light suspense and mystery. Working together and trying to solve the puzzle really helped push Grady and Clementine towards their true feelings. I adored how they couldn’t even deny the comfort, peace, and safety they felt with each other despite wanting to feel the opposite.
So pretty much this story, and the romance in it, was one of the best I’ve read in a long time, and it was a great conclusion a much-loved series.
I absolutely loved this series and being able to learn more about the Colorado high country and how people lived their lives during this time period. Also I am SO exited for the announcement Jody made in the author’s note of this book!!!

Enemies to lovers at its finest

Wowzers the banter in this book was top notch! I loved Grady and his grumpy attitude but also his tenderness and healing. The way he learned about how his past was emotionally effecting him was beautiful. Clementine was a spitfire and I loved it.

Loved how the main conflict was resolved also. Very well done.

Last book in the series, last but not least. I loved this story so much, enemies to lovers is one of my favorite tropes.
Jody Hedlund is a great writer, she created 2 beautiful characters: Clementine and Grady, loved their personalities and how they complemented each other.
The stalker situation added a little mystery that had me guessing who this guy was. It made the story more exciting and compelling.
You have to read it!

3/5

Almost didn't become a 3/5, I liked all the tropes, it was just the way the story was executed, it was still good, but definitely not my favorite out of the series.

Tropes: Enemies-to-lovers, Friends-to-lovers, he-falls-first, small town romance, forced proximity

Oh Clementine!!! I have been patiently waiting for your story to arrive. Watching you in the background of all of your siblings' stories and meeting their special someones had me wondering when your turn would come. And how you would finally help Grady to move past the banter and pent up energy to more than just enemies. Oh how I absolutely loved you two and your story!!! I was laughing and grinning and swooning and sighing over you two. Your banter was so much fun. And even better was when you both had to work together for your protection. Oh that forced proximity and working together definitely helped with so much towards you two realizing that there's so much more there than the enemy type banter and frustrations that you have had in the past.

And that town dance you went to. Oh yeah! Definitely an eye opening moment for your both. Don't give up on Grady, he'll come around. And my, oh my, is it adorable and perfection!!!

Can you tell I enjoyed this book? I loved it all. The banter, the mild suspense and mystery. The enemies to more. The tender moments. The helping each other. The taking the time to talk and learn and understand. The internal reflections of what each other felt and why. It all came together so wonderfully.

I am sad that this is the last book in the High Country Ranch series but I know there is more coming from this author. And I love that I can go back and reread these books because they are definitely worth doing so!!!

Clementine and Grady thanks for the lovely time I spent while reading your story!!! And many thanks to the wonderful author who gave us this family and town.

Content: Clean. Some mild moments of peril. Some kisses but nothing further and couple very mild innuendos.

I received a copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

The Oakley siblings stories come to a swoony conclusion in the final instalment of the
High Country Ranch series. Every book in this series has been incredible and Clementine's story is no exception!

Clementine Oakley never imagined she would be the last of her siblings to find love. After all, she's always been the outgoing, flirty one and never lacked for attention. Now that all her siblings are married, she's decided to go all in on her candy-making business while she waits for love to come her way. But what if it came from the one man she secretly loves but barely tolerates? Grady Worth has always had a soft spot for his childhood friend, but things went terribly wrong somewhere along the way and arguing seems to be their only form of communication these days. When his father proposes a challenge in exchange for a loan to purchase the building he's been wanting, Grady knows exactly who his dad will pick as Grady's bride if the widower wins the contest: Clementine. The race is on to find someone, anyone else. Because there's no way she'd ever even entertain the thought of marrying him...is there? But then Clementine starts getting creepy notes and the two decide to band together in an attempt to ward off the stalker before it's too late.

What you can expect:
⭐️Enemies to lovers
⭐️Fake engagement
⭐️Forced proximity
⭐️Childhood friends

I don't always love the enemies-to-lovers trope, but this was a fun one! I loved the banter between Clementine and Grady. Their chemistry was clear from the very first chapter, despite the way they bickered. Grady's insults (to others, not Clementine) cracked me up every time. Both Grady and Clementine did a lot of soul-searching and experienced so much character growth throughout the novel. As always, the romance was top-notch while keeping all doors closed, and the stalker added some extra suspense to the plot line. I thoroughly enjoyed every page. Jody Hedlund's books are always my comfort reads and I can't wait to see what else she has up her sleeve!

This series has been a lot of fun and I am so sad to see it come to an end. Wishing for the Rancher’s Love is the fifth and final book in Jody Hedlund’s High Country Ranch series.
Clementine and Grady definitely had the enemies to lovers tension and it was fun to finally get to read their book. They both had some growing up to do throughout the book as they interacted with each other. I liked getting to know them.
They were both learning to work through their feelings for the future and the things that had happened in the past. Clementine had to figure out what she wanted in life and how to let Grady back into her life. Grady had to learn to let go of his anger and learn to love Clemtine.
The romance definitely fits the characters. They were kind of explosive but they balanced each other out. They were a perfect fit. I liked reading about them connecting and seeing them falling in love. It was a fun end to a lovely series.
I would totally recommend Wishing for the Rancher’s Love. Wishing for the Rancher’s Love is a closed door historical romance.

This is the fifth book in the High Country Ranch series and author Jody Hedlund states that her Oakley family saga is now complete. Perhaps knowing that this was the last book was the reason that I wanted to read slowly and make it last. Believe me, that just wasn't possible! Wishing for the Rancher's Love has danger, adventure, and intrigue surrounding a stalker, but the real attraction is the powerful connection between Clementine Oakley and Grady Worth. Who knew that bantering could be so much fun and romance between enemies would be so sizzling?

There are several familiar tropes in this story, including 'friendship gone bad' and 'fake relationship' but the 'enemies to lovers' trope provides romance at its best! Clementine and Grady's kissing scenes are swoon-worthy, to say the least, but the depth of their emotional connection took my breath away. If you enjoy Western settings, electrifying romance, and family reunions, grab a copy of Wishing for the Rancher's Love. It's a fantastic conclusion to the High Country Ranch series!

Wishing for the Rancher's Love by Jody Hedlund is the fifth book in the High Country Ranch series and a definite must read if you love sweet inspirational historical romance stories.
Clementine Oakley is the only one of her siblings who hasn't found love and marriage but knows that she wants to marry for love so waiting for the right person to come along is the only thing she can do. She keeps busy focusing on her candy making business that she runs out of Worth's General Store which keeps her in very close contact with Grady Worth who she has known for years and in the last few years or so they seem to bicker constantly.
When Grady's father proposes a contest to encourage Grady to find love little do they both realize that they are going to finally have to be honest about their feelings for each other.
I really enjoyed this story along with the whole series and look forward to reading more books by this author in the future.

I was given an ARC by the author/publisher. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.

Clementine Oakley makes candy and sells it at the general store, hoping to have her own shop someday. Over the past year, Clementine has watched all of her siblings get married. She feels left behind and unlikable.

Grady Worth owns the town livery and wants to open a hardware store. Grady used to be friends with Clementine, but as they reached adulthood, he pushed her away. Now, the two bicker whenever they are near each other.

When Clementine begins to receive creepy notes, and then Grady is threatened, they pretend to be engaged, trying to lure the stalker out. Spending time together has them rethinking whether they want to continue being enemies.

Wishing For The Rancher's Love is the fifth and final book in the High Country Ranch series by Jody Hedlund. I liked Grady and Clementine's story. They were a fun couple. I do wish the whole family had been together at the end.

I purchased a paperback copy of this book.

This is the fifth and last book in Hedlund’s High Country Ranch series. If you have read the first four books, you will have met several of the characters in this book, but it’s not absolutely necessary to have read them all before this one.

I enjoyed this enemies to lovers story, and appreciate Hedlund’s treatment of how each of the two main characters faces past hurts and realizes how those have affected their current attitudes and their relationship. There are several plot twists that shake up the story. I didn’t have any trouble reading the whole thing in one day – wanting to find out what happens and how Clementine and Grady finally admit they love each other.

This this the 5th and final book in the High Country Ranch series but can be read as a standalone book.

This is Clementine Oakley and Grady Worth’s story.

Clementine is a candy maker and Grady is a livery operator. They were close friends when younger but turn to enemies and turn to lovers by the end of the book.

When Clementine starts receiving notes and flowers mysteriously and when they start to get more threatening Grady does everything in his power to protect Clementine.

While trying to figure out who the stalker was they were able to talk and understand what happened in the past and finally forgive each other.

I loved this whole series and looking forward to reading the next one. Keep up the wonderful work Jody.

Grady stomped around and growled at Clementine but couldn't for the life of himself figure out why the silly girl wouldn't listen and change her behavior.

Clementine, who could give back to Grady as good as she got, just went on with life. It may not have been exactly like she wanted it to be, but it didn't stop her from being loving and kind to everyone but Grady. His attitude and words hurt her so.

Then, Clementine was threatened and frightened. Even Grady took notice and assumed the role of her protector.

During the process of trying to expose and eliminate her threat both of them slowly but surely realized their feelings for each other. Of course, both were reluctant to share those feelings which made the twists and turns at the end of the story very interesting.

Jody tied up the end with a big bow and I thoroughly enjoyed the story of Grady and Clementine!

What a great ending to this series! I loved seeing Clementine up close and delving into why her and Grady were always so harsh with each other. We get to see her in a new light since she’s on her own now, living over the general store instead of at her family’s ranch.

The elements Jody wove into their story were perfect. They didn’t even realize exactly WHY they weren’t the best of friends like they used to be. I loved watching that unfold as they each figured out what drove them down that road.

It gets kinda creepy when someone starts leaving her notes and fake flowers. Read as fast as I could to solve the mystery of who it was and why he was doing it.

I’ve enjoyed this entire series and the other series that came before this one. I’m looking forward to the next series that is connect to these! She mentions it at the end is this book!

The last book in the High Country Ranch series and I have so much love for this book. Some authors are great at writing stories. Some are great at writing settings and dialogue. Some write great characters that invite you into their story. And them some capture you emotions that pull you in from the start. If you enjoy feeling the chemistry between your characters while remaining sweet, you should try out Clementine and Grady's story! They both have so much animosity towards each other and hurts to overcome and seeing them have to work through it all together was sweet and insightful. These two draw out quite a few laughs as well with all their bickering, but under it all, the love abounds.

I finally finished this beautiful novel! Wishing for the Rancher's Love is the fifth and last installment of the High Country Ranch series by Jody Hedlund. Set once again during the 1870s in the rugged mountains of Colorado, this story details the romance story of the last Oakley sibling, Clementine. I enjoyed reading Clementine and Grady's sweet story, as this book showcased the troupes of childhood friends and an enemies-to-lovers affair. Jody Hedlund's High Country Ranch series has been one of my favorites, as the last book in this series did not disappoint! This series is wonderful for Christian western romance lovers wanting sweet stories of true love! Suitable for young adult readers and older.

Jody Hedlund is one of my go-to authors. The entire High Country Ranch series was a treat to read. Wishing for the Rancher’s Love is the story of the last of the Oakley siblings, the sweet, candy-making Clementine. I so enjoyed this story of longtime friends turned enemies turned lovers. Grady is a swoony hero, the perfect mate for Clementine. They sure took their time figuring that out! Their banter and arguing is such a fun part of the story! Everyone knows they belong together except Grady and Clementine. The addition of a mystery stalker kept me turning pages trying to find out just who it was.
I could not put this one down until I came to the very last page.
Well Done, Jody Hedlund!

Wishing for the Rancher’s Love is the fifth and final book in Jody Hedlund’s High Country Ranch series. If you enjoyed her Colorado Cowboys and Colorado Cowgirls series, don’t miss this Western historical fiction romance series set in the Colorado Territory during the late 1800s.
Clementine is the last of the Oakley siblings who has not married. Grady’s dad issues him a challenge that would give him the money he needs to expand his business. Even though they love to hate each other, when a series of events pushes them together, neither knows quite what to do.
I recommend Wishing for the Rancher’s Love to readers who enjoy a Western romance full of action and sizzle. Reading the first four books in the series is not required to enjoy Clementine and Grady’s story, but it does provide additional information about the setting and Clementine’s family. I eagerly await the next book by Jody Hedlund! Thank you to BookFunnel, the author, and the publisher for my review copy. All opinions and thoughts are my own.

Clementine Oakley is left behind when all of her siblings fall in love. She makes plans to open her own store for her candy making business but is someone stalking her? Grady Worth and Clementine never seem to get along but, if Clementine is in danger, he wants to protect her. You'll be amazed at who the stalker really is! I enjoy all of Jody Hedlund's books. Clementine Oakley loves making candy. She doesn't love Grant Worth. He gets on her nerves.

But after Clementine feels threatened, Grant comes to her rescue time and time again. Maybe he isn't so bad after all.

This story is Book 5 of the High Country Ranch Series. It has been a great series. I have read every one and I'm sad that this is the last one. They are entertaining and so easy to read.

Grady & Clementine were my favorites of the series, by far. I loved their bickering and witty banter in several of the past books, and I could see they were headed toward their own happy ending. I also enjoyed both of them acknowledging past hurts from their own families and how those affected their lives.

These books definitely started out slow for me, but I would advise to stick with it, as the series does get better and I'm happy I took the time to read it.

I'm a sucker for Jody's western stories and this one kept up with the others. A wonderful finish for the Oakley Family.

Do you love a friends to lovers story, a bargain between father and son, a stalker, and a man who makes his sweethearts dreams come true? This is the book for you.
No spice but wonderful kisses that left me smiling.

I don't have any cons for the book.

I’m not really liking the MMC Grady. He’s pretty bossy, kind of blamed the FMC for having a stalker, tossed her over his shoulder (because he didn’t like her kissing her date), and then kissed her without permission. He and Clementine also went to a dance with different people, but end of kissing each other (which their dates witness 😬).
